Dear Friend of Save the Children,

Our 2009 Summer Campaign Matching Gift Challenge deadline is almost here.

Just imagine how many young lives can be saved if we reach our 2009 Summer Campaign Annual Fund goal! A loyal friend has come forward with a way to help us save more children and has offered to match every gift Save the Children receives before July 31, 2009 (up to a total of $250,000).

Please act before July 31st to make your support of Save the Children go twice as far helping children in need.

With so many of the world’s children needing our help, we must make the most of this opportunity to expand the reach of Save the Children's low-cost, high-impact programs. Our goal is in sight ... but so is the July 31st deadline.

Please donate now.

Thank you, in advance, for any amount you choose to contribute to helping the world’s neediest children.

Urge Congress to End Global Hunger: Co-Sponsor H.R. 2817, the Roadmap to End Global Hunger and Promote Food Security Act of 2009
1_589x343.jpg
Take action and urge your U.S. Representative to co-sponsor the Roadmap to End Global Hunger and Promote Food Security Act of 2009 (H.R. 2817). This bill, which was introduced by Representatives Jim McGovern (D-MA) and Jo Ann Emerson (R-MO), is critical for creating an effective plan to address global hunger. There are now more than 1 billion hungry people worldwide. In partnership with other countries, the U.S. can successfully address global hunger by using the comprehensive approach outlined in this bill.

Modernizing Foreign Assistance: Save the Children applauds legislation to revitalize foreign aid and awaits the State Department’s first review of Diplomacy and Development
Senate Foreign Relations Chairman John Kerry, Ranking Member Richard Lugar and a bipartisan group of Senators recently introduced the Foreign Assistance Revitalization and Accountability Act of 2009 (S. 1524). The legislation seeks to make U.S. foreign assistance programs more transparent, coordinated, and effective. At the State Department, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced a strategic review of development and diplomacy efforts calling for a Quadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review (QDDR) modeled after the Defense Department’s Quadrennial Defense Review process. Learn more about Save the Children’s efforts at modernizing foreign assistance.

Featured Story Aid Rushed to Children Jeopardized by Diarrhea Outbreak in NepalIn hill villages in western Nepal so remote that helicopters must be used when supplies are quickly needed, a diarrhea outbreak blamed on contaminated water and poor hygiene has claimed the lives of over 300 children and adults. Save the Children donors who have supported the Halaby-Murphy Endowment Fund made it possible for medicines and water purifiers to be rushed to the scene to help children survive and recover.

While deaths from diarrhea are rare in developed nations, the disease is a leading cause of child mortality in many countries like Nepal, where children may already be weakened by poor nutrition, unsafe water and poverty.

This is the latest of over 100 emergencies Save the Children has responded to thanks to the donor-supported Halaby-Murphy Endowment Fund. But today's economic uncertainty is putting even more pressure on the Fund to support the quick launch of relief when children in the United States and around the world need urgent relief. And the next emergency may happen at any moment.

You can help with a gift to the Halaby-Murphy Endowment Fund. When the Fund grows with your gift, so does Save the Children's ability to reach vulnerable children.

When Hope Matters Most: Displaced Pakistani Mother Turns to Save the Children To Help Her Children Recover from Dangerous DiseasesRazia and her four children were among the more than 2 million Pakistanis displaced in May by conflict. The family left their home so quickly they had no time to contact relatives or gather possessions.

They found safety in a remote village miles away – in a home shared by some 40 other children and adults. The unsanitary conditions took a toll: all of Razia's children suffered severe diarrhea and pneumonia, which can be fatal if left untreated.
Razia learned of a nearby health clinic supported by Save the Children. Once there, her daughter and three young sons received medicines to treat their illnesses and multi-vitamins to reduce their risk of infections while living in the overcrowded house.

"It was so difficult for me to provide my children with good food and other things" said Razia. "I was happy that we finally had a health specialist. It was so great to have the vitamins – my children really needed them."

Kate Dischino Guides Local Disaster Responses, Makes Evacuation Shelters Safer for U.S. Children"It's incredible to stand shoulder to shoulder with a community that was just turned upside down, and work with them to get them back on their feet. Even in the worst of times, you see the best of humanity," says Kate Dischino of Save the Children's Domestic Emergencies Unit.

With our donors' support, Kate trains local leaders and emergency response teams so that when a disaster strikes a U.S. community, children's needs are addressed. She is also among the first staff sent to a disaster to organize safe play areas for children whose families have evacuated their homes.
Kate helped restore child care services in a California community after the 2007 wildfire outbreak and served children in hurricane evacuation shelters during Hurricanes Gustav and Ike in 2008.

"It's tremendously difficult to see a child who has just arrived in a shelter after being evacuated. It can be frightening not knowing who is sleeping next to you or what will happen next. But as soon as children see the toys and activities provided through our Child Friendly Spaces, they laugh, play, and get to be a child again. In that moment, everything stops and you just have to smile."

Kate and all of Save the Children's emergency specialists provide technical guidance and emergency supplies and programs to support children's safety and well-being during the toughest of times.

G-20 Summit : World Leaders Must Accelerate Development Agenda
3994565894_6a27a9052a_m.jpg
At the conclusion of the recent two-day G-20 summit, Save the Children welcomed G-8 and other world leaders’ agreement to recognize the broader, more globally-representative group of nations as the new premier forum of international economic cooperation. However, G-20 leaders need to go beyond their Pittsburgh summit declaration and make development a more central part of the group’s mission – both in word and deed with a strong commitment to accountability. G-8 leaders must also act fulfill their past promises. Learn more about Save the Children's work at the G-20 summit and read an op-ed by Save the Children Survive to 5 Chairman Bill Frist on how Pittsburgh, now a model of economic resilience, worked to cut an infant mortality rate once on par with Somalia's rate today.

Urge Congress to End Global Hunger
Nepal-Mother-and-Son-web.jpg
World Food Day, October 16, is a worldwide event to raise awareness, understanding and informed, year-around action to alleviate hunger. Every six seconds a child dies of hunger-related complications. Speak out for children on this day and every day: Tell our leaders to cut through the red tape and pass a comprehensive strategy to fight world hunger.
With a smart strategy and political support, we can end child hunger. However, food and hunger programs are spread over dozens of federal agencies, hampering efforts to provide coordinated and effective aid to the world's most vulnerable. Ask Congress to support H.R. 2817, the Roadmap to End Global Hunger and Promote Food Security Act of 2009. This bill advances a comprehensive plan to fight hunger and create opportunities that will allow families around the world to feed themselves. Take action and urge your U.S. Representative to co-sponsor the Roadmap to End Global Hunger and Promote Food Security Act of 2009 (H.R. 2817).

Senators urge President to promptly nominate an Administrator for USAID In a public letter to the President, Senators John Kerry and Richard Lugar pressed President Obama to nominate a candidate “who has already gone through the vetting process and that has experience in global development.” The letter went on to highlight how the leadership vacancy at USAID undermines our nation’s development capacity in critical foreign policy hotspots Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. The Modernizing Foreign Assistance Network, of which Save the Children is a principal member, has undertaken a POLL suggesting possible candidates for the post.

World Food Day 2009: Ten Things You Should Know About Child Hunger

Save the Children Experts Available to Discuss Current Food Crises in Guatemala, Ethiopia and East Africa
WESTPORT, Conn. (Oct. 13, 2009) — Food prices have fallen from last year's peaks, wealthy countries are starting to recover from the financial crisis, and world leaders have pledged a $22 billion food security initiative — yet hunger is getting worse for poor children around the world.

1.For the first time in history more than a billion people live with chronic hunger — at least 400 million of them are children. Check out the Roadmap to End Global Hunger.

2. In the developing world, volatile, historically-high food prices, together with the ongoing impact of the global economic crisis, continue to drive families into poverty, putting millions more children at risk of hunger and malnutrition.

3. Drought is adding to extreme food crises in Guatemala and East Africa. In Ethiopia alone, 3 million children urgently need food.

4. A child dies every six seconds from hunger-related causes.

5. When there isn't enough food, poor families resort to skipping meals, pulling children from school, selling off livestock and assets and foregoing health care. Look here to see how you can help families in need eat well and increase their income.

6. Poor families in developing countries typically spend 50 to 70 percent of their income on food. Meanwhile, U.S. families spend only 5 to 10 percent of their budget on food.

7. When small children are malnourished, their physical and intellectual development may be permanently impaired.

8. Food shortages will increase as world population grows. By 2050, 70 percent more food will be needed to meet demand. Yet investment in agriculture is historically low.

9. It takes more than food to end hunger. For instance, the most agriculturally-productive region of Mozambique has the highest rates of child malnutrition in the country. Poor families must be able to access a healthy diet.

10. There is some good news. World leaders have pledged support for a $22 billion food security initiative and the Obama administration has outlined a new strategy to fight hunger. You can help these plans become reality by writing to your U.S. Representative today.

Experts Available
World Food Day is Friday, Oct. 16. Save the Children experts can discuss current food crises in Guatemala, East Africa, and elsewhere, and the comprehensive strategy needed to address hunger worldwide.
