New Jack Swing Appreciation Thread

I remember that era all too very well. Especially when Boyz II Men first came out. I remember how huge they were when I was in 5th grade. I loved Boyz 2 Men at the time because they came from Philadelphia. Which is an hour away from where I live. I also had loved some of those other singers you guys had mention. It is this kind of music is why I still love the Dangerous album like I do.

Wow, awesome, a fellow East Coast fan! I'm like 90 minutes from Philly! . . . Motown Philly=great song!

Fun thread, you guys know your stuff and bring back some memories! . . . . I've often wondered why no one makes songs like that anymore.

As for Dangerous, I'd agree w/ the comments that yes, thematically, it is a NJS album because, to me anyway, that's the prevalent sound. It does have non-NJS songs obviously, but that's why I like the album so much, it's got a little bit of everything and mixes genres as only MJ can do, but to me after listenign to it the prevalent sound is NJS, plus since TR produced it.

MJ in with some hardcore swingbeat..

A little bit of late-80's, Quincy Jones-produced NJS... A very odd fusion of talents and you know what? They pull it off without issue.

That really had me going, very nice uplifting stuff!

Love that "white note percussion" (same type of percussion you can hear in "Bad") that goes around in the background, gives the song a drive :)

I like this cd, and I looove that song! I remember being little and my aunt would be working out to this song

Most def. That album was essentially a NJS album.

Right on my man! :)

You know what I love about that tune, what I don't think the "general listener" pay attention to... it's that crowd noise in the background. It ain't like a big crowd from an arena or whatever, it's like a "block party crowd".
If that ain't a signature NJS sound I don't know what it is :D

Of you and that off beat snare also, lol.

It's hard not to love the whole NJS sound - it feels good without being "too happy".
I mean, for me happy music often tend to not sound so "genuine"... but NJS does.

This album came out a good couple of years after New Jack Swing had died down (1995), but it incorporates a lot of the sound and is probably my favorite track of hers. This is Rosie Gaines, by the way, the same woman who dueted with Prince a few time, most notably on "Diamonds & Pearls" and the live version of "Nothing Compares 2 U".

^ Aaah man, how can I've not heard that record before?!
Do you hear that groove?! *adds to beat patterns to steal.txt* :D

I might spin that one for a week straight, thank you!

Remixes by The Characters (one of the g.o.a.t. njs production duo) which I consider among the last great NJS tracks.

I always wondered what the guitars and drums where for........

This sounds to me like it could have been some sort of continuation of Bad with the heavy funk, slamming programmed drums, and big synths. Anyway, his vocals are quite reminiscent of Mike's and Nile Rodgers is on his signature funky guitar scratching here.

More Than Physical

I LOVE New Jack Swing! I'm in college and I've been listening to a lot of early 90's R&B/pop (along with 80's music).

Would any of you consider Who Is It to be a New Jack Swing song? Some say it is and some say it isn't
