Prince Appreciation Thread - For Fans

Re: Prince...........

Love Prince, though I'm not a major fan, my mum is a huuuuuge fan though. I saw him a few years ago in London (was about 6 years ago I think?) with my mum, she's part of the fanclub and there was a mix up with tickets/people arguing over seats etc...Prince came out to see what the problem was! My expression was like this  I couldn't believe it, there was about 20 of us there with Prince! He seemed nice, though I was too over-awed to speak to him. He's incredibly beautiful and petite. With flawless skin. We were sat in the second row, I was literally a few feet away from his guitars, I could have reached out and touched them if it wasn't for the scary security guy watching over them!! It was a good concert though, the man is incredibly talented :)

My favourite Prince song is Sometimes It Snow's from Under The Cherry Moon, beautiful song :)

If it's true it would be awesome. I've heard that Prince has covered MJ's songs in concert. I would like to see it for myself.

Re: Prince...........

I am a huge Prince fan!

I don't really understand all the constant comparison between Prince and Michael. Maybe they are somewhat similar but not...really. Musically they are very different, lyrically, performing, instrumentation... I know they were pegged as "enemies" or something back in the day but they're really not that alike aside from being totally committed to their art.

The only reason people compare is because they're both black and were the hottest black male crossover artists of the 80s. I love both. Prince has a lot of great songs.

That's not the only reason. Back in the 80s they were both considered to be feminine and androgynous. Lionel Richie was very popular then and he never got lumped in with them as Lionel had a more masculine image. Although not as popular, Terrence Trent D'arby did get compared to Mike & Prince as he had the androgynous look. TTD also had the James Brown influence like them.

Re: Prince...........

I so love Prince too! He's my #2 after Michael!
I love the Emancipation album.
One of my favorite song to hear is actually Kiss, this puts me in a so good mood LOL!
I LOOOVE 'THE ONE', 'CALL MY NAME' and all the sexy baby making songs he made, he's so good at this!

I first got into Prince when 'The most beautiful girl in the world' video aired on TV, I just couldn't take my eyes off the screen!

This man get more beautiful as time passes by.

Yes it pisses me off the way we cannot find videos or even much pictures of him on the net! damn, who this man thinks he is!?

Actually, I think for me Michael and Prince are like ''mini weats'.. Michael is the plain side, Prince is the sugared side! LOL

Re: Prince...........

The $3000 was also to meet Michael and have your photo taken with him, even though it was a lot of money when many fans meet Michael for free. I think that is worth more than a book and movie that will properbly be released in one form or another at a cheaper price in the future.

Still doesn't make it right, that is when I started believing the debt rumours.

Re: Prince...........

I love the Purple One too :) My goal in life at five was to be apart of the Revolution playing the maracas or tambourine while married to Michael!

In no particular order:
1. Raspberry Beret
2. Mountains
3. Lion of Judah
4. Diamonds and Pearls
5. Money Don't Matter 2 Nite
6. She Gave Her Angels
7. Strange Relationship
8. The Cross
9. U Got the Look
10. Reflection

Yes that's a beautiful song. I love that entire album.

Re: Prince...........

prince was very inspired by MJ musically and image wise as well. they had alot in common with there talents to merge R&B,Pop,Gospel and Rock as a hybrid sound as one. they are both diverse genius artists who both were inspired by James Brown,Sly Stone,Hendrix amongest others.

Re: Prince...........

Eh, I don't really think Prince was all that influenced by MJ. I'd say he was more influenced by artists like James Brown, Stevie Wonder and also interested in doing his own thing. He was LIKE Mike in that he took artists he loved and folded their influences into a style of his own, but Prince was starting out before MJ even had his first album out as an adult solo star.

Re: Prince...........

I love Prince!!!

Mike and Prince has alot in common attitude wise and the grovy beats that makes you wanna dance. none of them do much press work.

I must say, I see Mike as much more mainstreem music wise, and more focussed on being a hit, staying number one. Prince spits out album after album which I personally think is the reason for his decline.

Mike sings about love, and healing the world. Prince sings about love, partying, politics and how people use eachother for personal gain.

Even though the two might seem alike, I find the two very different. two very very different charactors, that might have admired eachothers work, but I don't think they would get along that well - only maybe while talking about music and their passion for it.
I think Mike would find Prince offensive and Prince would find michael boring and weak. but they shared the same influences, the love for their work, and the love for the same kind of agressiveness in music.

The world is theirs!

Re: Prince...........

They're different artists with lots of parallels, and there's stuff Mike did that I'd love to have seen Prince do, and there's stuff Prince did that I'd love to have seen Mike do.

Yes, Michael was always my #1 growing up because he was the very first true artist I was ever introduced to in the 80s, and it was love at first sight, LOL. Then Prince and Madonna came shortly after.

I was extremely fascinated with Prince when I was a little kid, but I 'knew' most of his songs and videos were very naughty and sexual, and I wasn't really sure what to think about that... so I just kinda steered clear of him until I was older and started to understand his songs/messages.

Prince doesn't like his videos or songs posted on the internet because he says that the internet is "draining his bank account." I don't really blame him, dude is f***ing smart. ;)

Also, I love your mini-wheats analogy. That is too effin' cute.

I don't agree with this view. I doubt Prince found Michael boring and weak, neither do I think Michael would find Prince offensive. They both had a lot of respect for each other. I guess both of them were in awe of each other genius, even have a different view of how to reach their audience.

Michael was focused on using his genius to innovate in the commerical world of music which very few artists have ever acheived, and needed to be commerical because success to Michael wasn't just the quality of his music but being No.1 in the world. Prince was never as interested in being No.1 in the world, and doesn't just judge his success by No.1 singles and albums. Right after Purple Rain, Prince released Around The World In A Day which was very uncommerical despite reaching No.1 in the USA. His most acclaimed album Sign 'O' The Times only reached No.6 in the USA. And he's an artist who is able to drop in and out of the mainstream, which Michael wasn't allowed to do by fans and the media. Prince started off as a cult artist and that's the difference between him and Michael.

Some critics say Thriller ended Michael's career as someone who would have made experimental music and dropped in and out of the mainstream like Prince does. But Michael was the right man for the job to innovate and change commercial music, Elvis did it (though he didn't write his own songs and many were cover versions), The Beatles did it and Michael did it bigger than anyone.

there's stuff Mike did that I'd love to have seen Prince do, and there's stuff Prince did that I'd love to have seen Mike do.

I'd would have liked to see that to. Maybe Prince might do something Michael did one day ?

Re: Prince...........

I posted these already in 'The What Are You Listening To Thread' ... but I'll repost them again in here for the fans. :D

Anything by Prince from the 1980's has my attention!!

I disagree. I think they always had a mutual respect for each other. Prince used to receive packages from MJ containing James Brown/Sly and the Family Stone footage. Also, in the "Rolling Stone" MJ article that came out in July, it shows how much respect MJ had for Prince. I don't have the article in front of me but basically it went like this.

"For the most part, nights seemed to be the biggest problem for Jackson- he had complained of insomnia for years. But it was also the time when he felt a higher power was channeling creativity to him. "I didn't get a whole lot of sleep last night," he would tell Ortega. "I was up working on music. That's when the information is coming, and when it's coming you gotta work."

"Michael," Ortega joked with him, "why can't you make a pact with your higher power so that you could put these ideas on the shelf until after July 13th?"

"No," Jackson responded. "Then he might give them to Prince."

haha funny story

Re: Prince...........

I watched 'Under The Cherry Moon' earlier today. I hadn't seen it in awhile, but I still remembered all of the dialogue. "Wreka Stow", lol.

Re: Prince...........

I don't care what anyone says, "Under The Cherry Moon" is a thoroughly entertaining movie! lol. It's obvious Prince was just trying to have some fun and that the movie wasn't meant to be taken seriously. I actually prefer "Under The Cherry Moon" over "Purple Rain".

I like 'Cherry Moon' better than the other movies too. I had a double dose of Jerome Benton, because I saw Janet's "Control" video today also, lol.

Thanks 4 these...Goes to listen=)

Re: Prince...........

i doubt i'll be popular for saying this, but for me, prince comes out number one!

the thing is though, prince and michael are completely different. prince sings songs about sex, religion, politics etc whereas michael sings songs about healing the world and traumas in his own life.

not only that, but i find that prince makes REAL music, by this i don't mean that michael's music is crap! i mean that he uses real instruments on his songs in the studio and on stage whereas michael uses a lot of computer generated sounds (from what i gather) in his stuff.

the thing i say to everyone is...Michael Jackson is an amazingly fantastic artist, whereas Prince is an amazingly fantastic musician.

Both are so very talented in each their own unique and individual ways and i think despite what they might have said in the past, i think secretly they both respected each other and held each other as rivals.

Michael was/is so much more mainstream than Prince...Mr Nelson is a very acquired taste and i don't think he gets the credit he's due. yeah he's weird and is very arrogant and has...well is just generally strange, but all music's greats have been percieved as strange in some way!

But generally, i think it's unfair to compare the two, as you can't pick out a Prince song and say it sounds like a Michael song or visa versa.

They're both amazing and I love them both,
Just my opinion :)
Please don't shoot me down or bitch at me for anything i might've said! :)

I agree with you on most of what you said, even if for me Mike is #1 in my heart, Prince is almost equal.

Re: Prince...........

Prince is an all time great just like Michael. They are very different from one another, but all greats are sorta unique. I really don't understand why people always compare them and feel the need to choose sides. Prince sounds as different from MJ to me as, say, James Brown sounds different from Ray Charles.
