Michael Jackson's Thriller - The World's Best-Selling Album of All Time - Is Back on The Top of America's Charts!!!

Last update: 10:05 a.m. EST Nov. 7, 2008
NEW YORK, Nov 07, 2008 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Coast-To-Coast Zombie Dance Tributes & Halloween Sales Frenzy Drive 25th Anniversary Edition of Thriller To #1 On The Billboard Catalog Albums Chart & #1 On iTunes
Michael Jackson's Thriller, the world's top-selling album of all time, is back at the top of the charts this week following a Halloween-inspired surge in sales and coast-to-coast zombie dance tributes to the album.
The Legacy Recordings' 25th Anniversary CD/DVD edition of Thriller has rocketed back into the #1 slot on the Billboard Catalog Albums chart.
A specially-priced Halloween digital edition of the standard Thriller album on iTunes, bundled with a bonus video of the award-winning Thriller zombie music clip, spent much of the week at #1 before settling in as iTune's #2 album of the week (topped only by John Legend's Evolver). More than 34,000 Thriller ringtones were sold during the same week.
A perennial best-seller since its original release in November 1982, Thriller, and Michael Jackson's iconic zombie dance music video, have, over the past quarter century, launched thousands of Thriller-themed events while inspiring countless zombie-based costumes for Halloween and other spooky occasions. A group of hardcore Thriller "grisly ghouls" gathered at Madame Tussauds wax museum in Times Square this past October to successfully break the Guinness World Record for most "zombies" dancing the signature choreography from Michael's video in a single location. The record-shattering Thriller Dance Re-enactment was previewed in a USA Today Lifeline item (October 27, 2008) and covered in depth in the Halloween editions of both the New York Post and the New York Daily News. Zombie-attired Thriller fans gathered en masse to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the album at Greenwich Village's annual Halloween Parade.
Outside the Big Apple Thriller events, Miami's hot spot Opium Garden hosted an official Michael Jackson Thriller 25 Halloween bash highlighted by Live in Color, an MTV dance crew, performing the Thriller zombie dance. Zombies also descended on the Fox Network's "Morning Show with Mike and Juliet" as well as "The View," where lucky audience members were given complimentary copies of Thriller 25.
Released in February 2008, Thriller 25 -- the newly-expanded deluxe 25th anniversary edition of Michael Jackson's Thriller, the world's best-selling album of all-time -- became America's #2 Top-Selling Album more than a quarter century after the album's original release. One of the hottest albums of 2008, Thriller 25 rocketed into the Top 5 (or better) in a variety of territories across the planet following its worldwide release the week of February 11 while entering the Billboard Top Pop Catalog chart at #1.
With more than two million copies of Thriller 25 sold around the world the new edition of Michael Jackson's classic collection hit #1 in France; #1 in Belgium; #2 in Germany; #2 in Australia; #2 in the Netherlands; #2 in Norway (Thriller's highest position ever in that country); #2 in Sweden; #2 in Switzerland; #3 in the UK; #3 in Denmark; #3 in New Zealand; #4 in Spain; #5 in Austria; #5 in Ireland; #6 in the Czech Republic; and #6 in Italy.
Global response to the release of Thriller 25, the newly expanded deluxe 25th anniversary edition of Michael Jackson's Thriller, the world's top-selling album of all-time, reached a fever pitch across the planet with surprise hit singles, a 29-episode "ThrillerCast" podcast series, the premiere of the "Thrillicious" Sobe Life Water ad campaign at the Super Bowl, the presentation of a Lifetime Achievement Award to Michael Jackson at the NRJ Music Awards at Cannes and a host of events and surprises.
The Michael Jackson Thriller 25th anniversary celebration runs throughout 2008 with a multi-faceted global marketing campaign featuring high-profile television, radio and online events around the world and the major re-launch of Michael's official website, www.michaeljackson.com
Originally released in the US on November 30, 1982 by Epic Records, Thriller, Michael Jackson's sixth solo album and second with producer Quincy Jones, first entered the Billboard Top 200 album chart at #11 in December 1982. The original Thriller went on to spend an astounding 80 consecutive weeks in the American Top 10, 37 of those at #1, while making history as the first and only record to be America's top-selling album two years running (1983 and 1984). Thriller has been certified 27x platinum by the RIAA, giving it Double Diamond Award status in the US. In 1985, the Guinness Book of Records named Thriller the Best Selling Album of All Time, an achievement which remains unsurpassed to this day.

Only Michael Jackson can do this!!! :agree:

:punk::punk::punk::punk:

This is such wonderful news, amazing to think Thriller is still No.1 after 25yrs. There is only one man who could do that, and thats Mr Michael Jackson.
Well done Michael, love ya foreva

It's Thriller night, duh, lol. :zombie:

Of course it will come back on top in America. Don't act surprised. :tease:

This is just amazing! Michael deserves the best.

I am tiered of those journalists who use the term “fallen star”, can they just do their home work!!

Thanks for the news! :)

Come on, man, Maxxx said it best: the back catalog ALWAYS sells as long as you have the right promotion. Least Sony is smart to boost it at the time of Halloween.

Congratulations michael!!! :)
We all os happy for u :)

Its great to see "thiller" kicking ass once again! :)

I bet the media never saw this coming!!!!
BEAT THAT MEDIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

People don't you realize how amazing this is after 25 years this album still is selling and does better in selling then the average cd's that come out now in the music industry. Wow an album that is 25 years has so much potential and we as fans should be celebrating at such an accomplishment. These rappers and so called singers these days can't even surpass this accomplishment. Down the road in 25 years from now their album won't even be remembered or see the light of day, but I can tell you this much that in 25 years "Thriller" will be remembered and celebrated as we celebrate it today.

Michael is truly a living legend and a genuis and these people need to stop and think of what sucess he still has after all these years. I can tell you this much when the King of Pop comes back with his new album people will be lining up the streets just to get this long awaited album. The man still has it no matter what has been happening the last 15 years. He will show the world once again that he has always been here and has never left (damn media screwing with our minds).

I am from the era of "Thrillermainia" and "Michaelmainia" so that is why I am speaking my mind about this wonderful thing that is happening right now with "Thriller". Wow! It is just truly amazing that Michael does things in the music buisness without lefting a finger and these people call him a has been.

Sorry to keep going and going.

Amazing! :punk:

There isn't another artist in the history of music that could put an album back at the top of the charts 25 years after it was released. Considering it has not been re-released but has been in the shops for all this time it is amazing.

And why was Paul (misery guts) McCartney awarded a ledgend award at the MTV awards, Michael is the ultimate music legend.

i don't know what ur apologizing for lol.mm hmm it's worth it to step back to realize the gravity of this situation. every holiday, many artists are part of an atmosphere, where everybody buys perennial stuff to celibrate. but Halloween has officially become a holiday for one artist. i think we oughta think about that for a moment. how big that is. you can look forward, every year to celebrating a season for just one artist. think about that. and..yes...the sales...the success that will continue with a life of its own. there is no hype big enough to consider the bigness of all this. and the growing legend of the King. Michael Jackson.:)

Somebody finally knocked Pink Floyd's "Dark Side Of The Moon" off, lol.

lol duran

I just told my brother this news before and he is totally amazed!
hes like "how the heck can a album from 25yrs ago be back?!!! that cool! " :)

That is an amazing accomplishment. The only other musical 'feat' that might be comparable would be the performance in the charts of the song White Christmas by Irving Berlin, sung by Bing Crosby in 1942. It's the best selling single all time. It had three separate runs at the top of the charts. Holiday-related, it topped the charts in 1942 (for eleven weeks!,) and then came back again to top the charts in 1946 and 1947, around Christmas time. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, it sold 100 million copies, all totaled. I guess people needed a comforting song during WW2, and that feeling of comfort endured...

Congrats MJ!

I guess a lot of peeps (including me) agree with MJ; that Halloween and Thriller fit each other like a glove. Here's the exact quote:

"I always thought Halloween and 'Thriller' fit each other like a glove." - Michael Jackson

Maybe he could come up with a cool song and video featuring trees for Arbor Day. Or maybe a song and vid about a groundhog? :wild:

hey now that isn't a bad idea!!!! :toofunny:
