Thriller and Sabu may be living a luxurious life in an animal sanctuary, but Michael Jackson’s giraffes aren’t doing so well.
Two of the animals that once made their home at the Neverland Ranch have died in the past few months, one in November and the other this month.
PETA is concerned the animals died from neglect and is asking the city to confiscate the remaining animals.
“We’re asking the city of Page to confiscate the two remaining giraffes and relocate them to a facility that can provide them with appropriate care before it’s too late,” the group said in a statement.
Foul play is not suspected at this time.
The owners of the land the giraffes were living on in Page, Arizona, Freddie and Tom Hancock said, “We’ve had them for 3½ years, and they are like our children. We’re just absolutely devastated by the death of these giraffes.”
The Hancocks were supposed to pay $100,000 to insure the giraffes, and claimed officials never gave them the papers to get the process going.
The money has not been received and the city is in the process of evicting the couple from the land.

An update about this:

As you can read PETA was claiming that the Preserve is responsible for their deaths (due to neglect) but the preserve is refuting that.

According to them the city did not want the animals. Not only they did not give them paper to ensure the animals, they also did not approve their request too build an enclosure (walls) around the animals. As a result, everyone could have access the animals.

Now the investigators are thinking that the giraffes were actually poisoned (not by the preserve but someone who did not want the animals there). According to TMZ live in addition to the Police , FBI has become a part of the investigation as well.
 
I have not researched this, but two days ago, one of my clients told me that the people were unable to pay the insurance on the animals so they were killing them off. Also, it appears that the animals were in good health when they died. Regardless of the truth of these allegations, it seems that based on the article that something shady is going on. It seems to me that the animals are being killed for money. Michael had these animals for years and nothing happened to them! Why should they be dead now!!

initially it was thought that (or peta suggested that) animals might have died due to neglect such as not feeding them and leaving them in cold etc. But apparently like you said the animals were healty so this is not the case.

As of now they believe that the animals are killed - poisoned. Now who poisoned them is the focus of the investigation.

I heard the above story as well - that the preserve owners were not able to pay for the insurance. As for the other side of the story they say that city never wanted those giraffes and preserve there. The owners have been in a legal battle with the city - requesting approval for an enclosure etc. The owners state that there were a lot of people that did not want the animals and could have been responsible for their deaths.

Like I said there are always two sides to the story and we'll have to wait until the end of the investigation to see who is responsible.
 
Poor animals. How can people be so cruel?

Also can someone tell me why giraffes need $100,000 insurance or insurance at all?
 
I had a horrible feeling that this would happen to those giraffes when, a while back, there was a lot of talk about the money to keep them alive. So sad... :(

simply put : if the owner's of the preserve were unable to look after them for any reason then they would become a burden on the city. so they wanted them to be insured for such cases. If needed the insurance will pay the money and the city would not have to.

In 2006, Freddie Hancock in the city Amazon of Page, who worked at Banjoko wildlife protection area got these giraffes and has taken care of them until now. However, the local parliament asked the conservation district to pay a 100,000 insurance for the giraffes in case of emergence, or they can’t keep them any more. The problem is that in order to get a $100,000 bond from an insurance company, the keeper claims she needs a special form issued by the Page city council itself. But the council refused her. Then, Freddy Hancock has been stuck in a dilemma and the giraffe are faced with unknown future. Freddie Hancock also said Page Government wanted to see the 10000 dollars insurance, but they didn't give her any reply about her required form.
 
This is awful. Heartbreaking. Of all animals giraffes I love the most... One of my pictures:

The people who had the giraffes asked for a permit to build a barrier wall for the giraffes so they were not out in the open. The citiy denied the permit so they were unable to build a barrier wall.
 
Its very sad to hear about these giraffes possibly being posioned. I don't understand how people can hurt an animal, I really can't.

I agree and it is even sadder right now because they belonged to MJ.

This is just very sad sad...first Michael now his Giraffes.....this has got to stop...:mad:......
 
This is very terrible. Didn't Michael KNOW the conditions under which they were being kept? It wasn't recently that they were removed from Neverland. Or did he have an employee whose duty it was to make sure his animals were well-kept? And that person didn't do his/her job? (I suspect that's the case. . . )

I do animal welfare volunteer work. In animal "sanctuaries," in general, if people can't provide for the animals' needs (including proper enclosures) then they shouldn't HAVE those animals until they can. It's not enough to hope to get the proper permits "later." Being "kind-hearted" is not enough. One has to know what a particular animal needs to thrive, and then provide it . . . or don't take in the animals. IMHO.

(Beachlover, and anyone. . . so sorry but I find humor in this tragic thread to be shocking. . . )
