Michael jackson - jackson to be honoured as official american legend

I live right in the middle of the Bible belt.
Let me tell ya'll somethin':

It ain't nothin to hear people called f*gs at Walmart
It ain't nothin to hear the preacher say homosexuals will burn in hell while askin you to pass the collection plate.
It ain't nothin to see the *rebel* flag on the hood of cars or in the windows of trucks.
It ain't nothin to beat the hell out of a black man and charge him for disrupting the peace.

I am a proud white woman. That don't make me any better than anyone else. I might not have been through hell as a race, but I know we need to stand up for that ones that have. We need to respect the one that broke their bodies and minds so we could all be free.

I don't really see how this will help or hurt his legacy one way or the other, approved or not.

I just liken it to winning or not winning a grammy or an academy award. In the long run, it means little.

Who cares if some people in Washington approve or disprove of this? The general public is what matters, and MJ is obviously a legend. Not just an American legend or icon, but a global one.

Thank You this really doesnt mean nothing to me.... Everybody know who he is, I'm not really upset about it.

Trust me, the debate that would have raged is not worth what would have come or, more likely, what would have not come. Michael will be recognized in due time, but not by the current generation in congress.

I still have another page of posts to read but on the pragmatic side you're right. Who cares who approves or disapproves from Washington?

But on the emotional side I'm ready to rip out throats. It's like a slap in the face to Sheila and especially Michael. I'm not exactly outraged but yet I am and I'm lily white, er or greenish actually (not that color matters). So I read this this morning:

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Rejects Michael Jackson Resolution

'I don't think it's necessary,' Pelosi says.

http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1615618/20090709/jackson_michael.jhtml

She's quoted as saying, "She added that a resolution would open up Jackson's life to "contrary views that are not necessary at this time to be expressed in association with a resolution whose purpose is quite different."

Um, what??

So I was following along until she got to the end about opening up Jacksons life (it wasn't open before? please...) and then after that she lost me. The media has never STOPPED with the negative towards Michael. So what doubletalk is that? ..."open up views that are contrary (ok...nothing new here) to-be-expressed-in-association-with-a-resolution-whose-purpose-is-quite-different." Again, WHAT?

So the first part is US. We love Michael and sing his praises and stick with him and know the truth. THEY are the contrary views. Did she actually think that WE thought that if a resolution was passed that the crap talk towards Michael would stop for a minute?

I'm just venting...I need food. I love you guys.

If I was a politician I guess I'd vote for it, because it wont hurt anything and he was a legend, but this shouldn't even be proposed, voted on, or debated on the house floor. This is not a government issue. It's taking things too far. It's too controversial. I don't want politicians whom I want to get reelected suffering politically over the controversy of this, when there are much more important things which are also controversial for them to worry about.

Politicians have to calculate which positions are worth the backlash and which aren't. considering gay marriage, a second stimulus, an economic disaster, and the situation in Iran, politicians can not afford to deal with this.

If it turns out to be easily passed with both parties onboard than it's nothing to worry about, but I have a feeling republicans will oppose it and then bash democrats for it come the 2010 election.

Remember despite the countrie's fascination with MJ, and their sympathies for him, most still believe he was a pedophile and underserving of such an honor.

I love MJ, but the government has more important things to worry about.

Not to mention this is only going to increase the negative comments being said about MJ. People are going to complain left and right about the government honoring a pedophile, and that could end up dominating the discussions about MJ across the air waves and in living rooms around the country.

Luckily Pelosi stopped the house from even debating it. If she hadn't Peter King and others like him would be in Washington at the podium bashing MJ right now.

remember how ugly the human race is? well it's been here 200,000 years. the odds that your race hasn't been through hell simmiliar to what blacks, or jews have gone through is slim to nothing, because groups and have been cruel to other groups since the beginning of man.

I just found out two years ago I had Irish ancestors who were enslaved a long time ago. It happens by every race and to every race.

The way I see it, Michael has been honored as an American legend for decades, the world over. He just doesn't have a plaque that specifically says it. It would've been symbolic anyway. The real honor he gets, that can't be opposed by any politician. That's out of their hands.

It means something to me as an African-American. I am tired of this. Finally we have a black person who surpassed his white predecessors in commercial and popular appeal, but still that is not good enough. I am so mad. I believe it is racially motivated, albeit perhaps subconsciously, I really do. They can say that pervert/pedophile crap all they want, but Congress has recognized Elvis several times now and he freaking dated and married a 14 year old! That is not an allegation. It's a fact. So why isn't he a pedophile? Why isn't Congress above him? And Sinatra had ties to be the mob, but that didn't prevent Congress from naming a post office after him. I am pissed. This is a slight to Michael Jackson and to minorities in general.

I know this resolution could pass if people could be mobilized to show their support. This is so frustrating. Michael has a huge fan base, but fat lot of good it's doing him now.

before you guys go all crazy over this I want you to read this from an article on this on MSNBC
Even before Pelosi’s comments, some Democrats said privately they did not support the resolution and a divisive debate would hurt House efforts to muster the votes for priorities such as health care and climate change.

very important are they not? what would MJ want them to focus on? what should be their priority? their responsiblity? It was irresponsible to propose this in the first place.

Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., who posted a video on YouTube calling Michael Jackson a “pervert” and a “pedophile,” has pledged to do all he could to block the resolution.

you can rest assured there would be more of that. MJ will be dragged through the mud, possibly worse than he ever was while alive.

here is the article

I get that, but this is still important to me, again not as a fan, but as a black person. I am sick of this treatment. I am offended. This may be just about Michael to you, but to me this is indicative of a larger problem which is important to me. If it was the Republican party doing this, it wouldn't hurt as much. But the Democratic party has a huge African-American base and they take it for bloody granted.

^^^^There's no difference between Rebublicans & Democrats, they're just names. That is why Ron Paul & Cynthia McKinney became really popular on the internet last election although they had very little mainstream media coverage. They represented a different view

RIGHT ON THE MONEY:yes:

I was on the news that us house of representatives isn't going to take H. RES. 600 into consideration accourding to Nacy pelsoi. I went to her website and typed in H. RES. 600 and it didn't show up. I strongley urge everybody to write there U.S. house of representatives and demand that it be put onto the floor and past. even to john king. if enough people tell john king they want vote for him unless hee past this bill he will vote yes for it.

Uh, no. Their political attitudes are not that far apart generally, but there are several practical differences between the parties. For one, African Americans overwhelmingly support Democrats over Republicans. The Democrats rely on the support of black people and Republicans don't. Thus, I would expect the Democrats to be a little more receptive.

Please don't patronize me. I majored in political science.

The more I think about it, the more I am surprised. The second Bashir or the like says a word about Michael there will be threads pages long of people wishing him death and other ill will. If a stupid story is posted in a trashy tabloid that no one takes seriously, many of us will get very upset and write e-mails and comments. If Michael is involved in a meaningless online poll, you organize yourselves to affect the outcome of the poll in favor of Michael. I don't understand why this is less important than an online poll or getting riled up over a stupid declaration by someone who is not really a fan of Michael. I could understand if you were completely apathetic and never did anything on Michael's behalf, but you aren't.

Has the Congress passed ever any act of 'recognition' of Elvis..? I didn't know that..

I support neither as they're all Freemasons, so they're exactly the same to me. I go for independents.

so as a black person you care more about a nonbinding resolution honoring MJ than you do about climate change, the economy, the war in Iraq and afhghanistan, and universal health care, while remembering that blacks suffer more from lack of health care than white people do?

that's kind of backwards. the truth is that as a black man you have no more authority to complain about this than I do as a white man. Your color gives you no special leg up on this. And this has nothing to do with race anyways. MJ isn't controversial because he's black. He is controversial because of allegations.

If his race was the problem he wouldn't be the most successful person on the planet. Remember our government awarded this man the Presidential award twice in one lifetime. He is the only person to ever acheive that. Considering that it's kind of hard to make a convincing argument that the government is choosing not to honor MJ because he's black. the government has already honored him more than any other entertainer in history.

two examples out of countless I could talk about.

Bush vetoed embryonic stem cell research.

Obama funded it.

Bush sent troops to Iraq.

Obama gave the order to bring them home.

holy crap! I honestly did not know that Elvis married a 14 year old untill today. I'm just surprised I never heard about that. It's so ironic because I've met die hard elvis fans who blasted Mj as a pedophile, when it wasn't even proven, while it's openly known and confirmed that Elvis was a pedophile.

Damn. That is the same age as Gavin Jackson was when he accused MJ.

what's also ironic is those same people claimed elvis was 10 times more talented than MJ which is laughable. Elvis had a little talent sure, but not legendary talent. He's not even in MJ's league vocally, let alone songwriting, or dancing ability.

Yeah, Elvis met Priscilla in Germany when he was in the Army. Her father was a general I think. Don Henley from The Eagles was arrested in the 1970s for sleeping with a groupie that was a minor, but he said he didn't know (or perhaps too stoned to notice). Then there was the Jerry Lee Lewis marrying his 13 year old cousin. I think Chuck Berry got in trouble for transporting a minor across state lines, but I'm not sure if he slept with her. Aaliyah married R. Kelly.

Did Elvis even write his own songs?
No, but Colonel Parker had it set up that any song Elvis recorded either had Elvis' name added to the credits or the song went into Elvis' publishing company. Sometimes Elvis was upset with this arrangement because he wanted to record songs he liked, but Parker wouldn't let him if the songwriter wouldn't give up the credits.

I don't know. but even if he did, to compare his talent to MJ's is ignorant. I know I am capable of setting aside my own biased and personal taste here while I say Michael Jackson is hands down no competition the best dancer of all time.
He is one of the best if not the best vocalist of all time.
He is hands down the best music video producer
He is not the best song writer of all time but he is still excellent at it
He is overall the most talented musician of all time and whoever is in second place is very, very, very far behind him.

Who cares. Politics is meaningless anyway. Michael made people's lives better through himself, he gave them something politics never could, joy, happiness, love. So screw it.

my little sister was diagnosed with diabetes at age 4. since then she has been taking insulin injections several times a day. she is 9 now. she cant' be left alone because at any moment she could crash. you even have to check her in the middle of the night. be the time she is my age her disease could kill her, leave her blind or missing a limb.

George Bush vetoed funding for embryonic stem cell research. He vetoed her cure, her right to live.

Obama funded her cure.

You claim politics is meaningless? It effects everybody in ways much larger than music ever could. Just look at the killed and wounder soldiers and civillains in Iraq. Look back at slavery. Look at the Japanese internment. Look at everything!!! You think Lincoln didn't give blacks something Micahel Jackson never could? You think Obama hasn't given my sister something Michael Jackson never could? He has given her the chance to survive!!!!!

Politics is extremely important. That is why I am majoring political science and journalism. It is my goal to make a difference in this world. I have chosen to devote the rest of my entire life to bringing about world peace and ending poverty and oppression all over the world.

You can't do that with music no matter what the lyrics say. They willl fall on deaf ears. Hell I love MJ's music, and I love the song Will You Be There which is about Jesus, even though I'm an agnostic. A great melody isn't going to suddenly change somebody's mind.

I don't know why Congress spends time on bills honoring people anyway. I'd prefer that they write laws. They need to focus on healthcare right now.

I also think Pelosi is right to prevent this resolution from being debated on the floor. I'm sure that Pete King isn't the only representative that would say awful things.
