Was this MJ's new peak when it comes to his vocals?

Did MJ reach a new peak with his vocal abilities right before the end?

Based on what? The only songs which sound remotely personal are Unbreakable and perhaps Speechless. And I suppose The Lost Children is very sincere. But stuff like Heartbreaker, Invincible, YRMW... they're good pop songs but they could be done by anyone...

it doesn't matter if they can be done by anyone. the lyrics are extremely personal. you just have to listen to them. MJ may have collaborated on many of the Invincible songs with other people (he collaborated with others on Dangerous, as well -- he only wrote 4 songs on that album all by himself, as opposed to 2 on Invincible) but he wrote almost 99% of the lyrics himself on Invincible. I believe a lot of Invincible is about his failed marriage to Lisa Presley and his life in general. all in all, it sounds pretty personal to me.

I don't think it will be better, nor worse. It will just be different. More mature but equally great.
The voice has its beauty in any age.

After all the shit he'd been through in 93, the allegations, the addiction to painkillers, the media persecution... don't you think it would've looked kinda weird to come back with just another album of pop songs? What's wrong with singing about your problems? He had shit that he needed to deal with and he did so through his music. HIStory displays a far more authentic and honest side to Michael's psyche than anything he's done before or since.

I guess it depends what you're after from an artist. I love it when an artist wears their heart on their sleeve and gets all deep and autobiographical. But that's just me.

I was actually very disappointed when Invincible dropped in 2001... after such intensely personal songs like Morphine, SIM, TDCAU etc, hearing him do generic R&B fillers like Heartbreaker and such like was kind of a step backwards for Michael, artistically.

Read my post above yours and you have my reason.

when you talk about HIStory album why you just think about its lyrics and context(though it's the best thing about it)?? you think like MJ haters think or those who're just looking for music to dance and have fun, MJ's music isn't just about that

HIStory album is when MJ was at his peak FACT

Michael was at his peak during HIStory because he wrote more personal lyrics than before? I'm not even gonna answer to that.

Theres some deluded people in this thread.

Fact!

Destiny: 2/10
Trimph: 3/10
Victory: 4/10
Bad: 4/10
Dangerous: 5/10
HIStory: 8/10
This Is It: 5/10

Abviously, I've bein' sarcastic lol.

Michael's vocal peak was 1977 thru 1982 vocally. Especially on the fast dance tracks. It seemed as he got older on the faster tracks he didn't sound as smooth or as clear but still sounded great once his voice slowed down on slower tracks to Mid-Tempo tracks.

His best music in my opinion was Off the Wall, Triumph, Thriller. His voice on dance tracks back then was catchy even to a MJ hater.

I think Michael was wearing his heart on his sleeve in 2001. He was just in a different place. Often times when an artist is going through really difficult times, there songs are more raw, desperate, angsty, intense, a reflection of inner turmoil. Michael was in a more settled state of mind 2001 and his songs reflect that. But they are just as personal.

High five :D

I have been impressed by Michaels vocals from the footage we've seen. and what I heard outside 'THE FORUM' in L.A.. he always sounds good but in early 2000's he went through a bit of a nasaly sound, which seemingly has gone away.. I even heard it a bit in 'Hold My Hand'..

All I can say, I have been impressed

Human Nature has blown me away. I think it's better than the album version honestly.

Someone that actually knows something! You are goddamn right!

I can't pick any of Michael's different vocals, Michael's voice is just sheer magic to me, I am just happy to be able to hear his voice and I love each and every way he sang from J5 to TII, all unique and beautiful, words just can't describe it.

Haven't heard enough to judge properly. All we've ever gotten in recent years is a little snippet of something here or there, or some J5 material sung live.

But I love the arrangements in the This Is It clips, and we'll probably know better after the movie hits.

his vocals were sounding fantastic in the bits we've heard already. I wish Sony had used those rehearsal recordings for the THIS IS IT album.

Nope that crown goes to the Victory Tour. I´ve compared for many years now each Victory vocal performance with the Bad performance when MJ is singing of course the same song and in 87% the Victory performance wins.

For example

Beat it Victory is much better than Beat it Bad
Human Nature Victory is better than Bad
This place Hotel Victory much better than the Bad Tour vocal

I agree as far as his all over vocal. as for this poll I do think from what i've heard Michael seems great! although I want to hear more by watching the movie.

From what we've seen his voice is really incredible. But I just have always loved his voice, to me it's senseless to pick out his vocal peak, probably that's just because I just love his voice and the way it is is just how it goes. He does seem to have a real power to his voice in the TII clips, which is just mindblowing!

it's stupid to say he was at his vocal peak at 50 years old with severe lung problems
he sounded at his best during victory/bad tour, anybody who doesn't hear that are just hearing what they want to hear

Maybe you should put Triumph Tour up there too, if you now have heard anything from it...

it actually requires more talent to hit those notes with a rough, scratchy, you can hear the flem rattling in the back of his throat, than it requires to sing in a sonft smooth voice.

He got more talented vocally as he got older which is why we got so much more diversity from his voice as he got older.

when he was younger he basically had two voices. high pitched nasally, and high pitched girly. but when he got older? we had high and low pitch of nasal, girly, manly, boyish, deep and basy, screaming, growling, and just a really wide variety, with way more emotion than he ever had at a younger age.
