Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary- DVD / Blu Ray [available on iTunes Nov 19]

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary [Discussion]

Almost everytime I log on here, this section of the board is full of energy and excitement :)
I'm over the moon about the release and the fact that we have something to look forward to.

Feb 2013 is a long wait for someone who doesn't have ABC. I hope it's uploaded youtube :(
I hear ya, that's the first thing that came to mind.
But now I look at it like, it's good for Spike and I'm happy for him.
I believe the project is not just for money for him, so I wish him all the success.
We got your back, get that money baby!

Everything is on the internet within hours, if not instantly, these days.
Yeah, I'm sure we'll get to watch at least half of the whole thing.

"Bad25," shown out of competition in Venice, will be released in February, along with ANOTHER HOUR of behind-the-scenes footage."
Wow, thanks for the heads-up! Can't get no better than this!

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary [Discussion]

By far my favorite thread. Of all the Bad 25 releases (concert DVD, unreleased demos, packaging, etc.), this is the only thread that has absolutely no negativity. And I love it :)

I'm hoping for a few reviews of the quality of the MITM snippet soon!

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary [Discussion]

John Branca -- the doc's executive producer and longtime producer for Jackson, now in charge of his estate -- described "Bad" as a very special album for the late pop star. "It was the first album which he co-produced with Quincy Jones in its entirety, and he wrote nine of the 11 songs." Branca said the film will be shown to Jackson's kids Blanket, Paris and Prince. "Bad 25" draws on a treasure trove of materials from the Jackson estate including home videos shot by Jackson himself or by his closest collaborators during rehearsals. It includes conversations with Martin Scorsese, who filmed one of the music videos for "Bad," which will air in a tailored-for-TV version on ABC in November. Branca said a theatrical release and director's cut for homevideo are also planned, but did not disclose further distribution details.

:tease: :clapping:

I wonder if theatrical release is before they show it on ABC?
Usually it 1st in theaters, then homevideo and last on telly
I'm soooooo going to see in theater and then I buy it, and I might as well watch it on telly:D

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary [Discussion]

Thanks for the little review :D. As a rough estimate, what percentage of the film would you say was footage of MJ as opposed to interviews with various folk?

It's hard to estimate the percentage. There were more interviews but very interesting except those of people who didn't work with him like Mariah Carey, Kanye West, Chris Brown, Justin bieber...

Don't expect too much footage of MJ because you'll maybe desapointed.

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary [Discussion]

I'm sure you will all have a wonderful day, thinking of you all God bless x

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary [Discussion]

Not sure if this is posted, but it's from a french fan who saw it.

French source link: http://www.mjfranceforum.com/index.php?topic=25856.125

Translated:

A critical documentary

Well I'll try to structure it in negatives / positives to be as clear as possible.

NEGATIVE POINTS:

- Good already be aware that in this documentary there are many, many, many interview. Some interesting, others less. Ultimately as a fan, you can not learn almost nothing. And these interviews are still 3/4 2:10 Documentary ... um ...

- The first 35 minutes are quite long and uninteresting, the document is slow to start ...

- In these interviews, those people who have worked on ADB interest but interviews with Kanye West, Justin Bieber (who has never met MJ hum ...), Cee-Lo, Chris Brown, Mariah Carey are really unnecessary. But know that they are there only to bring the audience in the next release in the U.S. on TV. Necessarily because of an interview is to sell a Bieber interview percussionist BAD ... Anyway I hope a version of "fan edit" on the net with all these deletions.

- There are also interviews with journalists (at least 3 different journalists) who are really unnecessary and yet they occupy a very important place in terms of time in the film ...

- The quality of the image ... My god this is a DISASTER! The film ends with "Man In The Mirror" live at Wembley, and the quality is just awful ... This is really a VHS 25 years which was read dozens of times. Restoration work (if there really was one ...) is disgusting, even the fans would have been better restored this VHS. It's just a shame.

- Sound quality also live poor. Multitrack mixing is very poor, there is a sense of porridge with MJ's voice is back ...

- In this document there are also making of clips, with alternative plans clips. Spike made in mixed "alternative plans" and "plans of the clip that we know." The thing is that the image quality of these rushes alternative plans is really good to see very good but when it goes to the plans of the clip that we know ... This is just disgusting ... The difference is impressive! They have not been able to highlight the master clips suddenly it gives something that passes for a quality VHS to Blu-Ray quality almost one plane to another ... INCOMPREHENSIBLE.

- The images in studios. The tell me, how can he put them in the negative ^ ^ It's just over time. Do not ignite, if we combine all the images in the studio MJ I think that happens to a total of 2 minutes on the 2:10 movie. No more. But hey that's something ...

- I do not understand why they have emerged images of 25 June 2009 in the middle of the film ... It falls like a hair in the soup but ...

POSITIVE:

- I start with the studio images that I waited impatiently. There are "I Just Can not Stop Loving You" (with Siedah) and "My Todo Amor Eres Tu" but for me taking voice you do not hear is not LIVE it is just the album version stuck image of MJ in the studio, but mostly it is "Just Good Friend" then catches voice and Ad Libs are 100% live is happiness. The sequence length is 1 minute, but it rocks. After a few pictures of other sessions but there is no sound and do not know what song it comes from ...

- Alternative plans and making of clips are really nice. We even see the Bad and dance rehearsals Smooth Criminal in hotel rooms with the dancers filmed camcorder.

- We see an alternative ending of ADB was unknown for me ... (There is also an interview with Scorsese)

- I finished Spike Lee on that was really cool ... He came almost an hour, made a little speech intro, and then remained ANY session before making a speech to enter! He came with his family. This is especially cool to be stayed until the end because it will be tomorrow at noon in London and he was in Venice yesterday. So that's a lot of miles but it was really nice.

This wholesale. There are more negatives than positives but overall it is a good documentary. FINALLY especially a documentary that speaks music ... Since the time we expected that it is worth seeing. I hope the Blu-Ray bonus offer longer versions of studio sessions because it is the most interesting.

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary [Discussion]

^Pretty harsh review. I will wait for other fan reviews :/

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary [Discussion]

^^

Isn't one of those journalists Joe Vogel? I don't mind if people like him are in it.

And to be honest reviews like this make fans look really ungrateful. I mean you can be critical, but to use words like "disgusting", "disaster" etc. over and over again is just ungrateful. Because you know what's disgusting? Documentaries that we had about MJ around 2005. That's what I call disgusing, not anything that could possibly be included in this documentary.

I wait for more balanced reviews, I can't take this one seriously with its over-use of emotionally loaded negative terms.

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary [Discussion]

This is from Tasha92 from this forum, posted in this thread. She saw the docu yesterday

I saw it!!! It was just amazing!*
I'm sure non fans who will see it on ABC will buy the album and the dvd concert afterwards!!

Spike Lee did a good job! This doc is a good tribute to the bad album! The doc talks about the making of all the songs and videos of this album with cute and funny stories about Michael. *I loved the exclusive footage but it wasn't enough for me as a fan... I wanted more lol but it was good, *Michael is always cute...!!

Tatiana said a cute story about the last scene on the SHORT FILM the way you make me feel but I'm not gonna say more!*

You'll like it!

Tonight was my best experience since Michael's death. We laughed, we cried and sang together! Spike Lee made a little speech! That was really good!

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary [Discussion]

Argh, I feel like they are saving as much studio footage as possible.

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary [Discussion]

I have a feeling that the first reviewer isn't a die hard fan. I'm not even taking it into consideration.

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary [Discussion]

I think we will also get a review from him:

richard lecocq?@mjdatabank

Mjdatabank and french fans honored @SpikeLee as they presented him with a special awrard. Thank you for his work for MJ. #Bad25

It Seems Like There's Going to Be 3 Versions of Bad 25: Theatrical, ABC Special & Home Video

'Bad' boy Spike Lee honors Michael Jackson: Helmer presents pop doc at Venice

August 31, 2012|Nick Vivarelli | Variety

The Lido did the moonwalk on Friday as Spike Lee's "Bad 25" documentary world preemed at the Venice Film Festival, 25 years to the day after Michael Jackson's chart-topping album was released. Lee, wearing a "Bad" T-shirt and black cap, called the two-hour homage, focussing on Jackson's talent, his creative drive and encapsulating the end-of-the-80's pop culture era, "a love letter to Michael," of whom he has been a big fan since childhood, he said. "I wanted to be Michael Jackson," Lee told the packed presser. "I had the afro, the look, but singing and dancing? That's where it stopped." John Branca -- the doc's executive producer and longtime producer for Jackson, now in charge of his estate -- described "Bad" as a very special album for the late pop star. "It was the first album which he co-produced with Quincy Jones in its entirety, and he wrote nine of the 11 songs." Branca said the film will be shown to Jackson's kids Blanket, Paris and Prince. It includes conversations with Martin Scorsese, who filmed one of the music videos for "Bad," which will air in a tailored-for-TV version on ABC in November. Branca said a theatrical release and director's cut for homevideo are also planned, but did not disclose further distribution details. Lee directed two videoclips for Jackson songs "They Don't Care About Us" in 1997, and "This Is It" in 2009. His doc, which unspooled in Venice out-of-competition, will segue to Toronto. Venice feted Lee with its Jaeger-LeCoultre Glory to the Filmmaker award honoring an artist's mark on contemporary cinema on Friday.

the ABC version doesn't seem to be the theatrical movie so there's a chance that BAD 25 might get nominated for an oscar (theater release), golden globe and emmy nomination for the tv special! which would explain why the DVD release is scheduled around Oscar season

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary [Discussion]

Live from paris :
This documentary is very very important. It just counts so much in MJ's history. Simply because for the first timea documentary focuses on the music and the artistry and the nothing else.

The Max Linder venue was packed with more than 70% of the crowd being fans. It was our goal to give the fans the privilege to see the documentary on the big screen.

You can always comment and debate about how such film should be geared and edited, but it is a dramatic step forward to the documentation of MJ's artistry. it has never been done before, It is a first.

When you think you felt Just Good Friends was just a cool song, you discover the magic of this duet when you MJ and SW face to face singing the lines.

I prefer not tell more, this is just a great, great documentary.

At the end of the screening, MJ data bank/MJJNews.fr presented Spike Lee with a special "filmmaker" award from all the fans in France to thank him for his work with Michael, from TDCAU to his collaboration with the Estate on BAD 25.

To me personally, above points are the main thing, his legacy, it has never done before, and it is all about Michael's artistry.

We have countless tabloidish documentaries of Michael, but nothing like this.

Argh, I feel like they are saving as much studio footage as possible.

Isn't the Blu-Ray supposed to have at least one extra hour of footage?

Also, saving for what? This IS about Bad, this IS about the recording of Bad and everything... for what else would they save the footage? That's probably all they have or all they found.

For BAD 50 or rainy days:D

Sorry, I couldn't resist, but I do agree with you about no point saving footage for something else.
It now or never:D

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary [Discussion]

I hope there will be A LOT of extra studio footage on the Blu-Ray!

And 1 hour extra material??? - Come on, that's NOTHING!! Give us 3-4 hours!!

SHAMONE!!!

You should learn by now that they DO "save" material for later. You said the same thing about BAD 25 album, that they wouldn't "save songs" ' cause this IS BAD 25 ann., but what did they do?

Saved songs.

So yes, they'll probably save for later releases taht focuses on random stuff. Maybe a "In Studio With Michael" kind of thing and so on.

I agree 100%. But remember this was a translation, and raw one at that, so maybe the translator did not get the true meaning of the original reviewer. But either way, the original reviewer obviously felt very negatively on those areas. And let's be serious here, FOR ONCE, we get a truly positive all about the music and artistry and genius of Michael SO HOW CAN it BE AT ALL NEGATIVE?

As MJ fans we have been subjected to "disgusting" and "disastrous" documentaries of Michael that were all full of lies, innuendo, and complete distortion of the real Michael Jackson we all know.

As Richard Lacoq says, this is a great, great documentary and personally I cannot wait to see it and buy it and support it:clap:We as fans need to support this type of film about Michael. This way the tabloid trash know that all that garbage about Michael WILL NOT get any views!

I don't speak French but in the original French comment I spotted the word "CATASTROPHE" (in full capitals like that) which I think means the same as in English (and that was translated as DISASTER). So I don't think it was just the translation.

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary [Discussion]

If this film/dvd is a success, they appear to be planning to do the same type of documentary for dangerous and history, so it's up to fans to make sure it is.

I don't like spoilers so was going to avoid the fan review thread but couldn't resist having a peek, lol. So for those who have better resistance and not gone there, what they are saying is that spike's documentary is hoping to get a bbc airing in the uk before christmas, and maybe also the bad wembley concert.

Yeah, I remember it took me DAYS to watch all the extras on my old Lord Of The Rings DVDs. They could give us at least a few hours of extra material on the blu-ray!

And if they want to save some studio footage for future releases, then at least give us footage of Michael playing with Bubbles or throwing popcorn! lol And I'd love to have all the Bad era pepsi commercials on blu-ray... They could also add never-before-seen footage from those ads as a bonus. And I'd love to see the footage of Tatiana falling on her butt when she was getting out of the car in The Way You Make Me Feel, and Michael dusting off her butt. lol She said they kept filming, so surely they have the footage...
