I got to watch it all day on Saturday and even though I was watching it while working on the computer, I did enjoy it. The production values were TOP NOTCH stuff and really reminded me of "An American Dream." I was an adult when New Edition hit it big, so I wasn't really aware of them until Bobby Brown made his mark at the Soul Train Awards, but a lot of their stuff reminded me of The Jackson 5. I can see why kids loved them so.

Thought that was cute that they sang Jackson 5 songs too-beautiful cast.

After raking in an impressive premiere audience for first edition of BET’s New Edition miniseries, it was a foregone conclusion that “The New Edition Story” would perform well.

Nielsen’s Live+3 ratings, tacking on three days of viewing, are in for the first two parts (with preliminary L+3 numbers for the finale), and that conclusion holds. The premiere drew 3.3 million viewers in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic, and 5.5 million total viewers on BET alone. Part Two’s haul was a just slightly lower 3.1 million in the demo, and 5.3 million total viewers. Part three matched the first night, with 3.3 million in the demo and 5.6 million overall.

All told, the mini brought in 28.4 million viewers to BET, through the initial run and subsequent encores over the week of premiere; 15.7 million of those viewers came via BET.

The miniseries charted the course of Ur-boy band New Edition from their humble Boston beginnings to global megastardom, detailing the controversy and personnel changes along the way, and ruminating on the ultimate cost of fame. The cast includes Bryshere Y. Gray, Elijah Kelley, Luke James, Keith Powers, Algee Smith, and Woody McClainas the adult members of New Edition. “The New Edition Story” is executive produced by Jesse Collins (“Real Husbands of Hollywood”) for JCE Films, a division of Jesse Collins Entertainment; directed by Chris Robinson (“ATL”) and co-produced by Brooke Payne, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe, Johnny Gill, Ralph Tresvant, and Bobby Brown.

BBD interview

During this new interview, Mike Bivins gets a phone call and he says that as a result of this movie, the head of New Edition's record label says they're going to start to get the royalties they never got on their records. That must be a lot of back pay, their first album came out in 1983.

Popcorn Love

Until this upload today, NE's VEVO on Youtube hasn't had anything posted since 2009. It's a performance from the Jerry Lewis telethon in 1983. I wonder if any of their other music videos are going to be posted on VEVO, very few are up now. Other videos have been posted by fans but they're mostly poor video and/or audio quality. They have a video compilation from the late 1980s on VHS, which I have. I don't think it made it to DVD, and it doesn't have anything pass the Heartbreak album.

I think the movie should get a DVD/Blu Ray release, especially since the group has gotten renewed interest since the movie. Younger people who weren't really aware of NE are looking up their videos on Youtube and buying downloads or listening to their music on streaming sites.

I agree!
And even me! Lol! I mean I've always been a fan of theirs but this movie has me riding the NE train all over again.

On the latest Billboard 200 albums chart (dated Feb. 18), MigosCulture arrived atop the chart, scoring the first No. 1 for the hip-hop trio. The set earned 131,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Feb. 2, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 44,000 were in traditional album sales.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the week’s most popular albums based on their overall consumption. That overall unit figure combines pure album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).
Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the latest Billboard 200 chart:

New Edition, All the Number Ones - No. 37 — Following New Edition’s well-received BET biographical mini-series (Jan. 24-26) The New Edition Story, the group returns to the top 40 of the Billboard 200 for the first time in more than 10 years.
The vocal group’s hits compilation All the Number Ones, released in 2000, debuts at No. 37 on the tally, earning 12,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Feb. 2, according to Nielsen Music. The set boasts not just New Edition hits, but also solo smashes from the group’s individual members and spin-off trio Bell Biv DeVoe.

New Edition was last in the top 40 back in 2004 with One Love (debuting and peaking at No. 12). The act also rises 195-85 with its 1988 album Heartbreak (7,000 units; up 79 percent).

According to BET, the three-part movie collected 29 million total viewers through Jan. 30, counting premiere telecasts and encores, across BET and Centric.

Those viewers translated into big music gains, as New Edition sold 20,000 albums in the two weeks ending Feb. 2 — up 1,345 percent compared to the two weeks ending Jan. 19 (a little more than 1,000). Further, the act sold 87,000 song downloads in the Jan. 20-Feb. 2 span (up 1,460 percent) and generated 34.95 million on-demand streams (up 652 percent).

In related New Edition news, Bell Biv DeVoe also capitalizes on the mini-series: the trio’s first album in 15 years, Three Stripes, bows at No. 18 on the Billboard 200 after its release on Jan. 27. They last debuted on the tally with 1993’s Hootie Mack (No. 19).

Various Artists, Now 61 & Now That’s What I Call 90’s Pop - Nos. 5 & 154 — The Now That’s What I Call Music brand continues to find success on the Billboard 200, as the series notches its 125th and 126th charting titles with the arrivals of Now 61 (No. 5) and Now That’s What I Call 90’s Pop (No. 154).

The former title starts with 37,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Feb. 2 (all from traditional album sales), according to Nielsen Music. The 90’s Pop title launches with 5,000 units (again, all from sales).

All 61 of the main, numbered Now albums have reached the top 10, and volumes 2-61 have all debuted in the region.
Remarkably, since the first Now album debuted on the list dated Nov. 14, 1998, Now-branded albums account for 11.2 percent of all various artists titles that have reached the list (1,127 in all). Also something for Now to crow about: since the first Now compilation hit the top 10 (on Jan. 23, 1999), the franchise totals 54 percent of the various artist titles that have visited the top 10.

Back in the golden days of the Now series, in the 2000s, the line was regularly topping the chart with titles selling in excess of 200,000 copies in a single week. While Now albums don’t sell anything near that amount in 2017, they are one of the few bright spots on the compilation landscape. In the past year, the only titles to move more than 20,000 in a week have been Now titles (Now 57-61), The Hamilton Mixtape, and the 2016 Grammy Nominees effort.

Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Getaway - No. 33 — The band’s latest album release re-enters the chart at No. 33 with a 251 percent gain in units (and a 427 percent jump in sales) thanks to a concert ticket/album sale promotion.

Beyoncé, Beyoncé - No. 100 — News of Beyoncé’s pregnancy (on Feb. 1 she announced, via Instagram, that she’s expecting twins with husband Jay Z) perhaps urges gains for some of her albums on the chart: Beyoncé was up 20 percent in units (climbing 122-100) and I Am…Sasha Fierce gains 6 percent (moving 171-166).

It wasn’t a huge shock when BET’s “The New Edition Story” was a success in January. But no one expected it to be as big as it was in both viewership and social media interest.

Even the members of New Edition were taken aback, says singer Johnny Gill, who replaced Bobby Brown for the old-school R&B group’s 1988 “Heart Break” album. He has juggled the group with his solo work ever since.

“We assumed it would do well because we have a great loyal fan base, but nobody could have predicted ultimately what would have happened,” Gill says. “It really went beyond anybody’s expectations. It was spectacular.”

He thinks the biographical, scripted miniseries went over well because of its warts-and-all approach.

“The information was 100 percent accurate,” he says. “It was about being honest and putting it out there. It wasn’t done to make us look like superheroes. This is our journey, and people could relate.”

Baring themselves came easily enough, he says, because the group members are all in a different place from where they were portrayed in the miniseries.

“There’s so much more that we’ve gone through,” Gill says. “That’s just a little piece of the journey. There’s so much more.”
Gill was played by rising R&B singer Luke James. “I thought he did an incredible job. He really nailed the essence of me — embodied me. We met once or twice, and he called me a couple times. I couldn’t tell him enough that he nailed it.”

Gill wasn’t around much during the making of “The New Edition Story,” nor was he present during its promotion. He says he was absent because he had been tending to his ailing mother in his native Washington, D.C.
He didn’t see the finished product until it aired on TV.

“I was a little disturbed by that,” he says. “This was my life story, too. No one made an effort for me to see what was made. If I saw something that wasn’t accurate or I wasn’t comfortable with, I didn’t have an opportunity to say anything. It had me on pins and needles.”

Gill says New Edition will pick up on the momentum surrounding the miniseries with a tour. Details of the tour are being worked out, and he hopes it will launch in late summer. All of the group’s members — Ralph Tresvant, Michael Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe, Ricky Bell and even Bobby Brown — will be aboard, Gill says.

But first up is Gill’s role in Charlie Wilson’s “In It To Win It” tour coming Friday night to Chaifetz Arena. Fantasia is also on the bill.

“Uncle (Charlie Wilson, as he’s often known) called me last summer and asked, ‘Are you too big to come out on the road with Uncle?’ and I said, ‘What time are we going? When are we leaving?’”

The “My My My” singer is also still actively promoting his latest solo album, “Game Changer” (2014), with the single “This One’s for Me and You,” which includes New Edition. “I wanted them to be on the song, and I put them on there, and it did extremely well,” Gill says.

The current single from the set is “5000 Miles” with Jaheim.

Gill says his goal for the album was to create something where “you could listen to the album and never touch the button. You don’t have to skip anything. And I think I accomplished that mission. ... This is grown-folks stuff. I didn’t try to be trendy.”
