When was this? I never read any article where MJ stated that Brooke was his girlfriend. Mike said in Ebony back in 1984 that he and Brooke were simply friends and that he wanted people to know that they were not a couple. I gotta find that article.
Michael said in his autobiography Moonwalk that he dated (as in girlfriend) Brooke Shields. He said the first woman he loved and had a crush on was (though never dated) Diana Ross, then his first romance was Tatum O'Neal and then Brooke Shields. He also told Oprah in his 1993 interview when asked if he had a girlfriend, and he said "Right now it's Brooke Shields".
Michael would have said he wasn't dating Brooke Sheilds on 1984, because Michael saw it as losing female fan base if they knew he had a girlfriend just as John Lennon used to deny he was married when The Beatles first became famous. It could also have seen as going against his African American female fan base if he had said he was dating Brooke Shields, as interracial dating was as common as it is now (though it's still seen as slightly controversal in the USA). Remember, MJ's PR team denide he had married Lisa Marie Presely when the news first broke, and Beyonce and Jay Z have never confirmed offically confirmed they were dating. So Michael's 1984 Ebony interview would giving misinformation so he could keep his romance private.
From the 1950's to the 1980's when a star became huge having a wife of girlfriend could work against your image as young and ideally free, single and available to girls who had a crush on their pop idol. This is one of the reasons all Michael's brothers ran away and got married without their parents knowing, because Joesph thought having his sons get married with harm the image of the Jackson 5. Aswell as being on an outdated style of television show, Donny Osmonds career also ended in the late 1970's because he got married. PR was a completely different game now, as a pop star has to have a girlfriend to show there pulling power.
I guess this topic is for another thread.
