Book: Remember the Time: Protecting Michael Jackson in His Final Days / Review @pg8

Some in this thread or just as guilty of the same things haters do and say

They were smart enough to call 911 at 3 & 4 . So obviously they were taught how to react on certain occasions.

It does seem that a particular one in her/his desperate attempt to hide Jacksons' pestering of MJ at the time, is trying to dismiss every simple detail mentioned in the book.

Please all be reminded that the most important revelation in the book was MJs determination to stay as far as possible from his family , for very valid reasons, , that Randy Jackson smashed the gate, asked for money and threatened to call the tabloids . With whom he slept who he dated should not be of great concern to us, but as long as Randy and co are after the kids money, the focus needs to remain on exposing them

Interesting focus some of these posts have taken. Better to deflect with latent venom then gather support for one’s argument.

Gold Pants Girl, needless to say, I am not part of the we that believes what most say.

Ivy, you were not able to find other instances where the children reacted in that manner. You were only able to find instances where adults denied Michael was the iconic Michael Jackson. The only reason this discussion is happening is because of the tale the authors said. You are free to believe it happened as these authors said and to characterize that reaction as negative or positive. I am free to not believe these authors as I have never heard of Michael’s daughter or any of Michael's children reacting in this manner from anyone but these authors.

I wasn't looking for any and if you think I will spend a second to try to prove anything to you specifically you are mistaken. I'm aware how you stick to something and parrot it 14,567 times. I had responded to someone else.

Personally I read the book, the financials part I didn't like it, the rest of the stories about Michael I loved it. I'm not interested in convincing anyone in any way and I don't care about anyone's love or hate about this or other books. I enjoyed the book. I can't care less how anyone else reacts to it. I'll say this though, where's the same anger and/or being against to Ron Weisner's book which actually portrays Michael quite negatively? Why no effort to debunk his negative versions of events and this much effort to portray bodyguards stories as tales? Personally I would be more concerned with a guy saying Michael had people make four passes to lighten his cover photos then a father trying to watch his kids play at a restaurant or a man meeting up with women.

Ivy, you could not prove that tale to anyone including me.

I posted what I felt about Weisner’s book in the appropriate thread. If you feel there should be more effort to debunk Weisner's tales, you should do so. You have parroted your support of these authors' book a number times. I do not believe anyone is questioning that.

LOL Tygger you are as funny as always. I saw that "I'm not interested in convincing anyone in any way" was way over your head. Okay let's act like I was trying to prove something to you or anyone and everyone thinks the same way as you do so that you could be happy. I aim to please.

Give this book and any book or any release for that matter a chance. More and more media stories and fan / media reviews will surface, read them, read portions of the book that becomes available one way or another. Only after that make up your mind to buy or not buy the books. Do not let people who haven't read the books, who doesn't know a single thing about the books content shape your minds. To be clear I'm not saying buy any book, just make sure that you give every release a fair evaluation - an evaluation based on information and not based on feelings or bias or rushed judgments. Unfortunately MJ fans are notorious in giving rushed emotional responses/forming opinions without knowing anything about the content of any releases.

It is very understandable why would Paris say he was not MJ to protect him .

That is so sad. That event must be this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDj1w7LtCFk

He must have been scared. Poor man. :( He seems very vulnerable without his guards. They should have left him alone.

Ivy Very good advice indeed!!! That review where the writer included the information about the weapons made me feel depressed. I don't know if that was what the writer wanted to convey--a dreary sad man and his environment, so I guess it is best to not focus on one type of review..

About the bodyguards still working with him but remaining in Vegas: I don't know if this is correct since it was said by that man, but Michael had bodyguards in LA, so if this is true was he going to discharge the LA guards and take the Vegas ones with him? Why didn't he just take the Vegas guards with him to LA? Personally, I feel the Vegas guards were no longer working with Michael.

This book is attacked more than the Weisner one which is strange, and the Weisner one came out already.

^^Why some fans always have to say bad things about Michael. That comment about his scaly hands, what is that about. I meet people every day with dry cracking hands, and when the summer comes around the feet is just the same.

I plan on getting this book tomorrow. I hope to be able to come back here and talk about it and some of the events that are revealed in this book with other fans who want to talk about... without being attacked by others who come in here to read what it says and tell us we shouldn't be reading it.

I guess that's probably too much to ask though.

No it is not too much to ask. I want to know more about it because I had intended to buy about 10 copies to share. I want to know your overall opinion of the book in its entirety.

I'm looking forward to receiving this book (and MJ Inc.) and having a discussion with people who've actually read it as well.

He must have been scared. Poor man. :( He seems very vulnerable without his guards. They should have left him alone.

It is understandable. The Chuck E. Cheese event also includes MJ almost running out of the place, trying to get into his car but couldn't (as he didn't have the keys), trying to hide between cars and running across the street into another store. So he was scared, he was vulnerable. It makes all the sense in the world why would Paris / his kids would try to protect him.

That review where the writer included the information about the weapons made me feel depressed.

I want to know your overall opinion of the book in its entirety.

Petra, every book (or project) has it's positives and negatives. For example while I found initial parts of Jermaine's book boring (because it was telling the Jackson 5 story we heard for the millionth time), I believed the later parts of Jermaine's experiences was nice and worth buying. I wasn't happy with drug mention in Cascio book but first hand experiences of someone who was close to Michael was also priceless.

So I don't believe that anything is "perfect" and this book isn't perfect either. While I enjoyed all the nice stories about MJ as a father and his interactions with his kids, the financial/ debt aspect made me uneasy. It might be their experience with MJ - good and bad and perhaps I have was being selfish in wanting something just filled with all the positive stuff.

What I'm trying to say is that most probably you'll find some stuff that you wouldn't like or approve or make you feel depressed but there could be little gems there that you would like as well.

They are very clear in the book that they didn't go to LA and how Michael Amir took over Bill's duties and therefore their contact and knowledge about stuff was minimal at that time. It looks like Michael occasionally called them asking when they would come to LA and there were talks about them going to London. I don't know if it is considered to be working for Michael or not and that's why in the review I wrote the book covers December 2006 to January 2009.

This book is attacked more than the Weisner one which is strange, and the Weisner one came out already.

Simply put - whatever going on here isn't about debunking negative stories about Michael or Jacksons. If that's the case the focus would have been on Weisner. Neither Chuck E.Cheese nor meeting with women at hotels are negative stories but they are being attacked. The reason for it is either 1) such stories goes against people's perceptions about Michael, 2) some people having issues with private stories and/or bodyguards writing a book or 3) some people are set to be against this book no matter what and would twist anything and everything to be a negative situation.

Or I was the idiot who bought and made summaries of everything and as I didn't summarize it, all the critics don't have much to go on about Weisner book and they cannot be bothered to buy & read it themselves.

I guess that's probably too much to ask though.

probably :) I mean in the last few days we have seen everything bodyguards wrote being portrayed as a "tale", yet everything RF wrote accepted almost as fact. Funny isn't it?

I'm looking forward to receiving this book (and MJ Inc.) and having a discussion with people who've actually read it as well.

I read MJ Inc too, yeah another advance copy :p

We will have to meet back here and discuss it. I'm sure there will be many things shared that will make us love him even more, and other events that will probably be sad. And some that will surely be funny. :)

It is understandable. The Chuck E. Of course Paris would try to protect him. His children were smart. Smarter than the average kids, I believe. He taught them well.

I can't even imagine how he must have felt when he had to hide like that. After the trial, he probably felt like someone would take his life. And he surely was tired of people taking pictures of him everywhere he went and would sell them off to the tabloids to make fun of him or whatever. Terrible, he must have felt hunted.

I'm sure Michael's siblings aren't looking forward to this book. I just read a review and talks about how Randy crashed his gates and demanded his "**cking money." They are going to be exposed for leaching off of Michael, even when he was struggling to get back on his own feet and regain his life after that trial.

Michael Jackson’s security team
Bill Whitfield (near right) and Javon Beard spent the final 2½ years of Michael Jackson’s life by his side. Now, they’ve written a book about the reclusive pop star. Photo: Trent Black; Getty Images

In 2006, Bill Whitfield was hired by a friend to work security for a mystery client who turned out to be Michael Jackson.

To his shock, Whitfield, who had previously done security for Uptown Records founder Andre Harrell, was to be the entirety of Jackson’s new security detail. So Javon Beard, who had done security at a resort and at a treatment plant but never for a celebrity of this magnitude, was also recruited.

Whitfield and Beard spent 2½ years working together as Jackson’s security team, and often served as Jackson’s sole conduit to the outside world, planning every aspect of his life to ensure the safest possible conditions and keeping him shielded even from his own family — whom Michael required to make appointments before he would see them.

In their new book, “Remember the Time: Protecting Michael Jackson in His Final Days,” written with journalist Tanner Colby, they share their own perspective on the complex reality of Michael Jackson’s life in the years leading up to his death in June 2009.

Here, they reveal some of the craziest stories from their time with the King of Pop.

Family troubles

Whitfield was waiting for his boss to emerge from his home on Feb. 27, 2007, as Jackson prepared to attend Elizabeth Taylor’s 75th birthday party at a resort on Lake Las Vegas, Nevada, when he heard a loud smashing sound and saw a gray Mercedes SUV crash through the partially opened gate. Whitfield wound up facing down the driver, his laser-sighted pistol pointed straight at the man’s chest, only to realize just seconds before he was about to pull the trigger that it was Jackson’s younger brother, Randy.

Randy refused to leave until Michael paid him money he claimed he owed him, standing outside the house screaming, “Michael owe me money! I want my f – - kin’ money!” When he told Michael what was happening, he “raised his eyebrows for a moment,” then “winced” and said, “Get rid of him,” according to Whitfield. When Randy still wouldn’t leave 30 minutes later, a distraught Michael told his staff, “I’m just going to go to bed.” Randy stayed for two more hours before their father, Joe Jackson, was called, and convinced Randy to leave.

Michael was so distraught from the incident that he bailed on Taylor’s party, even though he’d been anxiously preparing for it for two weeks, including hiring Roberto Cavalli to design a special outfit for him, and flying in his hairstylist and makeup artist.

Michael’s panic attack

Jackson was so paranoid about safety that even with a fully armed security staff on premises, “he was always going around the house at 3 [or] 4 in the morning, checking locks on all the doors,” recalls Whitfield, who notes that Jackson “trusted no one” and “didn’t sleep much.” Jackson even had “panic buttons” installed in several rooms for him and his children to press if there were trouble. “The alarm didn’t sound inside the house,” writes Whitfield. “Just in the [security] trailer, to alert us. And it was a loud-ass alarm.”

The first time the panic button was pressed, early one morning in April 2007, Whitfield heard it in the security trailer, ran around the house toward the kitchen door and stormed the kitchen with his semi-automatic Glock drawn — only to find Jackson and his children quietly eating their cereal. “They saw me and they froze,” he writes. “[Jackson’s son Blanket] was across the room by the TV, where the panic button was mounted on the wall. He was just walking around, hitting buttons.” While everyone was safe, Jackson was not happy about having a weapon pulled on his family. “Oh,” writes Whitfield, “he got on me about that.”

Shocked by the real world

Whitfield recalls the first time Jackson ever saw homeless people, from the window of his limo while driving around Las Vegas in early 2007. According to Whitfield, “Mr. Jackson saw these people and said, ‘Why are these people out there?’ ”

“Those are homeless people, sir,” Whitfield replied. “He was like, ‘Really? Wow.’ ”

Jackson asked Beard, who was driving, to pull over, and he watched them in amazement from his limo. He then asked Beard to call a homeless woman over toward the car. Jackson gave her $300, leaving her close to tears as she thanked him profusely. But as Beard started to pull away, they noticed a man she was with try to take the money, so Jackson gave the man $300 as well. “The lady started crying,” writes Beard, “like she’d been saved.”

Jackson then spent the rest of the night giving hundred-dollar bills to homeless people. “It’s just amazing,” he later said. “This country is so rich, and these people are poor and living on the street.”

Kissing in the back seat

While in Virginia in September 2007, Jackson told Whitfield that he needed to pick someone up from the airport. When Whitfield asked if the person needed to be vetted, Jackson said no, and referred to his mystery visitor simply as “Friend.” This visitor, it turned out, was Jackson’s secret girlfriend.

When they picked her up at Dulles Airport, they found a raving beauty, about 5-foot-4 with an Eastern European accent and dark, curly hair. They picked her up and drove her to a Hampton Inn in Chantilly, about 45 minutes from where Jackson was living. For the week or so that she was in town, Whitfield would drive Jackson to see her after the kids went to sleep. They would sneak in through the hotel’s emergency exit, and Jackson would stay there for hours but never spend the night, always making sure he was home before his children awoke. Whitfield and Beard believe the relationship was special for Jackson, as he would have them get gifts for her, such as engraved items from Tiffany.

Jackson and “Friend” were always affectionate and cozy. Whenever they were together they would “hold hands, sit very close together in the car, hug, kiss,” according to Whitfield. There were even times when they’d arrive at a destination, and whichever man was driving them would struggle to get their attention because they were making out in the back.

Joke’s on Prince

Jackson loved to walk around in public, and would often go shopping in creative disguises, dressing like anything from a biker to a mummy. In the summer of 2007, Jackson vacationed in secret at a mansion 10 minutes outside of Middleburg, Va. When he wanted to shop at the local Walmart, he donned a veil, with Whitfield trailing 5 feet behind.

But rather than deflecting attention, the veil made the store’s security guard suspicious that he was going to rob the place. Police were called, and Whitfield needed to diffuse the situation, but didn’t want to reveal that it was Jackson, because a mob always managed to form when that happened. So he convinced the police officer that the man under the veil was Prince. The police backed off, and crowds that had started to form began to disperse.

As it happened, Jackson considered Prince a fierce rival. When he was later told that he had been represented as Prince, he laughed and replied, “No wonder they left us alone.”

AliCat, please don't be naive. Most fans , who really did follow MJ around the world know very well that he used to spend the time in the hotels with some ladies for not professional reasons.

Here's how Michael felt about women...

The Ideal Woman:

"I don't like the women who are always saying, "My nails need to be done. I have to do my toes. I need a manicure." I hate all that. I like it when girls are a little more tomboyish. If they wrestle, climb a tree...I love that. It is sexier to me. I like class though. Class is everything."

"The ones (girls he liked) who were classy and quiet and not into all the sex and all the craziness because I am not into that."

"It is a rarity (girls who like practical jokes, comics and goofing around). If I find one, I will go nuts. Especially if she has those qualities and is beautiful inside. It would be a home run for me. That's why guys hang out. Because they can do that."

Michael's Modesty:

(On using sexuality to increase ticket and record sales): "No, that's crazy, like some of these singers who put bulges in their pants, that's crazy. I don't understand that. That's like disgusting to me when they do stuff like that. That's embarrassing. I don't want nobody to even look at me down....like looking for that. That would just embarrass me so bad, oh God."

"When I think about it, I would never say this on TV, but if I went on stage thinking about what goes through women's heads, I would never go out on stage. If I was suddenly to start thinking about what they were thinking about....sex, or what I look like naked, then, oh God, that would be so embarrassing. I could never go out. That's so horrible." Michael was referring to the fact that he was approached many times with women who would blatantly tell him that they wanted to have sex with him.

This is how I see Michael Jackson, not what you are describing. Call me old fashion, but to me Michael will always be a gentleman and that's another reason why I admire him so!

I'm sorry, but he was pulling Schmuley's leg. LOL!! How can anyone even read that with a straight face, after witnessing time and time again what he did on stage. I think he was just telling the
Rabbi what I think he wanted him to hear.

I don't even need to post examples.

Call me old fashion, but to me Michael will always be a gentleman and that's another reason why I admire him so!

you could have sex and still be a gentleman.

The same man who distributed food to homeless people with his sister Janet while living at Hayvenhurst, sang about homelessness in one of his most popular hits, MITM, and whose MITM short film included scenes of the U.S. homeless, never saw a homeless person until 2007 from his limousine. Good thing these authors added what was necessary to get published and did not have to entertain a Kickstarter initiative.

AliCat, you are free to believe what you wish about Michael and I would encourage you to do so. Maybe you wanted to see Michael in a more substantial heterosexual relationship that may have even included a traditional family. I would not encourage you to believe in my personal image of Michael or anyone else’s for that matter. I always find it humorous when some will dismiss Michael’s own words in favor of their own view of the man.

GreenEyes dismiseed his words because of his actions, not "in favor of her own view". Have you ever seen the Gold Pants? Do you think he did not know what he was doing there? Or when he grabbed himself or did a sexy move on stage?

Here's Michael saying it in his own voice, how he was a gentleman. You guy's can weave whatever connotation into whatever double standard you want. The man speaks!

Yes he said he was a gentleman.. because he was .. that doesn't mean he was a virgin or celebant. Just he didn't kiss and tell and he treated women with respect ... That is a gentleman and the best way for him to reply to the rude question from Oprah. he could have said yes i am a virgin .. he did not.. He said he was a gentleman.

Michael Lee Bush stated Michael was very aware of his sexuality on stage. He knew what he was doing. Also the gold pant were made to accentuate EVERY Muscle in his body. Michael would downl play it to the media when questioned. ( for obvious reasons) His image. Now this doesn;t mean Michael wasn't an innocent soul or childlike. He was just very playful and not afraid to embrace his sexuality on stage.

But his stage presence is not the same as personal relationships. Of course he was a gentleman he had dignity. this doesn't mean he didn't have sexual relationships with women he cared about or trusted... This doesn't mean he was player or horemonger either. Michael was a normal but execeptional hetrosexual man.

gentleman: a civilized, educated, sensitive, or well-mannered man. Yes he was a gentleman, I don't think anyone saying the opposite. It’s also about approaching any situation with respect, dignity, and tact - such as not answering questions like Oprah asked. Still that doesn't mean he cannot date and/or have sex. He could have dated and have sex and based on how he treated the women (with respect, sensitive, well manners), he would still be a gentleman. You are being a little naive (or young) if you think gentleman means no dating and no sex.

When Michael said he was a gentleman, in the context he meant he did not talk about his private/sex life publicly. That's all.

Michael's own words. He loves the interaction of the sexes, he loves women and believes sex is one of Gods gifts. but he is against using sex to manipulate.

"I love the interaction between the sexes; it is a natural part of life and I love women.
I just think that when sex is used as a form of blackmail or power, it's a repugnant use of one of God's gifts.”

Michael Jackson in his autobiography Moonwalk, 1988
