How come people don't talk about Janet Jackson...

The way they do Michael, Madonna, or Prince? I mean they all BLEW UP around the same time. In other words, you know how when ever there's a general music special on tv where all these great artist from the past, and present are being talked about and their accomplishments, influence, artistry, innovation, ect are being talked up, I notice that people almost never talk about or even mention JJ. I know she get's respect for longevity and I know she's been named by the ciara's and rihanna's of the music world as one of many major influences... but is that all. How come people (music experts, rock historians, industry insiders, other artist and the like) don't hype her up like they do others???

Do you want opinions or cold hard facts?
In my opinion - because she's nothing special.
She's a beautiful woman, very sweet-natured, but definitely not "up there" with Michael. JMO
 
I'm going to move this to 2300 Jackson Street.
 
she has her place in music history.however she had limited vocal talent ans she worked with the then hottest producers in the game jam and lewis, but she wasn't seen as a ground breaking act. she has her place though, however as much as i dig control and rhythm nation plus some of her other hits and tours she wasn't that kind of talent imo.

she worked extra hard to get that good.

Nothing special or extraordinary.

I'm not a hater.

I would like to see Janet being successful again.

The problem is that she has been replaced by younger singers.

The fact that she betrayed her brother on TV did not help too. Many Michael's fans - like me - do not support Janet.
 
I used to like Janet's music at some point...but then it started to seem like it was all the same. Many of her songs sound very similar to one another and there's just that "special something" missing. There's no magic, I guess. ;)
She has a beautiful voice, yet I wouldn't call her a strong vocalist. Well, Madonna isn't either (imo), but she has found other ways to make herself big :smilerolleyes:

I think Janet is gorgeous and i love her music. :p Been listening to it a lot recently as a matter of fact. Too bad there's a bold division amongst fans in regards to her. I think shes great.
 
I wish she would go back to singing good music . This music on sex is boring. And i think she always throws Michael under the bus. I never see her support but after listening to the bodyguard say they never take her serious "shes little janet" i now know why. And she falls in love to fast for me.
 
Janet deserves more credit than she gets, but the fact remains that she is just not on the level of Madonna, Prince and Michael in terms overall impact, success and fame. Well Prince's record sales aren't nearly as much as MJ's and Madonna's, but his impact has been huge.Janet has accomplished so much and has been influential, but she's just not quite up there with the "greats" like MJ, Prince,etc. They're just bigger icons.
 
I love Janet..but her music as of recent is not as great as her older stuff (Control-All For You)..I just wish that she would get back to making GREAT music again..and she needs to start SINGING instead of whispering on every track..She needs to put more emotion in her voice like she did back in the day..Compared to Madonna, I think Janet is WAY more talented..I believe that if she starts making music like she used to make, then she can get her career back again..
 
janets always ahad to cope with living in mjs shadow especially outside of the usa. so i guess she gets,not forgotten about but theres always mj there. and outside of the USA shes always stuggled to an extent so isnt seen as been on the same level as madonna etc
 
because she isn't on the same level simple and true. Anyone who thinks else wise is not facing reality.

as an artist,I agree with most of the comments,she has done anything that can be considered a masterpiece or a milestone in music history,she's fine,she had her moment.
 
It isn't so much about talent, I think. Janet sure has more talent than Madonna for instance. It just that she doesn't captivate the audience like 'the greats' have done. She was a funky, later sexy young woman with some nice tunes and dancable tracks, but nothing about her as a performer, singer, nor her personality really stands out. Madonna, Prince and Michael all intrigue for diffrent reasons. Janet is just fun, a nice person, a fine singer, but intruiging - not really.
 
As a female singer, she gets overshadowed by Madonna.

As the sister of Michael Jackson, she gets overshadowed by his accomplishments.

I think Janet deserves more recognition from the critics but who cares about them anyway? We can clearly see Jan's influence on the younger generation but her impact is just not as memorable as Mike and Madge.

Also, I like Prince but surely Ms. Jackson is more famous than him back in the day? I mean, I knew Janet before I even knew about Prince. I only found out about Prince because of MJ.

I suppose Janet is not the groundbreaker that Michael and Prince are. Her music isn't that astounding. That doesn't mean I'm not a fan because I am.
Her latest efforts too haven't been that well received.
 
I don't like it when people say Janet has a 'limited vocal range' the notes she hits in Rhythm Nation and other songs are stronger and others quieter. Compared to other artists she has a very good range, I hate how to be considered a good female artist scream to be considered a good female artist :lol: She has one of the most beautiful soft voices I have ever heard and people saying she is nothing special is just crual, she can sing, she can dance, she can write songs, she can act and at 43 she is beautiful what more do you want !
I don't have a clue why she doesn't get the respect she deserves and I hope one day she does, I would hate for people to "Don't Know What they Got Til' Its Gone"

Come on fluffy_oz and ExoticPricess she has achieved so much, she is the 7th best selling female artist, someone whos talentless can't achieve what she has.
The problem is IMO she doesn't have a good team, they don't publisize her songs and she never gets airtime. she is much better than artists like beyonce and even madonna, she has the full package and its time people started appreciating it !!

raz2911, you can have your opinion and thats cool, it just that compared to the artist mention in the first post Janet was never that ICONIC to me. She was always just MJ's sister to me who I gave a listen to back in the late 80's and 90's but who lost me with all the sexually charged image and the public has reacted to that in recent years. I did'nt get it with Madonna and I did'nt get it with Janet, its like is that ALL you have to offer? When all is said and done how much longer can that be the basis of her 'art?' at some point even Madonna had to lay off that image.

MJ was just EXTRAORDINARY to me, hence the high esteem held for him by so many around the world:wub:
