Yeah, the original album mixes have never been used again for any international release, just on some Japanese pressings and some other country I can't remember right now.
The mixes are the 1988 edits.
The mixing of "Fly Away" has also been enhanced. It sounds even better now, listen to the very last seconds e.g., you can now hear Michael's vocals there. They didn't just turn up the volume, they did some proper mixing.
I think why so many love it and puts it above SC is because it is new. Dont get me wrong, i love al capone but in no way is it better than SC. Smooth criminal is a masterpiece. Its like a movie, a beginning a middle and an end. Al Capone sounds very 80's and im sure mj was well aware of that. Just like the billie jean demo, it sounded very dated and mj always knew what he wanted.
Ive even seen people go so far as to call it their favourite number 1 song. Wow, so you think an old unfinished demo is better than all the released songs michael spent years perfecting?..
Yeah i agree, give it a couple of months, and everyone will realize smooth criminal is in another league that hasn't already. I remember the first time i sat down to Billie Jean, and it blew me away to a level no other uptempo song has ever come close to, i just thought i was listening to the catchiest thing possible for humans to ever create, i actually got emotional, because i couldn't understand how it was possible to create such an insanely infectious song, it remains the only dance track to this day that's made me emotional, because it's so good. Similar story with SC, but not quite to that level. But Al Capone is infectious too, but the feeling it gave me isn't close to back then. Don't compare AC with that worn out 10,000 times played round your mind SC, cast your mind back that first time you heard SC, and how it made you feel. Don't get me wrong it's awesome if people are digging Al Capone, i love it too, but try and think before toppling the almighty SC, remember MJ will have thought it was loads better than AC, and right for Bad, and he had the advantage of hearing them both fresh to him.
Yes, as I said in another BAD 25 thread here (there are too many, lol), it's a new remaster and this time it's really great. Most tracks sound the same but "Just Good Friends", "Liberian Girl", "Speed Demon" and "Fly Away" are really an improvement.
Vinyl does not have anything to do with quality or master. The original 1987 master is also available on CD, the 2001 remaster is also available on Vinyl. The "Vinyl = better quality" is an urban legend. An audiophile master on CD always kills any Vinyl in terms of sonic perfection and sound quality. The 2001 remaster was a pure loudness master, this 2012 remaster here is more audiophile.
Are the tapes lost?(except "Je ne veux pas la fin de nous" which was restored from a Vinyl transfer).
Man in the Mirror was magic (that wasn't sung live right?)
