Hot topic Brad Sundberg Seminars: Making Music With Michael Jackson

Re: Brad Sundberg seminars: Making Music With Michael Jackson

Lets not forget this seminar is an all day event ..A full 6 hours with a meal served. There are also not 50 thousand people attending where Brad Buxer can afford to give cheap tickets, that would not even cover the expenses. The seminar is well worth the price to those who want an intimate experience listening and learning about Michael in the studio. If that is not your cup of tea fine. There are plenty of rave reviews from fans who have attended this event saying it was well worth the ticket price and they would even go again, that should speak about its worth and value. Someone that hasn't attended can't speak on its worth.

In Stockholm the price was $169 for 5 hours, no meal included. But it´s dragged out for 7 hours and he could have kept going the whole night, :) he promised to come back and finish what he missed to cover.

Re: Brad Sundberg seminars: Making Music With Michael Jackson

is there any plans that he has to bring the seminar to england? i would love to see & hear unseen/unheard Michael Jackson studio material... hope this footage is released in the future.

There are plans for a seminar in London later this year.

Re: Brad Sundberg seminars: Making Music With Michael Jackson

I think something like this shows a lot respect to Michael as an artist and a person. People get to see and hear stories of his work process and learn about him. What he did meant something not just to fans but obviously to the people who did work with him. It's nice to see.

1994. New York City, West 54th Street. This was the room.

Hit Factory Studio 1, on the sixth floor.

We made music in this room. The giant orchestra (NY Philharminic) on "Earth Song" and "Childhood". Yep, in this room.

The Andre Crouch Choir chants on "They Don't Really Care About Us". Same room.

The footsteps and sound effects leading into the song "Little Susie". Yep, same room.

David Foster was here working out parts with Michael. So was Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. And Janet.

We decorated it for Christmas once, with trees, fake snow, a sleigh, a bridge, lights everywhere - just to give a vibe for a song we were working on.

Brad Buxer would sit at the piano and work on arrangements with Michael. We threw water balloons at the paparazzi from the windows, just for fun.

All in this room.

Hit Factory had this huge freight elevator that you could drive a full-sized van into, and you could either park underground in a huge garage (rare in Midtown), or... just for fun we would take the van up the sixth floor and Michael could get out of the van and be in the studio... with just a few steps. We didn't do it very often, but it was pretty cool that you could.

We moved into Hit Factory in January of 1994, and most of the crew stayed there all year. Bruce and I stayed until about March of '95, finishing mixes, editing, checking test-pressings, etc. Most of the team was working on the first floor (Studios 3 and 4), which was where Michael's private lounge was set up. Studio 1, up on the sixth floor, became my office for much of the project. Not a bad place to work.

From time to time we would give up Studio 1 for Billy Joel or Mariah Carey, but it was always nice to have it back when they were done. When we settled into a studio, it was for the long haul.

HIStory was an amazing project, and one that I will be giving more focus to in my seminars this year. It isn't often mentioned when people name their favorite MJ albums (at least not in the top 2 or 3), but there is some incredible music packed into it.

The Hit Factory is sadly gone, or at least from what it was. Now, it is called "The Hit Factory Condos". Wealthy celebrities and hard-working New Yorkers now live there. I can't really blame them... you could feel the history, the music in those walls. But it will never again be what it once was.

Can I tell you a really short story? When Eddie Germano first opened the original Hit Factory (just a couple blocks up the street from this one), back in 1975, his first client (this is crazy!!) was Stevie Wonder. Stevie booked the room for three days, but stayed nine months. Stevie barely ate or slept... he just kept pounding out music. The result? "Songs In The Key Of Life."

>>In case you glossed over that - that was the first project ever recorded at Hit Factory!

Oct 6, 1991

Neverland Valley Ranch, Santa Ynez, CA

No... I wasn't there... on that particular that day.

It all started with a phone call from Michael maybe two weeks earlier. I don't remember the exact words, but he was talking about Elizabeth getting married, and a new gazebo at the ranch, and music... there had to be lots of music. I started thinking to myself, "Hmmm... I love a good wedding... lots of food, nice wine, maybe a killer DJ, and there's bound to be some serious cake... what to wear, what to wear, what to wear???"

I refocused on the conversation, after all it was Michael Jackson on the phone. He was still talking about speakers... he wanting more and more speakers... and this gazebo... I didn't know anything about gazebos.

Suddenly the picture became clear... I was not being invited to the wedding, I just had to install a music system in and around this new gazebo being built near the main house. By now I had installed and estimated 200+ rock speakers all over Neverland. Rock speakers are those speakers that are shaped like rocks, but... they have speakers in them - hence the clever name. We had rock speakers around the lake, around the train stations, the main house, the guest houses, the giant flower clock, the amusement park, the petting zoo, the large zoo, the inground trampoline... rocks everywhere! A few more rocks around this new gazebo should be easy enough.

Now, here's thing with working with Michael - zero advance notice. We would literally be finishing a project at the ranch, maybe barely testing it, and here he would come in his Batman golf cart, holding onto his hat so it wouldn't blow off, to come see our work. Well, the wedding was no exception.

For my readers under the age of, oh... 40, you likely don't know just how amazing and famous Elizabeth Taylor was. With all due respect to the many look-alike actresses of today, Elizabeth was in a class by herself. She was funny, charming, quick-witted and very intelligent. And beautiful. I worked for her for many years after the wedding, and we became very good friends. But back to my point, her fame was legendary, and this wedding was the talk of LA, if not the world.

So Michael calls and (to the best of my memory) gives me maybe 10-14 days notice to build this system. That may seem fine, and we did get it done, but that was one of perhaps dozens of projects going on all over the ranch. There were builders, electricians, designers, tent companies, artists and gardeners everywhere. We had to dig trenches, bury wires, install speakers, test and tune. But everything on the ranch had to be perfect. Every ride, every plant, every inch of concrete was washed and prepped for the big day.

I hinted about "being onsite" for the wedding, just to keep an eye (and ear) on everything. (I did mention my love of wedding receptions, right?) But I was assured everything would be fine without me. So much for my cake.

And it was fine. It was a circus, a media snowstorm, the cover of every magazine, tabloid and news story for days. I didn't get any reports of troublesome speakers, so I believe my contribution was deemed a success.

Larry and I also became friends, and I have more than a few stories to share about him... someday. I should get around to writing a book one of these days.

Rock speakers, giraffes, gazebos, chimps, tents, wedding cake, Michael, Elizabeth and Larry. It was a crazy time, with some amazing personalities.

Oh, and a month later we released an album called "Dangerous."

1991 was a funny year.

Hear things you have never heard.
See things you have never seen.
Learn things you never knew.

Aaw poor Brad. Shame on Michael for not realising there was one eager wedding fan working in his house :D

Re: Brad Sundberg seminars: Making Music With Michael Jackson

Well it wasn't Michael's wedding, he couldn't just invite random people to someone else's wedding. lol

Re: Brad Sundberg seminars: Making Music With Michael Jackson

Anyone going to upcoming seminars, be prepared not to hear as much music as you might want. The leak of the Streetwalker/Black or White demos violated the single rule Brad Sundberg had.

I don't think that will stop him from playing anything at all to be quite honest.

Re: Brad Sundberg seminars: Making Music With Michael Jackson

It won't stop him entirely, but it will probably make him more apprehensive.

Re: Brad Sundberg seminars: Making Music With Michael Jackson

Something was bound to leak sooner or later. And it's not nice to punish everyone for one person's deed.

Also the leaked demos are of such an awful quality they hardly have any real market value.

Re: Brad Sundberg seminars: Making Music With Michael Jackson

I've been reading these comments asking whether or not this is a cash grab, is it really worth the price, etc etc.

I did happen to attend the New York seminar last June. Months before the actual event the price was slated to be much higher than it ended up being ($179). At that time there was no way I would be going because the cost was too high. When it was lowered I still wrestled with myself about it. "Is this really going to be worth it?" I kept asking myself. I decided to buy a ticket and go. I was so glad that I did.

Guys, this is not a case of someone "trying to associate themselves" with Michael and make money off of it. Brad's a great guy and has a treasure trove of stories and footage to share with those who attend. I loved every moment of that afternoon, that stretched out to 5.5 hours, and I didn't even stay for the VIP dinner, so that should tell you something already. I believe that the NYC seminar was the first one he held, so I'm sure he's expanded a bit on his presentation and materials, not to mention he's been able to bring in people like Forger. I really did feel like it was worth going to.

From: In the studio with MJ FB

OK, I have some amazing news to share with you, but I need to set the stage, or rather... the table.

Let's time-travel back to around 1986, the Bad era. One of the first things I discovered when working with Bruce, Quincy, Rod and Michael was the importance of food. I know this is going to sound crazy, but stick with me. There will be plenty of time for music, I want to discuss food.

Back then Quincy had a personal chef by the name of Jean-Luke. (Say it in a very French accent, with a soft, shushing "J"). Jean-Luke would occasionally bring in these amazing little chicken sandwiches, with home-made mayo and wafer-thin slices of jalapeno pepper. Beyond words.

Well, Michael was not going to be outdone, so he brought in the big guns: The "Slam Dunk Sisters", Catherine and Laura. They started cooking for Michael (who gave them the nickname) at Havenhurst just after Thriller was released. At the risk of sounding like a Food Network geek (guilty, sort of), they knew how to cook with love. The prepared simple comfort food that I'm sure Michael loved from a very young age. So as the Bad album got on track, Catherine and Laura continued to prepare Michael's meals.

Sometime early in the projected Michael thought it would be great if we stopped working for an hour or two on Friday afternoons and gathered in the studio for a giant family dinner together. You guessed it: "Family Friday Dinner" was born, and the Slam Dunk Sisters became our personal chefs.

I have spent more than a few minutes in my seminars and my writings describing "Family Friday Dinners" and the Slam Dunk Sisters. There is something very special about sharing a meal together with family and friends. Homes are built around kitchens. Holidays are celebrated with specific foods. Celebrations almost always involve meals, beverages and treats. Food is essential to survival, but it can and should be so much more. A great meal shared with family and friends is truly a memorable event.

So "Family Friday Dinner" during the "Bad" and "Dangerous" albums became the highlight of the week. It was what we looked forward to and often talked about. I remember clearly watching the security camera of the parking lot on the TV in the studio, and we would get so excited when we saw Catherine's car pull in Fridays; it meant dinner was very near.

Yes, the food was delicious, and I'll get to that in a moment. But it was also the times that my wife Debbie and daughter Amanda would sometimes join us, as would Bruce's wife Bea. Michael Boddicker might have his daughters there, and Frank Dileo would often mysteriously show up on Fridays. I don't think Bill Bray or Miko Brando missed too many "Family Friday Dinners" either. It was food, friendship, laughter and stories.

The food was, in Michael's words, "Country." Turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potato pie, greens, fried chicken... and of course Catherine's amazing banana puddin'. (Although you can't see it... I am actually just staring into space for a few moments... sorry.)

OK, I'm back.

A few weeks ago I started thinking about the seminars at Westlake this June. I started thinking about reunions and homecomings, and what makes them complete. The answer? Food. Yes, there will be music and stories and memories... but there had to be food.

So... I came up with a crazy idea, and I made a phone call to a dear friend I had not spoken to in more than twenty years: Catherine. We talked and laughed and swapped stories, and finally I got up the courage to ask her a question: Would the original "Slam Dunk Sisters consider providing dinner for my VIP guests at the Homecoming, and snacks for everyone, so everyone could taste the food Michael loved so much? She started giggling and said YES!!!

So let me make sure you understand what is going on here.

On June 23, 24 and 25, we will be at Westlake Studio D, where we produced the Bad album and worked on parts of Dangerous and HIStory. We will be in the same room where Michael and Siedah sang "Man In The Mirror." We will be in the same room where Michael whispered the "Pillow Talk" at the beginning of "I Just Can't Stop Loving You." There is an endless amount of history in this room, but there will also be food. Food that Michael loved, prepared by the two women who prepared it for him and us countless times before. At the risk of sounding corny, this is your chance to hear, feel, see, taste and smell how it felt to be in the studio with us.

Now... VIP tickets are very limited, and those will include the full dinner plus and an extra 3-hours of music and stories. But I have asked Catherine to perpare EVERY ticket holder a light lunch and get the chance to taste her and Laura's food and meet them.

Does that make sense? Let's recap:
All Access = Seminar + light lunch.
VIP = Seminar + light lunch + complete dinner + bonus 3 hours.

So now you are starting to see what a vital role food took in our productions, and why I think it is so important and exciting to bring the Slam Dunk Sisters into The Homecoming.

Exactly seven days from now, tickets will go on sale, at 11:59pm (New York Time), Friday night, March 14th. I am very limited on space for VIP and All-Access (standard) tickets, so please buy your tickets early before they are gone.

Hear things you have never heard.
See things you have never seen.
Learn things you never knew.
Eat like you are part of the team.

Atención amigos de habla española!

We will have a Spanish translator for you on the June 23rd seminar! This will not disrupt the seminar in the least, rather we will transmit the dialog in Spanish to headsets for you. We have a large group coming from South America, and I want to make sure you can understand as much as possible, for your full enjoyment. Bienvenido a mi estudio!

I am happy that all of these pieces are coming together. There is so much going on behind the scenes, so much generosity and friendship being shown, I am proud to be a small part of such an amazing community.

In The Studio With MJ seminars at Westlake Studios commemorate 5th anniversary of King of Pop’s death

The second quarter of 2014 is shaping up to be an absolute blockbuster for Michael Jackson fans all around the world. There is a new album of unreleased material on the way, and not one, not two, but SEVEN In The Studio With MJ seminars scheduled across the United States and Europe between April and June!

The European leg will see Brad Sundberg’s seminars hit studios in Amsterdam (Netherlands), Brussels (Belgium) and St. Petersburg (Russia) throughout late April.

The Amsterdam stop, which takes place on Saturday, April 19 coincides perfectly withEuropean Jackson Event 2014, held in same country the following day on Sunday, April 20. Less than a handful of tickets remain available for Amsterdam, so if you haven’t got tickets yet and intend on attending, you’d better act fast!
Brussels takes place four days later on Wednesday, April 23, followed by two seminars in St. Petersburg on Saturday, April 26 (which is completely sold out) and Sunday, April 27.

From there Sundberg will head back to the U.S. for the long-awaited “Homecoming” seminars – held at the legendary Westlake Studios in Los Angeles, California on June 23, 24 and 25 – to commemorate the 5th anniversary of Jackson’s passing.

“Experience the one-of-a-kind music, photo and video-filled seminar,” teases Sundberg on the event page. ”You will see and hear what it was like to be in the studio with Michael and the team of engineers and producers who created these songs, through a carefully crafted timeline of music, video and behind-the-scenes information.”
You’ll also learn about the amazingly detailed sound scapes built by Sundberg for Jackson at Neverland Valley Ranch. Brad is generous with his insights and knowledge, and there will be time for questions.

“The CORE seminar (six hours) will be essentially the same every day,” explains Sundberg. “However it will have some new elements I am working on, meaning if you have been to my seminar before, there will be something new for you.”

“There may be different guests on certain days, but there will not be a specific ‘amazing day’ better than the others. I want every seminar to be as good as it can be, for all of my ticket holders.”
As with all In The Studio With MJ seminars, Sundberg offers attendees two options – the Standard Admission “All Access” ticket and the limited “VIP” ticket.

A light lunch is included with all Standard Admission tickets. You will also enjoy a special refreshment prepared by the Slam Dunk Sisters.

The “Slam Dunk Sisters”, Catherine and Laura, started cooking for Michael Jackson just after ‘Thriller’ was released. During the early stages of recording the ‘Bad’ album Michael thought it would be great if he and his team of engineers and producers stopped working for an hour or two on Friday afternoons and gathered in the studio for a giant family dinner together. “Family Friday Dinner” was born, and the Slam Dunk Sisters became their personal chefs – a ritual that continued throughout the recording of both the ‘Bad’ and ‘Dangerous’ albums.
When you purchase a VIP ticket, you’ll experience the complete In The Studio With MJ seminar, plus you will experience firsthand the special “Family Fridays” tradition that the studio crew really grew to love.
Tickets for “The Homecoming” seminars went on sale less than 24 hours ago and the response so far has been overwhelming.

The “VIP” ticket allocation has completely sold out for all three seminars, however Standard Admission “All Access” tickets still remain available for all three events.

“To be clear, tickets ARE still available,” announced Sundberg on the In The Studio With MJFacebook page today. “The VIPs are sold out, however the ALL ACCESS tickets still include the full 6-hour seminar, special guests, snacks and a Slam Dunk Sister’s treat.”

“Seriously, I am so looking forward to meeting each of you, hearing where you are from, and spending a day together in a studio I ‘grew up’ in.”

Brad Sundberg / In The Studio With Michael Jackson posted:
Greetings Ticket Holders!

I am Brad Sundberg, host and producer of "In The Studio With MJ - The Homecoming." I want to take a moment to introduce myself and thank you for purchasing a ticket to our amazing June event in Los Angeles. The response has been overwhelming, and we are still more than 90 days out from our first day back at Westlake. So again, thank you.

I am so excited to be working with Catherine and Laura (the Slam-Dunk Sisters!) on this event. You really need to understand how much food was a part of our production process, and how much respect we all have for each other. I have bragged on their food for longer than I care to admit, and it will be so much fun having them with us again! (I have other guests and surprises in the works, but nothing I can share with you just yet.)

But... I do have a bit of news (hopefully good news), that I want you to hear first. I have heard your requests , and I have listened. When I put tickets up for sale, I think all VIP tickets (full day with dinner included) sold out in about 12 minutes. It was amazing, and I was humbled by the response. I have received countless notes asking for more VIP tickets to be made available... and I listened.

The simple truth is I cannot add any more people into Studio D, per my agreement with Westlake. But I can increase the number of VIP dinner tickets, which I will do next week.

I spoke to Catherine today, and asked her if she would mind preparing food for more guests, and she laughed and said she would love to!

So here is my idea: The seminar will start at 11am each day, and will roll until around 4:30 or 5pm. At that point, we will start setting up the Slam-Dunk Sisters dinner. VIP ticket holders will stay for dinner and a couple more hours of stories and music, and All-Access ticket holders will end their day at 5pm. HOWEVER, next week I will give All-Access ticket holders the option of upgrading their ticket to VIP, through an upgrade button that will be available on the website, and paying the difference in price. Again, this is an option - your All-Access ticket will still be valid if you choose NOT to upgrade on the VIP dinner - it is entirely your choice. I simply want to make the experience available to all ticket holders, if they want.

Like all "In The Studio With MJ" seminars, there will be strict rules in place in terms of no cell phones, electronics of any sort, etc., in the studio. (You will be allowed to take photos and video before and after the seminar, but your items will be checked and locked away during the seminar). Also, costumes and MJ imitators are not allowed in the seminar. It is simply not the right place, out of respect for Michael. I will share more details and guidelines as we get closer to the actual date.

I want you to be the first to know about this ticket upgrade option. Anyone who has an All-Access ticket will have the chance to upgrade to VIP next week. There are still a few All-Access tickets available, to please encourage your friends to pick them up while they have the chance. Tuesday, June 24 is fully sold out, and I cannot add a single ticket more to that date, but upgrades will be available.

Also, we will have a Spanish translator available on Monday, June 23. This will be done entirely on headphones, so it will not disrupt the flow of the seminar at all - but if you know a group that wants Spanish translation, I would highly recommend they consider grabbing a ticket for June 23.

Are you completely confused now? I hope not. We are simply allowing more guests to stay for the entire event, and I think they will find it very worthwhile.

Have a great rest of the week, and thanks again for your patronage and support!

Sincerely,
Brad.
