Re: New Pics:Michael visits LA Antique store

Im my opinion it's a PR stunt..

he comes out dressed in a way to get attention, and mysteriously has a burnt CD with hand writting on it..

Could it just so happen to get the media talking about it? The clothing grabs the attention, gets the ppl talking, then the CD spins talk about him recording...

Thats how I see it..

Nice to see him wear a fadora for once.. I LOVE IT!! but lets just wear it with his everyday wear..

Re: New Pics:Michael visits LA Antique store

Come on, guys, Mike doesn't look that bad. The only thing that's off is the mask/fedora combination, otherwise Mike would look really stylish!

And Michael has worn much worse things out in public before. At least he's healthy and looks happy, that's all that matters.

Re: New Pics:Michael visits LA Antique store

Great photos thankyou to the original poster for them!
Can someone confirm the date these photos were taken?

Re: New Pics:Michael visits LA Antique store

L.J. Thanks for your thoughtful, and brave, post. (I'll attempt to match your bravery here. LOL)

Folks, this is a discussion board, and people have a right to their opinions within the parameters of respect and common sense (and board rules). It is ok to have an opinion. It is not ok to bash people if their opinions are different from yours. Doing that just creates strife and negativity and is about as useful as arguing about politics or religion at a cocktail party. Within the aforementioned parameters, people DO have a right to express themselves.

In terms of the photos. . . .. I'm all for personal expression/expression of self. I also agree with L.J.'s "funny farm" remark, only I'd couch it more in terms of "a few fries short of a happy meal. " It would be great if we were all free (from abuse and criticism) to express ourselves. With that said, there are certain cultural norms that make for smooth functioning of human interactions. I would not wear shorts in an Italian cathedral, for example. Lots of Americans (and some others) do just that. I would not wear army boots to a wedding. And so on. Paradoxically, I would like to be free to do so, and I would still choose not to.

MIchael gets a lot of abuse from the press. His fans catch abuse, too, from those things that he does that seem. . . unusual. It's not right, but it does happen, at this moment in cultural evolution. He does not like being called "a few fries short of a happy meal." His choices are, to understand and conform to a minimal parameter of what is usually accepted, or not. If not, sadly, there will be abuse. Such abuse is NOT right, but it is reality. One must pick one's battles. If one's personal expression in clothing is really, really important to one's identity, then go for it.

It's a complex situation, but his choice of attire IS "problematizing." What we have here is a middle-aged, immensely talented rock-star who has basically been shredded by media for decades. This must be painful. Also what we have here is a middle-aged, immensely talented rock-star who chose to go out in an outfit that is not from his own culture, and in mainstream, American culture, looks very much like a dress. That's ok. But, on top of that (literally) is a fedora, a very male-associated item. This fedora is paired with a lacy woman's scarf, although Michael has not shaved and is sporting stubble. OK? This might, just possibly, have flown without the zorro mask, but. . . . . .seriously? I mean . . . . . . . really?

Personally, my vote would be for him not to have gone out that way, because the negative outweighs the positive in terms of media reaction, and this particular battle is simply not worth it.

This is my opinion, and I respect the opinions of others even if different from mine.

Victoria

What a wonderful way to wake up. Come on here and see Michael dressed like that just puts a big smile on my face! Love it! :D :zorro:

Re: New Pics:Michael visits LA Antique store

Damn, Michael's lost it, lol.

Without diving too deep into it, I just wish Michael wouldn't do these things. We all know about Michael's public reputation. I know "it doesn't matter blah blah blah", but it does, regardless if you're in a state of denial or not.

and the beat goes on.....and the beat goes on

Re: New Pics:Michael visits LA Antique store

Da man said hes normal?? why does he come out looking like this? what is the point?? do you know how embarrassing this is??

Re: New Pics:Michael visits LA Antique store

i just looooooooooove these outfits. Long time ago i had one arab dress like that i used when i was at home in summer with like 40ºC and it's great cuz with only that thing on it's like you have no clothes on and you can bear heat a little better:)

Re: New Pics:Michael visits LA Antique store

Something tells me this thread needs to be closed as everyone keeps bickering about the same dang thing time and time again! Who cares how Michael looks okay people! He wants to dress that way it's his proagative! We have seen him in many disguises throughout the years even back in the late seventies so why should we let it bother us? Michael loves disguises even if it's for fun. We have heard tales where he has even done it to try and fool his own friends.

Re: New Pics:Michael visits LA Antique store

Even though I think this is quite funny, I would wish we wouldn't do it.

The general puplic - the people who needs to buy his music if he wants to come back - they do not approve this. They will say he is weird and a freak. AND talking about stuff like this, it's hard to disagree. I've never ever seen a man in my town dress like this. I know MJ is not anyone, but I understand why people who aren't fans, would say he is weird.

It doesn't do anything good for MJ when the tabloids are bringing these stories! So I just wish he wouldn't do it. This makes him an easy target!

gurl, omg its not even funny media is all over mike for pass 2 weeks brinign lies and stuff, and now this....??!?!?!? this is mess man

Re: New Pics:Michael visits LA Antique store

I loves you, Michael Jackson :)

Re: New Pics:Michael visits LA Antique store

I'm going to say it again. Please respect one another and the variety in opinions. You can express your own. If you are wanting to criticize and argue, take it to PM. Just dig deep and be respectful. And for those who constantly criticize others' opinions, do you really understand how this reflects on YOU most of all? It actually does. . . . .

And the beat goes on.

Re: New Pics:Michael visits LA Antique store

Not at that times when he dresses against other peoples expectations or taste, I am sure he does this in full awareness and know what it will bring....... he cares about the tabloids when they really hurt him in his human rights or his right to be loved or left alone.

exactly

Re: New Pics:Michael visits LA Antique store

I have been a fan of MJ for over 20yrs, just before people attack me for what I'm about to say and love and respect MJ and his family.

Now how does MJ expect the media and public to stop calling him ***** or ***** when he comes out dressed like this. I think it is rather sad. Also how would you feel if your dad went around dressed like that.
I think these outfits are getting tired. I just feel so sorry for him, as he doesn't need to dress or act like this to be noticed.

true! he doesnt have to do this??
and why are somes fans on here attacking us if we dont agree on what mike is wearing? i thought we have are own opinion?

Re: New Pics:Michael visits LA Antique store

the tabloids look for stories no matter what. he's not in the poorhouse because of it. and it's been going on for ahwhile, now.

Re: New Pics:Michael visits LA Antique store

Well calling Michael a fool is disrespectful, and I thought one of the rules on this here forum was you had to respect Michael Jackson. But I guess respecting other members is more important then respecting the man whom the forum is dedicated to.

Some of you like to wallow in your own negativity.

Wow. Sorry. I know you are dead serious but your description of Michael's dress (albet accurate) had me in stitches. Yes. He was comical but I believe he meant it to be so. He is messin'.

My reply your comment about 'minimal adherance to a 'norm' however is this:

As I tried to say before, conforming to norms does not necessarily work. The 'minimal' keeps getting more and more narrowly restricted if it is allowed to. It then takes the work of one brave soul to open that window up again.

I worked a couple of semesters in an inner city school this last year. If I recall correctly, 80% of the students there came from families at or below the poverty level. Even so almost all of the students managed to wear 'designer' clothes and expensive name brand shoes. The style for the guys was also that godawful 'pants being held up by your penis' style. The couple of kids who did not conform to this were outcastes and mercilously slammed for anytjing they did. One day the teacher for the class, who came to the U.S. from Jamaica, laid into the class about it. She gave about a ten minute speech to them about predjudice. She said that she had never known predjudice until she came here. She was black, I should add, and so was 95% of the class (that is called integrated, sic) but I do not believe she was referring specifically predjudices against blacks. At least in this case she wasn't. She said if they didn't like being treated with predjudice themselves they should not treat others that way because they were 'different' or didn't dress like they did. That what they were doing was no different and they should know what it felt like. I think it was one of the few times she was ever able to reach them.

The reason I told this story is that the kids that were picked on were not dressed in any outlandish way. They dressed as their parents could afford to dress them. One kid was 'overweight' so that added to the reasons he was picked on. These were things that should not have defined how they were treated. I don't know how poor parents managed to buy designer clothes for their kids but I question the tradeoffs they must have made. I know I was not able to dress my kids to the current style and still pay my bills and yes, it made it harder for them in school. Where do we draw the line as to what is the norm. When do we stop paying more attention to clothes than the heart and mind of the person wearing them. And a good chunk of the kids in that school are going to end up in jail. I guarantee it. On any given day 5 out of a class of 30 are sent home or to the office,

To me, Michael's last escapade, in addition to being back to the game of free PR (looks around fearfully for Densers) hopefully for an imminent album release, it takes and sets to whole value system thing on its end. It bravely says' f that' to all of the petty rules of conformity that get people to go unquestioning in lockstep with the status quo. He pushes it to the obvious extreme. It opens up that window for those who may just need to wear something other than designer clothes. It is okay. The clothes is not important.

BTW, I might add, my kids grew up to have incredible strength, character, resilliance, and concern for others... something I cannot say for a large number of their designer clothes wearing conforming classmates. We cannot stop bullies from bullying but we can learn to not give them the importance they seek, thereby freeing us all up to be who and what we truly are.

this outfit is REALLY very cool, but it is very different to this one.

And don't forget 20 years ago Michael's image was really different too.

Re: New Pics:Michael visits LA Antique store

i just what to ask why does MJ do this dress like that just asking  ;)

Re: New Pics:Michael visits LA Antique store

i just can't understand why? but oh well, i don't wanna get banned so ill leave it be, i just hope he doesnt look like this when he makes a comeback...

Re: New Pics:Michael visits LA Antique store

Not really, people were calling him a freak as early as 1983. That outfit is no cooler and no stranger then the one he has on in this recent picture. Only difference is, he's wearing the mask over his eyes and not over his mouth.
