Ngl, I don't necessarily understand this article, lol. They list $600m as if that's all the money Michael earned in the year but, as you say, there is the musical. There's the Cirque show, there's record sales, streams, royalties etc. Obviously the $600m is the biggest chunk of his earnings for the year but the other stuff counts, also. Doesn't it? :unsure:

They mention $6m weekly earnings from the musical (not even counting the Broadway earnings, if I'm reading it right) but don't seem to add that into the total. Financial stuff is not my superpower, lol.

They say this:
"Music catalog income and estate deals remain the top income generators for deceased recording artists."

But that's not the whole story, surely?

It's confusing! 🤷🏽‍♀️
 
Maybe someone needs to get in touch with them and correct those numbers for them! They didn't even mention that the sell of the catalogue is just for half of the catalogue. I don't know if that was just an oversight or if it was done intentionally to make it sound like Queen's catalogue was worth more.

I doubt that would make any difference, tbh. They will know the details of Michael's earnings. They've chosen to write the article in a particular way, I don't think they're going to rewrite it.

The article is all about 'who is at the top of the list this year?' Maybe they just want to keep the story simple. 🤷🏽‍♀️

They did say this:
"Meanwhile, multiple revenue streams keep the dollars moonwalking in, including MJ’s Broadway musical and touring productions. All told, Forbes estimates that Jackson has earned more than $3.3 billion since his death in 2009."

They do mention royalties in some of the other pieces on musicians' after-death earnings. Maybe with Michael they just felt that the $600m is such a huge figure that it dwarfs all the other details of his earnings for the year. With the people further down the list they have to do more explaining as to why that person is even on the list. With Michael they don't need to do that. It's just, 'hey, did you see this $600m Michael Jackson deal?'

It'll be interesting to see what happens next year!
