i think the answer is clear~
The songs he writes on his own 100%
since that we can listen what he want to say from his heart,
and it will be more touching and emotions...

RIP Michael

The songs he wrote on his own... I can't believe I used the past tense...

All songs in categories are great. Michael could sing anything.

The ones he wrote himself are just so much more.

i wish it was multiple choice, because he always had the final say in what he would be a part of. i would have chosen all three choices. and, nothing he was involved with, to me, lacked the magic. 'man in the mirror', comes to mind.

Paintings and music are different things. Lots of music are collaborations. Elton John always writes the music, and Bernie Taupin does the lyrics. A lot of Stevie Wonder's early 70s songs were written with Syreeta Wright. There's partners like Goffin & King, Bell & Creed, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Lennon & McCartney, Holland Dozier Holland, Jam & Lewis, Isley's & Jasper, etc.

Wonderfully put. If the artist successfully conveys the emotions of the song then it doesn't matter who wrote it. I mean it matters in terms of the credit but it has no impact if the lyrics came from another person.... if that makes sense? :*****:

As long as he is involved in them, I really don't care, but more than likely, I will prefer his own songs over those of others. I can tell which ones he wrote, immediately, even though I may not know it, initially. Otoh, I know what songs he didn't pen and I can tell immed. as they end up being some of my least favorite songs.

His greatest material is undoubtedly that which he writes himself. There is no greater brilliance than that of a thoroughly original creation. His original songs are by far the ones which exhibit the greatest quality, emotion, and timelessness. It all comes with being a multi-talented genius. :)

This is interesting because just a couple of days ago I was running a poll on a fan website in my country about what are MJ fan's favourite songs. Man in the Mirror won, but overall songs those were written by Michael, and him alone, dominated the chart. I think about 7 of the top 10 songs were written by him alone. I made different stats from the results and one of those stats was exactly this: songs written by him alone, songs written by him but in collaboration, songs written by others. The songs written by him alone got about 1200 ponts, the songs written in collaboration about 550 or so, and the songs written by others about 500.

When I called the fans to participate in this poll I didn't tell them I was gonna make this statistics, so they weren't influenced by wanting MJ's songs to win or something.

I also realized that most songs on Invincible are written by as many as 5-6 people and IMO that is the reason why that album is a bit weaker than other MJ albums (well, I know it's a controversial subject, but IMO it's weaker and I think this is one of the reasons: too many people working on the songs and because of that they kind of lost that "MJ touch").

I think it was the utter conviction for which he sang that song. He really made that one come alive. Though, personally, my favorite track that wasn't penned by him was and will probably always be Human Nature.

Human Nature was the other non-Michael written song in the top 10 of my poll.

Well, I voted for the songs he wrote on his own, but I absolutely love and adore all the Rod Temperton songs written for him. And I always wished he had recorded "Always and Forever" by Heatwave.

And Stevie's "I Can't Help It", "Human Nature" and "Man in the Mirror" are all 3 in my favorite ten songs of all time.

Overall i would say i enjoy the song's written by Michael, but my favorite song of all time is 'Man In The Mirror'!

Invincible has the answer to this in my opinion. Speechless proved his songwriting alone was miles above anything else on that album. So simple and beautiful. No futuristic sounds, no over production. Just a gorgeous melody with lovely lyrics.

The six songs Temperton wrote were not catalog songs he just dugged up and dusted off, understand, he wrote those song SPECIFICALLY for Mike. "Thriller" was written with "This Place Hotel" in mind. http://www.geniusmichaeljackson.com/en/albums/songs/Thriller/Thriller.html

"Off The Wall" was written with Mike's percussive vocals in mind.

Usually the best songs (in my opinion) on any MJ album are the ones he's written or co-written, with a few notable exceptions!

Off The Wall: Favourite songs are DSTYGE, Working Day and Night & Rock With You - MJ wrote the first two.
Thriller: Favourite's are Billie Jean, Beat It, Wanna Be Startin Something and Human Nature - MJ wrote all but HN
Bad: Favourite's are Smooth Criminal, Dirty Diana, Liberian Girl and Man In The Mirror - MJ wrote all except MITM
Dangerous: Favourite's are Give In To Me, Who Is It, WYBT and Remember The Time - wrote all, although co-wrote RTT
History: Favourite's are Stranger In Moscow and TDCAU - he wrote both
Invincible - Favourite's are Whatever Happens, Butterflies, Break of Dawn, Don't Walk Away - co-wrote all except Butterflies

The notable exceptions of songs that I love that he didn't write are Rock With You, Human Nature and Man In The Mirror - they are all MJ classics. However, I think MJ is at his best and most interesting (Billie Jean, Dirty Diana etc) when he writes the songs. There is far greater depth, creativity and complexity to the songs he wrote himself.

I agree. Which is why I wish he had written more songs himself for Invincible.

You are exactly right. Both Michael and Rod have talked about this- Which is why I think they're some of Michael's very best work along with MITM, HN, and I can't Help it.

I always like if an artist writes at least a part of their songs because to me creativity is a part of the whole package and I also like to see what's on an artist's mind musically, lyrically. I think there's a great deal you can learn from Michael's self-written songs about him as a person and as a musician as well.

I don't know about all that. If I listen to KC & The Sunshine Band, I just know he wants to party and have fun. If I listen to Right Said Fred, I know they're too sexy.

Oh, OK, not everybody. But there are many artists whose lyrics reflect something about their own personality. Not necessarily an own experience, but the topics that occupy their minds still show something about their personalities.
