Michael Jackson: The Life of an Icon by David Gest (merged)

Re: Michael Jackson: The Life of an Icon - Excl Advanced Blu-ray & DVD Cover Preview *Update Post 13

Basically how she spent 10-12 hours a day with Michael and didn't expect him to be such a decent and modest man unlike many celebrities with big egos.
Said many people didn't know that the magazines found in the raid were actually sent by mail from other people as Michael received many gifts and books from fans, he didn't actually go out and buy them himself.
Also, Said the amount of evidence collected by Santa Barbara was ridiculously large and laborous to sift through for them so much so that they prepared for 500 witnesses, more police(70 police cars) sent in to collect evidence the than the infamous manson case .. the prosecution did all that just to prove that they were wrong in accusing Michael in 2005 as he was found not guilty.

TMez also said that before taking on the case, many people warned him and said it could ruin his career and reputation if he lost the case and he'd be taunted as the man that sent MJ to jail. Despite the risks, he and susan decided to pursue it and Thank God they did!

Michael Jackson's iconic life, starring David Gest | Music | The Guardian
Smokey Robinson recalls hearing him sing his song Who's Lovin' you, at the age of 11, and wondering how such a tiny kid could understand the pain of love and loss so profoundly. And you listen to the song, and it could easily be sung by an old man closing in on life. Dionne Warwick tells of the first time she met him, and asked him what he did. "I sing," he said. "Are you good?" she asked. "Oh yes," he said. Many of the testimonies are moving.

But none more so than his mother, Katherine, here given the chance tell her side of the story of Michael's life. In her face, we see the older Michael as he should have been. As he should be. "Children are supposed to bury parents not parents bury children," she says. "That's what hurts most."

There are simple goodies and baddies in the film. The baddies are Martin Bashir, whose television interview led to Jackson's second charge of child molestation, the police and prosecutors, and of course the doctor, Conrad Murray, on trial for involuntary manslaughter.
Meanwhile, in another room Jackson's brother Tito and less well known sister Rebbie sit quietly. In the documentary, Tito says: "To have to carry your brother to his grave… a major part of you dies with that."

More than two years on from Jackson's death, aged 50, they look as if they are still in mourning. They describe the Michael they remember – the loving brother, the joker who would whisper into Rebbie's ear that a cockroach was climbing up her leg as she was singing live.

Rebbie says towards the end of his life it felt as if Michael was beyond their help. "It was very difficult at times. It's important when someone is in that space to be able to have hands on to some extent because you have people around you who are yes yes yes people."

She talks about the trial of Dr Conrad Murray, which is reaching its conclusion, and the need for justice. "The entertainment is one thing, but him being our brother is another thing."

Katherine Jackson statement on world premiere ‘The Life of an Icon’

“I am very sorry that I cannot attend the World Premiere in London of a film I so strongly believe in, Michael Jackson: The Life of an Icon. Due to the verdict in the trial of Dr Conrad Murray possibly being at that time, I want to be present in the court room for reasons I am sure everyone in the world will understand.

David Gest, who was one of Michael’s closest life-long friends, has done a brilliant job in enlightening people to who the real Michael Jackson was. This movie is a true vindication of my son and some of the terrible things that he was put through in his life. I hope people will watch this film and understand more.”

I purchased the DVD and was not that impressed. The bits about the drugs were unecessary in my opinon and quite tabloidish. The old footage was good and interview with Katherine etc. Rebbie's comments irritated me. It seems to me alot of family members don't seem to know as much as they make out when it comes to discussing Michael's health.
I agree the portion of the DVD that dealt with the allegations was very good and probably why T-Mez supports it.

Tumblr:
Just watched the David Gest MJ documentary. Nothing new. Some parts were SUPER tacky like using the 911 call at the beginning and claiming Michael was “asexual” as usual.
Also just as I suspected they COMPLETELY jumped over The Wiz and Michael’s time in New York. Don’t people realise what a big point this was in his life?!
Edit: I’ll send my dvd to whoever wants to watch it. It was such a waste of 25 dollars to me, LOL.
Blah.

Looks like this dvd is getting really mixed reviews.
Some people are praising it, thinking it's the best docu ever it seems. (Mostly non-fans, professionel people it seems)
Yet a lot of fans are saying it's dissapointing, features stories we already know and basically the trial part is the best part.
Wasn't David Gest saying at some point that like around 90% of this is dvd contains new information when fans seem to say the opposite?

Sounds to me this is mostly just like most documentaries on michael before except now that michael isn't here people aren't watching their words as much. (Whether good or bad) Which is what I thought it was going to be like anyway.
I think I'll just look up the trial part at some point.

Not surprise.

I love T-Mez and i respect him very much, not just for what he did for Michael but him as a person. But, I suspected from the beginning when he talked about how good the doc was is that he never really seen too many Michael Jackson documentaries. If he had, he would had seen that if followed pretty much the same format except now they add drugs, beyond help, and doctors to the blender.

Really Rebbie? Was he 'beyond' help when he was at your family dinner and none of you said crap about drugs? Was he beyond help when your father and his friend hounded Michael about touring with you brothers when he visited for your niece's birthday party? Was he beyond help when you didn't even bother to visit him at all during his last months? Go date your boyfriend Stacy, two-face.

Anyway, thanks for the reviews. I kind of wish I was wrong about this since there are very little good docs about Michael. Honestly, the best doc I've seen on Michael is BET's Michael Jackson: A Black Icon and Living with Michael Jackson. Yeah, I know Bashir screwed up and edited the heck out of it for his own agenda, but Michael himself came out very well, specially the first hour. I guess we can also count TII movie as a doc, which stands above the rest.

From LSA:
Nickolas Ashford shares a story about Quincy trying to hook Mike up with a girl and he was sat between the girl and Mike and so Quincy was expecting him to help him match make

Quincy was throwing out hints about the two of them being "young people and ahahaha  " and Mike was all

And Mike leaned over to Nickolas and whispered, "What am I supposed to say to her?"

He was saying Mike was too shy and young, etc and after dinner instead of going to talk with the girl, he went off with the kids...:giggle:

Whitney: "I really wanted to marry Michael and you [David Gest] were in the way all the time, so that's why."
David: "He should've married you."
Whitney: "Yeah he damn well should've, right."
David: "I love you so much."
Whitney: "I love you, too."

(anyone else think Whitney seemed a bit drunk?)

From what I've seen, no fan really thinks it's bad. It's just isn't the masterpiece that T-Mez has suggested it was. Gest and others made it seem that there was no other doc like this and it was unique. With those high expectations, it fell severely.

From the reviews, this doc seems to fall, 'So Okay, It's Average'.

Re: Michael Jackson: The Life of an Icon - Excl Advanced Blu-ray & DVD Cover Preview *Update Post 13

Just finished watching it.

Yes the Jackson 5 days were discussed for too long, yes none of his solo music was played, yes some may criticise the fact that some private anecdotes were shared that Michael may not have wanted shared, but the last 30 minutes nearly brought me to tears. Discussing the trial and his death was just very emotional. It just continues to emphasise how badly Michael was treated in the last years of his life, how he was butchered by the media, how he was bullied and taunted, how so many leeches took advantage of him.

Michael may have made some misjudgments and mistakes in his life - like we all do - but his heart and his motives were ALWAYS in the right place. He had a child-like innocence about him that is so obvious if you just take the time to get to know and understand his true nature and his life experiences. To see how he was institutionally bullied was heartbreaking - I say institutionally because it was ingrained within the media to continue to assassinate his character. It obviously had a devastating effect on his spirit. The stress and emotional torture of all that scrutiny, with the '93 allegations, the trial and everything else, obviously had such a bad effect on his emotional state and must have contributed significantly to his chronic insomnia.

Not only should Dr Murray be convicted for manslaughter, but many people in the media and the Santa Barabara District Attorney's office, and the Chandlers and the Arvizos should all be made aware that they were also responsible.

I really don't think it's as bad as some people are making out. There are parts in it I think are a bit suspect, but overall it's very positive towards Michael.

I agree with a lot of what you say...although I do think a lot of the anecdotes had already been 'aired' in Gests's book 'David Gest ....Simply the Gest', which came out some time ago.

I thought that , for what it was, the film was put together very well in terms of comments from music industry insiders (producers, musicians etc) from the early days. However, I thought that it had maybe been put together too soon after Michael's death, when everyone is still 'in shock' to some degree, and so from the 'pepsi commercial' accident onwards, everything seemed to be 'leading towards' Michaels death. In fact, I would have titled this 'The Birth and death of an icon' (ie the 'musical' birth) as a lot of the period in between was hardly alluded to at all. (The court case was dealt with in terms of another milestone towards Michael's death.) I don't think we'll really see a good 'career' documentary until more time has passed, and until someone can put together film which includes good footage from 'solo' concerts &etc.

I really wish that this documentary did not start with the phone call to the emergency services on 25/6, and I wish it did not end with the breaking news from the hospital. I would have preferred to be left on a 'high' ie remembering all Michael's achievements...Even if there was just a list of awards scrolling up the screen at the end.

Re: Michael Jackson: The Life of an Icon - Excl Advanced Blu-ray & DVD Cover Preview *Update Post 13

So people have to hear private stories about Michael drinking and throwing up in order for them so see him as human? wow.....that death photo should humanize him enough for them.

This whole thing is about David Gest and David Gest alone.
THANK YOU!!! When I see this statement thrown all over this forum, that hearing/seeing intimate personal things about Michael makes him seen as more human to the public/haters, I cringe.

If that statement was true, then in the 80s when Michael wrote his book showing he had to work as a child in sex dens and had to make adult decisions about music production, then people would have seen him in a kinder light and have empathy for him. It did not happen, because the 80s really saw the beginning of vicious media and bullying of Michael.

If that statement was true then when Micael married--a human activity--how come he was not seen as human, but his marriage was scoffed at. When he had his children--a human activity--how come he was not embraced with love but he and his kids were made fun of. When he showed his interpersonal relationships at home with his children--a human activity--how come it was also used as comic relief and used to degrade him and arrest him. When he gave his money, time, talents to help others for free--a human activity--how come these were not plastered all over the media to show what a caring and humane person he was.

Now we have to wait for people to share some more so-called private moments of Michael in order for haters to see an already human person as a human. Why is it that certain people have to stoop so low to get this type of evidence to show that this man is human.

To me, these intimate private moments are not going to do anything but give certain people ammunition which they can twist to serve their purpose.

If certain people want to see the DVD, then fine, but to use the idea that the information will show Michael as human is really disrespectful and demeaning to a man who has shown several times over how much of a human he is.
