That's for sure.

How is trash TV entertaining? It’s like they want blood and conflict, that’s what sells, if they want blood and conflict, tune into WWE, UFC, heck even the NHL.

I think his name has been removed and put back, a couple of times and may not have even been on the award, last year....I'd have to check on that. This is no big deal, as far as I'm concerned. The media is just trying to conjure up news and controversy where there is none, as usual.

Upon checking, it was only named the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award in 1991. Prior to that, from 1984 - 1990, it was just the Vanguard Award. In 1994 and again in 2003, it was presented as a Lifetime Achievement Award, without the Michael Jackson name on it. The media publicised it only as the Video Vanguard Award last year, when Jennifer Lopez won it; however, MTV called it the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award on Youtube. I think it's a bit hit-and-miss and depends on what the general feeling is in the industry at the time.

This is now a completely different thing.

Although in the previous years (starting from 1991) that Video Vanguard Award did not always have Michael Jackson’s name on it, yet his name remained as the official name of that award.

Even the following year (won by Guns N' Roses in 1992) the award was named again as Video Vanguard Award, but Michael Jackson’s name was the award’s official name.

Also, when it was given as the Lifetime Achievement Award, Michael Jackson’s name was still the official name of that award.

Now, if MTV removes Michael Jackson’s name from that Video Vanguard Award, his name will no longer be officially associated with that award, meaning that the award will have no connection at all with his name.

This award will ALWAYS be connected to MJ regardless if his name is on the award or not.

Exactly. this is apart of Michael and MTV history. they can't erase this. if they do, it still wouldn't matter because it still apart of both history. they can try to remove it but it will always be both history. that's something you can not take away.

MTV is said to be thinking about removing the King of Pop’s name from the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award given out at the the VMAs. Would that be the right call?

The equivalent to a lifetime achievement honor, the first Vanguard Awards were handed out in 1984 at the inaugural MTV Video Music Awards, to David Bowie, The Beatles and A Hard Day’s Night director Richard Lester. In 1991, three years after Jackson himself was bestowed with the award, it was renamed the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

Most recently, in 2018, Jennifer Lopez became the first Latin artist to receive the award.

But now, six months after the documentary Leaving Neverland resurfaced allegations against Jackson — two men, Wade Robson and James Safechuck, claim they were sexually abused as children by the singer — “There’s a lot of heated discussion at the network about how to handle the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award … and it’s getting ugly,” a source tells Page Six. “There’s talk about if they should change the name, or get rid of it altogether…. It’s a mess.”

For this year’s VMAs, to be held Monday, Aug. 26, no recipient has been announced for award, which is not given out annually.

What do you think MTV should do with the Video Vanguard Award?

I think that's always been the case. The media acts like 2019 will be the end for MJ, but his music sales have increased this year.

Nah it's not as clear cut as you're trying to portray.

There are several years where MTV did not announce the award with Michael's name, display his name onscreen, or list his name on the award list. I cannot comment on the name being inscribed on the award itself.

I voted too, but it’s clear to me that MTV’s pretty much dead even to me, they don’t give a crap about music short films anymore and pretty much go for Jerry Springer TV like programs which is bleh and boring. Again. MTV is pretty much dead sux @$$ anyways.

Did MTV secretly drop Michael Jackson's name from the Video Vanguard Award?

Page Six first reported last month that MTV was considering dropping Jackson's name from the VMAs' Video Vanguard Award in wake of the Leaving Neverland sexual molestation controversy. But MTV, which renamed the award in his honor in 1991, called it the "Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award" on Aug. 12 in announcing that Missy Elliott would be this year's recipient. Yet Monday's VMAs ceremony omitted Michael Jackson's name in presenting the award, even though Elliott said in her acceptance speech: "The Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award means so much to me." MTV's YouTube video of Elliott's speech also omits Jackson's name. Yet MTV's website on Monday described Elliott as "the newest recipient of the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award." MTV has yet to comment on the VMAs omission.

Re: Did MTV secretly drop Michael Jackson's name from the Video Vanguard Award?

Its nothing but a propaganda for tabloid, and those who are behind that propaganda just want to know how people react.

MTV has not officially changed or renamed the award, its still the MJ VA

Seems like different people at MTV have different views on this. So it's on / off.

Should MTV Drop Michael Jackson’s Name From VMA Award? Wyclef, Naughty by Nature Weigh in
Elizabeth Wagmeister

The Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, which is arguably the VMAs’ highest honor, was shrouded with controversy this year, long before the show even happened. In the weeks leading up to Sunday night’s show, rumor had it that MTV would drop Jackson’s name from the honor, following the cloud cast over his legacy after HBO aired the docuseries, “Leaving Neverland,” which showcases two men reviving allegations of childhood sexual abuse against the singer (the Jackson estate is suing HBO over the film).

While Jackson’s name officially remained on the award — as confirmed by a press release announcing Missy Elliott as this year’s recipient — his name was rarely mentioned during the broadcast and in promos. However, Elliott did say during her acceptance speech, “The Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award means so much to me” and also thanked MJ’s sister, Janet Jackson.

But how did artists at the show feel about the issue? Variety caught up with two of them before the show, Wyclef Jean — who worked with Jackson briefly on a recording session in 1997 for a remix of a track, which never saw the light of day — and Naughty by Nature, and asked whether they felt the singer’s name should be removed from the Video Vanguard Award.

Jean said that it’s unfair to penalize the late singer unless allegations against him are proven. “At the end of the day, I feel unless someone is there to defend themselves, [unless] something is proven in the court, it’s just hard for me,” Jean said, walking the red carpet with his wife and daughter. “At the end of the day, I feel like if the person is not here to defend themselves, my opinion is going to be based on my family.”

Jean has previously spoken about Jackson’s inspiration on his career, calling him “my musical God.” After his death, Jean said, “He made me believe that all things are possible, and through real and positive music. He can live forever! I love Michael Jackson. God Bless him.”

Naughty by Nature, who joined fellow New Jersey natives Jean, Queen Latifah, Redman and Fetty Wap for a show-closing performance celebrating their home state and the site of the 2019 VMAs, had a stronger opinion, telling Variety that if MTV were to drop Jackson’s name, they should drop the award altogether. (The first Vanguard award was presented at the inaugural VMAs in 1984; Jackson’s name was added in 1991.)

“They should have dropped the idea of dropping his name,” Naughty By Nature’s Vin Rock said to Variety. “Mike is the man. He’s the epitome of an artist, a musician, overall talent, so you can never take away his body of work, so to have a statue or an award named after him, that should definitely stay.

“You’ve got to drop the whole award if you drop his name. Just drop it,” DJ Kay Jee added. “The music stands for itself and stands the test of time, and I don’t think it’s fair that he’s not here anymore to even be able to defend himself versus a lot of things that’s going on. So definitely, if you’re going to drop his name, drop the award.”

I agree 1000% percent. They need to drop the entire award, because it means nothing if they take Michael’s name off of it. MTV has been wish-washy about this award for years. Some years they use Michael’s name and some they don’t. MTV trash and I can’t stand them.

I agree completely.

THE MICHAEL JACKSON VIDEO VANGUARD AWARD IS GONE

If you recall, last year VMA (Video Music Awards) dropped Michael Jackson name from “Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award” following “Leaving Neverland” and the channel got a lot of back lash from it.

Well, in this year VMA which was clearly pre-recorded and winners were clearly decided before hand (like that they could perform on stage with no crowd) MTV and VMA completely changed the award to MTV Tricon Award which Gaga won last night!

It seems that MTV, who would have been nothing without the breakthrough of Michael Jackson’s videos, has decided to completely detached themselves from Michael Jackson based on false accusations.

With the change of the music industry and the less importance in the music video as a support marketing tool to promote music, is this anyway a sign of the end of MTV and VMA? Is dropping Michael Jackson’s name from the award will mark the end of the channel and its purpose?

In a way, we hope so. MTV is part of a glorious past for the music industry but the relevance of music video is just secondary in a world of streaming and consuming music like no tomorrow. Artists are making music at a rapid pace to stay relevant in a world where young music lovers are easily bored and always in a search for the next best thing.

While Michael Jackson’s short films were made with care and love for the art, they will stand the passing of time and stay in the history books. The future of MTV is less glamorous.

So do we need to be infuriated by MTV’s move to remove Michael Jackson’s name? Maybe not! Michael Jackson made MTV what it was, in its whole glory. MTV is no longer that! MTV tries to stay relevant and try to be as politically correct in a world dominated by a “me too” movement that has been corrupted by many false allegations in a monetary gain. MTV is no longer taking risks or recognizing artists that are taking those risks. MTV is now a follower of trends. MTV is no longer making trends. Like many award shows, the winners are no longer recognized for their talent but more for their popularity or how big the cheque was for their contribution to the award show. So do we really want Michael Jackson’s name to be attached to a fake, decadent and corrupted institution? I leave that to your own judgement but I made mine and the answer is hell to the no.

So thank you MTV for all your good work back in the days but today is the day I am saying goodbye to MTV and the VMAs. The lead of that coffin is closing slowly.

The VMAs had just over 700,000 viewers last night. Dead as a dodo.

That Tricon award is a new award with a different purpose. I don't think it's replaced the Vanguard award. The Vanguard award isn't given out every year.

MTV sucks now. it was suppose to be a music channel to show mostly music videos. nowadays they show trash tv and not even a music channel anymore. they also trying their hardest to take Michael out of everything. seriously this channel need to rebrand. everybody can watch music videos on youtube now etc. there's really no point of having music videos channels anymore. this is end of an era.

Who cares? MTV Awards are irrelevant nowadays. Michael is bigger than MTV.

Yeah, I think it's a different award.

Yes, I think it was a misunderstanding, and it blew up when MTV Brazil posted a tweet that Tricon was indeed the replacement for the MJ Vanguard. They deleted the tweet shortly after, but the damage was done.

Anyway, the way it went down, MTV is now well aware that the world doesn’t want MJ’s award to go anywhere.
