Australian heatwave/bushfires... some MJJC members directly affected

Re: Australian heatwave ends with "day from Hell"

25 years is the maximum for deliberately starting a fire, they can also be charged with manslaughter or murder if you can prove their intent to cause harm. So if you add them to the charges they could end up with life.

Still not enough imo... they should have their hands burnt off so they can't do it again.

Here's a beautiful photo:

Koala's are very wild and dont usually do too well with human contact, so for this little fella to sit and take a drink from this CFA volunteer is incredible.

We've lost a lot of wildlife

I agree and I can just image how many animals were lost. That is incredible that koala is allowing a human to give it a drink. I just love koalas out of all the Australian animals I think the koalas are the most cutest.

SAM became the most famous koala in the world when firefighter David Tree stopped to give her a drink amid the devastation.
Pictures of Sam, who turned out to be female, travelled around the globe and featured in major newspapers including The New York Times, London's The Sun and on CNN.

The image provided a much-needed picture of hope in a week filled with news of despair. Yesterday Sam was recovering in Mountain Ash Wildlife Shelter.

All proceeds go to the CFA

Carer Jenny Shaw said she suffered burns on her paws and was in a lot of pain, but was on the road to recovery.
She was put on an IV drip and is on antibiotics and pain relief treatment.

"She is lovely - very docile - and she has already got an admirer. A male koala keeps putting his arms around her," Ms Shaw said. "She will need regular attention and it will be a long road to recovery, but she should be able to be released back into the wild in about five months."

A wonderful story coming out of such devastation.
Take care and stay safe LJ, I hope the fires are all soon put out. The arsonists should have life, not just 25yrs, because they have caused hundreds of deaths and millions/billions of dollars of damage.

Australian Fires

Hi all, just letting you know my family survived the fires and our two dogs. We stayed home but had no choice but to survive in our swimming pool, it was unbelieveable!!!

We lost both our homes but we are all alive and that's all that matters.

Cheers,
Dave

My prayers are with you and your family Dave I'm glad you guys are ok.

I heard the fires are little bit calmed down now??
That is just horrible loss, I can't even imagine it.. everything you own has been destroyed and have nothing but your clothes on...
I feel also bad for all the animals that has died in the fires.. I've read that some bird species that was menaced has now disappeared totally? Is that true?

My thoughts and prayers are with all those who has lost their home and relatives and who have survived the fire..

I hope help is at hand for our members that are affected by the fires not just now but in a few months time when the hard work really begins to get back to normal. I can't believe how big these fires are and the damage they are doing. Hoping the victims get the help they need.

A friend from my work has recounted her brother's ordeal, they were given the order to evacuate as the fires headed for their homes, they ran with nothing but their kids and the family dog and got into their cars the police created a convoy and 6 cars followed a police car. The smoke meant they couldn't see where they were going and they were told not to use headlights which would reflect off the smoke. They weren't allowed to use windscreen wipers as the rubber would melt and smear on their windscreens.
They were led to the local football ground and placed in the center and fire trucks made a circle around them. They all survived but their houses didn't. They were saying the flames were racing along at up to 60km (around 40mph). :ermm:

I'm praying for all the Australian people.

The news i hear here, are awfull.

Please be very careful members living in Australia.

God Bless you all

That is so sad :(
But thank god your friend's brother and his family are safe

I did some shopping at Coles today, just to contribute my little bit---my only income is a aged pension-- but people were buying so much. It was good to see.

At a pet shop in the shopping centre, they had signs up asking for donations---which were closing today so they could be sent from Strathpine, Queensland.
As I walked past, the shop girls were writing on--and taping up boxes-----food/toys.collars/leads/bedding/bowls/etc.
All up, there were 8--10 LARGE boxes, ready to go to Victoria.
Dawn

It's very touching to see how Australians always band together in times like this. It's very special when a people come together and donate their own money very willingly to help those of us in need. It's beautiful.

I agree, our mateship spirit never fails :)

Fire fury as man charged

AN accused arsonist charged over a bushfire that killed 21 people was last night isolated behind bars under the tight security.
Fears for the safety of the 39-year-old Latrobe Valley man led to a court ban on reporting his identity or clues to who he was.

Police drove him to Melbourne to be locked up at a secret location, rather than lock him in a country police station for fear of vigilantes.

The suspect faces counts of arson causing death, intentionally or recklessly causing death and possession of child pornography.

Three men hurled abuse at the suspect as he was driven from court in a police van.

Police Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon pleaded for calm amid fears of a violent backlash against suspected arsonists, who may have been responsible for up to 130 of the 181 deaths counted so far.

"I am very concerned there are a lot of people who are very angry about these fires, and they have a perfect right to be angry,'' she said.

"There's enough emotion and enough harm at the moment. We all understand that, but we don't need any more.''

She said survivors should resist the temptation to take vigilante action.

"We need community restraint, we don't need anyone to be considering vigilante behaviour. That is not going to help any of us.''

The suspect was charged in Morwell Magistrates' Court over the horrific Churchill blaze in Gippsland, which killed 21 people at Callignee, Upper Callignee, Hazelwood, Jeeralang and Koornalla.

The arson charge carries a maximum penalty of 25 years.
