Michael Jackson giant soda can portrait sold to Ripley's
2nd August 2011
The huge Michael Jackson portrait that Sunland artist Seaton Brown created from 1,680 empty soda cans, calling it “A Tribute to the King of Pop,” has reached its logical destination.

Brown tells Culture Monster that he recently sold the 144-square-foot work (pictured above with the artist) to Ripley Entertainment, which operates a chain of 31 Ripley’s Believe It or Not! museums in 10 countries, including the one in Hollywood.

Brown says the work fetched a not-quite-kingly $7,500 -- enough, however, to cover the $1,000 he spent on raw materials (including about $600 worth of soda pop that he poured down the drain) and earn him a decent wage for the five solid weeks he spent creating it about a year and a half ago.

Edward Meyer, in charge of exhibits and archives for Ripley, which is based in Orlando, said Tuesday that plans call for installing "A Tribute to the King of Pop" in the Hollywood museum in November; after a five-year stay, it would move to another Ripley's Believe It or Not! venue. "A piece of this size becomes a significant gallery centerpiece for us, wherever it gets displayed," Meyer said by email.
The tribute in tin fits the museum chain's aim of collecting Michael Jackson artifacts that fall into the "odd, unusual, and unbelievable" niche Ripley commands, Meyer said. "We love things made from things the average person throws away."

Brown, meanwhile, continues to aim for that artistic sweet spot. He’s opening a show Saturday at the Sherman McNulty Gallery in West Hollywood, and the centerpiece is “Eye Candy,” a 6-by-6-foot portrait of Pamela Anderson made from more than 1,000 candy wrappers and some of the treats they contained (especially Tootsie Rolls), with a few crushed soda cans in the mix. It's pictured here in not-yet-finished form.

Brown, who came to L.A. from Minnesota about 10 years ago and earns his living primarily as a commercial artist, reports that although he's "not a candy eater," and threw out 90% of the sweets, "I had moments of weakness, I have to admit."

Also in the show is a self-portrait Brown made from 3,000 to 5,000 assorted puzzle pieces as an homage to Chuck Close, whose pointillistic self-portraits inspired “A Tribute to the King of Pop.” Brown also is showing traditional oil paintings –- still lifes and a plein-air canvas that the artist says he painted a few months ago on Santa Monica Beach while sleet was falling, capturing one of nature's Believe It or Not! moments.

Michael Jackson portrait puts the tin in Tinseltown: pop cans, Pop art 'King of Pop'
24th June 2010

By now, hundreds of thousands of viewers have seen Jeff Koons' "Michael Jackson and Bubbles," the gilded porcelain life-size sculpture of the King of Pop and his beloved chimpanzee that has been on display at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's Broad Contemporary Art Museum since it opened more than two years ago.

Now comes Michael Jackson without bubbles, thanks to Sunland artist Seaton Brown, who has created a 144-square-foot portrait of the King of Pop out of 1,680 empty soda pop cans -- the contents, bubbles included, having gone down the drain because, as the artist tells Culture Monster, "I don't really drink soda."

His piece, "A Tribute to the King of Pop," will be on display Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in downtown's Pershing Square, acknowledging the anniversary Friday of Jackson's death as part of the annual "Art Squared" exhibition co-sponsored by the city's Recreation and Parks department and the Downtown L.A. Art Project.

Brown, like Koons, picked the "Thriller"-era Jackson, before repeated cosmetic surgery completely reconfigured his face. Normally, the 40-year-old artist says, he's a traditionalist who doesn't dabble in Pop art or alternate media, earning his living from oil paintings and as a freelance illustrator and designer.

But an online image of a rendition of Leonardo's "The Last Supper" that Toronto artists made from more than 4,000 Rubik's Cubes got Brown thinking about doing something comparable; Chuck Close's pointillistic self-portraits entered his thinking, as did a trip down a supermarket aisle in which he was struck by the sheer abundance of color in soda cans.

Brown mulled doing an aluminum portrait of George Washington, but when Jackson died, he was on his way: Pop as a style, pop cans as a medium, the King of Pop as an honoree. He says about 20% of his raw materials were empties he bought from a recycling station; for the rest he paid retail, spending, he estimates, about $600 on soda cans both empty and full, and about $400 on other materials. The tricky part, he says, was finding good skin tones. The solution: the cream, root beer and cherry vanilla flavors of Whole Foods' house brand.

"A Tribute to the King of Pop" was finished in January -- "it was a full-time job for about five weeks," Brown says -- and was first seen in March at the Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk.

^that soda can picture is pretty impressive.

I hadn't seen these before...(maybe that's just me!). They were on the German ebay site: shop.ebay.de
Not entirely sure what they' re meant to be......... (bears?)
Edit: Thank you so much to Rhilo (below) for all the background info and links...so they started out as monkeys, or monkey- like creatures (kind of appropriate re. bubbles!). I see they were renamed in some countries ('The original name was changed to “Chicaboo” in the United Kingdom, to “Mon Cicci” in Italy and to “Kiki” in France')....I confess I've never heard of a Chicaboo either!

^Could be that they are custom made using existing figures; rehaired and given MJ outfits. Though I must say, those clothes are very well made and have a factory-stitched neatness to them.

I remember having a monkey (?) like that when I was little, and found some info on it. They are a Japanese toyline called Monchhichi that was first released in the 80's.

eta: ok, so these were not custom made, but actually released in limited supply by Monchhichi after Michael's passing. How come we missed that? http://www.designergrill.com/monchichi-means-happiness/ and http://www.flickr.com/photos/monchhichihouse/page5/ (scroll down).

I want them!

This isn't exactly a collectable, but a really weird listing. I think we can be sure those ain't Michael's. :puke: He wasn't even wearing a Gold underwear, it was a leotard. Someone care to inform the seller lol? They did a pretty good job of forging his signature though.

These are one of a kind original storyboards from the most expensive music video of all time GHOSTS -- by the greatest musician ever...Michael Jackson. There are deleted scenes, scenes drawn by artists, original scenes, etc...this is what appears to be a somewhat LATER draft of storyboards probably close to the time or production. This draft would have been photocopied then passed around to the keys of the film -- MJ, Winston, and perhaps the producers. They would make notes and share with each other to prep for production.

These storyboards are signed and inscribed by MICHAEL JACKSON and STAN WINSTON. Most of the notes are in MJs own hands...and he has initialed, signed, and made notes throughout the entire script. A letter of provenance also accompanies these storyboards and is dated 2006. Source of provenance is the same as the military jacket I have listed...so if you wish to learn more about who it comes from please see my other listings. Winner will receive the entire thick script of storyboards of the entire video. Ive attached pics above where most of the writing is...NOTE this is NOT all the writing -- Just most of it.

You are not gonna believe this one...

Part of our "Pop Saints" series, this prayer candle celebrates the uber-talented enigma known as The King of Pop. We've taken the form and style of religious devotional candles and put our glittery spin on them.

Our original "prayer to Saint Michael" is written with deep and honest affection. This one was probably the most difficult to write of the series, despite how much has been written about him since his death. He was such a strange/unique/unknowable/larger-than-life icon; this is our personal take on Michael's incredible contribution to pop culture.

White wax candle in glass open-necked holder is coated with our special translucent glitter technique, which adds dimension and subtle sparkle even when candle is not lit. Image overlay is fade, scratch and water resistant. Candle will burn for approximately 100 hours; of course you'd never leave a burning candle unattended.
8" tall, 2.5" diameter

Designed and handmade by Trixie & Beever of Barbie's Basement Jewellery in Toronto.

Ouch, that 'prayer' is heavily barbed 'You warned us you were bad'...etc ,' allow me to enjoy the paradox of being beloved and reviled'....I wonder who they think is going to buy this? Mystifying indeed. If a thunderbolt lands on their heads, we'll know who from!

WOW......mega/ultra/super epic poster......

I remember seeing one of those in London............and thinking it's 1988 again.......and I'm gonna see that show!!!!

The ebay auction ended at £410, which I think is a good deal considering it size and rarity.......

In the not-so-far-away future, these will be worth thousands!!!!

I thought I'd post this in case anyone is looking for a somewhat rare ( and expensive) Christmas present to themselves...a nice autograph from MJ with Jane Fonda from 1979....... plus a photo with both and the seller.

I'm not sure what you would wear with this bag...but I don't think it would matter much, as I expect the bag would be the centre of attention!
You could use it to carry around your Swarovski-beaded book.....

It's a beautiful bag. I don't think I would wear it. I would buy it to have it as a memorabilia. However, US$ 350,00 is way too expensive imo.

So cute!

From the German ebay site: a wooden circus wagon allegedly belonging to a carousel maker that Michael visited in 1992 (?).....there are lots of pictures on the link.

I'm afraid I can't translate from German to English, so have used the dreaded google translate...but it gives you a general idea.

http://www.ebay.de/itm/Antiker-Scha...pt=Zirkus_Variete_Theater&hash=item58912b7175

Came as the "King of Pop" to Sulzbach ...
Aichach-Sulzbach (kar / ech) - carousel maker Peter Petz mourns for Michael Jackson. Almost to the day 17 years ago was the "King of Pop" with him in Sulzbach was to visit, he reported. The singer (was looking for) a carousel for his Neverland ranch.
Until recently he had been in contact with the deceased, said Petz. The visit on 25 June 1992, he remembers exactly: Jackson settled on a tour of the show hand-built carousels. The wife of Peter Petz was as enthusiastic and excited about visiting celebrities.

One who remembers also to the unique event for Sulzbach, Tobias Marquard. He was twelve years old and had learned from his aunt, that is to come in the Michael Jackson Aichacher district. He testified before the House maintained by Petz on the star. Jackson had driven up with several companions in the limousine and have distributed autographs. Wondered or doubted that it was "real Jackson" the one he did not, he says. It is known in Sulzbach that Petz was known to the star. On rumors that there had been a double, does not believe Marquard. Petz has also vehemently denied this. The carousel builder is discreet when it comes to Jackson's visit.
............................................................
Worldwide unique antique Art Nouveau skylight personally wooden circus wagon, former lounge or "Backstage" by Michael Jackson!

It is an authentic and original skylight wooden circus wagon from the turn of the century, about 7m long, 2.5m wide, self-propelled, fully equipped with retractable patio

The circus truck was about 15 years ago in the operation of a German carousel maker, the Michael Jackson in the 90s visited personally by a nostalgic carousel as a custom-made for his Neverland Ranch to order and to discuss. Michael Jackson, "Kinjg of Pop", then spent more than half a day in the operation of the Karusellbauers from Augsburg (see Augsburg ug newspaper report of the newspaper and the Michael Jackson's handwritten entry in the guestbook owner of the family)

The multi-hour meeting took place in exactly the circus wagons of this offering in which Michael Jackson was photographed with the farmer's family carousel

The circus caravan is fully furnished with bed, sofa, stove, cabinets, lamps, cabinets, etc. and a variety of enclosures and mounting trays, etc. also an orig. Art Nouveau vanity in the bedroom, he is including all the images available on recognizable furnishings and of course a professional print of the photo of Michael Jackson as he is accurate and clearly visible in the car

The circus wagon is dense wood, roof, wheels turn. He does have some signs of age on (flaking paint and color), but the best of substance and tight, no water penetrates, no missing or rotted wood planks

Is at the entrance and the rear end, an additional side trimmed, patio foldable available and stored (see pictures), so the car can be - if he has time - longer protected from the wind for another 2 to 3 meters to the rear and side roof

The car seems to have a modern chassis with pneumatic. It is 15 years at a place near Augsburg and was neither used nor occupied

Excellent restoration base and unique souvenirs at the tragically deceased "King of Pop" Michael Jackson

Tours are available by appointment only! Pickup only near Augsburg.
