MTV finally admitting the truth: MJ received the Artist of the Millenium Award in 2002

I HATE MTV.

How could they embarrass Michael like that? And look at that horrible, cheap, tacky "award" they gave him? What in the world?
To the greatest entertainer that ever lived?
Shame on them.
And shame on their "this channel had such a connection with Michael" comments after he died. UGH.
They need to issue an apology. BOYCOTT.

7 years too late in finally admitting the truth
I mean as if they wanted to show a person up in such a bad way!
They should be ashamed they have completely lost respected from me as far as music channel, Just remind me MTV does still stand for Music Television... In that case why have aload of nonsense reality shows on about daft spoilt teenagers and daft pimp my ride ...?

If they would air all their MJ footage (including the various rare concerts) from their archives we "might consider" forgiving them ;)

Mtv can just go and f themselves. I will sure never have any sort of respect towards that shit. I can't believe something like this actually could happen in the first place. And that they really have the nerves to try to cover their asses like this now... Screw them. They might as well close down the whole damn channel. That would just make my day. There's no real music on there anymore anyway. BS. Pure BS.

I REMEMBER that, as if it was yesterday. Michael had every reason to think he was getting the Artist of the Millennium Award. It was announced on the MTV website the day before. Britney SAID "Artist of the Millennium." And I also remember Michael accidentally bashed his shoulder, hard, on that wall as he walked out. So he had to be in all kinds of pain, both physical and emotional, with that whole fiasco.

I don't know what to think now. Did they or did they not name him "Artist of the Millennium?" Nobody else deserved that title. That was during the Sony mess, right? Did Sony STOP MTV from giving him the award, somehow? I just don't know. . . .

I felt so badly for Michael. It was awful. Just awful. What a horrible memory, he had about that. . . . . he deserved so much better.

MTV lost all credibility years ago when they turned the entire channel into a reality TV feeding frenzy. Ugh.

Michael was ALWAYS too good for them.

MTV Comes Clean about Artist of the Millennium Award?

Spread This News!
Years after denying it and making hateful jokes about it, someone at MTV is apparently trying to come clean by admitting -- in a nondirect, cowardly way -- that the late Michael Jackson did receive the "Artist of the Millennium" award in 2002.

The caption (see screenshot) underneath a picture of Michael Jackson that night reads: "Britney Spears presents Michael Jackson with the Artist of the Millennium Award at the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards" (View big, full screenshot here).
If you remember, there was a big controversy as to how MTV promised to honor Jackson by presenting him with a new, special award. Jackson showed up, helping to boost their ratings, while MTV later made a mockery of the entire event.

The same night there was a controversy as to whether or not MTV actually gave Jackson an award, with some insiders saying higher-ups had MTV pull the award to teach Jackson a lesson. This was around or after the big falling out Jackson had with Sony Music.

MTV pretended like Jackson went up on stage and gave himself an award, or had a "misunderstanding" of how he was being honored that night; his birthday by the way.

But apparently nobody warned to the guys running MTV's website that the award had been yanked or that Jackson was being made a fool out of because they posted the information about the Artist of the Millennium Award on MTV's site that night. See screenshot from 2002 below:

The next year Jack Black participated in a disgusting -- and rather unfunny actually -- parody of the event where he mocked Jackson.

Now after Jackson's death, along with the subsequent outing of MTV as a racist network in the 80s for refusing to play black videos before Jackson broke through, apparently they are a little less tight lipped with the truth.

Music Television (MTV) rarely plays videos at all anymore and at some point lost it's edge and dedication to music a very long time ago.

MTV's sudden realization of the power of Michael Jackson came too late... 7 years too late.

Fucking assholes, MTV. They should have set the record straight the DAY AFTER the mess. They f*cked up. Not Michael. They humiliated him, Jack Black humliated him. Im tired of people first picking Michael apart and bullying him and then taking it back like they never did anything. I lost respect for MTV for at least 7 years ago.

By the way MTV does not even play music anymore. All they do is broadcast reality-tv soapopera shows. What does the M stand for? Not music anyway...

Really an award or not, MTV (and whomever the puppet masters at the channel were at the time) humiliated Michael Jackson with that shit. I remember that day as if it was yesterday because as a viewer watching it, you could see the audience was confused, Michael seemed confused. Britney was the only one smiling and even she was on a different wavelength from everyone else.

I swear, if they start calling that cheesy ass Dollar Store music note they presented to him an "award", I'll have to hurt somebody. And as a birthday gift? Give me a break. Michael Jackson would come all the way to MTV because they want to wish him a Happy Birthday??

As that article someone posted indicated, the aftermath of that whole event made Michael look like he was crazy. Artist of the Millennium? Where the heck would he get an idea like that? Wasn't this smack in the middle of the "phony Sony" period?

MTV has long since lost love from me for a variety of reasons, one of which has to do with how they treated Michael Jackson after he essentially had a hand in catapulting MTV into the stratosphere in the 1980s. Them "quietly" dropping his name from the Video Vanguard Award was merely a twist of the knife. When MJ was riding high, MTV (and everyone else) was right there with him. After shit hit the fan, they all scattered like roaches when the lights are cut on.

Well said!!!!!!!!!!!!!

mtv died many years ago. What's on there now anyways? A lot of crap.
They will never be forgiven for what they did. Lame network...

Wow, Michael's music videos caused millions of people to start watching their channel (back when they actually played music not reality tv BS) and they had the nerve to leave this until after his death to say it was all true?? And in such a cowardly way?? :mat::mat:

Was Jack Black on the same night as Michael accepted the award? I dont remember...

But if he indeed were, then they were all out on a planned mission to humiliate him.

I believe he was. He made a joke later that night about him receiving an award for something really stupid.

too effing late, mtv, the man can't hear you. mtv: stop pretending you are relevant.

if you watch the full clip, you will see no doubt being jerks to him.

I cannot even say that Michael Jackson made what MTV is today. Because what MTV is today is total crap and Michael has always been better than them. I hope MTV goes to the grave soon, that channel has been dead for years.

MTV should've just STFU.
Because now it's almost like they trying to make him like a victim and have people questioning it even more thinking like "oh MTV said he really did get it because to pay respect, while he never really got it in the first place".

(Credit goes to whoever made this picture)

This I dont understand... Jack Black was wearing the same outfit as MJ did the same night... That guy from the rockband who introduced Jack Black was saying things that was related to the whole joke.. But was it a set up? Because I dont get where they staged that scene so fast, Jack Black getting a exact same costume as MJ and dressing up like him and humiliating him... This must have been planned. Absolutely disgusting, on the mans BIRTHDAY.

they made fun of him at the next year's awards.

Aint that a blip?!! They can just go on with that mess!
I remember that night very well too.
Apparently MJ was told this info by somebody at that MTV. Why else would he accept a non exsisting award?
Did Britney confuse the situation when she introduced MJ? That would make it seem like that was the first time MJ had heard about it as he waiting to come out on stage. I know I was confused as hell when he started with his "acceptance speach".
Dam! What a crock of doo doo!

They surely should have cleared the air that night....at the very least, the next day.
(I havent watched that channel for more than 5 minutes since 2002)

And Vic, what do they mean, "teach Jackson a lesson"?
A lesson in what?

Oh btw, Jimmy Fallon was hosting the show that night and made all kinds of fun about Michael.
Jack Black was on the next year with his bull.

@Victoria, thanks for posting the article. Unfortunately the link for the screenshot from 2002 doesn't work.

I don't remember if Jack Black was there the same night or the next year making fun of Michael, but I do remember somebody else coming out w/ the "award" after Mike had received it saying 'Oh, they were giving these away backstage...' I'm pretty sure it was Jimmy Fallon. They were definitely trying to humilate him.

I'm mystified by this incident, this is the first time I read about it. Tells you how much I've watched MTV in recent years, doesn't it? What a shameful stunt... MTV has really been crap anyway for ages. It didn't even enter my mind to switch on MTV after Michael passed... I remember when the Video Vanquard award bore Michael's name. They changed it? Somehow I managed to miss that too... Hmph...

Those anti-MTV t-shirts! :lmao:
