Campaigners kick up a stink after Lady Gaga attends MTV Video Music Awards in an outfit made of raw meat

There have been dresses adorned with Kermit the Frog, an outfit of transparent plastic bubbles, and a nude leotard teamed with tweed jacket and NHS specs – but when Lady Gaga took to the stage to accept an award at last night's MTV Video Music Awards in hat, dress and boots apparently made of various cuts of raw meat, it was a touch outré, even for the queen of extreme.

The singer's decision was fiercely criticised by animal rights campaigners. Ingrid Newkirk, the Peta founder, said the outfit – which is thought to have been real meat, although that has not been confirmed – could have a detrimental effect on the artist's record sales.

"In her line of business, Lady Gaga has a hard time being 'over the top', and wearing a dress made from cuts of dead cows is offensive enough to elicit comment, but someone should whisper in her ear that more people are upset by butchery than are impressed by it – and that means a lot of young people will not be buying her records if she keeps it up," she said.

Newkirk speculated that Gaga would have been surrounded by a distinctive perfume. "Meat is the decomposing flesh of an abused animal who didn't want to die, and after being under the TV lights, it would smell like the rotting flesh that it is and likely be crawling with maggots – not too attractive, really," she said.

Perhaps the most damaging criticism that could have been levelled at the provocative artist was the accusation that she is running out of ideas. It is not the first time Gaga has displayed a penchant for meaty attire, having recently posed in a "beef bikini" for the cover of Japan's Men's Vogue magazine.

The dress – cut asymetrically and with a cowl neck, for those with a sartorial bent – drew gasps from the crowds at the VMAs, where the singer claimed half of the available prizes. She won in eight categories, seven for her single Bad Romance. She also took home an award for best collaboration, for her record-breaking duet Telephone, featuring Beyoncé.

An emotional Gaga thanked her "little monsters" and the "gays" who remade the Bad Romance video, which has been watched nearly 278m times on YouTube and Vevo. She also highlighted her commitment to the Servicemembers Legal Defence Network, which campaigns on behalf of servicemen and women affected by the "don't ask, don't tell" policy passed by Congress in 1993, which the SLDN describes as "a law mandating the discharge of openly gay, lesbian, or bisexual service members."

She later confirmed that her new album would be called Born This Way, saying: "The message, the melodies, the direction, the meaning, what it will mean to my fans and what it will mean to me in my own life – it's utter liberation."

Referring to her outfit – and wearing her best poker face – Lady Gaga joked: "I never thought I'd be asking Cher to hold my meat purse."

:puke:

Of course they are upset. That is exactly why she wore it.

Animal Rights Activist - Aren't they a bit late.....I mean the animal is already dead.........or do they have "Dead Animal Rights Activists"!!!!!!!!

I'm more concerned about the wastage of food while countless millions go hungry........

......But she shouldn't get scrutinized for it as food companies waste a million times more food then her due to surplus stock reaching its sell by date (but it's still safe to eat)!!!!!!!

You're absolutely right. It wasn't real meat. There is NO WAY that it was real meat! Think about it... Real meat would start to stink, leave blood stains on anything it touches, and blood would be running down her face, hair, arms, and legs (since real meat leaks/drains). Common sense and logic should tell a person and Peta that it isn't real. I can't believe anyone would believe otherwise. Lady Gaga got exactly what she wanted, and that is attention.

It's also quite heavy no?

I hope that it most certainly was not real meat. I became a vegetarian due to how badly life is wasted. I gave it up because of how easily people throw away "meat left overs" like the life meant nothing. I know my not eating meat doesnt stop this, entirely, but it is my own personal contribution for animals. If it is real meat, I hope she plans on eating the entire lot of it, or else it's life would have been for nothing... well... for her contrived, bs "career" ... yuck.

wow..i just think u transcribed a death wish to Lady Gaga. that meat can't be that fresh now, if that's what it is. [i'm sure u didn't mean it..i just couldn't help but notice how things come across on the net, sometimes]

anyway... my take on Gaga, here...

the irony is this..
Gaga did this on the mtv video music awards. if she wanted to stand out, she should have agreed to make that appearance in that outfit, on the grammys. since she is trying to make waves, i presume. trying to draw attention to herself. how ironic. again. the artist, who obviously is everybody's influence to think that being ''eccentric'' is the key to success..Michael Jackson, appeared on the mtv music awards, in conservative dress, for his performance of "Dangerous' in 1995. so..we see, Michael never tried to draw attention to himself. he was not eccentric. the media was just envious of him. that is the big difference here.

and how about Cher? isn't she an extreme animal rights activist? one who espouses political causes of this nature? yet she didn't mind handing Gaga this award? now, Cher doesn't look happy. but, then(and get this) Cher, who got tons of plastic surgery..maybe that is her happy look) but do you hear the media making a big deal about the fact that Cher got lots of surgery? nope. and the media's reaction, themselves, to Gaga, was a whimper, at best. i believe their response was...'outre''. what was that? not much of a reaction. the media likes her. they just let peta do all the bellyaching. but the media, themselves, didn't. the media likes her. and the media likes Cher. and Cher is proof that you wonder if these celebrities are really genuine about their political beliefs, or, do they just react, if they don't like the person? it's way to easy for me to make comparisons to how Michael was treated, when i see all this.[don't wanna feel scared to post this on an MJ site]

by the way...peta's attempt to word things in a way that will dampen Lady Gaga's sales, will fall on deaf ears, if the media can help it, because the media definitely shows that they support Lady Gaga. they're not saying how her sales are doing. perhaps on purpose. but with all the play she'll continue to get on radio..the media, whose political stances, i'm vividly aware of, likes Gaga, anyway. and they'll be damned if they're going to let her young fans stop buying her records, if, indeed, her fans have slowed down their buying of her records. they'll program it into her young fans, because she's gunna continue to get much radio airplay.

:bugeyed Ok, absolutely done with her now... :mat: :puke: Ah well, you have to do something when you have no talent at all...! It's pathetic really...

LOL... are you serious? ... Please don't put words in to my mouth... or in to my post.

I'm saying that if it IS real meat, then she is just disregarding life like it is absolutely nothing is disgusting. Food / meat is not meant for fun and games. It's for eating and I am extremely against food wastage. She is just a controversy monger. I'd have a lot of respect for her if she just concentrated on her music.

This is a circus and it is disgusting.
Those were MUSIC awards not a "fashion-show" if you can call that crap a fashion.
Where did the music go ?! Where did the talent go ?!
Everything is so disgusting these days. More scandal, more awards. Sick.
And that could be the real meat, you know...if all blood is drained from an animal..there is no blood.
Pure animals. Pure hungry people. This is sick.

This right here is why I chose not to watch this year. Just think about it.
They have reached a new low this time with the fact that the only thing they are talking about is her dumb dress. No one cares about who won (which just showed how these moonmen don't mean anything anymore) , the only performance that seemed to be praised is Florence & the machine.

The explanation that was given about the dress is even dumber than the dress itself imo.
I just think the whole thing is lame. It seemed like she felt she didn't get enough press wearing that meat bikini thing so she had to do it once again.
Anyway I shouldn't even be commenting on it really because it doesn't deserve this much attention.

Totally agree with this!

I'm a vegan, but all of the people here complaining about this "dress", aren't griping about leather, silk, feather fill pillows/coats, alligator boots, cosmetics, dissection animals in schools, and many other products made from animals. What's the difference? There is none. You're just being selective just like PETA, who just want to save the "cute" animals. And this wasting food comments? What a joke. Restaurants, factories, schools, and stores throw out tons of food everyday.

MJ had a special clothing style throughout his life, but this just goes beyond. Loser.

+1, I agree with you a 100%.

She should start wearing armor. Right now, it's all about being as outrageous as possible with her. But at some point, the slings and arrows coming at her are going to hit and hurt. No matter how strong she may be, being in the public eye is difficult. She's going to get more backlash than she wants and it's going to be impossible for her to ignore it and not be affected. It's going to go beyond animal activist and start hurting her career. She won't be taken seriously and that's not what she wants. I hope she gets a grip soon and stops with the nonsense.

She made some excuse for wearing it; to bring attention to some cause that is in no way related to meat but all it was, was a sad cry-out for attention. She knew that wearing a dress made of real meat would make the headlines, and she's got exactly what she wanted. She seems to crave controversy, and it used to be interesting but now its not even remotely interesting or surprising. I was more shocked that she won 8 awards.

I like what Lady Gaga says her music and style represent but this is really unacceptable.

It is REAL meat.

It is like wearing a fur coat, just flaunting around a dead animal illustrating how ostentatious they really are.

Her explanation for it was just as bad (if we don't stand up for what believe all we'll have is the meat on our bones)
how so?
specific examples?
even if this is true how does it justify wearing any dead animal, especially to a high profile awards show

I suspect other reasons,
she should have just been honest and said, part of my act is to be provocative and by wearing dead animal meat it is sure to draw the attention to me and provoke a discussion.

Question: Does she want people to take her seriously?

I think wearing that dress was uncecessary... and not to mention unhygienic!
