How would you promote Invincible?

At the time actually I downloaded You Rock My World before it was released on Napster. But I don't think Napster is the reason Invincible lagged a bit. I mean, you can't always be at your peak? I was in high school at the time, and it really wasn't cool to listen to Michael Jackson. Most saw him as a weirdo. The guys listened to Linkin Park and Jay-Z and stuff. The girls listened more to Christina Aguilera and Britney. If you liked Michael Jackson you had to keep it quiet. The 2000s were not a good era for Michael, especially after 2003. It was only after his death in 2009 that he became hip again.
The album leaked weeks before the official release date. Most albums at this time were leaking a month in advance. Watch the documentary Eminem produced about Napster. The CD manufacturing plants workers were leaking the albums to bootleg groups. It definitely effected sales.

Interesting, so was I. Were you at the MJNI listening party?
No. Does that matter?

go and yell in peoples' faces and force them to listen to it and love it with all their hearts
This is what I don't understand. It really frustrates me that MJ fans refuse to accept that people have different tastes.

People did hear Invincible, they just didn't like it. That's it. The quicker people can learn to deal with that, the quicker everybody can get on with their lives. It really doesn't matter that other people don't like your favourite album. Stop taking it as a personal insult.

Hot take: The more time goes on, the more I think the tracklist itself is fine as it is. There are some amazing songs on this album. Sure, there's filler, but that was the case for every album post BAD - though some of the songs ARE draggy. I'm starting to like this album for what it is as opposed to disliking it for what it isn't. I have a Spotify playlist with just the bangers one after the other, and it is a brilliant listen!

This album has been massively overhated and I am only just starting to realise it. I truly think that, with better promotion and a tour, this record would be looked back on a LOT more fondly. This record's high points are right up there with some of Michael's best work.

I'm really glad I've been able to come around to Invincible, I was missing out!

sooo I said that as a joke. I didn't mean it for real. sorry for the confusion 😅 it's totally fine and normal for fans to have different tastes in M's music. I said it as a joke, sorry!

To be honest, I couldn't tell if it was sarcasm or not, although I did suspect it.

But it doesn't matter - my reply doesn't need to be aimed at you. The point still stands.

This is a great question so I've given it some thought. Apologies about the long post.

I'd have done what Mike planned to for his TII era album, releases 3 maybe 4 singles over the course of a year and then add 7 or 8 tracks and release the album in time for Christmas.

I'd have gone for,
Whatever Happens late 2000,
Break Of Dawn March 2001
You Rock My World June 2001
Xscape September 2001
Butterflies late November 2001
Album release late November 2001

I'd have started with WH, to capitalise on Santana's popularity around 99-00 and because it's a mature sound for Mike. The same with Break Of Dawn, it's something the general public wouldn't have expected from Michael. Then release YRMW, typical Mike sound to bring in the summer. Xscape to round out the hype for the album, it sounds like Mike but feels fresh and modern. Then Butterflies in time for the release of the album to show of Mike's vocal ability and the diversity of the music on the album

Release short films with each of the singles and then maybe have a documentary on the making of the album a couple of weeks before Christmas.

The criteria for the thread was you can't change the tracklisting. That's a good set of ideas though.

You think there is filler on Dangerous/History? I love every single song.

My bad I skimmed over that part. I'd keep the same plan but swap Unbreakable for Xscape, the explanation still applies.
When you put it like that then I agree near wholeheartedly. :)

In fact that's what I'd do, except in slightly different orders and with one duet collaboration version of one of the songs with a pop star.
