I sometimes use present tense, and then have to correct myself and use past tense.

Im sorry, but I feel stupid using present tense. Sometimes I dont even notice though.

Yeah, most people are not going to understand us using the present tense. I kinda flip back and forth myself.

I think it's a personal preference really? Some have reasons to keep using present tense and some have reasons to use past tense. It's just an individual thing based on how you feel about it.
I use past tense because although he is here in spirit and always will be he has still passed.
