Michael Jackson Memorial: A Statement From “The Few”
In the last 48 hours, myself and a few friends who gathered at the o2 on Monday 13th July 2009, have received a number of messages, ranging from upset, to damn right rude in relation to the events that took place on the day in memory of Michael Jackson.
Before I continue, I would like to say that I have been a Michael Jackson fan since I was born. My first ever CD purchase was Earth Song, as a present to my adopted mother, and I was in tears all night the day Michael died, which contributed towards me losing my job (I worked nights at the time). I’m also a socialist, which means I don’t agree with the media’s use of things, capitalism, or dictators.
Someone started by quoting the word vigil for me at the start of their message. The meaning is:
a watch or a period of watchful attention maintained at night or at other times (Source: Dictionary.com)
Although it implys that it’s a period spent “watching” someone, it doesn’t explictly explain how. Checking in the thesaurus, you get the words, awareness, survelance, guard, and patrol….
Other people say the 13th July for them was a memorial. The definition for memorial is
something designed to preserve the memory of a person, event, etc., as a monument or a holiday (Source: Dictionary.com)
Again. No eplicit instuctions here.
What i’m getting at is that everyone has different interpretations of words. Different meanings, different thoughts on how things should be. In much the same way people would have for songs, books poems etc. So obviously there are different menings as to what should have gone on on Monday.
At this point I would like to make a few things VERY clear
-Myself, nor my friends claimed to be, or ever implied that we were the orgonisers
-We on a number of occasions made references to the orgonisers, thanked them for their work and tried to get them involved
-We did not want to hog media attention. In fact I only spoke to the media on 2 occasions, and on both times, I had a microphone shoved in front of my mouth
-We never felt like we were dis-respecting Michael, nor would hve wanted too.
-It was individuals and groups, not us, who wished to perform, and we only co-ordinated things to try and make it happen
-We never told anyone what they should or shouldn’t have been doing
-We respected the wishes of anyone who wanted to pay their respects alone in peace
-There were 3 events going on at once by the evening
-The stage became the performance area as it was raised. We had o2 security threatening to kick everyone out if people kept on swamping the stage cause of health and safety.
It’s funny isn’t it how some people can be really happy, and others really angry over the same thing. For those who were upset, I apologise. I’m not going to be my usual sarcastic self, and I just hope you understand that I was just trying to help other people, and that I never wanted to have my actions taken the wrong way. The only reason I had a megaphone in the first place is as I have a going away bag carrying my IPod, speaker, headphones, a good book, and a megaphone. The latter I’ve carried since I had to help out on 7/7 (I was on the train behind the exploded one, and I’m a Red Cross volunteer) and the lil thing may have saved a number of lives, so I carry it just in case… It was origionally being used as a speaker, until the majority of people were asking for people to sing dance, etc etc, and I just went with the flow.
A few things though. Although I’m happy to discuss this with anyone, one of my friends has become deeply upset at the person who sent them “Hate Mail” to their personal inbox. We may have disagreements, but there’s a limit to how to vent that. Please, if you have any issues you want to vent, send them to me.
fisicouk@gmail.com or call me on 07727912944. I also think that those who go and say we were disrespecting Michael are also a bit over the top. When you look at the man who said he used to cry because of all the people saying bad things about him, I’m sure he would want people to remember the best thingss about him. His dancing, singing, and his community of loyal fans. I’ve not deleted a single post anywhere, mainly as I’m not an admin to the group, and I don’t believe in censorship. And also, we know the MJJC has 16K+ members. We’re not here to start a war. Make Love Not War.
If I hurt or offended you I’m sorry. If I angered you, I apologise. If I helped you, I’m glad to be of service.
Wishing you ALL a happy evening
Wil Vincent
