Michael Jackson estate, Sony Music Entertainment strike record distribution deal

Right now the deal sounds good to me. I rather see Michael's legacy continue living than leaving his creations and music to dust.

I just hope Sony will play their cards correctly and fairly and won't use the deal to come up with just another compilation albums with old songs we already have on several albums.
Reeta weren't you a mod before? Sry off topic :p

I can't say I am pleased with this deal, knowing how MJ felt about Sony. It may be a good financial deal for his estate, and we may well get new material... but it's with Sony.

And with MJ being so close to becoming a free agent makes this seem all the more criminal.

Then again, I am just a big MJ fan who does not understand all the in's and out's of the industry.

i agree. nobody's a know it all, except MJ, about this...

i just hope it works out for the best for his kids. it looks like an addition. thankfully, his kids will do alright, no matter what.

Mj was a free agent. He didn't have a record deal at the time of his death.

I think the poster was talking about this maybe? -

A record contract struck in the early 1980s gave Mr. Jackson ownership of his recordings. Sony had the right to distribute those recordings through 2015. The new deal extends that right until 2017, and adds the rights to material recorded since then.

Or maybe the video with Michael talking about nearly being free.

in the scheme of things none of it matters

I keep thinking that the situation could have been the same and at the same time totally different. If Michael were here, there would have been the concerts and the world would have remembered Michael Jackson the entertainer. Michael would have sold those 31 mln albums and got all these new fans. And there would have been a new albums and all the other projects... But it would have been different from our situation because Michael would have been here to enjoy all this. And we all would have been so happy.

Do speak your mind, Stacey. I know the recent trend here has been that one's opinion isn't valued if it's not something positive, but I think everyone should feel free to express how they really feel. I don't understand why "negativity" has become a curseword around here, lol. And why differing opinions are immediately viewed as negative.

I personally don't have a problem with Sony releasing new material. Even though it's bittersweet because Michael isn't here anymore, I'm excited about getting a new album this year! But I don't mind reading different viewpoints, brings more flavor to the conversation. :)

thank you.(although i know u weren't talking to me. lol) it is a free message board...except where disrespecting members is concerned.

i just want those songs
Aggggg.... if I almost broke my nerves waiting for my Opus, let's just think how some of us will be waiting for November....

Almost 8 months from now.... :timer:

Somebody should come and tell some jokes... it's gonna be a long wait :tease:

yes indeed he moved on. And I should do too, from here ...

How do they know MJ moved on. I guess he loved Sony so much he wanted to live and die there and there is no evidence he loved and moved on with Sony. There is evidence of the opposite but we close our eyes and ears to things we don't want to see and hear.

Well MJ was an entertainer and that is what we want fromMJ to entertain us in life and in death. The other stuff doesn't matter because he was put on earth for us. To do what we want him to do for us. WOW. When are we going to do something for him?

he worked with them on TUC thriller 25 etc etc, his issues was always with mottola not the company as a whole

i do appreciate this post. especially the question that ends it.

Isn't that because he had a contract and owed them a certain number of albums/projects before he was 'free', as he said in the video?

Can someone explain this -

A record contract struck in the early 1980s gave Mr. Jackson ownership of his recordings. Sony had the right to distribute those recordings through 2015. The new deal extends that right until 2017, and adds the rights to material recorded since then.

The last bolded part?

no. mjs contract ran out in 03. the final release of the 91 contract was the number one album

and adds the rights to material recorded since then.

The last bolded part?
its written poorly but what i think its saying is that any music mj recorded after 03 sony have the right to distrubute it. because mjs contract with sony ended in 03 any music mj recorded after that like all the stuff in ireland the estate totally owned. there was no right by sony like they have with music recorded/released when mj was signed to them. so i presume they are talking about that

MJ did not own his masters.
according to reports he owned the masters from i think bad upwards.the others would have reverted in 2011

u mean he fell out with them in 2009? wheres the reports evidence about that.
there is none b/c he didn't whatever happened was in early 2000s not in 2009 sticking to stuff that happened 7 to 8 years ago is irrelevant i wish ppl would have learned this by now.

well people not to be downer here...I KNOW Michael would be thrilled he is setting new records...he loved that stuff. for me..I just am not ready for knew stuff yet. I dont know how many of you feel the same way..maybe none..I dont know...I am still trying to get use to the idea that Michael is no longer here.Because if I hear new stuff then I am gonna want to here him sing it live in person...that cannot happen..:(..... But..what does sound very cool to me is the release of a new video game...I think that would of happened if he was here or not.

I think Sony is the best company to buy the rights to this music. I know it's a controversial thing to say, but Sony (the company) is the biggest and probably the best in the music business when it comes to releasing material into the market. This will be marketed very well (not that MJ music needs marketing) but they know just how to get the pitch right. They know that MJ's music will sell millions upon millions and they will want to get this right, almost as much as the fans want it done right. They want the money, we want the music, it pretty much works hand in hand, they know the demand for music that was never released is through the roof at the moment, even more so than when fans wanted it for years and years. Not only will fans buy it now, but the general public have an interest, we also have new kids getting into and discovering MJ, so this will be huge for Sony.

Cannot wait for this, it's the best news we have had in a very long time.

Elusive I can't quote for some reason but thanks for your answer.

what's interesting is, that the media always said that Universal music was the biggest and best. now, all of a sudden, after MJ's death, Sony is the biggest?

anyway, i think the gist of what makes some people feel so queasy about a lot of this is, the spirit that something MJ said, doesn't seem to be with Sony..and that is that MJ liked to blaze the trail, not follow it. if the last couple of albums that MJ released were totally new material, and there was no hint of Billie Jean on them, then, the queasy feeling people wouldn't be feeling so queasy.

fortunately, MJ's failsafe was that he never had writer's block. perhaps, in the end, he was able to settle, with that feeling. no props to sony for that. we're all fortunate, that MJ never had writer's block, so no deal or lack thereof, could mess up, MJ's legacy.

if sony made MJ feel like he didn't have to compromise, maybe he wouldn't want a new version of off the wall. maybe if MJ had writer's block, but sony respected his track record, enough to take whatever new song he would have written, without a need for t25, there'd be no queasyness among the queasy feeling people.

but the world knows, that we'll not be able to resist something never heard before, by MJ, even if it was written in 1980. sony knows that, too.

so...props to MJ's never having a dryspell.

i guess we can look at it as, he did write new material. he just wrote so much of it, that some of it is backlogged, as far as at least 1980. maybe he saw it that way, too..idk..

Well, but the thing is... you don't! You know how he felt about Sony (or more likely Motolla) almost 10 years ago, but you don't know how he felt about Sony last year! And it would make sense to think that Michael, would he still live, would go with the company who would give him the best deal/offer... and who's to say that Sony is not that company!

Very exciting news, though i am worried about apprehensive about the deal being made with SONY of all people. But here's hoping we'll have lots of new goodies in the coming years.

Hmm... how do you know?? How do you know that Michael's recent, unreleased material really lives up to his standard?? Just saying...
