Five Years And Counting
November 10, 2008
...Five years ago, the Michael Jackson trial was big news. Ed felt that the details of the trial, and the crazy antics of the strange pop singer were totally unimportant to the members of our community. But the Local media - TV, News-Press, Independent, etc. - were hypnotized by the stardom and were lured into the fray by the amount of attention the trial was getting in the National media. Michael Jackson was about as far from the reality of our every day lives as the fact that 2003 was the year of the Sheep...

The folks over a Sony/ATV have been VERY busy lately. The choice of Martin Bandier is really paying off for MJ. Everytime you turn around, they're making some type of new move. Bravo!

I also notice that the success of the Thriller-25 project has been making the rounds in the news. Bravo! Mike doesn't have to say a word, all he has to do is sit back and SMILE LOL!

Thanks for the news, Shannon.

Ed felt that the details of the trial, and the crazy antics of the strange pop singer were totally unimportant to the members of our community.

Hmmm, MJ strange.... I do not know about that but I am not shocked that this fool felt the the details of the trial was unimportant for the public to know. That just tells you about the media and how the roll.

He gets a lot a flack but:
Despite being cited by the Culture and Media Institute for having "sexually degrad- ing" lyrics, Usher is anything but a one-trick pony. More than 10 years and 35 million records into his career he is a bona fide superstar.

He closed out the set with "Here I Stand," and returned to encore with "Caught Up," eventually ending the show with an audio clip of Barack Obama's election night speech.

Which was awesome. :)

Thanks Shannon. Happy birthday everyone!

I do not understand why Usher gets flack from some sensitive MJ fans. I really do not understand that. I wish people would just stop already. Thanks for posting that, Silouette. At least there are fans of MJ that are mature enough to give respect to other artists.

No...thank you Bee for at least recognizing that.
I Ihave my silly side but I do know how to separate the two.
Theres nothing wrong with expressing ones opinion but some
tend to go overboard. But hey, who am I to judge?

On the channel TV One, they are doing a countdown to the 100 most influence moments by African American that shape the culture. I am sure Michael is going to be on this list this week with his breakthrough on Motown and his breakthrough on MTV. Last night, it was 100-80. Tonight is 79-50. It comes on at 10:00 pm TV ONE.

Thanks for that info Terrell. I'll have to crash my sisters crib to see that one! Lol.
I remember some years back, Michael did make this particular list, only it was in either VIBE or
EBONY magazine.

Thanks terrel for that information.

I have some news. I get the magazine Sister 2 Sister magazine through mail. I was reading the December issue and I had no idea that the Jacksons were going to be in the magazine. When I saw the picture of the family, I was like, "I have to post this on the board". (BTW, the picture is very nice.) Now, this news is about the Jackson being honored at the BMI Urban Awards back in September.

Sister 2 Sister
December 2008
Volume 20, Number 12
"Meow"
Pgs. 17-18
Done by Jamie Foster Brown with the assistance of Ericka Boston and Sabrina M. Parker.

The Jacksons were honored at the BMI Urban Awards, but where were Michael and Jermaine?

The BMI Urban Awards were, as usual, a spectacular event. The performance right orgnaization recognized such hot music makers as T-Pain, Kanye West, Beyonce, Soulja Boy, Chris Brown and Ne-Yo, to name a few. But everyone was geared up to see The Jacksons this year. Music industry insiders gathered at the Wilshire Theatre in beautiful Beverly Hills, where BMI Vice President Del Bryant and Altanta-based BMI Vice President Catherine Brewton hosted the event.

This year, BMI honored Michael, Marlon, Tito, Jermaine, Jackie, and Randy although Jermaine and Michael weren't there during BMI's tribute. Sister Janet arrived from a backstage entrance right after mom Katherine and father Joseph were escorted into the building and led to their front-row seats. Sisters Rebbie and LaToya were also in the house. Later, Janet summoned her mom and dad, as well as her sisters, onstage for the moving BMI tribute. Janet beamed with pride as she thanked her brothers for their impact on the music industry. Soon, like one of Michael's onstage theatrics, the entire family disappearewd behind the curtains of the stage never to be seen again.

The Jackson 5 recorded on the Motown lable from the late 19860s to 1975. Who first introduced the group to Motown founder Berry Gordy? Some say it was Gladys Knight. Others say that lesser known former Motown recording artist Bobby Taylor discovered the Jackson 5 after the group won several talent contests in and around Gary, Indiana. But let's just say that after Berry heard about the group with this amazing lead singer by the name of Michael, he signed them. Soon, the brothers, along with their father/manager Joseph, were living in Los Angeles. The left mother Katherine to care for the rest of the family in Gary, but later the entire family was reunited in L.A. Early on, little Michael caught the eye of Motown's biggest star, Diana Ross. He even lived with Diana when he first got to L.A.

The Jackson 5 was the first act to have four major labels singels, including "I Want You Back", "ABC", "The Love You Save" and "I'll Be There". To say that they were a hit would be an understatement! Many credit the Jackson 5 as being among the first Black teen idols to appeal to both Black and White audiences.

By 1976, the group was grwoing up; music was changing and they wanted a change too. They left Motown Records for CBS/Epic. Before they did, though, they recorded some very impressive work in Philadelphia with Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. During the long recording sessions, the brothers dined on all kinds of foods, but among their favorites, I'm told, were Philly cheese steaks. And Michael loved homemade sweet potato pie.

Back in the day, Jermaine had married Berry Gordy's daughter, Hazel. He remained at his father-in-law's label, against his father and no, doubt, his siblings' wishes. (Funny thing, though: Nobody seemed to know why Jermaine was absent from the BMI tribute. According to the rumor mill, Jermaine was feuding with family. Others said he had found a new love and was living in wealth, despite some baby momma drama and other financial woes. But who knows.)

Baby brother Randy was introduced as a member of the Jackson 5 when the group arrived at CBS Records. They went on to record such hits as "Shake Your Body Down to the Ground", "Heartbreak Hotel" and "Can You Feel It".

While accepting the honor, Marlon, thanked Joseph for having the wisdom to create the group. Randy recalled that his mother made him was dishes when he came home from his first performance with the group. And Janet got emotional as she spoke about their contributions to music. No one knew why Michael missed the event, though he never confirmed that he would attend. We even called Michael's representative to find out why he missed the event but she did not give a reason. But Marlon gave the Associated Press his best guess when he askd where Michael was: "I think he's in Egypt riding a camel or something".
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dang, that was a bit long. Now, I want to tell you guys something: When you come to Philadelphia, try a cheesesteak. It is VERY good. Now, if you are a vegetarian or vegan, ignore what I just said. LOL. As for the reason why Jermaine did not attend, as I was typing the information, I was reading the information for the first time. I was shocked that Jamie even said that. Now, thinking about it..... y'all know what I am trying to say. LOL. I am not gonna say anymore than that. Regarding Mike, hey, Jamie tried to contact the guy and his people and nothing. So..... well, at least we know what really happened.

No...thank you Bee for at least recognizing that.

You are very welcome.

Almost six years ago now I caught the last 5 minutes of a documentary about a superstar who, up until that moment, I really hadn't given much attention or thought to. I am not one to follow the lives of celebrities but this program instantly caught my attention. I felt drawn to know what the real story was regarding this ultra-famous man. Of course I had heard of him, but I never knew a thing about him other than what was portrayed by the media and could tell it was distorted and falsified. I felt a need to know the truth so I headed to my favorite new tool of research - the net. I listened to the songs and watch the videos. I started to see the pattern of a message he was sending out of peace and hope and acceptance, of love for all regardless of race or age, of non-violence and of becoming a better person and of helping others. This was so different from the message the media pushed about him. The more I read and saw, the more I grew to admire this man. I read his poetry and learned even more about his compassion and wisdom. I read about his humanitarian efforts and much of the work he has done to try to make this world a better place, and I felt my own compassion towards him growing. This is a man who has been seriously misunderstood and misrepresented for entirely too long. I don't know every song he's sung, I can't do any of his dance moves, I do not dress like him nor do I desire to, I really don't know everything about his life, but I know more than I had. So I probably am not a superfan, but I think I can say I am a great admirer of Mr. Michael Jackson. You'd probably already guessed the name. If I could spend one hour with him I would love to get to know each other as new friends might. I would ask more about what his dreams were regarding his charity "Heal The Children" foundation, and talk a bit about his Oxford speech. I am not sure it could all be done in one hour but these are the things I am interested in.

This is what I wrote. What I tried writing at first but exceeded the 2000 character limit was

Is Oprah quietly extending an olive branch to Michael, or did she just come up with a very creative way to get us to send him to her?

This is a tricky one. It feels funny. I mean, everyone knows that we MJ fans really get out there and vote for our man Mike, but should we do it this time after all that has happened?

I mean, it seems like she and MJ need a moment to talk about how he was being condemned without his side being heard, but it feels like they need to talk off the air--off camera.

Wow. This is tricky. *sigh*

Michael is a beautiful person and it just seems like she forgot all about that while Sneddon was charging at him like a bull.

I just figured the more chance to let people know that the media has been presenting a wrong picture, the better. I couldn't ever see going on Oprah, but I wanted to say my piece so someone could read it and see that there's most likely more to him than they had thought, and maybe (if they thought bad about him) that they are wrong about him. Plus if they get bombarded with people writing about Michael, maybe they will take notice as well, if presented in a positive light by many.

No one really has to go on the show.

What you wrote is very nice and right on the money. Many do need to read the nice things about Michael Jackson. There are so many nice things that can be said about him because he's been a nice and caring person for as long as many can remember.

It's interesting that she's having this type of show. I can't recall her ever doing anything like this and it feels like she's calling MJ fans without saying it. There are many fans that dress like MJ and MJ fans know a lot about him too.

If anything, I hope she knows we are very proud of him.

Interesting insight there allforMJ. She doesn't mention his name, and really, what Madonna fans dress like her? What exactly does she dress like? The only fans this strongly seems to apply to is Michael Jackson fans. You are right.

It's hard to turn a deaf hear on Michael Jackson's songs. His voice and lyrics linger in your mind. Even toddlers sing his songs.

Not too long ago, I saw this program about his teenage boy that was deaf. MJ is his favorite entertainer and he was outside doing MJ's dances. :D

It would be like imploring this Oprah to invite michael .

I dont see why i have to convinced her , i am a fan of mike i dont care about her feelings towards him and so does michael i am sure, so i dont see the usefullness of this process .

Screw Ograh. She not so discretely left Michael's name off of her little blurb there. She isn't reaching out to him, it's just another hair brained idea for her lame ass show.

This is what I wrote (not every word is a popular point of view here, but see through it and recognize my intentions. I wrote this with public view of MJ in mind):

Michael Jackson is a superstar since he is 11. His career cannot be compared to any of his peers. Generations of artists are inspired by his singing and dancing. From the soul of Off The Wall, the legend that is Thriller and his more personal songs since Dangerous, make him an Icon.

Then there's the other side: surgeries, 'weird' behavior, the mystery, the scandals.
In 1993, during the Grammy Legend Awards, he told the audience (after being interviewed by Oprah, the Half bowl show and him being more at ease to step out of his own world): It's great to be seen as a person, not a personality.

After that... hell broke loose. Everyone knows what happened, both in 1993 and in 2003-2005. But... anyone who followed those cases from other than tabloid sources and an open mind, knew and recognized the frivolousness of those cases. Mary S. Fisher wrote a revealing article about it in 1994, and in 2005, Michael Jackson was cleared of all charges.

But still, his career is hurt, but most importantly: his reputation. Michael Jackson in large part is responsible for this himself, because of his looks, his behavior and because of the people he chose to hang out/do business with. But no one deserves the slaughtering that he has had to endure.

I look forward to the day that Michael Jacksons children, whether they are naturally his or not, are old enough to speak, and tell the world who he really is. I am confident it will be a positive judgment.

I know Oprah herself has many questions and even more reservations towards Michael Jackson. But maybe Oprah can open her mind. And remind people about the fact that Michael Jackson is a human being, after all.

I think in response of the f-Oprah posts, that it could be a good opportunity to come out of 'hiding' and re-introduce him to the public. Not despite of, but because Oprah has raised serious doubts about him. That would work much better than an interview with someone who already is in 'his camp'.

I agree. If She really wanted Michael to come on her show, she would've asked him. I don't think she's interested in having him on her show.

I submitted something on there anyway. I live in Chicago, and would be wiling to attend the show if he is selected.
