Rolling Stones continue their hatred of Michael.

How the hell is Michael so low? At the very least, he should be in the top 20.

You have people like Rihanna, John Lennon Lady Gaga ahead of him. You have Taylor Swift at #102, and you are telling me that Michael is only 16 places better than Swift when it comes to singing.

Like I said, Rolling Stones are a DISGRACE!!!

My rage when I saw this on Twitter earlier today was enough for me to just delete the app. I swear to God, they do this because they know anything they do regarding MJ will drive engagement. I was annoyed he wasn't in top 10 and then when I saw he wasn't in top 20 I was shocked. I never predicted it would be so offensively low. I am forever done with this publication. Their disrespect toward Michael is just insane at this point. I don't even know what else to say. It's had me pissed off for hours.

I swear they did this list a few years earlier and had Michael in the top 40, which I felt was too low. But this new updated ranking is just taking the mickey.

I want to say he was like 17? Whatever it was, it was already too low in my opinion. I started a whole thread awhile ago about Michael's voice because I genuinely believe he has the most incredible voice I've ever heard. His voice sends me out into the universe. There is no voice that has the effect on me that his voice has. Beyond that though, it is just objectively a technically immaculate voice, proven from the time he was a child until the 2000s. I mean c'mon. He deserves some respect here.

If this is about live singing then MJ has himself to blame
Hard disagree, but it's also not about that.

If this is about singing in general then yes it is rather low but it is hard to make such lists of course.
Hard to make such lists, of course. But there is no defending this at all. This was intentional.

I mean it is what you get when you base your performances on dancing and spectacle And I haven’t even touched upon the terrible miming or out of breath performances on the dangerous tour. If they make a similar list of the greatest dancers in pop history MJ will be top 5 for sure.

seriously? Wow.

I saw the 2008 list MJ was 25th. Whitney Houston 34th, now 2nd, that’s a significant drop but he has been out of the picture. I’m sure he will make a significant rise after the biopic. I think Whitney found some new support since her passing and the upcoming biopic

This began when Michael Jackson's change of appearance took place (in the 'BAD' era).

Michael Jackson got a backlash for that from the Rolling Stone magazine and also from its readers.

For example, American writer David Wild (who was Music Editor at that magazine during that period) stated that the magazine's readers did not like that change of the singer's image.

It is telling that in the Rolling Stone 1988 Readers' poll, Michael Jackson was voted by its readers as the number 1 'Worst Male Singer', 'Most Unwelcome Comeback', 'Worst Dressed Male Singer', while his 'BAD' Tour was voted as the second 'Worst Tour of the Year' (there were also other categories with very disappointing results from that poll for him).

The Rolling Stone itself has also a negative attitude towards Michael Jackson from the 'BAD' era onwards.

For example, some time ago, the magazine named the English singer Harry Styles as the new 'King Of Pop', a move that exaggerated not only many Michael Jackson's fans but also members of his family.

Now that was a wind up

Even if we exclude Dangerous and History tours, Michael's live singing from 1969-1989 warrants him a place in the top 20, at least.

Also, this list isn't just about living singing, but studio vocals as well.

And the breathy vocals at Dangerous Tour was only when Michael was performing with a headset. When he was performing with a mic, he sounded fine. Live vocals only started to go downhill with the History tour.

This. Exactly this.

It disturbs me how someone can dedicate a lifetime to perfecting their art, working tirelessly, working harder and more consistently than the vast majority of human beings do at anything in their lives from the times of his earliest memory formation, sacrificing a tremendous amount to be as amazing as he was and yet, somehow, a few difficult years are enough to discredit all of that. I don't get it and I never will.

These lists are always bullshit...Rolling Stone is a notoriously "White Rock publication" so they never give much credence to black or world artists.....never did to Michael anyway....it's all superficial...I wouldn't pay much attention to their ways or there silly ass magazine...pour yourself a glass of wine...turn up the stereo and play Michael loudly....it's what matters to us ...not them...Michael was the greatest ....we know it...and they know it too....they are just trying to save face and keep themselves somewhat relevant good luck to them :) let them plug whatever trash/tripe music they want...we know what's up.

Just watch him fly up the list once his artistry gets more attention with the biopic. If Whitney can jump from 34 to 2 then I fully expect Michael to fly into the 30 again.
Is that high enough? I don’t know. I’m happy he is in the top 100 either way. Ok there are some questionable picks but just look at those names, so many legendary voices…

During the HIStory tour he sounded bad but in the studio he sounded fantastic. This is either not wanting to sing live (which is a punishable offense) or there was some studio trickery needed to make him sound good. I say it is option 1. However you wanna look at it I can’t fault the listmakers for taking into account 2 entire tours with excessive miming.

We have no clue what the criteria for this were or who compiled the list. Maybe next time an MJ fan has an input and it will have a positive effect.
If I make the list he is top 3 ( not quite sure where I place him exactly) if @staywild23 makes it he is nr 1 etc
It is just a list, an opinion by only a few people, it is no big deal.

@staywild23 Lighten up, you can’t go into 2023 with your blood pressure up into the stratosfear. 😜
and if you want to get it out of your system just insult me real bad, I forgive you and will take it as a man 🤓

I'm not sure what I said to warrant being told to lighten up. Either way, no need to insult you. I just fundamentally disagree with everything you've said on this thread 🤷‍♀️

I don’t know with every post you make it feels like you are terribly upset by my opinion. Which is great because my opinion matters 😎

It's the way nobody ever actually even reads this old boomer magazine. It's always relaying the point from one person who actually reads it. Nobody cares about these trash tabloids, literal cosmopolitan for American men. Doesn't deserve the time of day.
If nobody reads or cares about Rolling Stone, then how does this thread exist? 🤣

The sudden jumps from list to list tells you how little thought goes into them. It’s almost as if they are randomly generated.
