DVD set captures Brown's charisma

The late James Brown, who may still be the hardest-working man in show business, gets the deluxe treatment with "I Got the Feelin: James Brown in the '60s," a triple-DVD set that documents a transitional time for Brown, as he was moving from rhythm & blues and soul to a harder-edged funk, a time when he was known as Soul Brother Number One.

Shot in black and white, by a crew accustomed to filming classical music concerts, this is James Brown for the ages. His control over the band, and ultimately his control over the audience, are captured in a manner that almost has the feel of a documentary. The soul and funk of "Get It Together," "There Was a Time" and others capture the rhythmic innovations that have made him one of the most influential artists in American music. And his dancing ... there would have been no Michael Jackson, no Prince, without there first having been James Brown.

Dusty Is No1 After 40 Yrs

Hit Tops Playlist
DUSTY Springfield's hit Son Of A Preacher Man was yesterday named Britain's favourite song of all time - 40 years after it was released.
Researchers have named the top 10 songs Britons would have on a playlist of favourites.
The choices reveal Britons are a nation of rebellious underdogs hanging on to their youth, said one music psychologist.
Springfield's hit only reached No9 in the charts when it was released in 1968.
But in the survey for phone firm Nokia, the pop singer beat The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra to the No1 spot.
Psychologist Dr Aleksander Aksentijevic said Dusty's song "conveys a sense of empowerment, rebellion, urban sophistication and symbolises the new Britain at ease with itself."
In second place were The Rolling Stones with their "rebellious and evocative" song, Paint It Black, while at No 3 was Queen's "unrestrained" Bohemian Rhapsody, which "appeals to libertarians".
The other songs in the playlist were Hey Jude by The Beatles, Angels by Robbie Williams, My Way by Frank Sinatra, Thriller by Michael Jackson, I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin's Respect and Suspicious Minds by Elvis Presley.

The survey of 2000 people also revealed differences between UK cities.
Glasgow's favourite was the Sinatra classic My Way, signifying "underdogs who fight in spite of difficult odds", while people in Manchester and Liverpool put Angels - a song about vulnerability - in their top three.

The King holds court in Tel Aviv

From the moment he walked into the Shelah Lounge in Tel Aviv's Dan Hotel on Monday, Don King exuded his trademark eccentricity.

His hair was as white as snow and pointing straight towards the heavens. He sported a denim jacket covered with glittered stars and stripes, marine pins and, on the left shoulder, an enormous airbrushed picture of his own face. Moreover, he seemed to enjoy the entire room of people examining and laughing at it.

"Everyone is gonna sue you, there gonna do everything because they can. You've got to know going in what it is you're up against."
Don King's resume is a lengthy one. He has promoted big names such as Ali, Tyson and even Michael Jackson. At 77, he remains a hard working important figure in the sport of boxing.

Halloween isn’t just for kids, there are plenty of bashes for adults to enjoy, too

While children are out trick-or-treating or making their way through haunted houses tonight, those with no young candy-seekers to accompany also can have plenty of fun.

It’s not only Halloween, it’s Friday, a day when most look to unwind after the workweek, so the adult crowd has even more options than usual.
A number of establishments have planned Halloween-themed bashes – one even organized a ball, complete with dancing -- with music and special pricing.

Performers will tell tales such as “Suscon Scream,” about the eeriness of Suscon Road in Pittston, or about the well-known Smurl family, formerly of Pittston, who claimed demons haunted their Chase Street home in 1986.
Visitors also can dance to the beat of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” win prizes such as ski passes and enjoy dinner.
“You can stay there for hours if you want,” Niemiec said.

GHOULS RUSH IN

DANCERS SET 'THRILLER' RECORD

The Post's Sara Lieberman joins 72 other NYC zombies re-enacting the "Thriller" dance.
NO mere mortal can resist . . . a "Thriller" re-enactment.
I was just a pretty, young, 4-year-old thing in 1983 when Michael Jackson's 13-minute video became a groundbreaking phenomenon. But the Gloved One's song quickly made its way into my basement dance routine.
PHOTOS: Dancers Set 'Thriller' Record
showvideo("NY%20Post","1458_413352");
On any given night after dinner, I'd drop the needle on my record, slip my hand into a rhinestoned glove and get down. I thought, for sure, I was good enough to be one of his backup dancers.
Well, yesterday I came close. Along with 72 other "grisly ghouls," we broke the Guinness World Record for the most zombies dancing in one location, which was held by 62 Canadians from Toronto.

While 73 may not sound like a big number compared to the hundreds of smooth criminals who, wearing orange jumpsuits, performed a rendition at the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center in the Philippines, it is official. After all, there are rules to rousing the dead, thrusting pelvises and breaking records.
According to Guinness, two witness statements, media coverage, video footage, color photos and a logbook of participants and their signatures are needed to qualify.

Even members of "Thrill the World," a fan group that just days ago gathered 4,179 people from 10 nations (Australia, Canada, England, Germany, Ireland, Saudi Arabia, New Zealand, Scotland, the United States and Wales) to simultaneously perform the dance, may not qualify with Guinness. They did, however, set a record with Record Holders Re public.

Here in New York, though, with a to-do list on site, fans showed up at Madame Tus sauds wax museum at about 8 a.m. Some came in work clothes, others wore full zombie attire; a few even rocked Michael Jackson look-alike garb, complete with Jheri curl and aviators. Dance instructors from Crunch Fitness were on hand to teach moves like "The Claw," "The Dip Pop" and "The Out of Grave."

As for me, in my corpse-bride gown, with teased hair, black lips and sunken gray eyes, I was zombified, all right. But once the sound of that creaky door and howling wolf played overhead, the terror was replaced by one killer smile.

Michael Jackson Squashes Rumors of a Jackson 5 Tour
Originally posted Friday October 31, 2008 07:30 AM EDT

Don't believe the hype!

Jermaine Jackson made headlines earlier this week, when he hinted that the original members of the Jackson 5 were ready for a comeback album and tour.

Alas, Michael Jackson quickly debunked the reunion talk.

"My brothers and sisters have my full love and support, and we've certainly shared many great experiences," the King of Pop said in a statement released by his rep, identified as "Dr. Tohme." "But at this time I have no plans to record or tour with them."

"I am now in the studio developing new and exciting projects that I look forward to sharing with my fans in concert soon," he continued.

Jackson has been "in L.A. working ... and meeting with people like will.i.am," confirmed one music source, adding, "From what I hear, it's going really well."

MJ denying that he is reuniting from his brothers is spreading like crazy. Here is one from people.com:

Ain't that something. And the funny thing is, I'm not sure this news is spreading because of the "rumor" being squashed or if it's being spread because the MEDIA is excited that MJ actually released a statement and is, in a way, speaking to them. LOL!

I mean, look how EXCITED they were the other day, when he went to the store. LOL!

Oh and this story is now also on Billboard.com's FRONT page.

Michael Jackson and Kids Book it to Borders

Making the most of the Halloween holiday season, Michael Jackson was spotted taking his three kids trick-or-treating out in Hollywood, California last night.

The “King of Pop” escorted Michael Joseph, Paris Michael Katherine, and Prince Michael Jackson II to collect some delicious candy, stopping at Borders in Westwood on the way.

And in the midst of rumors that the Jackson 5 would be getting back together for a record and tour, Michael said that he’s not up for it after all.

“My brothers and sisters have my full love and support, and we’ve certainly shared many great experiences, but at this time I have no plans to record or tour with them.”

Earlier this week, Jermaine had a contradictory story that the Jacksons were all getting together again. “It is going to be more like a family affair. (Younger sister) Janet’s going to open and, of course, the original Jackson 5 ... Michael, Randy and the whole family. ... We’re in the studio, we’re planning on being out there next year.”

“King of Pop”

Why it gotta be in quotes? I mean, damn, haters. LOL. The children going to Borders - good. Now, Mike need to get the discount card. :) Borders is a good book store. ;)

Big Apple - I think the media is just happy to report the denial. To set the record straight. However, I am starting to think, like you mentioned, that maybe the statement is spreading because the media is happy to hear from Mike. I am kinda liking this. Mike releasing all of the sudden statements is really cool to me. :)

Re: October 31 - 02 Halloween weekend mentionings

how MTV is helping to line Michael's pockets:

http://kotaku.com/5071831/beatles-deal-cost-mtv-a-ton-of-money-maybe-too-much

Beatles Deal Cost MTV A Ton Of Money (Maybe Too Much)

beatles_01.jpg
Signing the Beatles (or at least the people handling their song rights) to a music game can't have been easy for MTV. And it definitely can't have been cheap. While not disclosing just how much MTV paid them for the rights to the Fab Four's tunes, Martin Bandier - who is CEO of Sony/ATV Music Publishing - has said:

There have been mutterings from artists and songwriters that they are not being offered their fair share in videogames, but the gamemakers have the leverage. In the world of rock, there are thousands of tracks that will work, but when you get into the world of unique artists, that leverage shifts, tremendously, to the artists and songwriters. We signed a deal that would be considered very rich by the videogame company but fair for the artists. It will have online implications that will be enormous.
In other words, they paid a lot more money than any other music game has ever paid. And obviously a lot more than Bobby "What, Me Worry?" Kotick would ever be willing to pay. Or, perhaps more importantly, set a precedent

some poetic justice.............???

Re: October 31 - Nov 02 Halloween weekend mentionings

but I've thought if it is Halloween EVERY store has some candy for the kids trick-or-treating?!

Like it is in Germany on Santa Claus, 6th of December???

Rasta Pasta, can we say, "ain't that some mess?" LOL. MTV paying Mike and Martin some $$$$$ to get the Beatles songs on games is really something else. Thanks for posting this great information.

Honey, I am sitting here with a big smile on my face. Michael is a part of EVERYBODY'S budget nowadays!

We have seen him walking around the last couple of days looking all happy and stuff. I'm sure "part" of his happiness comes from looking at the Sony/ATV financial spreadsheets. LOL!

CORBLEU TELLS ABOUT MEETING MICHAEL

Corbin Bleu (Corbin Bleu Reivers), an US actor known for his roles in the 'High School Musical' series, appeared on the US tv show 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' and spoke about what it was like meeting Michael Jackson.

Jimmy Kimmel: When you were a kid did you have somebody that you idolized?? In the way that these kids go crazy for you and your coworkers.

Corbin Bleu: Yes. Michael Jackson! My mom is a huge eighties fan. And I pretty much grew up listening to Michael in the womb. She would pretty much put the headphones on.
I actually got the opportunity to meet him, once!

JK: Where did you meet him?

Corbin Bleu: Kenny Ortega, director of High School Musical, has done Michael's tour numerous times. He has worked on music videos.
He actually came to the 'High School Musical' concert in Los Angeles.

JK: Michael Jackson???

Corbin Bleu: Michael Jackson came to the 'High School Musical' concert. With his kids. His kids are huge fans.
And... he actually came to the backstage. And you know... of course all these huge bodyguards come in and they check the surrounding and make sure there's no cameras.
And then Michael walks in! He has got these big shades on. And, I mean - he is so cool. He is a guy... that's first of all. He is a dude... Most people - if you see him - a lot of people think of him as you know.... more of a frail kind of person. Dude walks in... he is a big guy... he has got a strong handshake.

JK: Really???

Corbin Bleu: Yeah. He is very much of a... you know, he is a dude.
The crazy part was that afterwards, we had to do the show...knowing that he is sitting right there. And we could see him. And my bit in the show is almost an entire homage to him. I mean, between the outfit I pop up on the stage... a lot of the moves. I am sitting up here going: "Michael Jackson's watching me dance right now!" I mean, it was just one of the most surreal moments of my life. But I grew up being so inspired by him, and loving him. I love his work.

MICHAEL ISSUES STATEMENT ON J5 TOUR

Michael Jackson has issued a statement saying he will not participate in a Jackson 5 reunion in 2009.

"My brothers and sisters have my full love and support, and we’ve certainly shared many great experiences, but at this time I have no plans to record or tour with them.

I am now in the studio developing new and exciting projects that I look forward to sharing with my fans in concert soon."

The statement comes in response to his brother Jermaine Jackson's recent comments at a TV industry function in Sydney (Australia) this week, where the musician said the Jackson 5 has plans to reunite next year. Jermaine Jackson was in Australia to help launch a new "greatest hits" TV channel for Foxtel.

A ‘THRILLER’ AT GURNEES’S SIX FLAGS

Six Flags Great America in Gurnee had vampires, werewolves and zombies among its guests on Saturday (25th October 2008), as the 300 plus crowd helped towards breaking the world record for the largest simultaneous dance of Michael Jacksons ‘Thriller’
Six Flags took second place in the ‘Thrill the World’ worldwide event, which covered 65 cities in 10 countries and included, USA, Australia, England, Ireland, Canada, Scotland and New Zealand. In first place was a team from Austin, Texas (USA) with 880 people taking part in the event. Gurnee took second place with 334 participants and Seattle, Washington (USA) came third with 195 participants.

Six Flags public relations manager Brooke Gabbert, said the park was buzzing with anticipation of the event.

"When we opened up the park at 10 a.m. people were already lining up to dance.

The crowd just kept growing," said Gabbert. "It was neat to see people get excited."

More than 4,000 people took part in this year's Thrill the World event, which was at least 2,200 more than last year, making it a world record.

Thrill the World creator Ines Markelievic said:

"We wanted to connect the world by sharing the joy of dance, the celebration of community and the passion for living. I believe we did just that."

Singer and producer T-Pain has already collaborated with the biggest names in the music buiness, such as Ludacris, Ciara, Chris Brown, and Kanye West. Now he has reached the top of the mountain:

"I pretty much did it already. I did two pieces with Michael Jackson, so I'm pretty much done; my list is all checked off.

I just worked on his new album. He actually invited me to his house. So I went to his house and it was pretty much that day where we just hung out ..."

T-Pain admits that he never imagined he'd have a chance to collaborate with the King of Pop.

"I never thought Michael Jackson would ever work with me. He actually sent for me, so that was kind of weird and cool at the same time."

‘THRILL THE WORLD’ AT SALEM

Cindy Taplin and Mary Donaledson, 66 and friends since they were children, went along to Salem State College gym on Saturday afternoon (25th October 2008) to join 128 other people. Why? To help set the Guiness world record for the most people dancing the zombie dance from Michael Jackson’s music video ‘Thriller’ at the same time.

The event which had Zombies coming from as far away as Miami and Sacramento was part of the International ‘Thrill the World’ campaign. Young and old came dressed in all kinds of goryness with a few adding their own variations such as pirates, Minnie Mouse and hippies. Just before 2 p.m. the dancers assumed their positions, sprawled dead-like on the floor, slowly coming to life with the beat of the music, as fog emerged from a steam machine and they got to grips with their inner Michael Jackson. At the end of the dance, everyone cheered.

Talking about ‘Thriller’ Jamie Saltmarsh (46) said:

"I absolutely loved that thing from the minute I saw it.
It's like fulfilling a dream to be able to learn the moves and to do it. It was very, very cool."

The director of the college's performing arts center , Kathleen McDonald Murphy, said the event will absolutely be annual. They may try and use Salem Common next year.

MJ COMMENTS ON THRILLER DANCE EVENT IN NY

As we reported earlier, a special Thriller Dance Event took place on 30th October 2008 at Madame Tussauds New York (USA) to break the Guinness World Record for the most people doing the Thriller dance at the same time. This was also an early celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Michael Jackson video (which debuted on MTV in December 1983).

In a statement to PEOPLE magazine, Michael Jackson commented on the event:

"I always thought Halloween and 'Thriller' fit each other like a glove."

‘MAN IN THE MIRROR’ RE-ENTERS UK CHARTS

Diana Vickers’ (17) performance of 'Man In the Mirror' on the UK talent show X Factor (October 18, 2008) has seen the original song from the BAD album (1987) back into the charts. The original was released as a single in 1988 - three years before Diana was born.

The Westholme School pupil’s barefoot performance has led to a flurry of downloads on internet music sites and 'Man In The Mirror' has re-charted at 55 as a result.

Diana’s mother Ann, who works at Marks and Spencers, said:

“It’s fantastic news.

Diana is a Michael Jackson fan definitely, and I love all of his records.

I enjoyed her singing her own version of the song, I thought it was great.

She loves the Beatles as well as Michael Jackson.”

--------------------------------------------------
THRILL THE WORLD IN LA

Of course LA (USA) was also part of 'Thrill The World'. Dressed as zombies, thousands of amateur dancers took over neighborhood parks, community centers and shopping malls in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest worldwide simultaneous performance of the dance sequence from Michael Jackson's "Thriller" music video.

The final numbers are still being tallied, but according to event organizer Ines Markeljevic, 4,179 people in 72 cities across 10 nations participated, easily breaking last year's record of 1,722 participants.

In Los Angeles, 114 people showed up at the Hollywood & Highland complex in full zombie garb. Led by dancer Adam Sevani, they followed the dance moves in the legendary music video. Meanwhile in Austin 881 dancers, including the city's mayor Will Wynn, took part in the worldwide event.

Markeljevic isn't resting on her laurels.

"My goal is a quarter million next year. I think that's completely possible. I'm going to focus on contacting every single school in North America so we can reach that number."

Los Angeles co-organizer Mahdroo McCaleb says he's been contacted by Michael Jackson's people who have requested a personal DVD for the pop star. And there even were rumors that Jackson may have been hovering over the event on Saturday (25th October 2008):

"We had a helicopter fly overhead shooting video of us," McCaleb says. "No one's claimed the helicopter and the footage hasn't appeared anywhere. We thought it might be Michael Jackson. Who else can afford a helicopter?"

Whether or not Michael Jackson was there in body, his spirit infused the event.

"I don't know how it all came together," McCaleb says, "but when we were out there doing the dance it just felt electric. We were spot on. It was everything I'd hoped it would be."

EFRON LEFT SPEECHLESS BY JACKSON

Actor Zac Efron ('High School Musical') was overwhelmed to find out Michael Jackson is a fan of his work - and was left "speechless" when the entertainer called to congratulate him on his success.

Michael Jackson is a close friend of the films' director Kenny Ortega. Efron admits he was delighted when Ortega handed him his cellphone and told him that Michael Jackson was on the line for him:

"I've been wanting to talk to Michael Jackson my whole life, but as soon as Kenny handed me the phone, I was at a loss for words. I have never been so speechless.
He said he loves High School Musical. It was motivation for us, and encouragement."

Re: October 31 - Nov 02 Halloween weekend mentionings

Update coming up for November 1, 2008. I hope everyone had a good Halloween! As we all know by now Michael Jackson has been out and about all this week and with the statement about Michael squashing the rumor about him not being in the J5 reunion, with all this news that has been reported there isn't much to report as of right now. There are alot of mentionings about the "Thrill the World" contests and since it was Halloween last night there is a lot of mentionings about "Thriller".

Let's see what we have for today and I will be right back.

Michael Jackson's "Thriller" was among the many Halloween-themed songs roaring from a large speaker.
The West Main Elementary School PTO provided popcorn in exchange for donations for the school's new playground.

Karina’s performances have caused some of the greatest in the music industry to become spellbound: Quincy Jones, Barbara Streisand, Jay-Z, Diddy and the list goes on and on.
"I adore Quincy, he is my Godfather and it's just incredible for him to say I´m talented. He has worked with everyone you can think of, including Michael Jackson when he was young. I have no words to describe it," Karina said in a recent interview.

Former governor Tom Ridge, who recently stated the obvious, that "the dynamics would be different in Pennsylvania" if he'd been tapped as McCain's running mate instead of Palin, had the task of introducing the Alaska governor to about 4,000 of her rabid fans, many of them sporting "Joe" stickers meant to bolster John McCain's recent assertions that we -- or they -- "are all Joe the Plumber." Sarah and Todd Palin, along with youngest daughter Piper (dressed for Halloween as a snow princess) took the stage to Michael Jackson's "Thriller."

The Gawler boy, who was "politely asked to leave Trinity College" at 15 and describes himself as "a bit of a rebel" in his earlier years, plays guitar, piano, harmonica, drums and bass. He's looking forward to tonight's Michael Jackson show when he'll sing Black Or White.

The show, however, offers pleasures of a different sort. Warhol fans will love the chance to read Mick Jagger's commissioning letter to the artist for an album cover (that never got made), or to rifle through the artist's bootleg Maria Callas reel-to-reels, the ticket stubs from his many visits to Carnegie Hall, and his early cherubic illustrations for the cover of Opera News. The show includes excerpts from Warhol's TV shows, too, and issues of his celebrity magazine Interview (featuring pop musicians such as Michael Jackson, Sting and Debbie Harry).

Other interests: Beyond just academically, I love reading almost anything. Some other things I find time to do every day include playing the piano and running or riding my bike. I also attend Schweitzer Methodist Church.
Most played on my iPod: As different as they are, it is a three-way tie between John Mayer, Ben Folds and Michael Jackson.

Another crowd favorite was a Michael Jackson impersonator followed by dancers monster-mashing the pavement to the sounds of Jackson's "Thriller." It's the 25th anniversary of the killer album's release.
At 10th St. a float stopped and love bloomed into marriage between Acey Slade, singer-guitarist with the horror punk band the Murder Dolls, and Anne Lindfjeld, who works for MTV Denmark.

I couldn’t have been happier as I drove over the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge last night. The radio was blaring Michael Jackson’s 1980s classic Thriller in anticipation of Halloween, and I was singing along with Michael. (Singing when no one else is in the car is a guilty pleasure of mine.)

Michael Jackson HIStory for November 1, 2008:

can't believe Reuter, the trusted newsites where many media outlets copy their articles from, said MJ is the self-proclaimed king of pop. whoever wrote that article can go to HELLL.

question: since MJ is the co owner of Sony/ATV, why isn't he making a statement regarding MTV purchase of the beatles songs' right like Mr.Martin Bandier did?

Re: October 31 - Nov 02 Halloween weekend mentionings

Thanx, Marie.

Btw, I just saw the animation on Yahoo, I love it - zombies doing Thriller dance! Check it out.
I'm so glad they picked that for the Halloween theme. Cool!

Because Marty works for Michael, it's like this the Boss which is Michael can send out others to speak on behalf of the company which in this case Marty is his CEO.
