"I sat him in front of a mirror and shot some photos, and I said "act like you're reading a letter like you just got from your girl,'" photographer Garcia said. The result was a photo showing Michael and his reflection in a dressing room mirror. Garcia said he only recently realized it echoes the singer's later hit "Man in the Mirror."
In March 1978, a well-known producer, Peter Riches, notified a college student of Pasadena City College (PCC) and a free-lance photographer, Reginald Garcia, to be at Gower Studios. The producer was to shoot a made-for-television show for CBS featuring Michael Jackson and the Jackson Five. Reginald was on-site to handle still photography during the shoot.
The day started about 8:15 am when a large, beautifully adorned, pearl-white Limousine pulled up to Gower Studios with Michael and the Jackson Five. Within minutes, I was shooting dozens of 35mm pictures, with a wide variety of settings, with my trusty Nikon F2 camera. Michael was extremely gracious throughout the entire day, posing for a number of photos both on and off the set. One photo series that I am especially fond of is when Michael Jackson was sitting in front of a mirror reading a letter from a friend. I spent the entire day shooting pictures on-stage, in dressing rooms, with and without his brothers. I remember the day distinctly as Michael was only 19 years old at the time and to my knowledge these are the last shoot of the Jackson's together.
My especially fond memories of this day and constantly remind that that Michael was the greatest guy you could ever talk to. What a genuine person and a truly inspirational individual! These pictures are a remembrance of one of the greatest performers the world has ever known. After cherishing these photographs for the last three decades, I have finally decided they should be shared with the world, just as Michael shared his life with all of us. These photos are the originals and include herein granted all copyrights for each of the photographs.
