Taken from a Janet board...

...and the second most successful as well. She actually dominates in Hot 100 chart success overall, with 50% of the list below to her credit.

From the book, Billboard's Hottest Hot 100 Hits 4th Edition:

All nine of Joe and Katharine Jackson's children have been represented on The Billboard Hot 100. Michael, Jermaine, Tito, Jackie, Marlon, Randy, Janet, LaToya, and Rebbie, in that order, have had singles enter the chart.

Janet Jackson signed with A&M Records in November 1982. Her first two albums failed to produce any top 40 hits, but that became irrelevant when her third LP, Control, hit the streets. Produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the album rapidly yielded five top five hits: 'What Have You Done For Me Lately' (No. 4), 'Nasty' (No. 3), 'When I Think Of You' (No. 1), 'Control' (No. 5), and 'Let's Wait Awhile' (No. 2). Janet kept up the barrage of hits with the Rhythm Nation 1814 album. Her 1993 single, 'That's The Way Love Goes', is the most successful Jackson family single in Billboard history.

LOL @ the family having their own section in Billboard's book.

Good for janet but it's all about album sales(well it used to be) so Michael wins!

Poor Rebie and Latoya...they ahd some good songs and 3T was huge in Europe, well anyways Katherine and Joe must be very proud of their family's success :)

Hasn't Michael always been more appreciated abroad than in the US? Well done Janet though.

I would not have expected TTWLG to be Janet's biggest selling US single!

Michael is the J5/Jacksons their hits were due to him. Michael was appreciated in the US before he was accused of child molestation. Artists loose popularity because they get outdated, Michael lost it because he was slandered, the whole nation/world was on a mission hunt him down and crucify him. There is huge difference between these two issues. The fact that he still was able to have the kind of success he had after the allegations, after the witch hunt, after the defamation is a prove of his celebrity. Had it been anyone he/she would have went down without being able to sell one lousy record anymore.

Wait a minute, the single Thriller didn't even make the list? That's very strange.

Most excellent points!

It didn't hurt R.Kelly, Elvis Presley, or the many rock and heavy metal acts who slept with underaged groupies. The difference being that they weren't accused of sleeping with boys. Men having sex with teen girls tends to be ignored, but homosexuality is looked down upon like with Gary Glitter and Catholic priests. Unfortunately, that's the way it goes.

which was exactly twinklee's point...if any other celeb went through half of what MJ did in regards to the media and public opinion, they would never had sold another record...

She better WERKKK!!
:hysterical: at her owning 50% of the list

R. Kelly would like to disagree. He sold millions and millions during his trial. That fact is MJ wasn't selling as well as he used to. Invincible didn't do that well and this was before his second allegations.

I have always pondered this, and from the media attenton that those cases get you are right sadly. I mean if those fake accusers two were girls (and black girls at that, because the accused that you mentoned like R kelly and Elvis and the girls were the same race as the guys that they slept with.), that never would have even been damaging to him. And some of the haters wouldn't have even cared about it.

I hate the world sometimes.

As for the topic on hand, I love the Jacksons best selling music family of all time.

Maybe, but Invincible sold what it did with little promotion. Anyway, most acts over a certain age don't get radio play for new releases. It's always been that way.

R-kelly was on trial for f""king an underage GIRL, to many, THAT wasn't a problem...He was NOT blackballed, much of his music was still being played by urban stations (which has always been his main money making demographic to begin with) again...If he had gone through what MJ did...he would not have sold anything during or immediatley after

Of Course MJ wasn't selling like he used to then...Janet aint selling like she used to NOW (every artist goes through this) but the fact that invincible still managed 5 mill in it's first two months of release and 13 mill overall despite the drama with Sony and little to NO promotion says to me that the album did pretty damn well.

And great for Janet dominating that list...no shade, but I think we can all agree that she's always primarily been a singles artist...much like Rihanna is now.

Which is not bad...it still get's you a place on Billboards Comulative lists'

What makes you think people didn't find his sex tape appalling? He didn't get such a big backlash because he followed it up with a really good album. MJ made the mistake of not releasing jack since 2001! It was smart marketing on R. Kelly's part to release an album during his trial. He still got support from Pop radio as well and people can't say he was only getting support from the black community. A majority of his support and sales is from the Pop audience (white people).

Invincible didn't sell no 13 million. LMAO! It sold a total of 7 million worldwide.

Janet is hardly a singles artist. I guess going by your logic Mariah Carey is a singles artist since she has 18 #1's

oh girl...you just validated my freaking point...Yes, your right, R-kelly WAS still getting support from radio...and thanks for clearing up from WHOM that support was coming, apparently not JUST black people but white as well. Hmmm why do you think he was still getting support??? BECASUE PEOPLE DID NOT CARE THAT HE WAS CAUGHT F**KING A YOUNG GIRL...as we all now thats pretty much the norm amoung Rappers and R&B types. Sure some people were "outraged" but clearly not enough.

And how was MJ releasing an album in 2001 (6 years after History and 4 years after Blood) a mistake???? he wasn't doing anything out of the ordinary there...

Lmao girl bye...Wether you want to believe it or not Invincible sold 13 mill lmao...and that was despite the BS from Sony...

Where did you get the 7m figure please??

How was it a mistake that Michael never released anything after 2001?? If you have been living under a rock or too busy up Janet's ass, you will remember 2 years after Invincible (an album that had lack of promotion), absurd and unfounded allegations hit Michael. Whatever plans he had, were all put on hold when he was fighting for his life.

The fact the Michael's back catalogue was still selling millions pre and post 2005 trial says what??

How can you compare R Kelly's situation to Michael's?? LMAO!!

Janet has not had major success outside of the States. I live in the UK and you hardly hear of her music on radio/tv channels. Even at her peak, her songs were never big hits here and in Europe. When was the last time her album sold over the 7m figure you quoted out of the air for Invincible?

So stop throwing MJ under the bus. Besides, majority of your posts are about Janet, on a Michael Jackson forum. Strange!

But good on her for having more singles on the Billboard chart as a solo artist.

DuranDuran with all due respect tell me when and where and in which universe Elvis Presley and heavy metal lead acts were persecuted the way Michael Jackson was? R. Kelly didn't go thru 1/4 of what Michael Jackson had to endure. At least try to make sense with this argumentation. U were here, I was here, we all were here, nothing came close the witch hunt against Michael Jackson, it has to do with far more than just homosexuality, but I will bite my tongue. Elvis Presley kept on getting a pass. No one was haunted like Michael Jackson was, I don't see how u can sit there and seriously compare those people to what happened to Michael

Yeah, it's homosexuality that is looked down upon more. Look at what happened with George Michael & Tevin Campbell. In the US at least, George's career died after he was outed. And it's a definite no-no in the African American community, like with Tevin Campbell. Hispanic culture also tends to be macho based, so the Ricky Martin being in the closet.

UKmix

Oh please! If MJ had released an album during his trial it would've done will due to the fact he's in a situation where he's the underdog. In America, there's the mentality that we should all cheer on the underdog. Its embraced in American culture.

You seem upset. That has nothing to do with the topic.

How couldn't you!?! LMAO! Stop being biased. MJ was being accused of child molestations. R. Kelly - child pornography. Both were accused of having intimate relationships with underage children. Both are black. I can go on and on.

Thank you, Captain Obvious.

Yes, because stating facts is throwing MJ under the bus
