Janet's Number One's World Tour Official Thread

Geeeez, you are right. My answer to you was really rude, really big shame on me. I am sorry :(

I'll take care this will not happen again, sorry :girl_sad:

NP, I was just trying to help, ya know ;)

It's not the skin show, she looks good in her other dresses, imo the catsuit isn't that flattering when it comes to her figure but whatever floats her boat.

:bugeyed I would give an arm or a leg to look like that in a cat suit. :cheeky:

^^ I'm sure many would, at her age especially :)

the NY times reviewed one of Janet's shows:

First-Person Reflections On a Pop Career
By BEN RATLIFF
Published: March 20, 2011

At a certain point in the middle of their lives it is good for pop stars to go away for a while — not just for a year, but even for 5 or 10. They come to understand what they’ve done in the world. They can frame it all better. The river of one’s work is over here, and the task of mapping it over there; generally you have to abandon one to attend to the other.

That’s not quite Janet Jackson’s story. For 15 years or so she has been looking over the contours of her career semi-regularly, so that the map and the river are one. She’s on tour now, promoting her second greatest-hits album, “Number Ones” — released in 2009 — and she played over the weekend at Radio City Music Hall. Friday’s show, the first of three, seemed just about the realest, most clear-minded retrospective she could do.

Not that Ms. Jackson has been away from music for long. In the past few years she’s gone deeper into the film business, as an actor and producer. But she was on the road as recently as the end of 2008 — her “Rock Witchu” tour, bedeviled by migraines and canceled dates — and headlined the Essence Music Festival last year in New Orleans. Nevertheless, Friday’s concert was unusually self-knowing, as if she’d returned from a long silence and felt ready to give the truly boiled-down version of her career.

No need now for Madison Square Garden; pyro, fantasy-circusy sequences; and narratives of revenge, healing or the freeing of the libido. This is the story of numbers, the real story.

The content of the “Number Ones: Up Close and Personal” tour is her No. 1 singles, in various markets. So: 35 cities, 30-some songs drawn from the 34 on “Number Ones” and a reasonable duration (a little under two hours). Much of the rest was fitting it all in via medleys and elisions, simple stage blocking, and costume changes.

The concert worked through five phases, not strictly chronological but drawn from the mood of the songs and the choreography of their videos. 1. Cold and domineering, with robot dancers. 2. Sentimental and courtly, in a pale purple dress. 3. Relaxed and athletic, in black street clothes. 4. Aggressive and dramatic. And then the encore, when she wore white and received love. (She included video clips and a slide show; she dedicates particular songs to each city, and on Friday New York got “The Best Things in Life Are Free,” her 1992 duet with Luther Vandross, and the 1989 “Rhythm Nation.”)

She worked hard and appeared not to be lip-syncing. The metallic-stretchy suit in Phase 1, creating the impression of longer legs, looked torturous; so did her furrowed brow. And the stylized choreography then and in Phase 4, with limbs making constructivist right angles and index fingers pointing to the ground, came adapted from music videos that are in some cases 25 years old. The worked-out motions feel necessary to her concerts, and she has never abandoned them.

Despite the anxiety involved in being a Jackson, she finds her greatest power when implying that her music is no big thing, just serene happiness. This was why Phase 3 felt like the strongest section by far. Ms. Jackson has cast a lot of baleful looks in her filmed life. But her well-rested smile remains the best of her natural attributes, way above her vaporous voice and her neutral body language. (Unlike most great stage performers Ms. Jackson has no music in her walk.)

Here, in black jeans and tank top, she sang “Doesn’t Really Matter,” “Escapade,” “Love Will Never Do (Without You),” “When I Think of You,” “All For You”: medium-cardio love songs, not so much ecstatic as tension free, and less tied to her brother Michael’s vocal mannerisms. All of that works for Ms. Jackson. It’s the closest she gets to representing life as lived rather than as performed.

I don't even understand that review.. Did they like the show or not? ( LOL...)

Its a bit confusing, but it sounds positive to me, saying there is no need for pyro's and all that, saying she worked hard and sung live, I can't see any negatives.

BET also just posted one:

On Friday night, legendary pop icon Janet Jackson hit New York's Radio City Music Hall for the first of three sold-out performances at the venue for her Number Ones: Up Close & Personal Tour. This is the diva's first time in the Big Apple since the Rock Witchu Tour in 2008.

The Rock Witchu Tour was plagued by several cancellations, skeptical critics and Jackson cutting the tour short due to illness. Having attended the Rock Witchu Tour, I was doubtful that Miss Janet could still deliver. Silly me—never doubt a Jackson.

Forty-four-year-old Janet is back. Focused less on massive productions and more on intimacy with her fans, the six-time Grammy winner brought the pop and soul to a diverse New York crowd and showed why she is an eternal icon. Inspired by her critically acclaimed performance as the headliner at the Essence Musical Festival last summer, Janet brought style, vocals, and her signature dancing. She flowed with confidence and commanded the stage, with not a step out of place. This is what you call a living legend.

In each venue, Janet dedicates select No. 1 hits to that particular city. For New York City, the videos to "Rhythm Nation" and "The Best Things in Life Are Free," her duet with the late, great Luther Vandross, played. This amped the audience for Jackson's arrival.

Almost magically, she appeared on stage in a space-age cat suit, which wowed audiences on last year's American Idol, and the slicked-back short cut that gives her a striking resemblance to Halle Berry. Janet opened with a fan favorite "The Pleasure Principle," a 1987 hit that was originally written for Prince.

Her fluidity, focus and precision were evident in every strut, point and vintage dance move. This was a different Janet than 2008, and the best I have seen her since The Velvet Rope Tour well over a decade ago.

The fans clearly appreciated her ferociousness as she went hits like “Control,” “What Have You Done For Me Lately?,” “Feedback,” "You Want This," and "Nasty." After over 30 minutes of aggressive performing, Janet went for a wardrobe change, and the audience got a taste of her acting career with clips from Good Times, Diff'rent Strokes and Poetic Justice. The hardcore fans dramatically shouted out the lines to the "No, mama, no!" monologue as Penny from Good Times.

Janet returned for a set of ballads, which included "Nothing," "Come Back to Me," "Let's Wait Awhile" and her Oscar-nominated song "Again." Janet is not known for explosive vocals, but she knows her voice well. In a venue like Radio City Musical Hall, which is known to feature some of the greatest vocalists of all time, Jackson finally had a chance to use her voice in a way I have never heard before. She had control and power. While some of the vocally challenged pop stars of today may have been inspired by Miss Jackson, Janet is not singing wildly off-key or lip-syncing for her life.

Miss Jackson was deeply grateful for the love New York gave her as she rocked other classics like her No. 1 R&B hit "I Get Lonely" (a song that got the most of love of the night), "If" and "Scream" (R.I.P. Michael Jackson). She ended with one of the best-selling singles of all time, "Together Again."

At one point, Janet declared, "They can't stop me, New York!" No one ever has. This is a woman who has survived the brutal entertainment industry with class, style and a humble spirit. Even when she has stumbled, Damita Jo has pulled herself up by her garter belts and proudly paved the way for so many artists after her. Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Beyoncé Knowles, Rihanna—you can see Janet Jackson in all of them. This is one tour not to miss, one where you can see a pop icon who has done it all, giving you her all.

Janet Jackson's North American leg of the Number Ones: Up Close and Personal Tour will run until the end of April. Click here for more information.

Before she took the stage Friday, March 4, Janet Jackson was presented a photo of her brothers as members of The Jackson 5 performing at RODEOHOUSTON in 1974. Janet's performance was 37 years after her brothers took the stage.

Oh wow and she looks beautiful :)

She sings Scream during her concerts? How does that go? I mean do they let Michael's part go to someone or they don't play it? I am wondering because it is a duet song. I heard she does pay tribute him during the show.

The tribute isn't good.. just some pics up on a screen.

Actually Usher and Celine Dion's tribute to Michael is better. Celine even announced that her Vegas show would include a tribute because of how much MJ meant to her.

For scream Michael sings some of first verse on the screen and then Janet does her first verse while clips of Michael in the video are show. For the tribute during together again she flashes pictures of them on the screen, it's obvious she is singing to him because she looks up to the sky and blows a kiss as the first picture appears and at times she gets choked up it's very sweet. This is not supposed to be a big tribute, other artist do a great job paying tribute by singing an MJ song or mimicking his dance moves but this tour isn't about that, it's about focusing on Janet as a solo artist and her hits. The tribute is minimal but it's very heartfelt and at the show i attended many in the audience got very emotional, it reminds people that Michael Jackson was just her brother not an entertainment icon she is paying tribute for.

You can see the the clips for yourself :)

If it were anything more than the few pictures on the screen I have no doubt in my mind that you would say she is using MJ for sales, plus Scream is still a tribute to MJ too.

I would think that her tribute would've been better than Celine's, Usher's or even Beyonce. Beyonce dedicated Halo to him which was beautiful. All three of their tributes were heartfelt and endearing. I didn't find Janet's 'tribute' to be heartfelt or endearing. I actually think she should've left it out altogether considering her past statements. Doing a tribute to a brother who you threw under the bus is very insincere in my opinion.

At least Beyonce, Celine and Usher had respect for MJ and didn't say an unkind word about him. It made their tributes all the more sincere.

Good to know the audience felt some emotion

StacyJ, why do you keep posting here if you hate Janet so much? All you do is bash her, and make sarcastic remarks about the comments on her concerts. Seriously, some of us happen to like Janet as an artist, as a person, and we are excited about her shows. I don't understand why you're making such a big deal out of a 'tribute'.....like Janet owes you a tribute to MJ or something.

She did a speech at the BET awards right after he passed, she appeared at the Nokia theatre after the memorial, she did a tribute performance at the MTV awards, she dedicated her book to him, and she is dedicating Together Again to him during her concerts. How much more do you want????

It's not the skin show, she looks good in her other dresses, imo the catsuit isn't that flattering when it comes to her figure but whatever floats her boat.

I have to agree with this. It doesn't look good, but above all it just looks painful. Like every cell of her is suffocating. I think Janet is beautiful, but generally lacks in the style department and this catsuit just is not nice to look at at all. But of course this isn't majorly important. I would still like to see the show if she performs in my country, no matter what she wears. Although the fur endorsement is bugging me.

Well said, the people that say Janet's tribute don't feel heartfelt, need to look at pictures of her VMA performance, and BET speech, it doesn't take a genius to see the pain in her eyes, like it or not Janet's tribute was the most heartfelt one. Just because she didn't do a ballad doesn't make it any less heartfelt.

Anyway, the demand for Janet to do more shows in Chicago has apparently caught Janet's attention and she is according to the rumor planning some more, maybe for a second leg of the concert. With all these several shows in one city she should have just done arenas.

To me Janet is special and more positive because she doesn't talk as much as some others in this family.

I also likes she turns back to her business cuz that will be good for her own healing.
She has a job to do and she is doing it brilliantly to me, this tour and her appearances do prove that to me. I do love to follow this thread.

However I do hope she and the family will urge for justice for Michael, for the whole truth to come out.

If she choses not to however that is her decision and I'll try to respect that taking into consideration she might has reasons which I do not know and/or can understand... however at the end of the day it is totally her and real private decision/business.
If one of my brothers would die I'd have no desire to talk in public also and yeah as much as Michael was a public figure, he was a brother also.

MTV review Janet's NYC show:

Janet Jackson Thrills Fans With Greatest Hits, Michael Tribute At Radio City
Singer covered songs ranging from classic 'Pleasure Principle' to 2008's 'Feedback' at New York show.

NEW YORK ? Often imitated, never duplicated, Janet Jackson's outbursts of meticulous choreography, sassy exclamations and smoldering gazes into the audience kept them on their feet for the entire two-hour set of her greatest hits at Radio City Music Hall. Monday night marked the last of three sold-out shows at the historic venue on her monumental Number Ones: Up Close and Personal Tour.

Up-and-coming boy band Mindless Behavior opened the show with songs including "#1 Girl," "Future" and their debut single, "My Girl." With their Usher-esque dance moves and shouts like "Where the ladies at?" the boys brought the tween girls out of hiding, judging by the shrill screams escaping various corner of the music hall.

At 9:00 sharp, the lights went down and Janet's fans were on the edge of their seats, watching music videos for "The Best Things in Life Are Free" and "Rhythm Nation" projected on big screens across the venue. A small shadow drifted toward center stage, and when the colorful lights came up, Jackson, wrapped in a shoulder-padded catsuit, complete with slick short hair, blasted into "The Pleasure Principle," dancing as hard and intensely choreographed as she did when the song first came out in the 1980s.

With barely a spare second between songs, Janet dazzled her way through her biggest hits, including "Miss You Much," "All for You" and "Nasty," and more recent hits like 2008's "Feedback."

Videos displayed during Jackson's costume changes included vintage clips from "Diff'rent Strokes," a funny scene from "Poetic Justice" where Jackson slyly rejects the advances of Tupac Shakur's character, and a rather heavy scene, as Jackson's character in "Why Did I Get Married" destroys her husband's house with a golf club, screaming hysterically.

Considering the tough couple of years the Jackson family has faced, the dark moments in the video seemed fitting, and everyone was beside themselves with bittersweet joy when Michael Jackson's face popped up on the big screen and she performed their hit single "Scream."

Janet emerged for her encore in a tight white one-piece disco suit, and performed "Diamonds," "Make Me" and "Together Again," which appeared to be the biggest hit of the evening. As Jackson graciously bowed out, her straight face transitioned into a smirk, suggesting that despite the hard times she has experienced recently, we can expect to see this singing and dancing pop legend shine far into the future.

"Its amazing!" Janet fan Elena Mercantini gleamed afterward. "It's like she's still 20 years old!"

"She's hot, she's amazing and she's still got it after all these years" added Alison Klinger of Long Island. "Best concert I've ever been to!"

No, I think she was very smart to do the smaller venues to get going again. She was able to charge higher prices and yet put on a smaller scale show, NOT smaller performance, but production scale, greatly reducing production costs. Her staging for these shows were not elaborate and it really gave her a chance to just shine as Janet.
