Billboard 200

140 (191) 281 Thriller
187 (RE) 177 The Essential

I don't understand how Billboard works anymore. How did Off The Wall that sold more than The Essential in the last week didn't make the Billboard 200 this week and The Essential did? Can someone please explain the Billboard rules?

Billboard 200 also includes streams, not just sales. Maybe that makes the difference.

Spotify top artists of 2016. Based on my own following of the monthly stats Spotify published. Not always totally accurate due to certain difficulties of collecting data from Spotify that I won't detail here, but the number of listens in case of major artists (those who never left the Top 100 all over the year - including MJ and Queen AND some who did, but I specifically looked at, eg. the Beatles ) IS definitely accurate.

What kind of a slay!
And I see Queen is out here doing it too!

I swear, with the King still moving physical albums AND doing so good on all the main streaming platforms (streaming now counts toward album sales) he might just snatch the title for best selling solo artist of all time someday.

What do you think Respect.
Could you see that happening eventually, or nah, LOL.
I'm asking you because it seems like you follow these stats pretty closely. :)

Well, it is said Elvis Presley is the best selling solo artist and the number usually claimed for him is 1 billion record sold, which is probably a huge exaggeration, as it is even admitted on Elvis.com. The truth is that especially in his case it is difficult to really tell how many albums he sold since there wasn't yet as accurate tracking of sales as there is now. Also both him and the Beatles (the two artists who are ahead of MJ in overall sales) have much more albums than MJ and that is what really gives them the edge over MJ because on a sales/album basis MJ would be ahead of them.

Oh I forgot to add the streams of the Jacksons and Jackson 5 on Spotify:

Jackson 5 - 43 million
Jacksons - 9 million

I'm glad that someone else recognizes the bolded.
I agree.
When you look at his album output vs his album sales that's impressive as hell.
It's crazy how someone that put out so few albums could find themselves as one of the top three best selling acts of all time.
With Thriller alone he's outsold (or nearly outsold) many artists entire discography.
Not to mention that judging by streaming (a great way to tell what music people really currently listen to) Michael is doing the best at standing the test of time.

Him not being the best selling solo artist of all time doesn't matter to me anyway though.
It's just something that would be cool to see happen one day.:D

Rank - Estimated Sales (m) - TITLE - Artist

85 - 1.27 - NUMBER ONES - Michael Jackson

139 - 1.02 - THRILLER - Michael Jackson

140 - 1.02 - THE ESSENTIAL - Michael Jackson

Impressive numbers so far for MJ in this decade in the USA. I'm hoping that Number Ones can get to 1.5 and Thriller and Essential to both get to 1.2 before the end of the decade. It would also be nice to see Bad, Off The Wall and Xscape top 1 million in sales by the end of the decade although that's quite unlikely for both Off The Wall and Xscape.

Yea! What song is next to hit 100 million?

Music analytics service BuzzAngle Music has published its first-ever yearly report on US music consumption. It’s filled with fascinating statistics on everything from audio streaming (which reached a record high of 250.7 billion songs this year) to trending genres (at 18.2%, hip-hop/rap was the top genre in terms of total song consumption).

Given the continued explosion of streaming, it’s unsurprising that physical albums sales are down 11.7% overall from 2015, but there’s one bright spot for traditional record stores: Vinyl record sales rose 25.9% in 2016.

Must be because of the discount. I wish they would discount albums like Dangerous, HIStory and Invincible because those albums need some time on the charts too.

I swear I saw Dangerous at a discount not too long ago on iTunes!

YouTube - year end. YouTube publishes its weekly charts since February 19, 2016, so it is counted from then until December 29, 2016. MJ is at the great #26 - with only current and/or Latino artists ahead of him. Latino artists have a strong presence in YT's weekly Top 100 due to the platform's popularity in those countries. It does give an interesting insight into what is out there outside of the Anglo-Saxon cultural dominance.

1. Justin Bieber 5.6 billion
2. Rihanna 4.2 billion
3. The Chansmokers 3.5 billion
4. Calvin Harris 3.3 billion
5. Sia 3.3 billion
6. Twenty One Pilots 3.2 billion
7. Romeo Santos 3.2 billion
8. Fifth Harmony 3.1 billion
9. Ariana Grande 3.1 billion
10. Enrique Iglesias 3.1 billion
11. Coldplay 3.1 billion
12. Juan Gabriel 3.0 billion
13. Maluma 3.0 billion
14. Joan Sebastian 2.9 billion
15. Major Lazer 2.8 billion
16. Beyoncé 2.8 billion
17. Shakira 2.8 billion
18. Los Temerarios 2.6 billion
19. Eminem 2.6 billion
20. Adele 2.6 billion
21. Katy Perry 2.5 billion
22. Taylor Swift 2.4 billion
23. One Direction 2.3 billion
24. Linkin Park 2.3 billion
25. Wiz Khalifa 2.3 billion
26. Michael Jackson 2.3 billion
27. Arijit Singh 2.2 billion
28. Banda Sinaloense MS De Sergio Lizárraga 2.1 billion
29. Vicente Fernandez 2.1 billion
30. Maroon 5 2.1 billion
31. Bruno Mars 2.1 billion

46. Metallica 1.7 billion
47. Maná 1.6 billion
48. Skrillex 1.6 billion
49. Shawn Mendes 1.6 billion
50. Chris Brown 1.6 billion

----

A selection of artists also in the Top 100:

51. The Weeknd 1.5 billion

54. Drake 1.5 billion (surprisingly lowly place considering he is #1 on Spotify)

60. Céline Dion 1.4 billion

62. Ricky Martin 1.2 billion
63. Britney Spears 1.2 billion

73. Bee Gees 1.0 billion

82. Queen 0.8 billion

94. Justin Timberlake 0.7 billion

The King continues to reign.

I love how these are WW stats and are up to date.
Streaming is a great way to tell who's really/currently being listened to.

Also I know this might be petty as hell, but I'm dead at the 'New King of Pop' being lower on that list then the man he had supposedly replaced.

Numbers Ones spends 2nd consecutive week at #1 on Polish Charts. I wonder why all of a sudden it got to #1. Anyway, it's great that MJ is still topping the charts many years after his death.

HIStory is currently #64 on Itunes in UK. Surprising.
