So I learnt to bail out early on in an episode and eventually just stopped watching any episode if Red John was mentioned at all. Later on, when he is no longer in the story line, it's fine and I could watch all of it again. All of the last series is fine.

Though the show was entirely mission-of-the-week, RJ was more or less an integral part up until episode 6x08 (it was imo quite odd, that the shows main plot was resolved that much early).

Have you wachted just only the last twenty-something episodes?

It's kinda hard to explain without triggering myself. There are many episodes in those earlier series where he isn't mentioned at all and quite a few where he is only mentioned in passing. But there are so many where, he might not even be in it but a particular detail will be mentioned. I'm sure you know what I mean. I'm not gonna spell it out. I'm getting triggered even just typing this.

I think it's a brilliant series and the whole Red John thing was actually very clever and well-handled. But way too full-on for me. I saw as much as I needed to. I understood what was going on even though I had a few self-imposed gaps in my watching. When we leave the CBI and get to the FBI bit it's fabulous. I can relax! And I adore Abbott! :)
