first time i'm hearing yodelling in jazz...

flutes are beautiful there, interplaying Western flute with an African wood flute.

i respect Norman Brown and enjoy some of his work, but i always thought that particular Too High cover, with getting Stevie and BiiM on board, was a bit of a wasted opportunity on a guitar version. Too High was created for the keyboards everything from the bass up, and the interaction between those instruments and the phased vocals (which were played with as instruments in themselves) are vital to the vibe of the song. i'm forever on the hunt for Too High renditions (it's my fav Stevie joint alongside Don't You Worry) and get a kick when some covering musicians realise the importance of that original Fender Rhodes bass line, and then just build around it.

i think that's the case in so many of Stevie's songs, that the original sound is equally important to the song's essence and heavily linked to the composition. if his compositions weren't so genius, i would've said his classic sound alone toppled everything else and most other artists' lifetime of work.

I feel the same way about BeBe Winans version of "Jesus Children Of America" (which Stevie was onboard for also), as they relied on heavy bass and organs to give it a gospel feel. It lost a lot of the feel of the original. However, I still love it. In respect to the original they lose the essence, but on their own they are still tracks I enjoy a great deal.

oh for sure, i enjoy a lot of the stuff i criticise, lol. it's just that when it comes to comparing to Stevie-calibre, there's a lot of room to be fussy!

gonna check out that Winans remake..

MJ in with some upright bass lines, and trademark shuffled rhythms of Teddy's brand of swing:

Remember The Time
(New Jack Jazz 21)

That's nice. Bit of some elevator music (a misnomer.. I happen to love that style of music, I've got hundreds of "elevator" tracks in my library) fused with some pop and funk.
