When I read this I thought that another explanation of MJ not wearing tape on his middle finger is that it is also considered the "heart" finger (dedo corazón, in Spanish).
Maybe he didn't cover it so he would "perform with his unveiled heart" to the world. . . . Just a crazy thought that came to my mind.

Hmm, I remember either hearing or reading about it...like, on the set of 'smooth criminal' or moonwalker he showed up on set with the tape and someone asked about it.....

Yup, I believe what happened was the director asked Michael why he had band aids and he responded "It helps my character."
For me I always thought he did it because of his Vitiligo..
Another reason I've many times is when he dances it accentuates the movements of him even more.
