Why was Janet Jackson's Superbowl boob slip such a serious issue?

I remember all the fuss about it....it was funny.
But I also think it was intentional. Just for fun.

I didn't find it funny at all. It was very bad timing for MJ case & I just don't think Janet would have done it on purpose. I do think you are most likely correct that it was intentional, but only on Justin Timberlake's part, imo. I remember Janet's apology & I am glad she made it even though she said she regretted it on the Oprah show. I found her very sincere & honest. Here is her interview on Oprah:

It happened so fast..I hardly even noticed it...such a big deal is made out of small things.

I agree. It did happen so fast and was hardly noticable. I was shocked the next day when it was made into a huge deal. It was obviously not planned, because there are shots of Janet looking humiliated right afterwards. I think it was part of the conspiracy to bring the family down, as this was around the time of the Bashir interview and the fiasco that followed.

He's a complete asshole for putting all the blame on Janet. Hell, he's the one who pulls her bra off in the first place! I remember this interview and was no longer a fan of his for how he treated Janet. Of course the media was on his side, because they wanted to make him into the new King of Pop.

Okay, lets for arguements sake, Justin was only supposed to pull of the fabric just to reveal her bra? why did Janet need to go there? why was that pasty on her breast if something was not to be revealed? whatever the 'plan' it got out of control and if she was'nt determined to push her sexy side once more, none of this would've happened.

It wasn't a pasty, it was a nipple ring. Janet has had her nipple pierced since the Velvet Rope album. The media just lied and said it was a pasty and the world believed it.

No, it wasn't intentional, it was misfortunate accident. I didn't notice when it happened, because I remember camera zoomed out instantly. But media made a big hoopla out of it. I felt bad for Janet, public started attacking her, and it costed her a lot of humiliations. Janet is a legend, she was in her late 30' with a great career track, but was treated very badly, it was unfair. She didn't needed publicity like this. Having nipple ring doesn't mean a thing. If she wanted to reveal her tits, she would pose for playboy, not making fool out of herself.
