The Legend Lives On - Official Cirque du Soleil 'Immortal World Tour' Discussion

Why do we even bother about "reviews" like this? I mean anyone who says he is a big fan of MJ but calls Wanna be starting something and Working day and night songs no one has ever heard of, is obviously a joke. Wanna be starting something is one of MJ's most popular and most recognized and most critically acclaimed songs. So anyone who says he's a big fan but never heard of it is definitely lying about being a fan. Only he/she knows why he/she felt the need to lie but what else is he/she lying about then? Does she also lie about how packed the arena was?

Anyway, as I see it this is a gossip website. The media and especially gossip websites have never been fans of MJ.

And do you think he got the irony of it all... "Wanna be Startin' Somethin'" is the FIRST song on Thriller....According to him, MJ's last great album.

That's why I won't bother commenting or or visiting his site.

I finally got to see the show this past Friday and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Despite all of the good reviews I read prior to the show, I must admit that I was a little worried because I was going with friends that aren't huge MJ fans like me. My worries stemmed from the fact that my friends are not nearly as familiar with music catalog or the other special little things that make Michael...Michael. I was scared that the entire concept would go completely over their heads and they would question why I brought them to some sort of MJ love propaganda fest to torture them.

Once the show started, I didn't worry about what my friends would think and just enjoyed myself. The show was fantastic and some of my favorite standout moments were the sizzle reel at the beginning, "I Just Can't Stop Loving You", "Human Nature", and the "Is it Scary/Threatened/Thriller" numbers. I was very happy to see how tastefully done everything was, they really captured his essence in the show.

After the show was over, I put my poker face back on as we left the events center and headed back up to our hotel room. With the help of having a large crowd to navigate through I was able to avoid the dreadful question of what they thought (they are very tough cookies to impress). I didn't really want their opinions to dampen the amazing 2 hours I just had.

Once we got back to the room, they were actually the ones that started talking about how amazing the show was and much to my surprise/relief they thanked me for bringing them to see the show! I couldn't believe what I was hearing! One of them actually said that she really likes Michael's message about unity and the show really made her miss him because she kept thinking what sort of twists Michael would have added to the show. If anyone knew how hard I have tried to unbrainwash the media lies stuck in their heads in the roughly 8 years that I have known these friends, they would know what a HUGE deal it is for them to enjoy the show and say those nice things about Michael.

A few days after the show I started replaying it in my head and noticed some of the songs that they did not include/feature prominently enough (because the songs are my personal favorites lol). I took some mental notes on what I'd like to see in the permanent show and they are:

-Dirty Diana, another pole dance number couldn't hurt, that lady in the Dangerous number was fantastic!
-The Way You Make Me Feel- I do not want to see any other guy besides Michael chasing a girl around stage but if they can find another twist, maybe another exquisite arial act that would be fantastic
-More Speechless, not just the accapella part as an intro, give it its own time to shine :)
-Just Good Friends, I just love that song
-Don't Walk Away, again I just love that song...it could really be a beautiful arial act
-History, it can be quite inspirational if done right
-More beatboxing, I could listen to him beatbox all day so there can never be enough of that for me lol

That is great! I understand your concern about how your friends would feel. I have friends like that too. I hope in time more people will come around in general. People didn't appreciate Michael when he was here and maybe this is a small step and getting non or casual fans to be more positive about Michael.

From Lipstick Alley:
I was in Vegas this past weekend, after partying hard from when we arrived on Thursday, I was ready to wind down. However, my hubby and cousin had other plans, I groaned. LOL!
Hubby said get dressed on Sunday (which is my actual birthday), and lets go out for dinner and show, I was bummed because we tried to get tickets and they were crazy $$$$.
So, we got dressed went for my birthday dinner (yet another one lol), and then we took a cab to Mandalay Hotel, we got out and my husband said "Happy Birthday baby, here are tickets to the MJ show!" I think I stopped breathing for a good minute, he was like "hon?"
I jumped on him, nearly knocking over a 6'5 man!! My cousin pulled some strings to get us some great seats!!! We were close to everything, we saw everything!! I cried pretty much throughout the show,I danced,& sang along. However,it was bittersweet, I was happy:party: and sad :weep:at the same time. One of my favorite parts (I have many), was the dancers with the LED costumes, the cherography was top notch and they gave their all.
i will never, ever forget that night! THE.BEST.BIRTHDAY.EVER. PERIOD!
I have been a fan ALL of my life, I went through the many phases of MJ, my Jherri curl, I made my own glove, red jacket etc...
This show was well put thought out and put together, I'm so proud to say that I was there.:love::love::love::love:

Here is your answer below.

I expect them to announce new North American stops soon.

Celebrities and fans alike are turning out in force for Cirque du Soleil’s “Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour,” and now for the second consecutive week since opening at Mandalay Bay Events Center, it’s at the top of the charts. Since its tour began in Montreal in October, it has accumulated nearly $100 million in ticket sales.
Pollstar reports that “Immortal” has become the highest-grossing live show in the country, and the figures are staggering, with nearly $2 million in tickets sold for each night of its run here through Dec. 27.
Pollstar says that’s an incredible $500,000-plus more than Taylor Swift, who is the next highest-earning touring show, and she plays larger arenas in different cities nightly, whereas “Immortal” is fixed here at 8,500 seats for two more weeks.

As Vegas DeLuxe reported Sunday, hip-hop mogul Jay-Z and his radiantly expectant wife Beyonce were at “Immortal” with superstar musician Cee-Lo Green close by, as was “Modern Family” 21st birthday girl Sarah Hyland.

Now I’m learning the plans for Cirque’s new residency Michael Jackson show at Mandalay Bay:
*Opening date is set: Cirque founder and billionaire Guy Laliberte, here last week for his first look at the show in Las Vegas, and Mandalay Bay President Chuck Bowling have set May 13, 2013, as the opening date for the permanent show.

*Plans are underway: Cirque President Daniel Lamarre has confirmed to me that planning for the residency show is underway, and it began the day after “Immortal” opened at Mandalay Bay. When Disney’s “The Lion King” departs Dec. 30, Cirque construction crews will begin dismantling the venue to prepare for the one-year makeover starting Jan. 2.

*Jamie King signs on: It’s now confirmed that touring show author, chief choreographer and Director Jamie King has been signed to a new contract to mastermind the residency production. Extraordinary costume director Zaldy Goco, who designed the “Immortal” wardrobe, also will repeat his genius for the new show. Our five-part interview series about “Immortal” included my interviews with Jamie and Zaldy.

*Michael Jackson museum: Michael Jackson Estate executor attorney John Branca has told me that a museum honoring the King of Pop will be part of the residency show’s attractions with some of the Neverland memorabilia from the Michael Jackson Fan Fest on display. Reliable sources indicate that the Neverland gates and giving tree will be an entranceway to the new theater.

*Michael Jackson nightlife: An interactive arcade with Michael Jackson games will be featured. Plans for a nightclub attraction haven’t yet been finalized and might not, but Cirque has partnered with the Light Group to take over the currently shuttered Rum Jungle at Mandalay Bay to open with a new entertainment concept in fall 2012. Light Group, now a part of Morgans Hotel Group, opens the nightclub 1OAK at the Mirage with Fergie on New Year’s Eve.
Jamie flew here four days before the touring show opened to make changes to the production that I first saw at its world premiere in Montreal.

“Ideas have changed, developed and grown. When it’s a touring show, things change because of the nature of the venues, but when you mount a show in one place, it has to be venue specific. I certainly had to adapt to the Mandalay Bay site. So there have been different ideas, certainly. It’s the same show, but certain aspects are now given more prominence. We don’t do anything without Guy’s stamp of approval, and he finally gave us that when the show reached Vancouver.”
I talked with Jamie about him signing on the dotted line for the new show before it became official. “I would love the opportunity to do that show. We would need to start on it immediately. Tomorrow! It’s going to be at the Mandalay Bay Theater, so we have to trick out the room and the way to get to the theater. I look forward to the challenge 100 percent.
“It would be a 100 percent different show -- you would know that -- but I would say there would be certain elements from this touring show that would be incorporated -- our favorite moments from this show would definitely be in there. There are some beautiful moments, and I’d like to carry them over. It would be far more theatrical like a Cirque show than a rock arena show.”
The Michael Jackson Fan Fest that ends Wednesday has been a major success with its 200 items of Neverland memorabilia on display. Some of the pieces in the multimillion-dollar exhibit will be used in the residency show and museum. The collection after Wednesday won’t be seen again until possibly Michael’s next Aug. 29 birthday remembrance and then May 2013 when the new production opens.

Fan Fest includes some of designer Zaldy’s unfinished works that Michael was rehearsing in for the This Is It concert run in London’s 02 Arena that was canceled when he died two days before flying there. Ten of the outfits were Zaldy’s for the 50 U.K. performances. This was the first time that the Estate executors approved a showing of Michael’s collections, and since arriving here, the items have been under day-and-night surveillance.

“It gives fans the opportunity to see things that were very important and very personal to Michael that had never been seen before. We wanted to choose items that the fans wanted to see and we knew that Michael would want to share with them,” a Fan Fest executive said.

“There are items in here that I’d never seen before or even knew Michael had,” his brother Jackie Jackson told me. “But I know Michael would have wanted to share them with his fans.
“We, as a family, are proud and happy that ‘Immortal’ is successful, and the fans love it. It takes Michael’s message to an even wider audience around the world, and we know the next residency show in Vegas will be an even bigger success keeping his legacy alive and teaching that peace and love are the most important of all.”

After the Las Vegas run ends Dec. 27, “Immortal” opens in Phoenix on Dec. 30. It then criss-crosses the nation from Boise to Boston and Los Angeles to Long Island, plus three return engagements in Canada through an Aug. 21 date in Salt Lake City. New dates and international venues are still being scheduled, and Cirque estimates that its debut touring juggernaut show will run five years in North America and the rest of the world, with bookings already set for Europe and Asia.

Wow, so great news! So they will extend the show's running in the USA from 3 to 5 years? So much about those negative "reviews" about it flopping and so on! Wishful thinking on the part of some journalists, I guess.

And I think if it's a success in the US (where Michael hasn't been treated well for the last 20 years) it's gonna be an even bigger success globally.

Who said it was flopping? That's my first time ever reading that?

USA AND rest of the world

All the noise about the cancelling of some shows and then some websites made comments about perhaps it's not doing as well as expected etc. And yesterday that article from that gossip website as well. Perhaps they don't use the word "flop" but they certainly want to make that impression when they make such remarks as in that article yesterday.

I thought that the tour was coming to the UK in late 2012, but there's nothing online to suggest this anymore. Does anyone know anything? I may be in the USA at easter, so was considering buying a ticket for a show there but would rather save the money and wait.

The article says it will run in the usa and the rest of the world for five years. some dates in germany and i think finland have been posted for late 2012

Yeah I am sure London dates will be announced soon. I suspect they will do it at the O2 arena. Is there any other arena in London?

Yeah theres a couple of others or so. ill pass if its at the 02 either see it at another uk venue if they do any or maybe go to europe

Billboard have done a chart for the top concert tours for 2011, (nov 10 - nov 11). I don't know the number of shows in the immortal schedule but it looks like they'll make the top 5 for next year on doing one a week. The gross profits are amazing per show - it's only bettered by big bands like u2 playing sell-out massive stadiums.

http://blogs.montrealgazette.com/20...immortal-world-tour-has-raked-in-100-million/

According to Forbes Magazine, the Cirque du Soleil’s Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour, which cost about $60 million to make, has already raked in about $100 million. And that’s just since it opened in Montreal last October 3. It’s now playing to packed houses in Las Vegas, and has tour dates stretching on to forever. Plus, there’s a permanent version of the show in the works, slated to opend at the Mandalay Bay resort in Las Vegas in May, 2013.

Some of us were hoping that the permanent show would feature a new creative team which might come up with a more cohesive approach. But apparently the Cirque du Soleil has rehired choreographer Jamie King, who did the touring show, and costume designer Zaldy Goco. Or at least that’s what the Las Vegas Sun is reporting.

After all, who wants to mess with success? Pollstar, which crunches the money numbers on the concert circuit, is listing the MJ Immortal show as the top-earning show in North America, beating out Taylor Swift by a comfortable margin.

Also being reported in Vegas, pop megastars Jay-Z and Beyonce took in a performance of MJ The Immortal at Mandalay Bay.

The show is expected back at the Bell Centre in Montreal on March 20-22, 2012.

My immortal adventure with Cirque du Soleil

In early October, Cirque du Soleil invited a group of journalists to attend the world premiere of its new production. Perhaps you've heard of the subject of this grand, new circus spectacle: Michael Jackson.

Michael Jackson The Immortal is touring across North America before taking up permanent residence in Las Vegas in 2012. The show comes to Saskatoon on Saturday.
The StarPhoenix's Stephanie McKay was among the attendees, a red carpet glimpse at the Jackson family, a performance of the show and a behind-the-scenes look at the Cirque world. The show behind the show, and how well Cirque choreographs its message to the media, is equally as fascinating as what's happening on the intricate stage.
Following is a play-by-play glimpse into McKay's Montreal adventure.
SUNDAY
6: 5 p.m. The Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour premieres tonight at the Bell Centre, home of the Montreal Canadiens. Montreal is bone-chillingly cold and rainy, so much so that crew members are shop-vaccing the red carpet. More like the wet carpet. Fans and media types cue up to catch a glimpse of potential celebrities.
6:32 p.m. A silver, sparkly glove is spotted on a fan's hand.
6:42 p.m. The red carpet is moved inside and the need for gloves, at least for warmth, decreases. Hordes of cameras jostle for a prime spot. A Cirque publicist confirms that Michael's mother Katherine Jackson and other members of the Jackson family are attending.
6:48 p.m. A velvet rope appears. Does that mean Janet is coming?
6:50 p.m. First to stroll the red carpet are two wild-haired dancers, Larry and Laurent Bourgeois or Les Twins, who are already donning their stage makeup and black and gold leather costumes. The MJ inspiration is everywhere, from their sharply defined features to their bullet-laden jackets.
The French performers are followed by Greg Phillinganes, the show's musical director who sings, "It's Cirque time, time for the circus." It's unclear whether he's talking about the show or the red carpet madness.
7:28 p.m. Canadian singer Rufus Wainwright walks the red carpet, looking fairly uncomfortable. A couple of performers in their Chicagostyle flapper dresses look entirely at home amid the flashbulbs.
8:02 p.m. It's two minutes past show time and still no sign of the Jacksons.
8:08 p.m. The family, including Michael's three children Prince, Paris and Prince II and brothers Tito, Jackie and Marlon walk the red carpet, posing in a long line before countless flashes. A crowd of ticket holders amass nearby, craning for a peek. It is clear now, just how odd it might feel to be a Jackson.
8:25 p.m. With just enough time to scarf down a piece of pizza it's time to take a seat. The arena is positively brimming with people. A massive metal tree is rooted to the centre of the stage. As the lights go down, a cheer swells. Expectations are clearly high for this production as it attempts to blend some of the best-known pop songs of all time with the awe-inspiring feats of Cirque performers.
The show begins in very Cirque fashion, with a troupe of clowns. The goofy group is on its way to Neverland
The clowns, including the Bourgeois twins, are here for more than comic relief though. Turns out they are also incredible dancers with moves that MJ would approve of.
8:32 p.m. Just a few minutes in, the show has already proven to be big, loud and ridiculous. Jackson's influence is in absolutely every bit of the show, from giant video montages to the costumes. The red zipper jacket is, of course, represented.
8:35 p.m. The energy slows down a bit for the Have You Seen My Childhood segment. A video shows a grown man running around in footy pyjamas. It is strange and a little creepy. All of a sudden an animatronic six-year-old Michael floats into the audience in a helium balloon. The resemblance is spot-on.
8:52 p.m. Journalists in the audience are promptly told to stop taking notes by security. Everyone is confused, but complies. The rest of the show goes by in a Blurof multicoloured mohawks, tree climbing, drums, Bubbles, gold knee pads, a dancing machine, bats, gangsters, twirling, tumbling and toilet paper ghouls.
10:30 p.m. The show ends with a traditional pyro display and the crowd gets to its feet. Most people head back to their homes, but a select few thousand head to an after party elsewhere in the Bell Centre.
A twinkly tree in the centre of the room mimics the central tree in the production. Dozens of people prepare food, from sushi to canapes on spinning plates to dry ice merengues that smoke when you eat them. Drinks are in plentiful supply.
12:13 p.m. The dancers begin their second performance of the night as a gawking crowd assembles in a large circle around them. Their unchoreographed moves rival those in the show.
MONDAY
8:57 a.m. The journalists are corralled once again, this time to take a backstage tour at Cirque Studios, about half an hour's drive outside downtown. Among the assembled is Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous' Robin Leach who asked the Saskatoon writer if she could be any taller. She could not.
9:19 a.m. The bus ride begins with the group discussing their thoughts on last night's show. One says he thought the show was "distant at times." Others remark at the memorable moments, like the larger-than-life penny loafers.
9:50 p.m. The bus arrives at the studio, an outwardly nondescript building in the warehouse district. Inside there is a flurry of activity. The tour guide, Marie Caron, said it's where athletes become artists since come from a sports background - including synchronized swimming, gymnastics and extreme sports. In a single year up to 600 people can go through the training program.
10:14 a.m. The tour moves on to the makeup room, where aerial artist May is learning how to apply her makeup. Each performer must master their own makeup look because it would be impossible to hire enough makeup artists. The most complicated makeup look has 65 steps.
10: 20 a.m. The journalists pass by a massive room, where an entire Cirque stage can be assembled. It is becoming more and more clear just how huge the Cirque machine has become since forming as a small circus company in 1984. The studio itself built an addition in 2000 to double its size. Cirque du Soleil employs 5,000 people around the world, more than 1,000 of them artists.
11: 02 a.m. The tour visits the hat and wig department. Every single performer has their own head mold, created so the elaborate head pieces fit just right. Workers painstakingly create wigs by adding a single strand of hair at a time. The process can take up to 175 hours. Each department (there are also show, costume and textile department) is constantly working to outfit 22 different shows.
12:25 p.m. The tours returns to Bell Centre. Ravenous writers demolish a plate of tuna fish sandwiches and desserts.
1:18 p.m. The journalists are split into groups for a series of interviews. First up are musical designer Kevin Antunes and musical director Phillinganes. Phillinganes actually worked with Jackson as did many members of his band. He chats about Jackson's legacy, his interaction with Katherine Jackson before and after the show and how, he believes, Jackson would have loved the show.
1: 38 p.m. The show's costume designer Zaldy Goco is surrounded by his creations, from bronzed statue suits to big bat wings. Dressed like a hip Freddy Kreuger, Goco discusses a few of his favourite costumes, most notably the Chicagoera gangster costumes with pyrotechnic hands. "The gun gloves are amazing, I want a gun glove." Goco, who was working with Jackson on his final tour This is It, said it was a difficult choice to return to the MJ world so soon, but was proud to bring little pieces of the musician into this new production. Though it was a challenge to incorporate things like harnesses into the costumes ("not cute"), he said it "magically worked, circus style."
2:18 p.m. The tour takes the group to a group of performers and choreographers, including the humble and almost astonished Salah Benlemqawanssa, the principal dancer who is a bit Marcel Marceau and a lot pop-and-locker. He admits he almost cried five times during the premiere performance. The choreographers, Travis Payne and Rich and Tone Talauega, admit to being hungover from the after party. Both sentiments are entirely genuine. Rich adds that it was intimidating as a dancer to work with acrobats. "But what we all share is movement and a love of Michael."
3:01 p.m. With feet every so gracefully crossed like a dancer, Michael Jackson The Immortal creator Jamie King is the last stop on the whirlwind tour. A rock concert director for artists like Madonna, the Cirque show was a departure for King. But, since the director actually got his start as a dancer for Jackson, his involvement made perfect sense.
"He was my biggest influence. He showed me how to put on a show."

** Yes, I kind of agree with the bold part. I just hope they would choose a different director so you can see a different approach.
But people like to play it safe I guess!

So I really have no idea what he means by dark days but I found this on twitter

Since Cirque hasn't bothered to announce it or even to find suitable replacements...I'm writing this review so everyone will know that the dancing duo Les Twins has been cut from the show with no explanation.
This happened on 12/9 (two days before I flew out to Vegas for the performance). I'm a lifelong MJ fan, but if I had known sooner I would've cancelled my trip because after seeing Les Twins perform to MJ's music I could no longer imagine the show without them. There were some good moments, but the overall quality and thrill of the show was definitely less without the star dancers. Huge portions of the performance where Les Twins would've been dancing were just left out altogether. And to any dedicated fans who've been following and anticipating this show since it opened, the holes are very noticeable.
I love MJ so much. I planned my trip 18 months in advance and counted down the days. But now I can't in good faith recommend this show to anyone because I know that not only did I not get my money's worth with the entire show as advertised, but most importantly, Michael Jackson is no longer receiving the tribute he deserves without the best dancers Les Twins being a part of the production
.

Favorite moment: The ballet and tap dancers & the clarity of MJ's real voice singing

What? Les Twins got cut? (Les Twins are the 2 tall brothers with big afros who dances in the show ex: Beat It, 2 of the 'fanatics')

Didn't expect that, they were many people's favorite dancers on the show. Maybe it's a personnal or behaviour matter, who knows...

Can't wait to see who'll replace them :)

@Robin_Leach: Now Brad Pitt Agelina Jolie & all the kids check into Four Seasons Hotel at Mandalay Bay for tonight's Cirque Michael Jackson Immortal show

Cool... I am sure their kids are big MJ fans. All children love MJ...

ETA. Yep...the twins are gone. I have known this for over a week now (the night before Beyonce & Jay-Z went to see the show). I've been told they were let go, but we don't know why.

WTF? The twins were not the "stars" of the show. Neither is Gianinni. SMDH. this "fan" is off the wall (not MJ off the wall). 99% of people ho go see the show don't even know these dancers.

Michael is the star of the show.
