NEW YORK, Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- VH1 goes back to its music roots and revisits the age-old question: "Who is the greatest music artist for all time?" Determined by a poll of well-known music artists and music experts in the industry, VH1 will reveal this definitive (and sure-to-be highly controversial) list declaring who is the greatest of the great. Hosted by Jim Shearer (VH1's "Top 20 Video Countdown"), the 4-night special, VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of All Time," premieres Monday, September 6 at 10/9c with a 2-hour premiere.

This definitive countdown covers all genres of music – from rock to pop to rap to metal – to answer who is worthy to possess the title as "the greatest music artist of all time." Over the 200 musicians including Alicia Keys, Ozzy Osbourne, Sean "Diddy" Combs, Iggy Pop, Nas, Rob Halford (Judas Priest), Geddy Lee (Rush), Alex Lifeson (Rush), Michael Diamond (Beastie Boys), Daryl Hall, John Oates, Noel Gallagher (Oasis), Gene Simmons (KISS), Adam Levine (Maroon Five), 50 Cent, Nelly Furtado, Mandy Moore, Carrie Underwood, Adam Clayton (U2) and many more voted on who they believe deserves this highly coveted title.

In 1998, VH1 launched the same list as the channel's first countdown special; however; much has changed since the dawn of the new millennium. VH1 puts this debate up for a vote again to see which rock pioneers still matter and which new acts rate in the age of download-to-own music and ever-changing pop culture. The countdown will include special, rarely-seen performance footage along with brand new, totally original interviews with music's most famous faces including interviews by Adele, Backstreet Boys, Brandy, Bret Michaels, Chris Daughtry, Hall & Oates, Keane, Ozzy Osbourne, Ray J, Sheryl Crow, Usher, Whitney Houston and many more.

VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of All Time" has changed since its first poll in 1998. Some notable changes include:
Michael Jackson was number 40 in the 1998 poll; however, in the current list Jackson is in the top 5.

Artists from the 1960s and 1970s are still relevant with today's artists. Younger musicians like Adam Levine, Jason Mraz, Chris Daughtry and Carrie Underwood cast votes for classic acts like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and Stevie Wonder.

Contemporary artists like Beyonce, Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, Eminem, Coldplay and Green Day are in the Top 100. However, current headliners Lady Gaga, Kanye West, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Lil' Wayne and The White Stripes failed to make the cut.

The poll reflects changing tastes. The list features over 30 artists who did not make the cut in 1998 including ABBA, Journey, Hall and Oates, Rush, George Michael, Mariah Carey, Sade and Cheap Trick.

The 1998 list included very few Hard Rock artists. This time, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Metallica, Judas Priest and Def Leppard made the list.

The 1998 list ignored Hip Hop entirely. Now Jay-Z, OutKast, Run-DMC, Public Enemy, Tupac Shakur, Notorious B.I.G., LL Cool J and N.W.A. are in the top 100. However no hip hop artist broke the top 40. Jay-Z was highest at #47.

TheGreatest.VH1.com will have exclusive extras including interviews and commentary. Additionally, online visitors will be able to participate by using VH1's voting tool that allows users to pick their favorite artists, weigh in their opinions and socially broadcast their take on the list through Twitter.com and Facebook.com.

Interesting, ah so they do the Top 5 in alphabetical order to keep it a surprise right?

This is how I'd sort the top 5 :D

1. Michael Jackson
2. Bob Dylan
3. The Beatles
4. Rolling Stones
5. Led Zeppelin

Glad to see MJ in the top five and Elvis not.

Are they saying that numbers 6-11 are the only ones in their official ranking and everybody below them is just in random order for now?

It's kinda confusing because it says "6-11, ranked" but it also says...

If it's the real list then I just wanna point out that Jay-Z ranking well above Biggie, Eminem, and 2Pac is absurd. I like Jay-Z but I have never been able to wrap my head around the idea that he is the greatest of all-time in the rap industry.

^ I actually think that it might be a typo and it should be 6-100, not sure

I also agree 100% Grand Master..Those three rappers you mentioned are easily the best rappers ever (Personally, I'd add Nas into that conversation as well). I don't get why Jay Z is ahead of them either.

^ I agree about Nas but I wouldn't really expect him to rank highly on a list like this anyway, just because he's so much lower than the others in mainstream recognition. It's VH1.

... and I just noticed Justin Timberlake is number 66 lmao. I'm still happy MJ is in the top five, but it's kinda diminished with the knowledge that this list is idiotic.

^ That's true, Nas some great albums and even though Illmatic is often at the top of of a lot Rap lists, he never really became a mainstream rapper like the others did..Jay Z does have the whole mainstream thing going on though, and even being married to Beyonce kind of adds that too..I hope that's not why he's on the list though

I've never really gotten into Jay Z for some reason, not sure why,but he's not on my list of Top 5 rappers of all time, is he for you?

I don't really have a top five, but he's amongst the rappers I most listen to. I still recognize that his placement here is odd though. He was #1 in MTV's list of greatest rappers of all-time too, which also had me scratching my head. He's not the most skilled nor is he the overall highest selling. I think he's had the most #1 albums, but still. Doesn't make you the G.O.A.T in my opinion.

justin timberlake really? lol
MJ SHOULD BE NUMBER ONE but then again im biased when it comes to m.j haha
but the list isnt too shabby :)

^ he might be #1. The top five are just in alphabetical order right now.

... and Beyonce #52? Whatever lol....

I never understand these lists. Why don't they just call it what it really is, like the acts that sell a lot and are known by the general public? Jay-Z, Green Day, and Nirvana is on the list but Sun Ra, James Jamerson, and B.B. King aren't. It's not the "greatest music artists", just a list of pop culture acts.

wait wait wait justin timberlake over otis redding, bee gees, whitney houston and little richard and jay z over tupac biggie and no celion dion and i think the jacksons and were snubbed but i guess like duran duran said these are artists that majority of the general public and now the new generation listen to the most

well this is VH1. What did you expect?

 music is still alive and kicking, you just need to know where to look ;)
I look in the used record stores, that's good enough for me. I find good out of print stuff there.

It shouldn't, but this VH1 thing bugs me. I can accept better all of MJ's "new" fans in the general public since his death. Some really are just becoming acquainted with the scope of his work. But the VH1 list being composed of "well known music artists and music experts", and for these so called pros to have EVER had Michael at 40 still strikes a nerve. So while I'm glad he's FINALLY being acknowledged in the top 5 by his industry as he always should have been, it annoys me (even though it gratifies me).

How the hell is Jay-Z better than Tupac, Biggie or NWA?! Also, although I like some of these current artists, I don't see how current artists like Alicia Keys or Justin Timberlake are already considered "great".

Top 2 on the list:

#1: The Beatles
#2: Michael Jackson

I'm baffled as well. There's no reason at any time that MJ should have been ranked so low @ # 40, but i'm guessing the people who compile these lists don't care much for pop music. Still, MJ is an artist who has transcended all barriers in music and culture in many ways. I will never understand why he was only #40 before. A joke really.

were there different music experts particpating then the one in 1998, like p. diddy, many moore, and jennifer lopez were involved in this vh1 list

^^^^Puff Daddy is only an expert in pimping and ripping off his acts and then abandoning them, lol. He doesn't do music. He has staff producers & writers working for him and Puffy takes the credit and money.

Im trying to figure out how Beyonce made the list over Janet

this is what I posted over at VH1's blog:

Michael Jackson should have been number 1. For goodness sakes, he has the biggest selling album of ALL TIME…..that is the foundation of artistry…ALBUMS…and Michael did it best. Let’s not even start on how many times he is in the Guinness Book of World Records for his other musical accomplishments. MICHAEL JACKSON IS THE QUINTESSENTIAL ARTIST OF ALL TIME…..The Beatles aren’t even on the same level. Matter of fact, they should have given MJ the #1 and #2 spots…..the rest can start at #3!

I'm pissed that Patsy Cline didn't make it on the list, if Johnny Cash was on it she should have been on it. I'm also shocked that Cher wasn't included.

Im trying to figure out how Beyonce made the list over Janet

Because the list is FIXED and VH1 only cares about popularity not presenting the real legends. I cant believe they would put her as well as Green Day, Jay Z, Outkast, Alicia Keys on a list OVER Sam Cooke and Smokey Robinson like seriously WTFFF????

All the 70s and 80s kids are all grown up so, in time that list will continue to change. Then, when the baby boomers die out there is a good chance The Beatles won't be #1 anymore.

Yeah, they will vote Lil' Wayne number 1. :hysterical:

I really like this greatest artists of all-time list but 1 thing where's janet on that list I only see Beyonce, Mariah, or arists MJ & some others Alicia Keys, Justin Timberlake... & so many other artists....
