correct if I am wrong but I don't think a surgical mask can protect you from pollution and/or viruses , don't you need a n95 mask for such things?

As for wikipedia you wear a surgical mask if you don't want other people to get any sickness that you have , it is not the other way around.

I don´t know if Michaels mask gave that much protection for him but I´m sure thats the reason why he wore it.
He had to avoid infections because his lungs wasn´t good.
