Michael Jackson in Malaysia, 1996.
March 22, 2009 - According to reports from Malaysian media today, an official with AEG Live said China is Michael Jackson's most desired destination if his farewell tour extends to Asia.
The official told Guang Ming Daily that Michael Jackson missed Chinese destinations in his last two world tours in the 1990's. Millions of fans in China, which has population of 1.3 billion and hosts the magnificent Olympics in 2008, never got chance in the past to see Michael Jackson perform live on the Chinese mainland.
Now AEG also has got offers from promoters all over Asian regions, including Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, and Malaysia.
If "This Is It" tour does extend, Jackson may come to Asia in the second half of 2010 and hold two concerts in each country. Japan will probably be the first destination to kick off Jackson's Asian tour.
But Guang Ming Daily said many Malaysian promoters are still hesitate to welcome the King of Pop since each concert will require 5 million British pounds for his performance alone, as much as what he got from each London gig. There will be more costs for promoters to consider, including production and promotion fees.
Malaysian promoters are worried about the fact that even though they could sell out all the dates, they will still suffer loss in the end.
And Asian promoters will also have to consider the risks brought by their conservative governments, which may decide to cancel the shows at the last minute.
