Putting Children First on the Policy Agenda
0708-enews-spon-nepal.jpg
As President Obama and Members of the Congress prepare to address the many daunting challenges ahead, one imperative has received little attention - putting children first. Save the Children CEO, Charles MacCormack, recently wrote a commentary in the Washington Times asking both the new administration and Congress to keep in mind five practical steps that can make a real difference in the lives of vulnerable children both at home and abroad. Read more about steps the President and Congress can take to help children in need.

Protecting Children In Gaza and Israel
0208-enews-spon.jpg
More than a month after violent conflict disrupted life in and around Gaza, the health and well-being of children in the area remain at risk and Save the Children continues to call for a permanent cease-fire, paving the way for a durable peace that will benefit all children both in Gaza and Israel. Since late December, Save the Children has delivered life-saving aid to more than 58,000 people in Gaza, half of them children. Even during the height of the violence, Save the Children, working with local community-based organizations, reached more than 20,000 people with food parcels, and since the fighting decreased, the agency has delivered additional aid, including food, water, baby hygiene kits, family hygiene kits, plastic sheeting and carpets (to go under mattresses) to many more. Addressing Global Hunger and the Food Crisis
pic2_030305.jpg
On February 5th, Senators Richard Lugar (R-IN), Robert Casey (D-PA) and Richard Durbin (D-IL) introduced the Global Food Security Act to increase resources for long-term rural development, poverty alleviation, poverty alleviation and agricultural productivity, as well as for improving the U.S. emergency response to food crises. While introducing the bill, Senator Lugar stated, “Because those who subsist on less than one dollar a day spend at least half their incomes on food, according to the International Food Policy Research Institute, the bill highlights the need to focus on those living in extreme poverty.” Throughout the fall, Save the Children advocated for this legislation to reach poor families and children. At this time, Senators have cosponsored the bill. Learn more about Save the Children’s response to the child hunger crisis.

Dear Friend of Save the Children,

More than 25,000 children die every day from preventable and treatable causes.

Here’s how you can help us save them ...

For more than 25,000 children in the developing world, your response to this e-mail could be a matter of life and death.

That’s because in the next 24 hours, 25,000 children in the developing world under the age of 5 will die, MOST OF THEM NEEDLESSLY, from preventable causes like diarrhea, pneumonia and malaria. You can help save their lives with a special donation to Save the Children.

Urgent Message From Ethiopia
It’s amazing to visit villages where we work and see children quickly recover from severe malnutrition and debilitating illnesses. But so many more children need our help and may not survive without it.

I hope Save the Children supporters will respond with great compassion and speed.

Save the Children's low-cost, highly effective health programs give gravely imperiled girls and boys the help they need to survive by providing:
 • Vitamin A supplements to prevent blindness and early death;
 • Antibiotics to treat infections;
 • Oral rehydration therapy to treat dehydration; and,
 • Vaccines to prevent common diseases like malaria.
Internationally, preventing such needless deaths takes more than medical treatments. It requires dedicated staff and the resources to ensure that our help reaches these children in time.

But more importantly, we need the support of caring people like you to expand the reach of Save the Children's health programs and other efforts on behalf of the world’s neediest children.

There’s nothing more heartbreaking than watching a child die from malnutrition or easily preventable diseases ... and nothing more satisfying than knowing you helped us save that child.

So, please take a moment right now to donate to Save the Children – any delay will mean more children die needlessly.

Thank you,

Congress Introduces Bill to Boost Survival Rates for Mothers & Babies
0708-enews-spon-nepal.jpg
New bi-partisan legislation introduced on March 12 in the U.S. House of Representatives would provide millions of children and mothers with a better chance at survival through expansion of basic health care measures and services. The measure, named the Newborn Child, and Mother Survival Act of 2009, was introduced by Reps. Betty McCollum (D-MN), along with Dave Reichert (R-WA) and Lois Capps (D-CA) and is supported by the U.S. Coalition for Child Survival, whose members include Save the Children.
Please tell your Representative in Congress to support this vital and bipartisan legislation.

Dear Friend of Save the Children,

Conflict-affected children and families in Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province are on the move. As many as 500,000 people are believed to have left their homes and rural villages as conflict has intensified. Hundreds of thousands more may flee the region in the coming days.

They are arriving in host communities and temporary camps with nothing more than what they could carry over miles of unforgiving territory.

Save the Children is there, working to meet children’s urgent needs as the humanitarian crisis in northwestern Pakistan unfolds. The agency has launched a broad relief effort to assist children and families who have left their homes and villages.

Your support today for Save the Children’s Pakistani Children in Crisis Appeal will help alleviate the harsh conditions greeting girls and boys displaced by the conflict.

Two Save the Children health teams arrived in the affected area on May 11 to help strengthen local health care services. Some 1,500 kits containing essential hygiene and household supplies are being sent to needy families. These efforts are part of Save the Children’s coordinated response in partnership with the government of the North West Frontier Province and local authorities. The goal is to reach some 50,000 children and adults.

The agency also will work to provide protection and education programs for children and will make special efforts to reach separated children, women-headed households, families with children under 5, and families with an injured or ill family member.

“People have, in many cases, left their homes with little more than the clothes on their backs, and there is a desperate need for food and other basic items. Basic health services are also badly over-stretched,” said Ned Olney, who heads Save the Children’s humanitarian response efforts globally.

Your generous gift will help launch and sustain relief, and also help Save the Children make displaced children feel more secure and safe in their unfamiliar environment.

Save the Children knows the North West Frontier Province well. The agency has worked there since Pakistan’s catastrophic earthquake in 2005 – and has worked elsewhere in Pakistan for over 25 years.

I am rushing this message to you because children are enduring great need and uncertainty. At times like this Save the Children’s donors take quick action for children, and I thank you for sharing my great concern for them.

Sincerely,

Save the Children's Advocacy Day 2009 a Success
Yarmuth235.jpg
More than 225 Save the Children delegates went to Washington, D.C. for this year's Advocacy Day Program on April 21-22 to champion funding for newborn, child & maternal health and for U.S. rural after-school programs. "Advocacy Matters" said Save the Children Board Vice Chairman Cokie Roberts during the opening reception. Delegates proved her right during 130 meetings with senators and representatives where they spoke on behalf of children's issues both in the U.S. and around the world. Early returns on the results of that advocacy, for example, show a 25 percent increase in consponsors for the Newborn, Child and Mother Survival Act (HR 1410). Save the Children supporters also attended a White House briefing with Obama administration foreign policy advisor Gayle Smith, domestic policy advisor Heather Higginbottom, and Vice President Biden’s special assistant Evan Ryan. Learn more about our advocacy day results and the advocacy day experience of some students from Michigan, Kentucky and Texas who joined Save the Children's Knit One, Save One's campaign and knitted caps for newborn children.

Tell Congress to Strengthen Our Nation’s Foreign Assistance Tools

On April 28, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Representative Howard Berman (D-CA) and Representative Mark Kirk (R-IL) introduced legislation that is a good first step in making U.S. foreign assistance more effective, efficient and transparent. H.R. 2139, the “Initiating Foreign Assistance Reform Act of 2009,” would require President Obama to develop and implement a comprehensive national strategy for global development, improve evaluation of development programs, and increase the transparency of U.S. foreign assistance to developing countries. It is important that Congress acts promptly on this legislation to ensure U.S. aid programs are squarely focused on helping vulnerable children and families out of poverty.
Take Action and tell YOUR Member of Congress to cosponsor the Initiating Foreign Assistance Reform Act of 2009 (H.R. 2139).

President Obama Announces Initiative to Combat World Hunger
field1.jpg
Save the Children praised President Barack Obama’s recent announcement after the G-20 summit in London in April that the United States plans to double investments in food security for Africa, Latin America and other poor regions of the world. President Obama announced his intent to work with Congress to provide $448 million in immediate assistance to vulnerable populations, and to double support for agricultural development to over $1 billion. "We strongly support the president's commitment to give poor children and families in developing countries the tools they need to lift themselves out of poverty," said Save the Children President and CEO Charles MacCormack. "We are urging Congress to move quickly on this request, which could help save the lives of millions of malnourished children in the developing world."

A Message for G-8 Leaders: Focus on Saving Childrens Lives in Africa
Day-of-African-Child-3_235.jpg
On Tuesday June 16th, to commemorate the Day of the African Child, African leaders, international health activists and Members of Congress in Washington, D.C. joined in a show of support for increased resources to lower child and maternal mortality rates in Africa. At a congressional briefing, three African ambassadors to the United States — Amina Salum Ali, from the African Union, Hawa Ndilowe, from Malawi, and Abdoulaye Diop, from Mali — cited recent successes in sub-Saharan Africa to reduce newborn and child death rates and urged donor nations for additional support to help meet the global goal of reducing child mortality rates by two-thirds by 2015. At a later event on Capitol Hill, Rep. Betty McCollum (D-MN) and former GOP Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist called on Congress to increase current U.S. funding to support cost-effective solutions to help improve the chances of African children surviving the first five years of life. Learn more about our Day of the African Child events and Save a child in Africa by asking your member to consponsor and help pass the Newborn, Child and Mother Survival Act of 2009 (HR 1410).

Save The Children is great. I donated twice last year for children in Zimbabwe and Ethiopia.
And I gotta say that Michael really inspired me to do something like that. And it feels so good.

Save the Children Welcomes G8 Emphasis on Food Security, Child Health; Urges Follow-through 2009
4.jpg
There was some good news for poor and hungry children from the G8 Summit of leaders from the world’s wealthiest countries earlier this month in Italy. Thanks to the leadership of President Obama, G8 leaders announced a new $20 billion food security initiative. 9.2 million children under five die each of year of largely preventable and treatable causes; malnutrition is an underlying cause in over a third of those deaths. Although G8 leaders did not take the equally bold steps on maternal and child health we had sought, they did announce a global consensus on maternal, newborn and child health that breathes new life into the fight against poverty and child deaths. With the President’s leadership and our encouragement, that announcement could pave the way for dramatic action when G8 leaders get together next June in Canada. Learn more about Save the Children's response to the G-8 meeting and take action by writing to President Obama to thank him for his leadership and encourage him to move child survival to the top of the international agenda over the coming year.

President Obama Remarks on Child and Maternal Health
1.jpg
Save the Children welcomes President Barack Obama’s recent comments while in in Accra, Ghana regarding the importance child and maternal health. The president said "We will fight -- we will fight neglected tropical disease. And we won't confront illnesses in isolation -- we will invest in public health systems that promote wellness and focus on the health of mothers and children." The president's remarks came after a visit earlier in the day with First Lady Michelle Obama to see the newborn and maternal health services provided at the U.S. Agency for International Development-funded La General Hospital in Accra. Learn more about Save the Children's actions to save the lives of the more than 9 million children in the developing world die before they reach the age of 5.

Both House and Senate Complete Major Action on Funding for Children Globally
finanace-pic-mad.jpg
On July 9th, both chambers of Congress completed major action on funding affecting children globally. By a vote of 318 to 106, the House of Representatives passed legislation allocating $48.8 billion to the State, Foreign Operations account, including significant funding for agriculture and food security programs and basic education. Earlier in the day the Senate Committee on Appropriations passed its FY10 State, Foreign Operations bill totaling $48.7 billion with roughly $555 million going towards child survival and maternal health. Once the Senate bill has passed the floor vote, both bills will go to conference where any differences will have to be reconciled. View a summary of the House FY10 State, Foreign Operations bill and the Senate FY10 State, Foreign Operations bill.

Become the Newest Make a Difference Team Leader We’re committed to helping twice as many children by 2012, and we need your help! That's why we want to add 500 new Make a Difference Team Leaders by August 31, 2009. If each of the 500 Team Leaders rallied just 10 people to donate $10 each, the Make a Difference Project will raise $50,000 by the end of the summer for children programs! It takes so little to make a difference when we all work together. The goal of the Make a Difference Project is for you create an online fundraising page, and ask your friends, family and colleagues (on and offline) to make a small donation in support of children in need, and then invite them to come together to celebrate the BIG difference your collective donations can make. Celebrate by organizing a post-campaign happy hour celebration, a movie night, a backyard BBQ, a day at the beach or a picnic in the park. Come together to partake in something that you and your friends enjoy and dedicate being together to the fact that you are all Making a Difference! Learn More about the Make a Difference campaign.

Save the Children reached 37 million children in 2008. This year, we’re committed to helping twice as many children by 2012, and we need your help! That's why we're looking to find 500 new “Make a Difference Team Leaders” by August 31, 2009.

If each of the 500 Team Leaders rallies 10 team members who donate just $10 each, then “Make a Difference” could raise $50,000!

Here’s how to get started fundraising online now.

Go to: http://bit.ly/xlSIk

On behalf of all the children you will be helping us to serve, thank you for making a difference!
