ESSAY ALERT! Please skip if reading long posts ain't your thang. This is my closure post on the subject, I guess so...my apologies. :flowers:
You know, I think as sad as it may be to see some of this stuff up for auction, I imagine he's kept as much of the things that are dearest to him that he wants to keep. And we have to remember he had tons of stuff, some of it are probably duplicates. There was probably stuff in storage as well. If he's clearing out and moving on, it makes sense to get rid of the excess and multiple copies of books and whatnot. As far as the personal items maybe he's keeping other items of a similar nature that mean more? I mean, there's a LOT of candelabras in there. Apparently someone LOOOOVES candelabras. Who knows if there was one he couldn't part with for whatever reason and decided to keep it. And some of the other stuff looks replaceable. We saw him in that Off The Wall store not too long ago (multiple trips). He's probably already started a new stash for his new era. Old furniture, old urns and old statues out...new furniture, new urns and new statues in. lol Fresh items for fresh and new memories, yes? And how many trips to bookstores has he made since leaving Nevy? I'd say he's started a new stock already there as well.
Now, at first I thought it was kinda odd to let go of his awards. I don't remember awards going up for auction unless the person died or their stuff had been seized by some godforsaken agency whose name I dare not even type! Neither is the case here so that gave me pause for a bit. That's kinda rare altho I could be wrong. THEN I realized how many awards Michael has. He has awards on top of awards. In 1984 he had enough to fill both arms at the AMAs and the Grammys alone. SO, to see him part with a couple of them isn't really that dramatic. Nor does he probably see it as a loss. He's got tons left. Now, had we heard of him auctioning off all of them, that would make me think hmmmm...... If you think about it, the awards kinda sweeten the pot for museums and galleries, etc... who like to have celebrity memorabilia on display. To acquire items like that while the artist is still alive is probably a deal for them. Throwing in some awards, imo, seems to be another way of making things more interesting for serious collectors/dealers.
As for the gifts people have given him and the painting of Prince...well, maybe there's another painting or more that he IS keeping. I imagine he has lots. The first born always has lots of paintings and pictures. Ask Blanket and the baby of any family. Firstborns get a baby book, their booties gets bronzed...the whole shebang. By the time baby 3,4, & 5 come along it's like yeah, okay (and no, I am NOT bitter about that LOL). And Michael prolly has more gifts than he could possible use or appreciate in his lifetime. Heck, one of them was used in a desperate attempt to try and convict him. There's probably stuff there he has no attachment to cuz he didn't even know he had it or hasn't seen it since forever. That Michael Jordan basketball is going to make some basketball fan extremely happy...or an MJ fan who is also a Jordan fan. A sports memorabilia place might even have their eye on it. A gift from one legend to another. How rare is that? Lots of that stuff may have never been on display at all becuz he had nowhere to show it. Why keep it buried or stored away unappreciated? I hope Michael Jordan and all the giftgivers understand that tho. :fear:
Anway, I have to say this has got to be one of the top 10 most admirable things I've seen Michael do. That he's not only left the property but getting rid of the contents as well seems pretty big. He spent a lot of time and years collecting a lot of that stuff so to get rid of it had to be a big decision. To completely start your life over is a big deal lots of people never make. Twenty years is a loooong time. That he could turn away from a big part of what was the last 20 years of his life and start fresh is a very grown up thing to do. Much respect....even tho I believe for all the things we see going up for auction, there's probably just as much that he may have kept (altho I've yet to view all the catalogs at the moment).
Lastly, as sad as it is to see some of this stuff go, it's hard to find fault with it besides the reasons that led to it. But everything happens for a reason, even crappy and unfortunate things. An era has ended becuz maybe it was time for it to end...whether any of us, Michael included, were ready for it to end or not. In a way it's kind of exciting to see where things go from here. It's almost like a rebirth period and to see what will happen now or what will materialize for the next 20 years (God willing) is interesting. As a fan it's a bit weird cuz Nevy always seemed to be Michael's settling place (besides the Encino home)...regardless of how he was rarely there and travelled the world. It was like a base...a given...an identity. And now that "given" is officially being done away with. At the same time there's a part of me that is excited to a) see what the next base will turn out to be, if there ever is one and b) see what new identity emerges. Will it be more of the same just in a different place, something slightly different, or something we never could have seen coming? It's a new beginning either way and instead of being sad about it, I'm going to be thankful that he has the option to begin again. The question now is WHAT's he going to do with it? It's a bit bittersweet BUT it should be fun to see what unfolds in the coming years.
