Michael Jackson was Crowned King Sani in Ivory Coast

Michael-the-African-King-michael-jackson-22912894-900-1495.jpg

Michael Jackson was a crowned King in the Ivory Coast, during one of his epic tours of the African continent. [...]

Here, in the land that he personally described as the "land of his ancestors", Michael Jackson consented to being crowned King Sani in a ceremony conducted under a sacred tree in the gold-mining village of Krindjabo, heart of the Agni tribe near the capital Abidjan.

The coronation took place superintended by traditional chief Amon N'Djaolk, who placed a golden crown on the head of the tribe's new monarch and declared that Michael Jackson was now King of Sani, king of this proud West African tribespeople.

In fact, 'King Michael' loved the honor so much that he kept a very close relationship with the tribe for the whole 18 years that he reigned over the tribe as their monarch...

His well-recited and shy response after the coronation is well documented. Overcome by emotions, Michael said "merci beaucoup" to his French-speaking subjects, repeating the same in English with the trademark soft "thank you very much".

The coat of arms of Côte d'Ivoire in its current form was adopted in 2001. The focal point of the emblem is the head of an elephant. The elephant is symbolically important to the nation since it is the largest animal found in Côte d'Ivoire as well as being the source of ivory for which the nation is named. The rising sun is a traditional symbol of a new beginning. Below the elephant head is a banner containing the name of the nation.

Toay in MJJ History - January 20, 1995

mjking95.jpg

1995 - Michael and Lisa Marie welcome King Nana Amon Ndoufou IV, ruler of Sanwi, at Los Angeles airport on a 4 day visit.

King of Pop Michael Jackson and his wife Lisa Marie Presley-Jackson played host to King Nana Amon Ndoufou IV, ruler of Sanwi on the Ivory Coast, during a break from his recording sessions in Los Angeles.

Smiling broadly and exuding a special joy, Jackson greeted the exalted ruler who had crowned him King of Sanwi three years ago when the "King of Pop, Rock and Soul" visited the West African nation, one of six countries he toured on a goodwill trip to Africa.

It was Black History Month in 1992 when Jackson was crowned King of Sanwi during impressive ceremonies held in the Village of Krindjabo, located near Abidjan, Ivory Coast. Called the "prodigal child of the Bible," the King of Pop was regal in bearing as the crown of gold was placed upon his head.

During the King's visit to Los Angeles, Jackson took pride in hosting King Ndoufou IV, the most important Akan ruler in the Cote d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast).

Commenting briefly on the visit of the King who crowned him King of Sanwi, Jackson told:

"Michael Jackson was extremely pleased and delighted to host the King."

During the 17th and 18th centuries, four Agni clans crossed the Camoe River and established themselves at Krinjabo. The head of the first clan was immediately crowned King of Sanwi, because the Akan cannot conceive of human society without a King.

King Ndoufou is more than a symbol, he is the spirit of his people and the father of his subjects. His person is sacred and inviolate. The King identifies with his deceased ancestors. That is why, according to tradition, he is called "Nana," which means old wise man.

No matter what his actual age, the King is a sacred man and is called "Nana" by all of his subjects, even the elderly, because he is ageless and, therefore, the eldest.

While in the U.S., King Ndoufou and his representatives brought greetings from President Henri Konan Bedie and the people of the Ivory Coast. Ndoufou and his representatives made tentative plans to meet with U.S. businessmen to inform them of investment opportunities in the Ivory Coast. They also scheduled a meeting with Atty. Johnnie Cochran, the chief defense attorney for O.J. Simpson. Cochran is honorary consulate for the Ivory Coast.

Short poem called 'Success' that fits Michael so well

michael-jackson-1978-2.jpg

This is a piece for the 25th which I saw posted on Michael's website in 2009. It is called 'Success', written by Bessie Stanley in 1905 and appeared in the Lincoln Sentinel. The words fit Michael so well.

He has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often and loved much,
Who has gained the respect of intelligent men (and women) and the love of little children,
Who has filled his niche and accomplished his task,
Who has left the world better than he found it,
Whether by an improved poppy, a perfect poem or a rescued soul,
Who has never lacked appreciation of Earth's beauty or failed to express it,
Who has always looked for the best in others
And given them the best he had;
Whose life was an inspiration,
Whose memory is a benediction.

I shall now log on to Major Love Prayer, light my candle and read 'Heal The World' from 'Dancing The Dream.'

J&R and the King of Pop

mj_rachelle.jpg

We here at J&R are saddened by the loss of Michael Jackson. Not only was he a wonderful entertainer that gave so much to the world, he was also a friend.

J&R CEO Rachelle Friedman knew Michael personally and remembered a man that was kindly & shy, yet a smart businessman. She spoke to CBS 2:

“He was very smart, very astute. He went into a whole explanation why he bought all the Beatles songs. He was really a genius, knew the value of things, and was very astute and drove a hard bargain.”

Rachelle also didn’t believe any of the rumors that swirled around Jackson later in his career.

“He was like a beloved uncle to them, he didn’t do anything inappropriate,” Friedman said. “In fact, they were picking out DVDs and some of them were violent. He said, ‘No, these aren’t the kind of DVDs I want you bringing home.’”

Down in the music store, fans are still pouring in to purchase Jackson CDs, vinyl, whatever they can get their hands on. The Daily News even reported on the line of fans that stretched down the block before the store even opened! Rachelle says the store hasn’t seen anything like this since John Lennon passed away in 1980.

NY1 (video at link) stopped by to speak to some fans that were shopping for Jackson items. One woman had this to say about her purchase: “Have to have this, getting this for my husband and myself, my children. If they don’t know about him, they will.”

Part of Michael's Speech at Oxford and song The Lost Children

You know, when you really listen to a song, listen with more than just your ears, you can discover many truths of life in just one song. Take for example the song The Lost Children. Going by the title alone it would seem to be about kidnapped children, stolen children, possibly children running away from home. Then you hear the totality of the lyrics and it's like a prayer; a prayer for the safety and well-being of children the world over, loved by their fathers and mothers. Maybe there are other meanings to discover ?

Michael said the following in his Oxford Speech:

"Today children are constantly encouraged to grow up faster, as if this period known as childhood is a burdensome stage, to be endured and ushered through, as swiftly as possible. And on that subject, I am certainly one of the world's greatest experts.

Ours is a generation that has witnessed the abrogation of the parent-child covenant. Psychologists are publishing libraries of books detailing the destructive effects of denying one's children the unconditional love that is so necessary to the healthy development of their minds and character. And because of all the neglect, too many of our kids have, essentially, to raise themselves. They are growing more distant from their parents, grandparents and other family members, as all around us the indestructible bond that once glued together the generations, unravels.

This violation has bred a new generation, Generation O let us call it, that has now picked up the torch from Generation X. The O stands for a generation that has everything on the outside - wealt h, success, fancy clothing and fancy cars, but an aching emptiness on the inside. That cavity in our chests, that barrenness at our core, that void in our centre is the place where the heart once beat and which love once occupied.

And it's not just the kids who are suffering. It's the parents as well. For the more we cultivate little-adults in kids'-bodies, the more removed we ourselves become from our own child-like qualities, and there is so much about being a child that is worth retaining in adult life. "

RT Charity of the Month – August AHOPE for Children

In honor of our beloved brother’s birthday month, we are highlighting a special cause that meant so much to him. Michael holds a record in Guiness Book of World Records for contributing to the most charities and he donated $500,000 to Elizabeth Taylor’s Aids Research Foundation and made many appeals to the powers that be.

It is very well known that Micheal Jackson befriended the ostracized Ryan White, who gained media attention after his public battle with school administrators who expelled him for having AIDS. Michael was extremely sensitive to pain and suffering of sick children and was an avid supporter of Ryan’s advocacy efforts. Upon Ryan’s death, Michael honored his friend with the video “Gone too Soon” in 1990. Please watch Michael’s loving speech in 1992 at President Bill Clinton’s inaugural gala, Michael urged the President to increase funding for AIDS research and care.

In the years to follow, Michael continued to support a number of charities and humanitarian programs, including the AIDS Project L.A. and the Minority AIDS Project and in his honor of Michael’s mission to promote Aids awareness and research we support these two initiatives.

Michael Jackson: The man behind the legend

MJ-in-Oman-michael-jackson-11712630-346-603.jpg

MICHAEL Jackson was a legend who is sure to live in eternity. The whole world pursued him for his stardom and talent, but it was in Oman where he felt “truly at home”.

Michael came to Oman with plans for only three days but he went on to stay with us for 45 days. He loved Oman and its people. People treated him with love, just like a close friend. Michael was very impressed by the love and hospitality he got here which was sadly missing from his life.

Michael was highly impressed by Omani’s rich culture and many a times visited the Muttrah Souq. He bought several souvenirs from the souq and got quite friendly with the people. He visited the homes of many Omani families and spent a lot of time with them. He learned a lot about Omani lifestyle.

Michael spent a lot of time with us in our house. We often got together for lunch and he soon became a part of our family. He felt very comfortable here and shared a lot about his life and how people had treated him.

24w7x9v.jpg

A doting dad

During one of those days, Michael told us about his children and said he wanted them to get the same affection that he received here. He asked them to come to Oman. When they finally arrived, he hugged them and told them in the car, “Welcome home kids”. I told him: “Michael, be careful, I’ll quote this in the media.” He said, “I don’t care, I love being here.”

We didn’t ask him to say this. People in other places offered him so many things but still he felt being at home in Oman.

At home we had organised a party for his children to introduce them to our kids. My sisters prepared a cake for him and his children. It was very special as it had his kids’ names in Neverland and Peter Pan with Michael’s face saying, “Free to be me in Oman”. Michael had tears in his eyes and he told me, “I want to stay here.”

My nephew Talal Zubair is a big fan of Michael. At the party he organised a show and imitated Michael’s moves and jives. Michael was thrilled and his kids said, “Dad you have to take Talal with you on stage next time.”

Talal and Michael became very close and they used to talk over the phone most of the time. Talal was devastated when he heard the news. The entire family was.

I don’t care what the media says but Michael was a loving father and was very patient with his kids. He used to teach them new things most of the time. I don’t believe all the rumours that float in the media.

One day we went with the kids to watch a movie. On his way back, Michael asked his son who was sitting behind in the car, what he learned from the movie. The boy was very intelligent and Michael was challenging him with more and more questions. He wanted his kids to be brilliant and to live the childhood he never had.

Michael himself read a lot. We gave him books about Oman’s heritage, architecture, crafts and music. One day he called me at 7am to ask about the different dynasties in Oman, the forts and the history.

64162627_d3ea33cca0.jpg

The other side

Michael was very open and he loved people. Many people visited him at the hotel where he stayed and took pictures with him, but nobody took advantage of his global celebrity status. They did not release the photos in the media. That’s why he felt secure in Oman.

He loved Oman because people treated him like an ordinary person. He was happy to be here. He had travelled around the world and people used to tell him “Michael we love you.” Only in Oman they told him: “we love you and we want you to stay here”. Many people are very sad at such a great loss.

Michael was humble, generous and a true humanitarian. You would never believe what you hear or read about him if you had met him in person.

Sadly people around him took advantage of him.

Michael left Oman to go to the US when James Brown died. He was very sad but he promised to come back. He was planning to come to Oman in December this year to work with us.

He wanted to work especially with Dr Riyadh Hamzah to compose music and write poems together. I have a recording that says how much he wanted to live in Oman.

We will miss him a lot but he will always be in our hearts. I don’t think the world will ever have another Michael Jackson. He was one of a kind.

Thou Art

sweetman.jpg

The brightly-colored rainbow in a cloud-tossed, stormy sky
The whisper of the ocean as it goes rushing by
A puddled stretch of sand awash with the tide
The eerie, forlorn lament of sea gulls on the fly

The perfection of a shell all twisted and whorled
Picked up and treasured by a barefoot little girl
The crack of a gaily-colored flag in the wind all a-whirl
The colors of a pinwheel by a breath set a-twirl

A pink and gold sunset as the sun meets the sea
Shooting streamers of light stretch across the waves in beams
The star in the night sky, winking through the branches of a tree
Lightning bugs a-twinkle, chased by you and me

The full moon dancing over the horizon, dolphins breaching in mirth
Sparkling and twinkling in the moonlight with the motion of the surf
The laughter of the waves as the tide drenches the Earth
The melodies and rhymes as a song is given birth

The snowcapped mountain peak as it touches the blue
Snow glistening like diamond dust, sparkly and new
The blush of the rose petal still tightly curled
Too shy to peak out, too modest to unfurl

The heady scent of gardenia wafting lightly on air
Barely noticed by others with no time to spare
To my senses, a treat, a gift precious and so rare
I must take a moment, my gratitude to share

The softness of a newborn baby’s skin, wrinkled and red
Damp tufts of hair lying silky against a perfect head
The leap of joy when the heart hears that first cry
And croons the gentle tune of a favorite lullaby

Shafts of sunlight piercing a heavy gloom
Paths to the heavens creep across a darkened room
Like precious memories enlightening my mind
Anticipated moments with you I’m anxious to re-find

Thou art the strength of the lion, the grace of a cat
A snap of the fingers, a casual toss of a hat
The point of the toes, then spinning so fast
Landing on point, a moment to hold, forever to last

A weekend of quietude with a fascinating book
The forgotten treasure found hiding in the little used nook
Peaking from the place we neglected to look
Always in a hurry, Thou Art all the pleasures I overlook

Thou Art
Every beautiful sight my ancient eyes have seen
The music of a child’s laughter met by ears so keen
Every delicious flavor that has tickled my tongue
The pungent, the sweet, the salt since I was young

Thou Art
The whisper of satin against newly-clean flesh
The single tear shed as two hearts are enmeshed
The deeply felt sighs as two spirits embrace
The touch of love’s finger stroking my face

Thou Art
The peace of a winter evening enshrouded in snow
Lightened by flickering candles, the hearth all aglow
Boundless peace undisturbed, I am content to know
That love brings you back to me when I enter the flow

Thou Art
My LOVE
Always fresh, ever new
Ancient as the pyramids reborn as morning dew
You wrap me in your spirit, impale me with your glance
Pierce me with your gentle smile, inviting me to dance
Our LOVE across the heavens raining down upon the Earth
In you my heart beats with the tide patiently awaiting rebirth

Oak Ridge Boy Shares Memories of Michael Jackson

wlg-jacksons.jpg

The Oak Ridge Boys' William Lee Golden not only met Michael Jackson, he was serenaded by him. Upon hearing of the King of Pop's death on Thursday, Golden shared memories of their 1981 meeting at Nashville's Municipal Auditorium, where The Jackson 5 surprised Golden with a cover of the Oaks' biggest hit.

"The Jacksons were on the top of their game that night," Golden recalls. "They were incredible singers and dancers. Michael had an exceptional talent that shone the brightest. Backstage I was able to meet them all. They were very gracious. At that time, 'Elvira' was at the top of the pop charts, and to my surprise they sang 'Elvira' to me and my sons. It was an evening we will never forget."

Golden and his sons also performed that night, singing 'Happy Birthday' to Jackson, who'd just turned 23 years old.

"I was amazed to watch him over the years as he accomplished even higher achievements and became one of the world's greatest entertainers," says Golden. "Michael stood out as a fantastic talent. He had the whole ball of wax -- not only a great voice, but the ability, flexible ability, and dancing."

Veteran Harrison Funk is not your ordinary rock photographer.

Text: Aimstar; Photo: Harrison Funk

“Music has always been my life. I love the visual aspect of music. You can’t just listen to music without seeing something in everything and that’s what I strive to capture,” says veteran photographer Harrison Funk, who’s exclusive photographs make up this special tribute. “It’s that feeling of music behind the scenes, in front of the audience, why they make the music and how they make the music—the flavor of what they feel must portray to their fans.”

Over the course of his 20 + year career, he’s photographed them all —from Madonna, Nelson Mandela, U2, Ice-T and others—the best and the up and coming in music, lifestyle, politics, fashion and entertainment, and reportage. And in 1983, he began his work on The Jacksons Victory tour, which eventually led him to become Michael Jackson’s personal photographer. “Michael must have been the most energetic artist I have ever worked with in my life and also the most inspiring. Michael’s energy was always incredible. Shooting Michael was one of the greatest experiences of my life,” Harrison said.

Looking at his photographs, what becomes most obvious about Harrison is that he is a master of motion. Going far beyond simple portraits, his visual works reflect the depth of his relationships with his subjects, in that he was able to penetrate their feelings as they peaked and mirror back in film their most human nature. “That’s the creative synergy that I’m talking about. With Michael, or like with any other client, I just watch, study and anticipated or even pre-anticipated [his moves]. You become one with the artist’s motion.” He continued, “You do behind the lens what he’s doing in front of the audience. It’s a synergistic ability that is created by knowing the artist and working well with them.”

"Heal the World" Helps Heal the World

Major Love Prayer says: "What do you think the effect would be if MUSIC promoting PEACE & BROTHERHOOD were played loudly in areas gripped by violence & mean-spirited rioting? What if 'We Are the World' & 'Give Peace a Chance' were blasted from rooftops? Can one beat another human, smash windows or set fires to the tune of 'Heal the World'? Would it make a difference? Just thinking out loud."

1262722043-dangerous105.jpg

Tobias Greitemeyer, a psychologist at the University of Sussex, has a recent study showing that listening to music with "pro-social" lyrics like "Heal the World" or "Help!" actually makes teenagers more helpful.

His experiments took groups of students and split them at random into those who listened individually either to socially-conscious songs or those with a neutral message, and then used various ways to measure the apparent effect. In one, after the music had stopped, a researcher "accidentally" knocked a cup of pencils from a table and paused briefly before beginning to collect them.

On average, those who had heard songs like Michael Jackson's Heal the World responded more quickly and picked up almost five times as many pencils as people in the other group.

If you happen to have a subscription to the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin you can read the full paper here. Tobias describes his results thusly:

In four studies, listening to songs with prosocial, relative to neutral, lyrics increased helping behavior. This effect was mediated by interpersonal empathy.

This reminds me of those studies that seem to show that people who study economic theories depicting people as self-interested come to view self-interested behavior more favorably as a result, and come to behave more self-interestedly themselves.

I'm not going to stop listening to The Pixies and Radiohead, but this study is a nice reminder of the general point that ideas of selflessness-often dismissed by "realists" as naive-actually make selfless acts more likely.

A Brand New Day

My friend Marjolein Lukas makes the most beautiful paintings.Inspired by Michael and his message of joy, peace, love and unity she creates works of art. She asked me to write something to go along with the painting and I wrote a children's poem about a little caterpillar undergoing a transformation into a beautiful butterfly.

A-Brand-New-Day1.jpg

A Brand New Day

One day, as caterpillar, I dreamed I could fly
I know this cannot be true, it must be a lie.
But I really did see myself high in the sky!
maybe a brand new day will make my dream come true
with the sun shining down brightly, colors changing hue

A brand new day is going to come, feel it in the air
today it’s still raining, tomorrow the Gloved One will be there
guiding me through the much needed change
my head starts spinning and I feel strange
wait, what is happening, why is it getting dark ?
Am I still a little caterpillar on an apple in the park ?

I am confused now, don’t know which way is up
help me, is this still a dream, I need to wake up!
So where do I go from here, it’s dark now and still
inside me I feel a change coming, such a thrill!
better ask the Scarecrow for some sound advice
he looks pretty foolish but is actually very wise!

The rain is gone now, all is wet with tiny drops of dew
as the sun peeks from behind a cloud,
another day is forming, gently, softly and brand new
Joy erupts from the heavens, a rainbow is here.
The Gloved One whispers Rainbows are signs of joy and of love
Newborn butterfly dry your wings and fly high above!
Believe in your dreams as they may come true
Joy may come again, even if you’re feeling blue!

MJ and the Flintstone Kids

1988 - Seventeen years after the Jackson 5ive cartoon series first aired, Michael was a cartoon again. Michael lent his song, "Beat It" to be used in a Flinstone Kids cartoon special called The Flinstone Kids "Just Say No," encouraging kids to say no to drugs.

In it, little Fred, Barney, Wilma, and Betty work odd jobs to earn enough money for tickets to a Michael Jackstone concert. When Wilma refuses to use marijuana in order to join a "cool crowd", the Flintstone Kids and their friends start a campaign against drugs while trying to get tickets to a Michael Jackstone concert. They finally make it to the concert and see Michael Jackstone singing new lyrics to "Beat It" about not needing drugs.

In the cartoon, Stone Age Michael, voiced by Kipp Lennon, wears one glove and dons sunglasses. He moonwalks, and even grabs his crotch while dancing!

The Flintstone kids need to raise money in order to buy tickets to see Michael Jackstone (obvious reference) in concert. While attempting to raise money from teamwork, some older kids try to push drugs on our young role models. After failing to raise the money, the kids enter a race whose grand prize is tickets to see Jackstone. The older drug users also enter the race, expecting to crush our heroes. The effects of high drug abuse is shown when the Flintstone kids win the race due to the poor health of the drug users.

Just Say No!
(Lyrics)

They told the girl
Why don't you step over here
You wanna be cool
Take a look in here
They wanna do drugs
And they're words are really clear
So beat it!
You don't need it!
(Say no!)
You don't need friends
Doing things that are wrong
There's lots of kids like you
Who are cool and strong
It might be kinda tough
But you can move along
So beat it!
And say it ain't fair

Don't mean it!
Don't need it!
Just say no to drugs
Defeat it!

Have a life that's happy
A future that's bright
You make it happen
Drugs are wrong
And you're right
Just beat it!
Just beat it!
Say no
And defeat it!
Now Moms and Dads
You ought to listen to me
To be a kid today
It ain't easy
Just make your home and family
A loving place to be
So beat it!
Send it riding wave!

On this day of your life, dear friend, I believe God wants you to know...

...that there are choirs singing in your head. If you listen, you will hear the music. It is the song of angels. Pay no attention to the sounds of the world. They are just noises, and even when added up all together they have no value, make no sense. Strain to hear the song of angels. Listen to the melody within your soul. This message is a metaphor. You know exactly what it is trying to tell you.

Beautiful, sweet story... He is forever Peter Pan!!

Michael with Famous People: Actress Jane Fonda. 5 March, 1984

It was Jane Fonda who originally connected Michael with “Peter Pan.” When Michael visited Jane on the set of “On Golden Pond,” Michael became very friendly with Henry Fonda. Jane noticed, and says, “Dad was also painfully self conscious and shy in life, and he really only felt comfortable when he was behind the mask of a character. He could liberate himself only when he was being someone else. That’s a lot like Michael.

“In some ways Michael reminds me of the walking wounded. He’s an extremely fragile person. I think that just getting on with life, making contact with people, is hard enough, much less to be worried about whither goest the world.

“I remember driving with him one day, and I said, ‘God, Michael, I wish I could find a movie I could produce for you.’ And suddenly I knew. I said, ‘I know what you’ve got to do. It’s “Peter Pan.’”

“Tears welled up in his eyes and he said, ‘Why did you say that?’ with this ferocity. I said, ‘I realize you’re Peter Pan.’ And he started to cry and said, ‘You know, all over the walls of my room are pictures of Peter Pan. I’ve read everything that Barrie wrote. I totally identify with Peter Pan, the lost boy of Never-Neverland.’

“Oh, I can see him leading lost children into a world of fantasy and magic. From Gary, straight on to Barrie!” Fonda exclaims.

MICHAEL JACKSON FANS UNITED FOR FAMINE RELIEF

1050.966697207.custom.jpeg

Michael Jackson was the largest humanitarian donor in the world

We ask that all of you do what could be considered the greatest tribute to a humanitarian like Michael Jackson:

Donate to help famine relief in the Horn of Africa.

In the spirit of Michael Jackson and the effort, that he and a group of artists started 26 years ago with We Are the World, we encourage you all to go the extra mile and donate.

We think this is one tribute, Michael Jackson, without a doubt, would be very proud of.

You can give a TRIBUTE DONATION in Memory of Michael Jackson or in the Spirit of We Are The World!

To donate , join the Team at the left of the page and follow the links! Thanks!

UNICEF has called the situation across the Horn of Africa the "most severe humanitarian emergency in the world." Nearly 720,000 children are at risk of death without urgent assistance in the Horn of Africa. In total 2.23 million children in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia are estimated to be acutely malnourished.

Funds raised will help UNICEF provide

* Emergency relief supplies;
* Therapeutic treatment for children and women with severe malnutrition;
* Access to clean drinking water and
* Vaccinations to prevent deadly diseases like measles and polio, as malnourished children are at increased risk of deadly disease.

Children—the most vulnerable population in any disaster—as is too often the case, are most likely to suffer the consequences.

In all emergencies, UNICEF focuses first on the survival of the children—which means providing health care, water and sanitation, and adequate nutrition.

UNICEF is also there to bring immediate protection to children who have been abandoned or separated from their families. And UNICEF works to get children back to school as soon as possible, to help them recover from the psychological distress associated with emergencies.

Millions of children suffer each year, victims of natural disasters and conflict emergencies. Humanitarian aid is crucial to support children. But with the number of people affected by disaster growing every year, more emergency relief funding is needed to help vulnerable communities prepare for disasters before they occur and to protect children when disasters do occur.

Please donate now!

(On the actual website you can see how much money has been raised and how much more is still needed to reach the intended goal. If you give what you can give, from the heart, a child or multiple children can be saved ~ MJJLaugh)

Michael Jackson's Art and Studio, Revealed for the First Time
By Sophie Duvernoy Wed., Aug. 17 2011

MJ1.jpg

The interior of Michael Jackson's art studio, which he shared with friend and artist Brett-Livingstone Strong

Until now, Michael Jackson's art collection was shrouded in mystery. It was said to be stuck in a legal dispute over possession. Then, people speculated that buyers such as Cirque du Soleil's Guy Laliberté were interested. It's been valued at the staggering (and slightly unbelievable) sum of $900 million.

One crucial fact: Jackson's art collection isn't art by other people -- it's mainly drawings and paintings that he created himself. So what does that art look like?

Yesterday, LA Weekly was the first to visit the (until now) top-secret Santa Monica Airport hangar that Jackson used as his studio and art storehouse. The collection is currently owned by Brett-Livingstone Strong, the Australian monument builder and Jackson's art mentor through the years, in conjunction with the Jackson estate.

Though the entire art collection has been mired in disputes and battles for rights, Strong claims that he is working with everybody -- the family, the estate, as well as others -- to exhibit and publish as much of Jackson's work as possible.

According to Strong, he and Jackson formed an incorporated business partnership in 1989, known as the Jackson-Strong alliance. This gave each partner a fifty-percent stake in the other's art. In 2008, Strong says, Jackson requested that his attorney sign the rights to Jackson's portion of the art over to Strong. Now, Strong is beginning to reveal more and more of the art as he goes ahead with Jackson's dream of organizing a museum exhibit.

MJ2.jpg

Some of Jackson's original drawings hanging on the wall. Prints of these were donated to the L.A. Children's Hospital.

Strong gave us a tour of the hangar, beginning with the Michael Jackson monument that Strong and Jackson co-designed several years ago. It's perhaps bombastic, but designed with good intentions and the rabid Jackson fan in mind. Strong explains, "He wanted his fans to be able to get married at a monument that would have all of his music [in an archive, and playing on speakers], to inspire some of his fans."

The current design is still in the works, but it's conceived as an interactive monument -- fans who buy a print by Jackson will receive a card in the mail. They can scan this card at the monument, and then have a computer organize a personal greeting for them, or allow them to book it for weddings. Jackson initially thought it would be perfect for Las Vegas, but Strong says that Los Angeles might have the honor of hosting it -- apparently, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa recently paid a visit and made a few oblique promises.

MJ3.jpg

As for Jackson's art, the contents of the hangar barely scratched the surface of the collection, as Strong estimates Jackson's total output at 150 to 160 pieces. A few large pieces hanging on the walls had been donated as reproductions to the L.A. Children's Hospital last Monday, along with other sketches and poems.

MJ5.jpg

Portrait of Bubbles, Jackson's beloved pet chimpanzee

In all of his art, certain motifs kept cropping up: chairs (usually quite baroque), gates, keys and the number 7. His portrait of Bubbles, his pet chimpanzee, shows a monkey-like face vanishing into a cushy, ornate lounge chair. "He loved chairs," says Strong. "He thought chairs were the thrones of most men, women and children, where they made their decisions for their daily activity. He was inspired by chairs. Rather than just do a portrait of the monkey, he put it in the chair. And you see, there are a few sevens -- because he's the seventh child."

Jackson, who was a technically talented artist -- and completely self-taught -- fixated on these motifs, elevating everyday objects into cult symbols. Strong added that Jackson's sketchbooks are completely filled with studies of his favorite objects, in endless permutations.

MJ6.jpg

MJ's portrait of George Washington -- he initially planned to do a series of all of the presidents, but never continued it.

But Jackson also created portraits: a small sketch of Paul McCartney, and a large drawing of George Washington, created as Strong was working with the White House to commemorate the bicentennial of the Constitution back in 1987. He also sketched self-portraits -- one as a humorous four-panel drawing charting his growing-up process, and a darker one that depicts him as a child cowering in a corner, inscribed with a sentence reflecting on his fragility.

MJ7.jpg

Strong, holding up a four-panel sketch that Jackson drew of himself.

As an artist, Jackson preferred using wax pencils, though Strong adds, "He did do a lot of watercolors but he gave them away. He was a little intimidated by mixing colors." Some surviving pencils are archived in the hangar; Strong moves over to a cabinet on the far wall of the hangar and pulls out a ziploc bag containing a blue wax pencil, a white feathered quill and a white glove that Jackson used for drawing.

Jackson turned to art as times got hard for him. "His interest in art, in drawing it, was just another level of his creativity that went on over a long period of time," Strong says. "It was quite private to him. I think he retreated into it when he was being attacked by those accusations against him." The sketches and drawings certainly reveal an extremely sensitive creator, though it's clear that Jackson also had a sense of humor.

Jackson's art was kept under wraps for such a long time simply because of the pedophilia scandal, which erupted right around the time that he was looking for a way to publicize the works. "A lot of his art was going to be exhibited 18 years ago. Here's one of his tour books, where he talks about exhibiting art. He didn't want it to be a secret," Strong says, pointing at a leaflet from the 1992 Dangerous World Tour.

MJ8.jpg

Strong and Jackson wearing matching leather and velvet jackets, celebrating their artistic alliance.

Prior to that period, Jackson and Strong had met and become fast friends. This marked the beginning of Strong's mentorship, in which he encouraged Jackson to create bigger paintings and drawings, and exhibit his work. The idea behind their Jackson-Strong Alliance was that Strong would help Jackson manage and exhibit his art. Notably, the alliance birthed Strong's infamous $2 million portrait of Michael Jackson entitled The Book, the only known portrait Jackson ever sat for.

In 1993, everything blew up. At the time, Jackson and Strong were both on the board of Big Brothers of Los Angeles (now known as Big Brothers Big Sisters), a chapter of the national youth mentoring organization established in L.A. by Walt Disney and Meredith Willson. They had planned out a fundraising campaign involving Jackson's art. Strong explains, "We thought that if we would market [his art] in limited edition prints to his fans, he could support the charities that he wanted to, rather than have everybody think that he was so wealthy he could afford to finance everybody." When the pedophilia scandal erupted, Disney put a freeze on the project. The artwork stayed put, packed away from public eyes in storage crates.

MJ9.jpg

Jackson's sketch of the Wright Brothers' first flight, which he hoped to donate to the Santa Monica airport.

As for the spectacular appraisal of $900 million for Jackson's art collection, Strong says that it derives from the idea of reproducing prints as well. The figure was originally quoted by Eric Finzi, of Belgo Fine Art Appraisers. "The reason somebody came out with that was because there was an appraisal on if all of his originals were reproduced -- he wanted to do limited editions of 777 -- and he would sell them to his fan base in order to build his monument, support kids and do other things. You multiply that by 150 originals, and if they sold for a few thousand dollars each, then you would end up with 900 million dollars." Fair enough, though now Strong says he has gone to an appraiser in Chicago to get that value double-checked, and they arrived at an even higher estimate.

The story of Jackson's art ends up being quite a simple one, though confused by so much hearsay and rumor. Strong and the Jackson estate will slowly reveal more works as time passes, and an exhibit is tentatively planned for L.A.'s City Hall. Negotiations with museums for a posthumous Jackson retrospective are still underway, but Strong has high hopes. He's even talking of building a Michael Jackson museum that would house all of Jackson's artwork.

MJ10.jpg

Jackson's sketch of the White House doors, to which he added the following quote from John Adams: "I pray heaven to bestow the best of blessings on this house and all that shall inhabit it. May none but honest and wise men [MJ's addition:] or women rule under this roof."

We'll leave you with Strong's own description of Jackson at work, during the time where they shared a studio in a house in Pacific Palisades:

He was in a very light and happy mood most of the time. He would have the oldies on, and sometimes he'd hear some of his Jackson Five songs. He'd kind of move along to that, but most of the time he would change it and listen to a variety of songs. He liked classical music. His inspiration to create was that he loved life, and wanted to express his love of life in some of these simple compositions.

I came to the studio one day, and we had a Malamute. I came into the house, and I heard this dog barking and thought, Wow, I wonder what that is. I go into the kitchen, and I couldn't help but laugh when I see Michael up in the pots and pans in the middle of the center island. He's holding a pen and paper and the dog is running around the island and barking at him, and he says, "He wants to play! He wants to play!" He's laughing, and I'm laughing about it as I'm thinking to myself, "I'm wondering how long he's been up there."

Michael Jackson's dedication to art: so strong that he'll end up perched on a kitchen island.

Flashback Of The Week! Dinner With Michael Jackson

f964ddc910acbc5c426350c1b152e08d_L.jpg

About 10 years ago I had the privilege of having dinner with the "king of pop" Michael Jackson. The dinner took place at the home of our close friend's Al and Nancy Malnik. Michael was such a sweet guy and for some reason fell in love with the Dolce and Gabbana pants I was wearing. He asked me if he can try them on. Of course I was not going to deny the king of pop, so I immediately went to the bathroom and exchanged pants. Michael was so happy and excited about the pants that he kept them! In the picture shown above, Michael is wearing my pants and I'm wearing his pants.

LOL Who Else could shop like Michael but Michael? Well I think she got a great deal out of this too.

I have this book from my grandmothers collection and if I remember correctly, it's signed. (but maybe it was a different book that was signed...gonna have to look tomorrow)
Kahlil Gibran on Buying and Selling

Kahlil Gibran is the author of the book called "The Prophet". In each chapter he touches on a different area of life, for the reader to contemplate. Recently I read the following chapter:

The highlighted part moved me very much and instantly made me think of Michael. His music is food and garment for our soul for sure!

Just read and ponder these lyrics of "Heal the World"

"Heal the World
Make it a better place
For you and for me
and the entire human race
there are people dying
if you care enough
for the living
Make it a better place
for you and for me.

And the dream we were
conceived in
will reveal a joyful face
and the world we
once believed in
will shine again in grace
then why do we keep
strangling life
wound this earth
crucify its soul
though it's plain to see
this world is heavenly
Be Gods Glow"

and these lyrics of "Another Part of Me"

"We're sending out
a major love
and this is our
Message to you
(Message to you)
the planets are linin' up
we're bringing brighter days
they're all in line
waitin' for you
Can't you see....?
You're just another part of me"

When I read the lyrics of Heal the world with attention in what was really said, it hit me and I heard the beckoning loud and clear, so I wiped away my single tear, smiling at the white butterfly and graceful dragonfly that flew by in my garden, my resolve to make a difference for the better was strengthened once more. While the artist may be gone, the message lives on.
Living my life for the highest good, the well-being of the Earth, nature, the animals and the people inhabiting her, that is us!, I feel blessed and loved and I want to put love back into the world, as the world needs it so badly.
To me that is the best and most honorable way to celebrate Michael's life and legacy!

THE ESTATE OF MICHAEL JACKSON REMEMBERS FRANK DILEO

FDiLeo-MJ.jpg

As many of you know, Michael’s longtime friend and manager Frank Dileo had been dealing with serious health issues for the past several months. It is with great sadness that we share with you the news that Frank lost his long struggle this morning and passed away at the age of 63.

Frank had an amazing amount of creative energy, a huge heart, an infectious spirit and a larger than life persona that captured the attention of any room he entered. He also cared deeply about Michael, his children and his fans.

Michael-Jackson-Frank-Dileo.jpg

Frank and Michael became friends when Frank was vice president for promotion at Epic Records during the release of "Thriller." In his best-selling book "Moonwalk," Michael wrote: "Frank really worked hard and proved to be my right hand during the years ahead. His brilliant understanding of the recording industry proved invaluable."

Frank went on to manage the incredibly successful Bad World Tour. Even after they stopped working together professionally, the bond between Michael and Frank remained and the family friendship continued. In early 2009, Frank was reunited with Michael once again as his manager as preparations began for the "This Is It" concerts.

After Michael’s passing, Frank proved invaluable to the Executors of his Estate, sharing unique insights that nobody else could possibly have.

Branca-MJ-Dileo-web_1.jpg

Said John Branca, Co-Executor of the Michael Jackson Estate: "I had the privilege of knowing Frank Dileo for more than two decades. He was not only one of the great veterans of the music business, he was a beloved friend to me and all who were lucky enough to have had him in their lives. He was one of a kind. He was a character. He was an original. We loved him, and we will miss him. Our hearts are with his family."

Our thoughts and prayers are with Frank’s wife, Linda, his son Dominic, his daughter, Belinda, his grandchildren and all of his extended family and loved ones.

Farewell "Tookie"

moonwalker.jpg

You have to laugh at Michael Jackson’s wry sense of humor and how he was often caught hiding things in plain sight. In the movie Moonwalker, the drug dealing villain is “Frank Li Deo.” Li Deo is a classic bad guy figure with an unusual haircut and a mafioso style.

Frank-DiLeo-Mr-Big.jpg

I think we can be pretty certain this is a parody of Frank Di Leo who managed Michael Jackson in the eighties and returned to manage him at Michael’s last enterprise– This Is It. There are so few truly loyal friends in Michael Jackson’s life because so many sold him out for cash and their 15 minutes of fame. But there are a few… and Frank Di Leo appears to be one of them. Di Leo was present during Michael’s darkest hours– during the 2005 trial. It is said that Di Leo was there every day.

He is not without criticism because there were those who worried about the kind of exposure Di Leo encouraged and permitted in Michael’s early success years. He certainly could play hard ball and there was more than a tinge of cynicism about him. And isn’t that just going to be true of anyone who must deal with the “Hollywood factor.” How much is enough? How far do you push the envelope? And in the “Hollywood” fashion, everything appears fickle– perhaps even loyalty.” How would one know if not living it?

Whatever happened to break up this team that once set the world and the charts on fire, in the end all must have been forgiven because Di Leo was back in Michael Jackson’s life at he end of his life. It is reported that it was Di Leo whom was with the children when they were told the awful truth about their father.

By all accounts, Di Leo was a colorful character. Bold and maybe even a bit reckless, he was a feature in the Payola scandal that clouded the early record business. He was nevertheless beloved by friends and clients when often a love-hate relationship characterizes such dealings where friendship and business acumen collide. The perpetual “cigar” was Di Leo’s trademark.

Di Leo’s career is wider than most realize. He was not just Michael Jackson’s manager; he managed many up and coming, and “arrived” stars of the music business. He produced the film Moonwalker, and after meeting Martin Scorcese during the filming of “Bad,” he was offered a role as mafia hit man in GoodFellas:

Thanks to the fan who put this together. Nicely done.

AP Frank Di Leo Obituary Los Angeles

Dileo-and-MJ-Leave-me-alone.jpg

Music industry executive Frank Dileo, who managed Michael Jackson’s career in the 1980s and returned as his manager in the superstar’s final days, died Wednesday. He was 63.

Publicist Karen Sundell said Dileo died in the morning. The cause of death was not immediately available, but he had recently experienced complications following heart surgery.

The short, portly Dileo was a colorful figure in the entertainment industry and had movie roles as an actor, notably portraying a gangster in Martin Scorsese’s GoodFellas.

A native of Pittsburgh, Dileo began his career in the music industry working as a promoter for CBS subsidiary Epic Records. He signed so many stars that he was credited with catapulting the small company to the No. 2 label in the country. Jackson was at CBS Records at the time and together they worked on the phenomenally successful “Thriller” album.

In his book “Moonwalk,” Jackson credited Dileo as one of the people “responsible for turning my dream for ‘Thriller’ into a reality.”

Jackson wrote that Dileo’s “brilliant understanding of the recording industry proved invaluable” and described how Dileo decided to release “Beat It” as a single while “Billie Jean” was still the No. 1 song in the country.

“CBS screamed ‘You’re crazy. This will kill Billie Jean,’” Jackson recalled. “But Frank told them not to worry, that both songs would be No. 1 and both would be in the Top 10 at the same time. They were.”

In 1984, with “Thriller” soaring, Jackson recruited Dileo to leave Epic and manage his career. Dileo accepted and presided over one of the most productive periods for Jackson.

He executive-produced the full-length Jackson movie, “Moonwalker.” He also wrote, produced and negotiated a series of lucrative Pepsi commercials for Jackson.

And he managed two of Jackson’s concert tours — the Victory Tour with other members of the Jackson family and the Bad World Tour, Jackson’s first solo excursion which became the largest grossing concert tour of all time.

After five years together, Dileo and Jackson abruptly ended their business relationship without explanation.

Dileo went on to manage the careers of other musicians, including Taylor Dayne, Jodeci, Laura Branigan and Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora. He also worked with Prince on several projects.

He founded Dileo Entertainment Group in Nashville, Tenn., a company focused on launching the careers of young artists.

In 2005, when Jackson stood trial on child molestation charges, Dileo returned to his side. He later described their emotional reunion. After Jackson’s acquittal, they remained in touch and in the summer of 2009, as Jackson prepared to launch his This is It tour, the singer asked Dileo to manage him again. They were working together when Jackson died on June 25, 2009.

John Branca, co-executor of the Jackson estate, said he had the privilege of knowing Dileo for more than two decades.

“He was not only one of the great veterans of the music business, he was a beloved friend to me and all who were lucky enough to have had him in their lives. He was one of a kind,” Branca said, and “we will miss him.”

Dileo is survived by his wife, Linda; two children, Belinda and Dominic; and a grandson, Frank.

——————————————

Frank DiLeo was a good friend to Michael Jackson and someone whom never abandoned a friend in his greatest hour of need. The fans have been writing that they are very sad and very upset and they send condolences to his family. I have it from credible sources that Tookie was met at the gate with a giant cuban cigar and was ushered in by an angel on one side and a skinny little Moonwalker on the other. May they both rest in peace. Another one gone too soon.

Love is all there is

I believe that when we pass, the outcome of that life left behind is measured, or viewed in terms of love. Because love is all there is. We came into this world with nothing and we will leave this world with nothing. So, that big house, or that funky car, or that prized collection, it all means nothing in the end. What has true meaning and everlasting value is the print we leave on the hearts of others. The love we share, the caring, listening not talking is what has value.
Michael knew that like no other and he lived his life, leaving a lasting impression on the hearts of millions. That is what I tried to show with these videos. I hope you like them!
