Jacksons win music award, but Michael was 'riding a camel'

LOS ANGELES — The Jacksons were crowned icons at the BMI Urban Awards, but the King of Pop was an absentee.

Janet Jackson presented her music-making brothers — Michael, Tito, Jackie, Marlon, Jermaine and Randy — with the lifetime achievement BMI Icon award following a musical tribute at the award show celebrating R&B and hip-hop's top hitmakers. While Tito, Jackie, Marlon and Randy reunited Thursday to accept the award, Jermaine and Michael didn't attend the Wilshire Theatre ceremony.

Where was the Moonwalker?

"I don't know," Marlon told The Associated Press before the show. "I think he's in Egypt riding a camel or something."

The Jackson Five — which included Michael along with Marlon, Jackie, Tito and Jermaine — was a groundbreaking, best-selling act that debuted on the 1969 album "Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5." The group simply became the Jacksons after leaving Motown in 1976, replacing Jermaine with Randy. They continued their multiplatinum success with such hits as "ABC" and "I Want You Back."

"It's a great honor to know your music influenced a generation," said Tito. "We're very proud of this moment."

The tribute kicked off with dance troupe Jabbawockeez performing a funky "Dancing Machine" routine. Music group ONE sang "I Want You Back." JoJo and Lloyd partnered on "I'll Be There" before Mario unleashed a high-energy rendition of "Heartbreak Hotel" and Keri Hilson crooned "Who's Loving You." The finale featured Mario, Bobby Valentino, Lloyd and Ray J teaming up for "Never Can Say Goodbye."

Before presenting her brothers with the award, Janet said her family was her greatest commodity and that she was proud to salute her siblings for their accomplishments in the music industry.

Following the acceptance of the icon award, the Jackson brothers posed on stage for photos with father Joseph, mother Katherine and sisters Janet, LaToya and Rebbie. The Jacksons did not perform.

Other BMI Urban Award winners included Soulja Boy, Polow Da Don, Rodney Jerkins and DJ Montay. Song of the year was awarded to Ne-Yo, Espen Lind and Amund Bjorklund for "Irreplaceable." Jonathan "J.R." Rotem, Kanye West and T-Pain were honored as producers of the year. T-Pain was also selected as songwriter of the year. Universal Music Publishing Group was given the publisher of the year award.

BMI — Broadcast Music Inc. — is a performing rights organization that collects license fees on behalf of its songwriters, composers and music publishers and distributes them as royalties to those members whose works have been performed.

It is such a treat to see the family together and smiling. They are well known for their magical smiles.
I am sorry MJ wasn't there, his children aught to see their family getting honoured too, it would give them a sense of pride in their history.

They are such a beautiful family. Lovley picture of them together :D

Did anybody happen to see that picture of Corey Feldman. Apparently he was also at this event, propably hoping to plead his case for MJ's friendship, in person. To bad MJ wasn't there to hear is plea. LOL!

Michael doesnt attend any awards. The World Music Awards fiasco scarred him from any more award shows for a while. Every awards show floats rumors that Michael might appear and he NEVER does. I dont think we should even bother suspecting unless Michael's camp confirms it themselves otherwise we all know he won't show up. I can guarantee he WONT be at the MTV awards.

Yes, I saw it. I can imagine lots of people turned up because they thought MJ would be there. Glad MJ didn't have to face that mess.

Sweet pictures. Thank you.
This morning I was hoping that Michael would turn up and take his children with him to
experience the joy of seeing their daddy receive honour, but after seeing the pictures
I am not disappointed that he didn't go, cause as usual the emphasis would have been on him
and I feel that the brothers are more in focus at this event which isn't a bad thing for them.
What lovely pictures. Looks like Randy was overcomed with emotions. What a Musical family.
The Royal Family of music, indeed. Every member in it has achieved something, even papa joe.,
It is truly incredible. I am in awe.

He was still part of the group.
And I'm sure his brothers wouldnt be upset about him getting the attention cuz he always have.
They should be used to that by now.
And just for the record, I'm not surprised either that MJ wasnt there.
Even tho it woulda been nice. Jermaine too.

:giggle:

aww, that's unfortunate that he didn't show. Woulda been nice to see them all together since the trial...in good times. However, they all look great as it turned out. Janet = A-MA-zing!! Loves the outfit. Lovely!! And their Mother is just so proud. She's glowing over her babies. :cloud9: And she should be.

I don't have access to video at the mo but I cant' wait to see the Jabbawokeez performance when I get home. Hopefully the rest of the tribute will end up on youtube as well. Sounds like it was a good night.

Thanks to all for posting the news/links/pics. :flowers:

What exactly are you objecting to? What did I say wrong?

"I don't know," Marlon told The Associated Press before the show. "I think he's in Egypt riding a camel or something."

That was a stupid thing of Marlon to say.

Anyway, congrats to the brothers. I didn't expect Michael to show up and niether should any of you. You can say without the Jacksons, there wouldn't have been any Michael, but without Michael, there wouldn't have been any Jacksons, and I'm of the mind that (and I know I'm gonna start a sh*t storm but oh well) Michael would have made it whether he had started with a group or not, just like 90% of the successful solo acts in the world.

MOCKERY???????????

Yeah it was a joke..

I agree...he should know by now how the media run with things...

I doubt Marlon said that. I wouldn't put it pass the media to put words into Marlons mouth to make it seem that the brothers are at odds with |Mj, but if he did say that, then maybe he is just expressing how he feels about his brother not showing up.

I think it was a harmless joke. Anyone wanting to miscontrue it as the brothers being at odds probably want to see it as that. Seemed like a little brotherly ribbing..in a cute way, imo. Nothing more. And who knows if Michael actually IS in Egypt somewhere riding a camel. The man gets around, no? :p

I agree. And when it comes to Michael and his siblings, I really don't care if they fight in the streets. All I would do is supply the band aid. I really don't see why fans can't let the brothers fight. All brothers fight. That is brotherly love for you.:D
