Cirque du Soleil'sMichael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour

Michael Jackson One

In advance of our “Michael Jackson One” by Cirque du Soleil report and photo gallery to be posted this afternoon from this morning’s official sneak peek, I can tell you that the 26 scenes with 60 performers includes 70 percent of the late King of Pop’s No.1 hits — all full length.

The Mandalay Bay sound system will allow the front-stage speakers to play Michael’s lead vocals, while the headset speakers at each seat will have his background vocals. I’m told that it will be as if the audience was in the recording studio with Michael, as it is the raw audio of the master recordings just as the engineers heard it.

Again, there is no one performer playing Michael onstage, but video and audio footage of the singer envelops the plot of four unexpected characters who each portray Michael’s storytelling personality of courage, love, playfulness and agility. It is a character-driven story, and Creative Director Welby Altidor and writer and show Director Jamie King say, “We build his presence through his voice and feel his shadow as he becomes more and more present through the show. Then the apex, the moment where we’ll really feel that, he’s there, and he’s still with us.”

Music Director Kevin Antunes was given full access to Michael’s library of masters with permission of his estate’s lawyers. I’m told by top Cirque officials that “Michael Jackson One,” Cirque’s eighth resident show on the Strip, is the company’s most ambitious endeavor to date, and no show has ever had so many acrobatic performers in a single production. Dance crews come from as far away as New Zealand, South Korea and Puerto Rico.

Travis Payne is the choreographer, and Zaldy Goco, who has worked with Michael, Lady Gaga and Gwen Stefani, dresses the performers. I interviewed Zaldy and Jamie when they kicked off “Michael Jackson — The Immortal World Tour” arena touring show in Montreal in October 2011 — it is still on tour and continuing to break attendance records weekly worldwide. It plays Japan this month, then Korea, Australia and, in August, China.

Jamie summed up his new show: “It’s One because that was Michael’s message, but also because he became No. 1, his hits became No. 1, and he was the world’s No. 1 star. But right to the end, he said we are all just One because we are all the same. I want people to leave with that One-ness.”

We see the new Mandalay Bay Theater for the first time this morning, but we already know the double doors will be black and gold designed as Michael’s signature military jackets. There are six floor-to-ceiling portraits of Michael in his moonwalk look — a sequined jacket, a black hat and white socks. I’m told that jewels will cover the lobby bathed in sapphire blue.

Previews of “Michael Jackson One” start at Mandalay Bay on May 23, with the official world premiere June 21. Check back to Vegas DeLuxe later for our first photos of the sneak preview and additional comments from Jamie.

Michael Jackson show in Vegas more of a good thing

By HANNAH DREIER | Associated Press – 8 mins ago

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Michael Jackson spent his life breaking music industry records. Four years after his death, the pop star's estate has delivered another first: Jackson is now the only person, place or thing to have inspired two Cirque du Soleil shows.
The Montreal-based acrobatic-theater company presented a sneak peak of its new Jackson tribute show, "One," at the Mandalay Bay hotel-casino in Las Vegas on Tuesday.
The show shares many features with "Immortal," another Cirque production that capitalizes on the enduring public fascination with the King of Pop.
In both, performers dance, somersault and glide above the crowd in dramatic riffs on Jackson's number one hits.
But unlike "Immortal," which is a touring show, "One" will have a permanent home in Vegas when it opens June 29. "Immortal" is scored by a live band, whereas "One" will feature original recordings.
Creative director Welby Altidor said he tried to channel Jackson's famous knack for pushing boundaries.
"If Michael was an acrobat, how would he fly? How would he do the things Cirque du Soleil does?" he asked.
The 20-minute preview Tuesday looked like Cirque's typical display of elaborately costumed, often airborne, attention deficit theater.
Each scene featured at least five separate points of action at any given time, with actors taking advantage of the full three-dimensionality of the space — flying over the crowd, climbing ropes to the ceiling, and dancing off to the wings in ramps.
The show is not biographical, and no one directly portrays Jackson. Instead, it presents emotional, if fairly literal, takes on the pop star's hits.
During the act set to "Stranger in Moscow," a huddled figure wanders in the snow. Performers don bejeweled prison stripes for "Smooth Criminal." And for "Bad," they do tightrope tricks amid a scene of urban decay.
The show does portray a general sense of Jackson-ness.
Paparazzi-like monsters with flashing headgear torment four main characters. Dancers appear in white fedoras and white jackets over shimmering bikinis. They moonwalked and leaned to precariously acute angles.
Pictures and stock footage of Jackson also drift on and off a giant LED screen that serves as the show's backdrop.
The Jackson estate is co-producer of both Cirque shows. In addition to sharing in revenue from the box office and merchandizing, the estate earns royalties on the music used in the productions.
While some fans might be leery of what appears to be another money grab, "One" is likely to fit right in on the Strip, which has also hosted Beatles and Elvis-themed Cirque shows.
As acrobats tumbled and bounced in Las Vegas, the spirit of the late performer was also hovering over an entirely different production a few hundred miles away. A wrongful death trial is currently playing out in a Los Angeles court between Michael Jackson's mother and concert giant AEG Live.
Altidor acknowledged that the trial has put the singer's name back in the headlines, but he hopes no one will be thinking of the tabloid side of Jackson's life when they come to the Mandalay Bay theater.
"We're really focusing on the positive; all the things he brought to the world," he said. "That's what we want to celebrate."

With full access from John Branca and the Michael Jackson Estate to the musician’s library of master recordings, musical director Kevin Antunes made sure to showcase the intricate layers that often get lost in a song’s final cut. For example, the theater's front speakers play Jackson’s lead vocals, while the headrest's speakers in each seat swoon with his background vocals, giving attendees the experience of being in the recording studio with Jackson himself.

"You're not listening to a CD or an MP3, you're listening to the raw audio of these master recordings in their full complete embodiment – you're hearing it in a way that only Michael and his engineers had heard it when they had done [it]," says Antunes, who has also overseen the music for Justin Timberlake, Rihanna and Madonna, including her Super Bowl halftime gig. "What is true mastery is when you listen to his background vocals while his lead vocal is singing. If he was in the studio and he had his headphones on and he's recording layer after layer of background vocals, it's the things that he's doing while he's listening to his lead on his background track: he's snapping, and he might ghost some of the lyrics, he could whisper some of the lyrics. Hearing that stuff, that's the kind of stuff that I'd want the fans to get a chance to hear, and I contour some of the arrangements so that some of those things can be highlighted, because it gives you a true look into the artistry of this incredible entertainer. And nobody gets to really hear that except in this theater."

Sounds like a good opportunity for a 5.1 mix on a DVD or Blu-Ray.

Wow! Cirque du Soleil officials have said that its new show “Michael Jackson One” is its most ambitious entertainment endeavor to date. (That also probably means one of the most expensive, if not the No. 1, too.) It packs a bigger, more powerful knockout punch than anything Muhammad Ali ever threw.

Looking at four scenes in this morning’s sneak preview, they proved it, and I’m already going on record predicting that it will be Cirque’s biggest all-time winner. It’s dancing and acrobatics the likes that have never been seen. It’s visually stunning, electrifying and explosive, with sensational sound. This morning’s mini showcase came without finished video and lighting effects, yet was still spellbinding and beautifully breathtaking.

All very much a proper theatrical production that’s certainly different from the other seven Cirque shows already on the Strip. Previews start May 23 at Mandalay Bay, with its world premiere June 29. Thanks to contributing photographer Tom Donoghue for his photo gallery from the excerpts presented of “Tabloid Junkie,” “Stranger in Moscow,” “Bad” and “Smooth Criminal” and to Cirque for this first video posted on YouTube.

Our sneak preview began with red-caped paparazzi in the audience with cameras, flashbulbs and boom mics to remind us how Michael was constantly stalked by in-your-face paparazzi. Then four curious characters were magically whooshed up — balanced onstage on steam smoke — to provide the story thread.

Michael Jackson One - from YouTube.com

(I was reminded how director Jamie King pulled off a similar coup back in Montreal when he introduced the four fans on exploding water bursts from fire hydrants for his touring show “Michael Jackson — The Immortal World Tour.” This time the characters are the mime, the heroes and the talismen tour guides who have magical Michael powers.)

Jamie has written and directed a totally different show this time around. Everything from makeup designs by Nathalie Gagne, costumes by Zaldy Goco, choreography by Travis Payne, Parris Goebel Rich and Tone Talauega to acrobatic performances designed by Rob Bollinger and Germain Guillemot are all totally unique and incredible. All in fact wonderfully overpowering.

Credit also to sound designer Jonathan Deans, who ensures that the audience hears Michael from the front-of-the-stage speakers and the multi-overlaid background tracks in the speakers embedded in each seat. The genius of Kevin Antunes as musical director shines though audibly with his unrestricted access to Michael’s original studio recordings.

As I reported this morning, 70 percent of the late King of Pop’s No.1 hits are played at full length for the 26 scenes with 63 dancers and performers in the cast. If the South Korean crew doesn’t dazzle you, you’ll be incredulous with the tight-wire artists dancing with their full bodies and feet on the tiniest of thin tape.

'Michael Jackson One' Sneak Peek at Mandalay Bay

Jamie promised me many months ago that his show would envelop the audience, and it does with dancers leaping from the theater aisles onto the stage and performers swinging through the air on zip lines and flying thrones. They’re above you and surround you wherever you are in the theater. The room has been subtly transformed into a blue shimmering jewel from its former “The Lion King” and “Mamma Mia!” days. The entranceway has black-and-gold doors and 6-foot portraits from the Moonwalk sequence.

Cirque calls it a sonic tonic, a fusion of acrobatics, dance and visuals that take the audience on an immersive journey through the music and spirit of Michael. They deliver on the promise of his powerful, multi-layered music being heard like never before in a riveting, state-of-the-art surround-sound environment. The series of four seamless visual musical tableaux we witnessed today teases what’s to come in a Michael world of the magical, playful, majestic and heart-warming.
Jamie and Welby told us that they’re closing in on the end of production. “We’re about at the 60 percent stage. We are now digging deep into the adding of the lighting effects and the video visuals,” explained Welby. Their aerial performances, driving acrobatics and vivid choreography using urban hip-hop is a tribute to the legacy of Michael — the genius, the visionary, The One.

I’ll have our full one-on-one interviews with Jamie, Welby, Mandalay Bay President Chuck Bowling and John Branca, the lawyer of the Michael Jackson Estate, on Wednesday, but a quick sound bite for now:

John told me: “We are thrilled — it’s the ultimate theatrical tribute to Michael Jackson. It’s maximum power and couldn’t be done bigger or better. I can’t wait for you to see the entire show — there’s some incredible surprises we’re keeping until curtain up. I know Michael would be thrilled.

“The show captures Michael in vocals, the dance and the message. You can feel him here. Berry Gordy described Michael as the greatest entertainer who ever lived, and the show captures that. This is Michael and Cirque 4D with steroids to boot!”

Welby added: “We set out to ensure that he would be honored by it, that he would be inspired it. We have elements in this show that are completely different to anything that’s out there with other Cirque shows. It is signature, unique Michael Jackson with the fusion that makes it stand out from anything else.

“We wanted to give a more intimate experience of Michael’s music, and we do that with the music. We bring out all the hidden gems from his recordings to really feel his presence.”

Chuck continued: “It is new artistry not seen on the Strip previously or anywhere in the world. Today was making sure you saw all the differences of the show from anything else. It’s not coming to see a show; it’s experiencing a show. You take away the feeling of Michael Jackson. The theater provides an immersion into Michael’s world for the audience from the front row to the back. It has all that’s needed to be the No. 1 show in Las Vegas and thus the world.”

Jamie summed up: “We have done it the way Michael would have wanted: new, fresh and entertaining. He would have wanted this balance of rock and roll and fantasy. Michael always said, ‘Go farther, make it bigger, and create things people have never seen before.’ We have done that in an ambitious way. This reminds us that Michael was a great entertainer, a great humanitarian, and it’s a journey only he could take us on.”

Oh My Goodness!!!! I am getting really excited here. Who would expect to experience something like this in a show. Imagine Michael whispering some lyrics in your ear!! Thank you estate and Cirque. I hope this makes more & more people want to go and see it.

Oh those photos are great & the costumes are out of this world!

Cirque du Soleil prides itself on making each new show bigger and badder than the last. And for this second combination of the spectacle of Cirque du Soleil with the musical genius of Michael Jackson, this one is bad all right (which of course means that it's really really badass). The first show, the top-grossing Michael Jackson – The Immortal World Tour is currently touring Europe. In Las Vegas, four new acts of Michael Jackson ONEwere previewed to the media as a sneak peek of the new King of Pop-driven show at Mandalay Bay.
Michael Jackson ONE writer and director Jamie King and director of creation Welby Altidor spoke briefly to the show's first "real" audience about their excitement leading up to the show, before preview performances begin May 23. King and Altidor chose four scenes they felt showcase the energy of the new show, which features more than 60 performers in a theater that has a sound system worthy of Jackson's iconic music.

SHOWS: See three more performances coming to Vegas

Where Cirque du Soleil would normally have clowns before the show, Michael Jackson ONE features black fedora and red trench coat-clad paparazzi roaming the aisles, getting in the faces of audience members. This is a nod to the struggle the star had with the media hounding him, and just one of the instances where art imitates Jackson's life. The paparazzi don't leave quietly – they make an appearance in Tabloid Junkie, an act that's an assault on the senses, and highlights some of the crazier rumors about Jackson, including buying the bones of the Elephant Man and sleeping in an oxygen tank.

Michael Jackson's trademark choreography fits seamlessly with classic Cirque du Soleil acrobatics. "With Cirque," says King, "I can express and experience his music in a new way. There are a lot of iconic moments that are put on with a Cirque twist." Indeed, a lot of the movement in the show, according to Altidor and King, was defined by asking "If Michael was an acrobat, how would he move?"

The ballad Stranger in Moscow showcases a beautiful and strong solitary rope acrobat personifying the theme of isolation. That song was written in response to allegations and pressures in Jackson's career.

VIDEO: Get your own sneak peek of a Vegas show

Smooth Criminal is a study in light and dark, and a testament to the innovative costume design by Zaldy Goco. The performers' seemingly black and white pinstripe suits glow neon dragons under black lights. In this choreography-heavy number, the dancers even nail the song's signature gravity-defying 45-degree lean.
And yes, there was a sneak peek of Bad itself, with a team of acrobats bouncing on lines of thin tape as if they were trampolines. But this is also where we get our first Moonwalk, courtesy of a couple of magical shoes that float from the sky and bust out the classic move as soon as they hit the stage.

Michael Jackson ONE is already full of magic, music and love, three things that defined its namesake. Prepare to be dazzled when the show officially opens June 29. For ticket information

Today, Cirque du Soleil and the Estate of Michael Jackson invited a select few to a sneak peek at a performance of Michael Jackson ONE. This first look at Cirque du Soleil’s newest Las Vegas show at Mandalay Bay started with a discussion panel with the creative team and introduced the performance. The preview included four acts of the show which made corporal the music and spirit of Michael Jackson.

It’s unlike any other show in the world. Even Cirque du Soleil’s Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL World Tour, you can’t compare. It’s a brand new show with a theater at Mandalay Bay specifically built for Michael Jackson ONE, so it’s been engineered to have the audience completely immersed in the world of Michael Jackson seamlessly. Join the adventure of four characters that personify MJ’s courage, love, playfulness, and agility with unbelievable Cirque du Soleil acrobatics that takes the theatrical experience to a new level.

“Cirque du Soleil tends to push the envelope on what human physic can do. Michael Jackson tends to push the envelope on what music and dance can do. The two energies together create one unique situation.” Said Rich Ralauega, Choreographer for Michael Jackson ONE. The creative team has also brought the dedication Michael Jackson had to his craft to the show. Jamie King, Writer and Director of MJ ONE, remembers working with Michael Jackson as a dancer on his Dangerous World Tour in 1992 and what resonated with him the most during the rehearsals with the King of Pop was MJ’s attention to detail, his artistry, and his strive for perfection, all in efforts so that the audience could feel that devotion on the stage. And that’s the production team’s intention; they want the Las Vegas audience to feel the spirit of Michael Jackson come alive on stage in one theatrical production filled with timeless music, incredible signature dance choreography, and innovative athleticism.
