The Carpenters

Wow so many answers. I'm glad you like this group too. As i said it before i just discovered this group. I think i saw Michael say that he liked this group in the mexico deposition or something a long time ago but then i just did not care. I am in love with Karen's voice, my favourite songs are "We've only just begun" and "Rainy days and Mondays". The latter makes me think of Mike so much, e.g when she sings "what i've got they used to call the blues".

"What i feel has come and gone before": who could not relate to these words ?

Sometimes these songs make me sad as they make me think of Karen's life + The Carpenters documentaries i watched on Youtube.

I would have loved to see Michael and Karen perform together. I wonder if Michael ever attended a concert of The Carpenters and vice versa, i.e if The Carpenters ever attended a concert of Michael's.

By the way, if one of you have some time to kill, could that person tell me what instruments are being played on the song entitled "Rainy days and Mondays" please ? Who is doing the background vocals ?

Listening to Goodbye to Love, Karen's voice is just incredible. Another favourite of mine is Rainy Days and Mondays.

That song is so incredibly sad. When I hear Karen's voice singing such sad words, I believe it. She was an incredible talent. Incredible.

Some other songs worth mentioning are "This Masquerade" and the Neil Sedaka penned "Solitaire". Karen's lower register is on full display in these beautiful and of course, melancholy tunes.

And then each and every Christmas season I MUST listen to "Merry Christmas, Darling". A gorgeous song.

That's right, she has this incredibly genuine quality to her voice. Just amazing.

I just heard the song entitled "California Dreamin", is it me or her voice is really different from her voice on other songs ? I love that song. What other songs has she sung that way ? Is the fact that her voice "jumps" at times, e.g when she sings "Well" in the sentence "Well, i got down my knees", due to her voice or the recording studio equipment ?

Here is the song, enjoy !!!!

I to love the Carpenters....they were brilliant as a group. It is VERY sad that Karen's life was cut so short...I think she still had alot of music left in her soul that she needed to share.

Speaking of Olivia, i found her cover of "Rainy days and mondays" a long time ago, i find it very moving given the fact that Karen and Olivia were friends.

I've actually been meaning to get into them more. My favorite song by them is "Rainy Days And Mondays"

The way she sings this song reminds me of Michael. "Cause you're the only one who ever does it riiiiiight". It's from her solo album "Karen Carpenter" which was released in 1996.

This one is by The Carpenters.

Karen Carpenter wasn't just a girl who could sing, she was the model of modern pop vocals. Her phrasing was impeccable, her intonations were superb and her pitch was as close to perfect as humanly possible. You see there's everyday singing, and then there's the way Karen sang. I can't think of a female who put more feeling into her syllables. Every delicate note she killed, the music truly mattered to her.

During MJ's adolescent years, when his voice was maturing into manhood, you can hear his vocals clearly influenced by Karen's style.

I could not have described her better. Karen had one of the greatest pop vocals ever. Dare I say that remains to this day. I grew up listening to the Carpenters and watching them on TV just like with the Jacksons. I can hear so much of the Carpenter's style in "one day in your life". I can imagine Karen singing that song.

Oh, you young people who haven't heard all of her music...you are in for a treat. Geez, once again I feel so old, lol. I guess their music may seem a little "syrupy" and laid back compared to today's crazy music. They were mocked for that even in the 70's. But it's Karen's excellent vocals that truly make the songs (and her brother Richard's backing vocals and keyboard/piano). I loved how she used her lower register.

I think my favorite Carpenters songs are "Goodbye to love" (so sad and so relatable for me), "Close to you" and "superstar". I love them all though.

🥰

EDIT - @Agonum
I've always been lukewarm about this song. But I love this version.
