The Michael Jackson Fan Handbook, First Post Updated

What the hell is this?
you took this thread all wrong didn't you ? Its advice the fan hand book. I think it is an invaluable thread ..
"Rules of the fandom?!" So if I haven't read Dancing The Dream then I'm not a real fan?
its a suggestion ..isn't it
If I listen to Smooth Criminal before Dirty Diana then I'm going to be cast out?

We really need to stop with the gatekeeping. Especially preemptive gatekeeping. You're not a better fan than anybody else. All you're doing is giving MJ fans a bad name by being so unwelcoming.
read it again Richard this time without the steam blowing out your ears.

Ok, lets get back to this after the little break of forum downtime :)

So another thing fans should know is Who Is A Reputable Source of Information.

Lets start with the basics, this forum. One of the easiest ways is by looking at the join dates of members, which is listed on everyone's profile. While I know there are some people who were members and have joined, the majority of OG members, people who were active in the online fan communities when Michael was alive have their original join date on their profile. 2007, 2008, 2009 were when the online community was very active, and MJJC was one of the biggest, most active forums. Everyone joined here, even if they didnt post. So look at peoples profiles, and if they have a join date before 2010, it means they were here when Michael was alive.

This is important, as when Michael was alive, the fan community was very active but a lot smaller. Huge amounts of information was known and shared in the fan community that was not known by casual fans and the general public.

So who else is a reputable source of information and how do you figure out which is genuine information based in fact and which is just internet speculation.
🙄

My join date on here is after Michael's death. It means I registered with this site then. It does not mean I wasn't "active in the online community" or a fan before then.

This is just gatekeeping.

Oh no a movie is coming out. Interest might occur in the MJ fandom.

People might come on the forum and just know Billie Jean and Thriller.

Best make up a bunch of clique like rules.

Let people listen to Michael's music when and how they would like to.

I find it really interesting how something good, happy and informative, something which helps people learn about Michael, the sharing of knowlede is being turned into an attack and negative. Almost like people have an agenda to only want a certain type of topics and talk around here. Or maybe those that go on the attack do so because they are not really fans and can not relate to normal ordinary fan conversations we used to have when Michael was alive.

Back to the business, updating the Michael Jackson Fan Handbook.

I created a separate there here The Fake Photos Thread but it needs to be included here too.

This is something which used to be on other forums, so I'm bringing it back to MJCC.

Fake and digitally altered photos are wrong. They destroy Michaels history and confuse the fan community. Fans need to know which is a real photo of Michael, so that they can know and understand the person he was.

Some examples of fake photos

The real photo is Lisa Maria Presley and Nicolas Cage
The photo of Michael is from the court case with Marcel Avarm in relation to the cancelled Millennium concerts, Santa Barbara Court November 2002

Another problem is those apps that people use to restore low quality pictures. The resulting pictures appear to be higher quality, so they are shared more than the original pictures, but the problem is that those apps can't restore the pictures without altering Michael's facial features. For people who have been fans for a long time, it's easy to immediately recognize those altered pictures, because we know Michael's face so well that we can notice the small differences, like the shape of his teeth or his nose being different. But I fear new fans won't know what the real Michael Jackson actually looked like if they only see those altered pictures. I fear that with time, the original low quality pictures will disappear as they are replaced by those badly restored pictures.

Yes exactly, the real Michael being lost because people are "fixing him" and making him into what they want him to be, not the person he was.

I don't think it's because they want to fix him, they just want to fix the pictures because they are low quality, but the process unintentionally messes up Michael's real facial features and I don't think they notice because they are not familiar enough yet with Michael's face to notice the small differences. If people always posted the original picture along with the "restored" picture it wouldn't bother me so much, but the fact that the altered picture gets shared while the original picture disappears is really worrisome.

How To Make Our Community A Better Place

I put this in a separate thread, but its good to have it here too. Anyone else have suggestions? :)
  • Be careful of oversharing personal information like your age and where you live, where you go to school, what year you are in, what you do after school, really anything that could be used to find you in real life.
  • This website has a huge archive, use the search function if you have a thought or question about Michael. Look for answers in this website before posting a thread. Its great to ask questions, but know the basics about Michael before creating threads
  • Unfortunately SPAM does get through, theres no need to reply to it, just hit the report button and the mods will take care of it.

How To Make Our Community A Better Place

If you see a thread and your first thought is omg, that dosnt seem right, or it seems to be negative or it seems to be a bit off, look at the persons join date. Look at the persons other posts on the forum. Many people will join here to troll. So what's a troll?

Trolling is when someone posts or comments online to 'bait' people, which means deliberately provoking an argument or emotional reaction. They know what they are posting will cause offence and they post to deliberately disrupt the community. Trolls thrive on the passionate back and forth that many fans have. The passionate back and forth is their oxygen. By ignoring them, by not engaging with them, you cut off their oxygen. When they see that what they say is having no effect they will leave. They have nothing informative, helpful, happy, nice things to contribute so they have no further interest in being here.

Some TV Interviews which are must watch

Michael Jackson Talks ... to Oprah February 1993
Diane Sawyer Primetime Michael Jackson, Lisa Marie Presley June 1995
Barbara Walters 60 Minutes With Michael Jackson September 1997

I haven't read it yet, but im curious as to why his autobiography was reissued
When he died. It had been out of print and they reissued it with a new page at the front. You really should read it. Its ghost written, from audio tapes of interviews with Michael but at the time, it was such an eye opening insight into Michael. I got it when it was first published back in 1988, when I was a young teen. It was one of the first real sources of information I had about Michael and I used to read it over and over for years.

It's everything from the tone, the words used, and just the general feeling behind the idea.

We need to stop differentiating between "real fans", "fake fans", "new fans" and whatever else people have started labelling each other as. And we certainly don't want people saying how we should talk/behave, or what determines a legitimate way to celebrate MJ and his work.

Almost like people have an agenda to only want a certain type of topics and talk around here. Or maybe those that go on the attack do so because they are not really fans and can not relate to normal ordinary fan conversations
You see???

It's a beautiful thread and I wish it could be a prioritized sticky thread. I feel that many of our members are really finding it essential.

Yes, have noticed too .. and having threads like this has almost brought MJJC back to how it once was , in a way...so i really thank you for that moon.

You should note which ones were true friends and which ones stabbed Michael in the back (like Bob Jones).

I did think about that, but it gets complicated , sigh, I'm thinking that for a new to the community person that by just giving the names and the connection , that people would then go and research that person. Im trying to keep it simple, the basics, so not to have information overload :)

Maybe just put in red the names of the people who can't be trusted?

As a new fan of Michael Jackson, I can say the most important thing to do is RESEARCH. I knew about MJ all my life (like everyone of course) but I truly discovered him this year (2024.) As a late fan of MJ, I'd like the future fans to know that MJ was not only an amazing musician, performer, dancer, etc. but also a kind man with a pure soul.

I read SO MUCH about him in the past months, I feel like I missed the great opportunity to be in the same boat as the older fans. I'd like the future fans to know about all his charity works, the sick kids going to Neverland, all the documentaries and books about him, etc. His song ''We Are the World'' why he wrote this song, the interviews, etc. His generosity had no limits and this is what melted my heart the most.

I believed almost everything that I heard in the news about him when I was younger (2000/2010) and when I did research and watched a lot of videos about him, everything changed. Hope that those people will learn about him before making judgments like I did in the past. He gave so much love and I think he deserved the same thing, even if he is not here anymore.
