Pop phenom Lady GaGa leads the pack of nominees at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. The 24 year old superstar scored an unprecedented 13 nominations - making history as the first artist to achieve that many in a single year.

Full story after the jump…

The ‘Bad Romance’ singer said of her whopping number of noms:

“I’m so honored for all the little monsters and self-professed freaks of the universe, to have more VMA nominations in a single year than any artist in MTV history. Ironically, I’m even more proud it’s an unlucky number; 13. A long time ago the world told me and my little monsters we would never be heard, together we changed the rules. God put me on Earth for 3 reasons: To make loud music, gay videos, and cause a damn raucous. Thank You MTV!”

Other artists nominated in multiple categories include Eminem (8), B.O.B (5), and Ke$ha (3). Check out the full list of nominees for the event, which airs on September 12th, live from Los Angeles’ Nokia Theater, below…

Lady Gaga Sets VMA Record With 13 Nominations

Lady Gaga didn't keep much of a poker face Tuesday, as the singer was elated after capturing 13 MTV Video Music Award nominations, a single-year record in the show's 25-year history.

"I'm so honored for all the little monsters and self-professed freaks of the universe, to have more VMA nominations in a single year than any artist in MTV history," the singer said in a statement, according to People.

"Ironically, I'm even more proud it's an unlucky number: 13,” she said. “A long time ago the world told me and my little monsters we would never be heard, together we changed the rules. God put me on Earth for three reasons: To make loud music, gay videos and cause a damn raucous. Thank you, MTV!"

Gaga's hit singles Bad Romance and Telephone are both up for video of the year, among other honors. Bad Romance recently held the distinction of being the most-viewed YouTube video ever, until Justin Bieber’s Baby passed it last month with more than 245 million views.

The 2010 Video Music Awards will air live on MTV September 12 at 9/8c.

If Gaga wins alot of awards, I think I'll puke. I'm sorry I just don't see what the big deal is. She's overrated IMO

Well what do you know... the same bullish as always... they need to shut down the award shows all together being that it isnt a music television anymore and being that people could give a rats ass about MTV.

I miss the 90's. MTV makes me sick nowadays.
13 nominations to Lady Nada? lol  :puke:

IMO winning music awards isn't even that big of a deal anymore. Not even Grammys. The music industry is nothing like it used to be, because of the so-called 'talented' artists of today. I cringed at most of the artists on that list. Lately, music awards are being given away based on popularity and not actual talent.

^^ your so right !! Music isn't about music any more, its about popularity and money !!! shame. The world is lacking musical talent right now...

Today's mainstream music has no Soul IMO.

I swear this is the dumbest thing I have read in a while.
For example, look at the nomination for best Choreography:

Video Phone - Beyonce feat. Lady Gaga
Telephone -Lady Gaga feat Beyonce
Bad Romance - Lady Gaga
.....

I mean seriously if she gets nominated 3 times in the same category no wonder she gets 13 nominations. Wtf is wrong with these people?
In several other ones she got nominated twice in the same category as well.
It seems to me anyone can become "record - breaking" that way.

My goodness I never thought Mtv would stoop this low. All for ratings of her "Little Monsters". I'm definitly not gonna watch this year. I think I''ll seriously puke seeing them kiss her behind so much.

Lady Gaga is so overrated as well as most, if not all, of the artists on that list..
It seems every year they pick a new artist to overflow nominations with.

I swear this is the dumbest thing I have read in a while.

Video Phone - Beyonce feat. Lady Gaga

Seriously. It's not even about the music or the video, it's about popularity. It's one big popularity contest.

Ridiculous. I won't be watching, so it's no skin off my nose. This garbage means nothing to me. I wish we could go back to a time where the artists actually earned these awards.

Congratulations, Lady Gaga, for out-nominating -checks list- Ke$ha, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift... whom even my cat could out-nominate, I am sure. She must be SO proud of herself for this monumental achievement...

At this time, I would like to bring your attention to the fact that pretty much everyone on the "nominations" list is mediocre to the core, with the exception of Eminem, Jay-Z and Alicia Keys. They can't really nominate them for "best dance video" or "best female video", etc.

The MTV awards are designed to be in favour of a pop artist to begin with, since the majority of the categories have to do with pop themes such as "choreography" and "dance." While it is true that these things can be found in other genres, they are an undoubted staple of pop music.

In any case, Gaga has it easy and I won't be surprised if she does win most of the awards. Anyone slightly better than either Ke$ha or Katy Perry (not difficult to find) would beat them. Put Gaga up against a set of real artists and watch them all eat the poor manufactured girl for breakfast.

PS: I'm sick of her riding on the coat-tails of the gay struggle and claiming to be a voice for social outcasts. Yeah, because social outcasts really want to get drunk and "just dance." That sounds more to me like what the regular schmoe desires... Gaga fail. Real outcasts don't listen to artificial pop tarts. If they listen to pop music at all, they listen to the REAL artists in the pop genre, like Michael Jackson. :)

Without reading the comments I'm going to guess that this thread is all about how much today's music sucks and how much better music was in a past decade. I wonder if there was ever an era in music where people didn't say that. In the 90s it was all about how much bubblegum pop music sucks and "waaah I wish it was still the 80s."

Yeah, the VMAs are all about dumbed down mainstream pop music. I think at least half of the songs listed here are worth listening to in the car or at a party, though. Who watches MTV to hear deep insightful music? I mean, you'll get that occasionally, but...

Oh, and MTV doesn't play videos anymore because everyone watches videos on YouTube and their ratings would die if they were a music video channel like they used to be. I do wish they had more music oriented programs, though.

^ Ummm I disagree 100%. The actual of quality music (more so mainstream music) has gone down so much. Compare the quality of music from 60's-90's to today's and you will have your answer.

You may also note that the public's increasingly thirst of music of the past is based solely on a lot of the garbage we have today. I always find it funny when people try to defend the s**t music of today  ,mainstream music quality is low. Music sales are at an all time low today, there's a basic reason for that. People don't buy music that sucks.

Here is a post that I made that I think replies to what you have to say very well

"The quality of mainstream artists and music is extremely low at the moment.

The whole music industry is based on over hyping newer "artists" now. "Artists" today don't accomplish anything but they hail you as the greatest thing ever, when in fact they are just mediocre.

The majority of newer artists today are constantly having to promote themselves, appearing on every talk show, constantly trying to put themselves out their to make themselves seem like "they are so popular". It's all an illusion, the music industry creates "artists" who are nothing, to make them seem "talented, and amazing". Sadly a lot people cannot see through this whole illusion and buy in that these newer artists are the greatest thing since sliced bread.

My theory is that people will be into current artists because it makes them feel like "they are apart of something" more than they actually like them or their music.

"Artists" of today are canonless and have no mystique. I dare you to compare the mainstream artists of 1969-1992 and see the HUGE difference in talent and actual quality of music.

The majority of artists today don't deserve the popularity they are getting. People are sheep, people like to be apart of things rather than quality of music."

Oh, and not liking today's music is a very common thing, with all generations I might add (I'm 21 myself)

ok i guess the question is, do you think any of the artists today's music will be playing 20 years from and still sounds great quality wise (like a classic)

Who said I didn't agree that past music was better? But you disagree with...

Without reading the comments I'm going to guess that this thread is all about how much today's music sucks and how much better music was in a past decade.

This?

?

This? The bolded part is subjective so you can't really disagree with it :).

Oh, and MTV doesn't play videos anymore because everyone watches videos on YouTube and their ratings would die if they were a music video channel like they used to be.

This? You can't possibly disagree with that. It's pretty obvious that that's why they don't play videos like they used to :).

I do wish they had more music oriented programs, though.

Or this?

Oh, and not liking today's music is a very common thing, with all generations I might add (I'm 21 myself)

Didn't I specifically say that?

Music sales are at an all time low today, there's a basic reason for that. People don't buy music that sucks.

Yeah, it has nothing whatsoever to do with the popularity of illegal downloading being at an all-time high. Eminem's new album which sold through the roof by today's standards would have been below par for him in the early 2000s, and I don't think it's simply because his music "sucks" now.

Oh, and to answer the poster above, I don't particularly look for classics when I'm at a club or something like that. There needs to be more quality music but there's nothing wrong with a song that's just stupid fun either... kind of like Britney Spears and NSYNC :).

^^ I disagree with the fact you say that you think people were constantly pining for the music of the past. If they were in the past it was a tiny amount of people thinking that way. But today.., it really has become a vastly spread idea of thought. You give the impression with your opening statement that you have a bitterness towards people who dislike today's music ,if I read it wrong, then its fine if you correct me on that

Rebelling against what's currently popular has always been popular. The amount of people who thought that Britney and boybands were garbage was NOT a small amount of people, and neither of those acts were musical geniuses or poets by any stretch of the imagination. In fact I'll go ahead and say that Lady GaGa is more talented than Britney, even though I would rather listen to Britney's music if given the choice (probably in large part because I grew up in the era where she was at her peak in popularity).

You give the impression with your opening statement that you have a bitterness towards people who dislike today's music.

Not really. I'm annoyed when people go on about nothing other than how much today's music sucks every single time a topic like this one comes up, especially since the VMAs have never really been about honoring the greats in the field of music. Who really watches the VMAs to see who wins? The show is really all about the antics that take place in it. The aforementioned people just sound like they want an excuse to sound knowledgeable and intelligent about music. Yes, you were alive in a past decade and are familiar with the music of its time. Good for you.

I agree with that to a certain extent.. I mean I just find that whats happening today is that the whole "I don't like today's music" is muuuuuuchhh more prevalent than it's ever been. I'm not sure if it's the majority of people that feel that way, but it certainty is heading to that direction if anything. This is all based on the research I've done online and friends/family I've been talking to.

Also yeah, were the same age so I also was able to see a lot of the hype surrounding Spice Girls/Boy Bands/Britney. Not a fan of this stuff though :p but if I had to choose I'd definitely chose them over today's stuff

Who really watches the VMAs to see who wins? The show is really all about the antics that take place in it.

I think it's happening simply because there's such a deep root of frustration at the fact that our "artists" of today are...well..kind of mediocre..It's almost like this jealousy of past generations and wanting to have those days of those real legendary artists. Lots of us have done it, the whole feeling of "Dammit I wish the music and musical culture were like it was in the past"...Music to me and many others has become soo very soulless and bland. Probably a huge reason is the fact that there is wayyyy to many artists out there, and it's not as condensed as it used to be. (With all the internet/technology then there is just too many artists out there, it's hard to filter the good from bad sometimes)

I'm really just upset/angry at the fact that my favorite artists are either too old, or have passed away. Since I love music (and we all do here) so much it really is just depressing to even to turn on the radio and always be dissapointed =\.

Well the majority of today's music does suck.................

.............Record Sales prove that................

.............Michaels massive after-death sales also prove that..........

.............I think that people are just boycotting buying music until quality improves!!!!!!!

.............People no longer want antics........only media, idiots who read tabloids and bigger idiots who worship celebrity status want this plastic culture!!!!!!!

I know what you mean. I'm like that a lot of times too.

Oh.

dude, don't tell me that today's music isn't the worst it's ever been... (in the short 60 year history of modern music genres).

Have you heard any POP album like Faith or Bad in the last few years? No, there is no quality, strictly-pop, mainstream music anymore.

People here always are complaining about "mainstream" music being bad. Find something else. You can't be lazy and want some radio conglomerate to bottlefeed music for you listen to and then complain about what they're feeding you. It's no different that somebody suing a fast food joint claiming the food is making them fat. No one is forcing you to listen to the radio or watch MTV. You all must like what you're complaining about, because you constantly come in these threads to gripe, but don't go into other threads with other types of music.

LOL, Saying that mainstream music is bad doesn't mean that you want someone to "bottlefeed" you music. Quit defending shitty music by saying "Oh well you can just ignore it". I'm a music fan, and I have a right to say that this music sucks (because it actually does.)

Oh, and the people that complain about how shitty the music is today are not the lazy people. Those people actually go out and find the good music from the past rather than people who just base what they listen to on what they see on TV or hear on the radio.

Read my previous posts please, I'm a huge music lover (like we all here), and as a music lover I naturally see what is popular and what's not. I wish that what is popular was actually worth it, rather than the constant barrage of mediocrity that we have been getting.

It's a frustration of having the mainstream music not being of quality of the past.

^^^^Thank You, Tsukiji!!!!!!

Mainstream music (like film, fashion, current affairs and current events) is a reflection of the times we live in.......

Everything has become too commercialised and thus it is too plastic and fake...........

........its all about Airbrushing, Computer-Generated-Imagery (CGI), and Auto-Tune!!!!!!........ALL FAKE!!!!

..........the music industry's failure to bring out proper music just proves this!!!!!
